Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has created a dramatic splash, earning high praise from both critics and players alike. With its unique story, incredible music, and tight combat, there's a lot to love. So what do we think? Join me (Dustin), Hoeg, Cog, and Chris to break it all down.

Daniel

Rick, I’m happy you’re here. Clair Obscure is my favorite game of the year but it definitely has problems and deserves plenty of criticism.

Caleb Jurgens

This will win GOTY at the game awards at end of year. Calling it.

Bogey

I beat the main story but I’m still working on the end game which I assume still has plenty of story. Anyone know if this spoiler cast spoils endgame shit? Cuz if so I’ll wait

Breno Bezerra Bluhm

Had the same reaction as Chris to the end of act 1. I was pissed when Verso appeared out of nowhere and even though I love Ben Star I was like “man fuck this shit”. He obviously grew on me though.

Daniel

There was a bit where he says the game isn’t interested in examining why the world is the way it is, but the big end of act 2 to act 3 reveal infers why the world is so surreal and painterly, what the Nevrons actually are that you’re fighting, the actual motives behind the antagonists and so on. It’s more subtext than spelling it out for you.

TheWubbz

Hoeg thinks Split Fiction is GOTY worthy. The writing in that is atrocious. Art design as bland and generic as they come. The gameplay outside of the final level, mediocre at best in my opinion. I’m sure he has some valid criticisms but I’m listening with that nugget in the back of my head

An optimistic Bears fan

You do realize its okay to disagree, right? Echo chambers are lame. The game is great it has flaws though obviously.

TheWubbz

Yea, the above is just my opinion. Hoeg’s opinion is just his opinion. Of course the game has flaws. Thanks

Pianopower

I still cant get over no one pressing Verso for answers lol. I really didnt click with the second half of the story, meh.

Pianopower

What a weird of spelling "he is right"

Adam Razak

I agree with Hoeg. Gustave being killed off so early didn't come as a big surprise to me simply because of how apprehensive Sandfall and Starr were about talking about Verso specifically before launch. I knew something was up.

Daniel

It’s more trusting the player. If every piece of media held your hand through every beat and immediately explained itself that would be kinda lame (see what’s happening with season 2 of TLOU). There’s a lot of foreshadowing and details in the world that wrap into all the reveals especially if you do it all. It’s all there if you’re paying attention. I do agree with his later points of the lessening emotional impact of “it was all a dream” type reveals since it also sat weird with me at first. But I conceded since the character work is so strong and the narrative is so bold and unique with what it pulls off.

Pianopower

Im on your side Rick! when Dustin explain his thought process of just "uh, this is freaky. And thats it" Im like...well no wonder this story is so amazing. Sure, if you apply surface level thinking then yeah, its amazing. But god forbid you want more out of your storytelling than just allegories and metaphors about grief. Which btw, meeeh. This game story fooled me into thinking it was gonna be about the expedition, but it wasnt. Still very fun tho, thank you combat

Pianopower

"well i guess nothing matters" YEPPPPP lol. It doesnt work very well when you realize what the twist is very early on.

Pianopower

Chris , no is not like halloween and saying "oh thats a ghost" lol, Is not my fault that I knew what the twist was from the get go, first 2 hrs and that killed it for me. Everything after Gustave its just the game doing the opposite of "show, dont tell". Im being told to care all of the sudden, about shit that didnt get me into the game in the first place.

Shawn

I don’t mind Hoegs criticisms of the game I enjoy the back and forth and his opinion matters just as much as everyone else. My biggest problem when hoeg has been on is that he is clearly extremely passionate about his take and tends to talk over others and control the majority of the review. I think that’s something you could work on more hoeg. I really enjoyed expedition 33 but it definitely has some pacing problems toward the end of the game. I can’t wait to see what this team does next.

TheWubbz

Hoeg’s audio coming in way too loud. This episode is painful with headphones

pbsandwich_

only halfway through but I really dig Hoeg's POV here, as great as the game was to the point where i platinumed it which I almost never do (and its also my GOTY so far), I tend to agree that the whole "this whole thing is a dream/fake" trope takes away some of the impact for me. its definitely more interesting with his slightly opposing pov than it would be if they all just screamed GOTY (which is also ok).

Pianopower

psss i feel like the others just couldnt refute what Hoeg was laying down so clearly , and it all boiled down to "well, you have a point...but i still enjoyed it, i dunno". Which is fair

TheWubbz

You didn’t like the game as much as others. We see your many comments. We get it. Talking louder than everyone else doesn’t make someone’s opinions more valid.

Shawn

Ironically ….You…. just like hoeg in the review think that if you spew your thoughts all over everyone else that it makes your viewpoint the right one lol. At least hoeg in the review says several times that his thoughts and opinions on the game don’t mean they are the true and correct views of the game and they are just how he felt personally and that it doesn’t take away from how the others felt. You on the other hand are so close minded in the comments that’s it’s actually funny that your championing hoeg. Chill out a little ya?

Shawn

Exactly!

Bogey

Hoeg I really appreciate you bringing a differing viewpoint, it’s good that the whole podcast wasn’t just all positive. But I really wish you’d work on not dominating the conversation so much and belaboring the point you’ve already made. I understand that it’s probably the lawyer in you and I mean this with no disrespect.

WhiskeyShoots

Man the part where hoeg and COG started screaming at each other and Cog was saying F you and Dustin started to cry while Chris keeps saying slurs was crazy.

TheWubbz

Hoeg: nothing happens in Act 1. In the same breath… we talk with Nevrons, the Manor, meeting Esquie, etc. If you think that the world of the canvas is not real you missed the point of the plot.. The argument that the denizens are just as real as the Dessendre family drama is a central conflict to the third act. Just because Dustin and the others don’t challenge his remarks doesn’t mean that Hoeg’s own argument isn’t full of holes. (Sorry for the triple negatives)

TheWubbz

Thanks for putting it more clearly than me.

Bert Chintus

Is it me or hoegs volume out of wack? I’m 40 min and he sounds like he’s shouting lmao

Shump and Dump

This is a great comparison. I also thought of the idea of our reality being a simulation. If that turned out to be true and the beings or aliens or whatever that controlled the simulation decided to shut it down, would that make the lives of our loved ones any less valuable to us? No… this is a step far beyond “just a dream” because the canvas EXISTS. Dreams don’t exist to anyone but the dreamer.

Dante B

I came here to write that I wish Hoeg would stop screaming at me.

Dion

I love hearing Hoeg talk about games. As intelligent as he is with law-related stuff, his gaming critiques are equally as thoughtful.

Shadi Haddad

I hadn't considered the things Rick brought up about the game essentially just being levels that don't interconnect in the world and why things are the way they are. I love FFVII, and FF in general and I think a part of that not only is the characters but that there's a carefully crafted world with places that each their own histories and have a reason why they are the way they are. Same could probably be said for LotR and Star Wars. And that was certainly a missing element from this game.

Bert Chintus

Hoeg is wrong and dumb!! Jk - I felt his reasoning of why things didn’t land for him was explained pretty well. While I disagree with his “nothing happened in act one” take, I get where he’s coming from with the reveal in act two that everything is painted. I initially was bummed by that explanation because I also hate the trope of everything being a dream. Once the story kept rolling and we learned about the family outside the canvas, I was re-engaged and went back to loving this game. I think it’s crazy Sandfall managed to take a shitty trope and knock it out of the park either way. GOTY for me for sure.

Daniel

Hoeg was great!

Gabe Horn

Hoeg is entitled to his opinion but I wish he would stop talking over everyone and dominating the discussion. I'm happy to hear a more critical view on the game but it's sort of annoying how much he is hogging the mic. It's like any time anyone else wants to say something positive about the game he has to stop them and explain why what they liked is actually bad. Like, ok man, we get it. I know you're a lawyer, but do you really need to argue every single point the other guests make?

TheWubbz

Now that I’ve listened to the rest of this…it all sounds like Hoeg thinking he figured out the story ahead of the general audience (200 IQ moment) and then refusing to engage with the narrative even though he fails to understand what is going on himself. The world’s not FAKE but the conclusions he jumps to about the Canvas are. There are explanations for why the world of the game is the way it is… he’s just not interested in them

OTTAPPS

Refreshing to hear Hoeg's alternative perspective. Good spectrum of opinions gathered for this one. Those who wanted their opinions reinforced will no doubt cry the loudest in the comments 😂 Nice job all.

Neil Davis

I’m kinda bummed about this. Was really looking forward to hearing you guys discuss this but Hoeg really kinda ruined the whole show. Kinda sucked to just have him talk over people. I enjoy his legal analysis but after this I’ll skip any spoilercast he’s on.

zepplinmike

Just want to say I think the gods and mortals comparison is very apt and puts it perfectly. It also seems like the probable intention since prior to the reveals, the Paintress and other beings seem like and are referred to as gods by the party. It turns out they are! It’s just that we get to also see the perspective of the family that seems by comparison more normal and familiar to us, while actually existing in a fantastical world very different from ours. Perhaps the family actually are like mythological-type gods in an Olympus or Asgard-like world from our own perspective.

Shinra Mods

Jesus. Hoeg was fucking insufferable. What a downer, acting so above it all. Come off your high horse. Cog, on the other hand, explained it perfectly and eloquently. Spot on, dude.

Lunar Tear

Loved this spoilercast!

Misanthropic_Altruist

Big South of Midnight spoiler in here for anyone who cares. Can I just say that Hoeg’s massive intelligence should not be understated. The man is a genius!

Misanthropic_Altruist

The “…you’re in a painting in Paris…!” comment made me realize just how much this dude is on another level than everyone else. Everyone should aspire to be that smart.

Misanthropic_Altruist

I don’t understand the argument that the inhabitants of Lumiere are not real, therefore their existence is insignificant and wiping them out is not genocide. They’re “real”enough: they feel fear, they love, and have all the emotions we do. What is “real”? Apparently the popular belief of our existence is that it was created by a God. Whether it was produced by painting or another otherworldly power many faiths still believe in, we are still simply the creation of a higher being. Does that make us not “real” or unworthy of existing?

Johnny Lamotte

Hoeg needs to relax a little lol did this game hurt his kids 😂😭 I do agree with him about the last decision being easy though. I’m surprised cog chose the selfish path lol but respect. 🫡

Joe B

Hoeg is of course entitled to a different opinion and to not like something because he dislikes a story choice, but he is basically stating he didnt enjoy the game because the story wasnt telegraphed to him the way he thought it up in his head. The main villian is literally called the paintress who is making the worlds inhabitants dissapear. Could we really not telegraph the concept they may be in a painting (not the real world)?

zepplinmike

To me they could both be characterized as selfish choices since either way there were sacrifices of others made for the benefit of one’s self or family. I hesitantly sided with Maelle because while I thought both made good points, I continued to view those in the painting as people worthy of saving and made the choice based on that. If Renoir weren’t going to erase the painting if Maelle leaves, it would be an easy choice. The ending after that choice definitely leaned into the dark results of Maelle’s addiction, her control of the world, and of “fake” Verso. But when I sided with her, I justified it by thinking there was at least a chance she’d make better choices as she had promised Renoir.

zepplinmike

Agreed. I’ll add that the Maelle ending was clearly meant to be disturbing because of her controlling “fake” Verso and the others. But if those aren’t real people anyway, then her controlling them would also be meaningless, so I don’t think that was the intent at all. I don’t even think Renoir treated them as inconsequential judging by how he spoke to and about them. He just viewed them as not of equal importance to his family . I find it to be a really interesting moral exercise that we could face in our own lifetimes with self aware AI. Whatever the case, it’s definitely a lot more complicated than “it was all a dream, oh well, nothing matters!”

Johnny Lamotte

That’s fair. She gave me pretty bad vibes the whole last half of the game though so I knew something was up. Great game though. I loved it. Game of the year so far for me.

TheWubbz

I’m not upset that Hoeg had issues with the game or that he may have misunderstood parts of the story. What disappointed me was how the Spoilercast shifted away from the thoughtful, in-depth discussion I usually enjoy and was looking forward to. Instead, it often felt like the others had to justify what they liked, with Hoeg frequently interrupting to challenge their perspectives. As a result, a lot of the narratives more interesting elements—like the layers behind Verso’s deception—went largely unexplored. I was really looking forward to this episode, but it ended up feeling more surface-level than usual

Colin Moriarty

Really good to hear the polar opposite view from Hoeg. Gimme some of that SPICE alongside the glaze🔥

Charlie

I agree that Hoeg was difficult to listen to. He cut in way too often and made the episode unenjoyable for me.

Darkmatter

Should have talked about more end game stuff, specially *that* super boss

Ventriloquist

Hoping in part two there's some talk about the postgame and specifically the secret bosses. I think that's where the game peaks in terms of gameplay, music and atmosphere.

Guy Incognito

I don’t buy the “everyone’s created by the painters so therefore they are fake” take. They are ostensibly gods. If god made people, does that make them any less “real?” I’m not religious at all, but it just seems like a cop out to call them fake just because they have a clear creator. Everyone can have their own opinion of course and I’m not trying to pile on Hoeg; I’ve seen this take elsewhere too. The “fake” take is just lazy in my opinion.

Susan B. Anthony Bourdain

The view that nothing matters because the world is “fake” is a pretty surface-level take. The main point of the Expeditions is as a narrative device to communicate to players the generational passage of time within the canvas. People are born, grow up, fall in love, get married, have children, get hurt, learn things, like things, hate things, lose people. They have real existences. The characters don’t need extended conversations about existentialism, it plays out from the very beginning of the game to the very end.

Envydiel

How did I guess all the comments would be about Hoeg 😅

Cai

I don’t think any of these hosts did much post game content. Gene is the only one who i’ve seen mention any of it.

Cai

(Severance spoilers) The whole “the inhabitants of Lumiere are fake” argument feels like the “innies aren’t real people” conversation. Like yeah, maybe in some logical way they aren’t - but the entire narrative is trying to get you to care just as deeply about them as you would the “real” characters. You can absolutely argue that the story did a poor job of making you connect with the painted creations, but the game is doing everything to tell you they’re just as “real”.

Joosh

"you walk around on Halloween and go '...that's a costume'" was a legendary quote

Jacob Lesperance

I enjoy Hoeg. But he has some of the worst takes with video games I've ever heard, lol.

Matt Llewellyn

So it never crossed Hoeg’s mind that if a Paintress can erase you that you were probably painted to begin with? There’s also so many people who have hit the nail on the head with it being creator vs creations and that the created are just as real. He also seemed to forget that the painters can die in the painting so how could it be fake rather than a different plane of existence. I just wholly disagree with his take and shocked that he seemed to be so vitriolic about it. He constantly interrupted and was condescending when others talked about things they liked. He just didn’t get it.

Jannik Rafael Andersen

I like Howg and always appreciate his views. But man, tone it down a bit and stop yelling 🤏

Matt Llewellyn

It’s not that he had his own perspective. It’s that he would interject and pretty much shut out everyone else and their perspective because “to him” it wasn’t that way. He pulled the “nuh uh” argument. In a game about imagination and inference, the self described analytical black and white thinker dominated the conversation to its detriment.

Jacob Lesperance

Hoeg saying the world isn't real and just a dream, so nothing matters is wild. Its absolutely real to the people who were created and now realize they have to fight for their existence. Essentially a battle between God and his creations. The none of this matters argument is garbage, lol. I get its his opinion, but it doesn't make sense in the context of the game.

Walk Forward Cutscene

Just wanted to say I agree with Dustin not going beat by beat. I’m here for a discussion, not a synopsis

Susan B. Anthony Bourdain

Not trying to put words into Hoeg’s mouth, but my interpretation of his take is that they didn’t explore the gods/creations angle thoroughly enough if that’s what they wanted emphasized. They focused more on the family drama, which was straightforward. That’s fair (if I’m accurate!), though I personally didn’t need any more than they gave me. Lune grappling with her thoughts about gods and the nature of reality in a side quest wouldn’t have moved me any more than her sitting down and choosing not to participate in their game once the world was ending. That said enough.

Jacob Starr

I agree, also it was insufferable how many times he had to state that the game turned out to be something that's not for him. Yes we get it, it didn't answer the questions you wanted, that doesn't mean you have to interject yourself everyone someone else is talking.

Jacob Starr

I appreciate a critical view point, it helps me reflect on my own thoughts of the game. But Hoeg, buddy, you gotta stop interjecting yourself every time it's someone else's turn. Barely heard anything from Cog in comparison.

Jacob Starr

I cannot second this comment enough.

Publix Chicken tender sub

Random thought 💭 The music from the inside the monolith level, it sounded like the intro to twin peaks for a few seconds 😂🤷🏻‍♂️

OTTAPPS

There was interjection but everyone still got their shit in just fine. Infact them having to counter him often led to stronger points being made. Count up how many minutes everyone spoke for and they'll all be within 5% of one another.

The Incredible Shulk

I mean, that is partially your fault for listening to all that. I didnt even know Ben Starr was in the game until he appeared on Summon Sign

Adam Razak

Except I didn't watch and listen to anything about the game beyond the cast reveal trailer. So, definitely no "fault" to be had on my end.

The Incredible Shulk

40 min in....This one might be a skip. I like Hoeg...but he is steam rolling everyone and almost yelling all his points

Eric Crunkilton

I’m more than happy to listen to people I disagree with but Hoeg just doesn’t come off well in this format. I just heard him refer to Andy Serkis as “Gollum.” The guy has been around a long time. His work in this game is excellent. It was likely an attempt at humor but just comes off as forced. You are all natural podcasters, he is not. Hoeg is great on legal topics and I’m glad he’s a part of the network, but this has been hard to listen to so far.

Wayde

I will wait for the next spoilercast got an hr in and couldn't take hoeg anymore. You can disagree and have different opinions but holy shit it was a take over

Publix Chicken tender sub

Why is Hoeg yelling like Dwight Schrute on the sales man of the year episode 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

Gianni Pisa

Timestamp : 0 - 2:53:15 - Hoeg objects

Soldierboy

Hoeg was scratchin at his neck like a crack addict the way he was desperate to jump in and argue against Cog's thougths on the ending choice. Cog was having a good time vibing about the choices and Hoeg just came in and poured water on him, which he did the whole episode. I like Hoeg for the most part, but i checked out after that. Also felt like he was yelling at times. 😅

Soldierboy

You're so amazing and smart, man. Here, have a gold star 🌟

Brrrn39

I feel like hoeg fundamentally misunderstood this game. Yes the world isn’t “real” but just like our world isn’t “real” if you believe we had a creator. The nevrons aren’t just a wizards creation they actually have a purpose

Pianopower

Thanks! Can I sell the gold star for some cash? Kinda want a pizza or something instead

Pianopower

And Hoeg is still right. Love it that no one is refuting him lol

Pianopower

Its all fake, and i assume it only works if you dont see the twist coming from a mile away

Soldierboy

"Right"....... Riiiiiiiiight. Sure thing, man. I don't give a shit if he was right or not. I dont actually even care what he dislikes about it. Poeple can have their opinions. Hell, I actually agree that Verso is the obvious choice even. Its that he dominates the convo(yelling practically) about it in a way that -for me- made it an unenjoyable listen. Im sorry that in your infinite wisdom and superior intellect that you and hoeg knew all the twists and the game wasn't catered exactly to you and what you thought it would be and didn't enjoy it, man. Bummer. But in the same vein, I just didn't enjoy this spoilercast either. Bummer.

Deli Dept.

I like Hoeg but in this one idk, I couldn’t stop cringing at this man always interrupting everyone

Corkumk

This was a great discussion. Hoeg is looking at it from a very literal perspective. Sure logically you should face your grief and whatnot but it’s not always that simple. I think a major theme of the game is also, what makes someone “real”. I think it’s something a lot of artists can relate to about the things they create.

Mario Villelli

Hoeg was great with his outside view. Really don’t get the complaints

NeO JD

SF is currently my GOTY and CO is 2nd but to each their own. 🤷🏻‍♂️

demosthenes140

Was really looking forward to this spoiler cast, but I really can’t stand to listen to Hoeg anymore

Armando

Hoeg i love you dude, but you have a to listen more. Please dont interrupt so many many times. I felt for the Lord Cog

D

I wish Hoeg would allow the other three hosts to talk now and then. Don't mind his opinions, just please allow others to talk!

D

Exactly how I feel. Would like to hear from the other hosts as well.

Jmadrigal12

Why did the other LSM staff keep interrupting Hoeg’s Solo Spoilercast?!?!?!! Jokes aside. Yes he was interjecting too much and dominated the episode which I’m sure he’ll improve on. But Hoeg just seemed a bit too over critical and analytical with this one. I think Raygun couldn’t have said it better “It kinda sounds like [you’re] going to Halloween and being like, that’s a costume!” I don’t think one can ever fully enjoy a video game if it was being dissected and put under a microscope like Hoeg did and not take it for what it is, a good video game that does a lot of things right. Hoeg’s analysis on this game is also much more confusing when he praised that hell out of split fiction which IMO had more jarring flaws yet he didn’t seem to mention them or mind them as much.

Uvula Smack

This is a good opportunity for Hoeg to grow as a podcaster and opinion guest. Got to let others finish their points and even sentences.

Tanwir Karim

Hoeg is so negative and nitpicky, it's hard to listen to. Otherwise it's a great episode, just hard to enjoy it with the seemingly forced negativity, and him constantly cutting everyone off.

Tanwir Karim

Exactly, he ruined it for me.

Anthony Palerino

I love Hoeg and I’m sure all this negativity is hard to read, but I generally agree with a lot of the good faith criticisms here. It’s not that we hate your opinion (although for some that is their problem), but it’s about the consistent loud interjections that kinda derailed the convo. Chris’s comment that “you walk around on Halloween and go ‘that’s a costume’” was perfect.

Griffin Karr

I feel like at some point Dustin should’ve stepped in and told Hoeg to stop interrupting everyone. I was excited to hear cog and Chris because they aren’t on many LSM shows that aren’t their regular show and they couldn’t make a point without Hoeg cutting them off

Travis Berry

Oh. My. Goodness. Hoeg, I love you but I had to stop listening halfway through. Completely taking over the conversation and trying to downgrade other's opinions.

Rosko123

The thing is it does answer the VAST majority of the things he said it doesn't. An extremely frustrating watch.

GIVE ME BACK MY FORESKIN

I was actually really hyped to learn Hoeg wasn’t as hot on this game as most of us were, LSM content is good because of the variety of viewpoints. But uhhh yeah hard listen and it sucks I was looking forward to what the other 3 had to say

Ahlickaloo

Verso did nothing wrong

Titan

Please do a 2nd spoilercast of this game with Brad, Cog, Chris, Matty, and Colin. This did not justify this game at all.

Emigdio Alvarez

Guys, I'm really hyped to watch this episode as this has become one of my favorite games and i'm really interested in hearing specially everyone's opinions on the game... but reading the comments I'm not sure if I'll like it, so is it worth it? (not a kick to Hoeg, I usually love his takes but as i understand he's rough in this one)

DRUGGNUTZ

I completely agree. He went into it saying (and I’m paraphrasing, “I was probably more excited for this game more than anyone, jrpgs are my favorite, and the narrative didn’t go where I wanted it to go so this is where it has flaws” in trying to challenge, and interrupt the cast. In Hoeg’s defense, he did say he speaks in absolutes, but that didn’t lend to a good podcast format, because of the interaction with the other guests. I was most curious to hear what Chris had to say, since I’ve been listening to sacred since it started, I’m familiar with his tastes in games. It makes perfect sense why the prologue wasn’t his favorite part of the game. The constant yelling over everyone, didn’t lend the best to this episode.

Gareth Rigden

The golden rule of life Mr Hoeg, 'never yuck someone's yum'. Super unenjoyable listen to Cog and Chris start to get excited about something, only to be shot down by Hoeg. Alot of learning's here for both Hoeg and LSM.

The Lizard King

He doesn’t let anyone speak and whilst you can’t counter points as they’re all opinions, not every single positive has to come with a negative.

The Lizard King

How can someone be right or wrong in that instance? 😂

The Lizard King

Does Hoeg understand that a child painted this world? I feel like he must not know that listening to him here. How did nobody mention this to him?

The Lizard King

Funny because Hoeg literally cries so loud for 2 hours here 😂

Tanwir Karim

Can someone make an edit of this episode and remove Hoeg, he gets worse as it goes on.

Robert S Janesheski

I just want Hoeg to stop yelling when he talks. He brings great points of conversations. Just too aggressive. He's great, just slow it down please.

I'm not that Guy

I think Hoeg is great, but in this it feels like he is trapped in a corner and is getting too defensive. He is cutting in too much, he is simplifying things too much and he is speaking too loud. I'm having trouble finishing this podcast because he is ho humming a lot of what Coeg and Chris are saying. We got it, it wasn't the story you had written in your head. That is okay, and it is good to hear an opposite opinion but it's coming off like he is trying to invalidate Chris and Coegs opinion. Especially when they are talking about the choice at the end. Hoeg you are just coming in a little too hot.

Landon Phipps

This is the first time I’ve turned off a spoilercast halfway through and couldn’t finish it. That’s all thanks to Hoeg, who constantly hogs the conversation and cuts off anybody who is trying to talk about why they liked the game. I guess I’ll wait for the 2nd spoilercast so I can actually hear everyone’s opinions on the game and not 2 hours of the Hoeg Show

Hunter Flaherty

Ill be honest…. Literally the first time i have thought that chris has a single functioning cell inside his body

Joshua Brown

Should have put Gene in to counter Hoeg, too much spice haha

WhereIsTheVirus

Hoeg…let’s take it down a few notches big guy😬

Gino Fedele

Too true. I actually wonder if his interjecting wouldn’t be as poorly received if his volume was more normalized with the rest of the crew. He really does come off as shouting even though I have heard him enough on other shows to know he’s not.

D

Just signed up for the Patreon to hear this, but it was a hard listen. The constant interrupting 😑

Beau!

Hoeg live reporting from a hurricane.

Bird vs Camel

Absolutely insane that my 1st ever sacred plus episode and 1st ever time hearing lord cognitive voice there is an immediate police siren in the background of his mic.

DonglerofThaShnutz

Man i was looking so forward to the spoilercast but Hoeg really just interrupted everyone wayyyy too much. When even Cog has to say “hold up- let me finish” you know it’s too much. Also- Hoeg is literally just yelling into his mic. It was a very hard listen unfortunately. Looking forward to a second spoilercast where everyone actually gets time to talk.

Bird vs Camel

This is my 1st time ever hearing Hoeg's voice so take this with a grain of salt. Not only is Hoeg making little to no sense with his explanations of why he feels the way he does about the game, he is just plain annoying. He comes out of the gate playing defense and his tone is a crazy mix of being 1 note and near yelling. 1 note In the sense that every syllable he says is a C#. Literally 1 note. It is a terrible listening experience. Like he's an on-the-spot weatherman in a hurricane. Everyone else was great. This was also my 1st time hearing Cog and his insight and tone are great!

Tomde (Tom DeSantis)

Hoeg can't let people have their own experience with the game and enjoy it lol. Corny. Annoyed me enough to come here and leave my first comment -.-

Stonehorn

That’s one of the dumbest things I’ve read in a while. Congratulations.

Stonehorn

No, a child did not.

Stonehorn

I’m sorry, but that analogy makes no sense. If a creator can create real, physical things, then it’s real.

Nick Shirt

Echoing the other comments, really like Hoeg but a tough listen

Aaron

Hoeg treated this like a court case.

The Lizard King

It’s a world created by an artist, in this case Verso. It’s doesn’t need to be explained more than that why ‘Flying Waters’ exists.

PissedtfOFF

In the theme of the game yes a child did. Verso literally imagined characters like Esquie and Monoco from stuffed animals and a dog

PissedtfOFF

This was tough. First time sub just for this, and even though i appreciate Hoeg and resonate with him, he struggles to debate this or discuss this in a good faith manner. He constantly adds a disclaimer about accepting other people's subjective opinion on the matter, and then immediately follows up by not plainly accepting said subjective opinions. There's a difference between discussing your disliked aspects of the game, and rejecting other people's enjoyment of those aspects which is how this came across

Deadboy.

Seems like Hoag is just too analytical for something that is supposed to be enjoyed in the abstract. Like someone who lacks imagination and expects the game to do the heavy lifting.

Nuke

You won’t hear everyone’s opinions because it’ll be Gene interrupting everyone.

Dead

Put Gene, Rick, and Jaffee on a podcast together. No one would get a thought out lmao.

Stephen

Can Hoag please let the others finish? We aren’t on his Patreon.

Your Boi Nicky V

Just listening to this now, I like Hoeg and aappreciate he had a different viewpoint but the constant interrupting makes it a difficult listen.

Blue

Hoeg definitely did not dig deep enough into the lore because his analysis was completely wrong. The world is depicted the way it is is because it was painted by a child Verso. It was representative of a child's wonder. Idk. They explain a lot if you look for it.

Blue

Hoeg definitely ruined this spoilercast for. Hopefully the second Spoilercast is better

Blue

I just signed up today and Hoeg ruined this podcast for me. Cog and Chris were the standouts. Loved their analysis.

MnTwinsfan92

I hadn't seen all the comments on this one, but agree with majority here as I just finished the game and was excited for the spoilercast. Well I'm excited for the next one. I think I'd be okay with not being high on the game, just let the other people say why things worked for them before saying why it didn't. It was disruptive. Maybe I'm used to LSM doing "around the horn" style vs conversation, but everyone else didn't interrupt when it came to Hoeg's turn. I'd guess he talked about 50% more than any of the other members of the show.

Ed

Just finished the game and came to listen to this episode. Hoag was exhausting to listen to.

Ed

Yes a child did lol The world was created by Verso and his sister Clea

Dr. D

Whew hard to listen to Hoeg scream talk over people I actually want to listen to for three hours. Was excited to hear the panel and about everyone’s very real experience with grief but Hoeg killed all the meaningful conversations in the crib “ITS ALL FAKE”.

Cory Towler

Super late on this shit. But good god Hoeg was annoying as SHIT. I personally dont like listening to him anymore. I totally respect his view points but god almighty he was loud, obnoxious, and just kept repeating the same as shit over and over. I get it bro you dont like that it was fake, shut the hell up, i dont need to hear the same thing 37 times. God that spoilercast was annoying as shit and totally ruined the entire vibe of the discussion. unfortunately wont be finishing this one.

Michael Ryan

Hoegs points about having a feeling Gustaves death was coming from the trailers is the reason I don't watch them. Especially Story trailers. Great spoilercast lads, only getting around to it now.

Owen S

I pretty much only agree with Hoeg on the half baked nature of Act 3. All in all this is a game that cares more about emotion than lore. That is my preferred type of story but clearly hoeg would’ve preferred it to be more lore heavy and less emotion based

Jeshua Anderson

Stupidest take I've seen in a long time.

Minji of NewJeans

Finally finished this game so I could get around to listening to the two spoilercasts. Colin’s episode was a good listen, but this one jfc.. Anybody remotely expresses positivity toward the game, Hoeg: LOUD NOISES!

Jason Rose

Growing up is realizing Hoeg is exactly correct in his analysis even if you don’t like the messenger. Hoeg has this tendency to overexplain and not realize he’s recording with partners, which is surprising as that’s a mistake noobs to the podcasting space make when they begin. You need to have a strong host paired with him. Doesn’t make him wrong though. Expedition 33 entirely falls apart in the third act, it isn’t interested in explaining anything about its world and what’s in it either and the ultimate reveal is one of the worst tropes in existence. I’m not sure why Chris was even on a spoiler cast for this when he hadn’t finished the game. You can’t tell about the narrative if you haven’t gotten to the end and you certainly can’t comment on someone else’s critique of the big reveal if you haven’t even gotten there. His comment about Halloween costumes was absurd with this context. Who plays an RPG and just handwave any context for the world and its areas with “I don’t need any of that?”

Jason Rose

That’s just an excuse to not explain anything quite frankly.

Jason Rose

It does need to be explained otherwise it’s exactly like Hoeg said “it’s just cool shit for no reason other than look this is cool” there’s no explanation for anything, they don’t explain much of the terminology at play, what the fracture even is and it falls apart in the third act to the tropey “it’s a dream” scenario that’s beyond tired.

The Lizard King

The fact that it’s a child’s painting isn’t enough explanation for you?

Jason Rose

I don’t get how that’s an excuse for not explaining how anything is the way it is, or that the big reveal is still a lazy trope that has been done to death.

Jason Rose

No, that’s a cop out

Jason Rose

This is a hosting issue mostly, that’s their job but part of being an experienced podcasts and growing as one is listening more than you talk on shows with multiple people. It’s Hoeg’s weakness, even if he was right about all of his critiques.

Sean Hogan

This is so hard to listen to, I'm 20 mins in and Hoeg just keeps butting in at every moment

Sean Hogan

I'm sure no one's looking at the comments so far in the past but this episode was a really tough listen and I've given up. A good learning curve for Dustin to maybe rein unruly guests in more. The conversation was excellent if you ignore a certain member of the team shouting over and acting like he's the main character of the episode throughout.

Caleb Peacock

Bro you’re a traitor to Canada and a total clown. Anytime you write, you take a deep breath of your own farts. You also sound like a little baby who needs everything overly contextualized lol. Just everything I read from you is just shit covered in clown covered makeup

Jason Rose

In this episode, Caleb the pussy rages about video game takes because other people’s offend him. Muh traitor to Canada, grow up. If you’re Canadian and ecstatic about the state of the country you’re fucking retarded.

Michael Tucker

This is the first time I’ve had to fast-forward through one person talking, every time they talked.
