Minimum Waste and Maximum Joy | Sacred Symbols, Episode 401

Reporting from this past week indicates Sony is abandoning its push to publish more games on PC, a reversal from a six-ish year old initiative that frankly bore little fruit outside of Helldivers 2. And let's be real: Though we were vocal advocates of this approach on the show, a vast majority of the PlayStation fanbase was decidedly not on board. Sony has apparently determined that it's a waste of time to further pursue this path, and that doing so could ultimately eat into their console ecosystem in unacceptable ways. Thus, it's time for many of you to celebrate, as we consider the reasons behind this dramatic course-correction. Plus: Rumors are circulating that Cory Barlog's next game is a God of War spin-off, Bluepoint was apparently eager to work on a Bloodborne remake before behing unceremoniously shut down, Starfield is finally coming to PlayStation 5 this April, Marathon has been mysteriously rated by the ESRB for launch on PlayStation 4, embattled free-to-play shooter Highguard is officially shutting down, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is Sony investing enough into games for kids? In such a hostile environment, could troubled products like No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 have launched and turned things around today? Why are some games' Trophies published, even if they go unreleased? Will Dustin continue to compile a collection of pictures of complete strangers on his refrigerator? A new episode of Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast launches each Friday morning. "Chris, you are hunting TJSmash" "Which way should we go?" "In the direction of AI slop intros"

Linton Singarayer

This might edge out the Death Stranding thumbnail to take the status of GOAT

I want a shirt but the shipping to Canada makes it $71 for one t-shirt. Lol.

Henry3K

what is this abomination lol

I love that Chris still has his glasses on in the thumbnail

Colin lovingly looking at Chris while taking a shit, unholy. Gotta love it 😂😂😂

RE: the shirt sizing, as a long torso'd individual, if/when long sized aren't available (and given your guys' merch set-up I would never expect a niche thing like that at All lol) I usually just buy a size or two bigger than I'd normally get. It isn't always great but that usually works.

The God of War promotional image is terrible. Besides obvious issues like the bald cap and Kratos being in an awkward pose, it's really that everything about the image looks fake. It may not literally be an AI image, but everything about it looks so faked that it could be. It just looks like two actors in costume next to a fake rock on a set. I would want to see a version of this image that was as real as possible. Have Hurst actually shave his head, have them actually go out in a real woods, next to a real rock and use natural lighting. There's also too much depth of field on the image. My eyes need to be able to look over the whole image and feel it, not just be told to focus the characters and the side tree and ignore everything else.

Lmao. Dustins on his A game again with those thumbnails.

Alex Weiss

Colin’s pillows look like he stole them right off Chris’s couch! Another great podcast fellas!

Frankie

It’s just ghost of sparta now.

Colin x Jaffe episodes shouldn't be a weekly thing. God. People will beat any fun thing to the ground. Have you not learned anything from Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, etc.? More often is not better.

On the BluePoint point (hah) Colin is making: how do you know for what PlayStation bought the studio with such confidence? Nothing in the write-up when the deal was announced speaks about this. Both Herman and the studio head discuss NEW things for the studio to do. Why should PlayStation have a US studio that can do the same work that a team in Poland, Malaysia, or wherever Virtuous has a studio can also do FOR A QUARTER of what it would cost for BluePoint. An internal remake studio for stuff that others (Konami, Bethesda, Nintendo, etc.) are outsourcing left and right? Also, if you are laughing about team members not wanting to do service games, and that is so obvious, so why is it not the same when PlayStation would force them into remakes when they would like to go beyond that... you know... actually having an ip IN THE STUDIO and not just stuff others own?

Germanos

What if the showrunners used AI to create the image? Anyone though about that? This is clearly, abviously AI generated.

Germanos

Very nice write-in at the end of the Highguard conversation. I can clearly picture this snarky manchild desperate for scoring social points.

Excellent parts of the podcast: Chris challenging Colin's take on female gamers stats, with great argumentation. Dustin's opinion on Horizon service game feedback. And especially this quote from Chris: "there is an economy now build around rooting for a game to fall down" - THIS! F THIS! It is the spot-on comment. It is also exactly on par with what I wrote to LSM about. It is a factor in what is going on and not as minimal as plenty of people try to make it.

ROME.

True, but maybe Jaffe with Chris, Brad, Dustin and hopefully that very nice podcast that Jaffe had with Gene over at his channel. That would be dope

Chris also said he absolutely thinks that people overstate how much online hate of games affects how well they do. He specifically said he doesn't think it has anything to do with why High Guard failed and that games that are actually good will do well no matter how they are treated online. All the whining from games media and developers about online hate is just a red herring deflecting away from the fact that they made games that most people don't want to play.

Germanos

I understand this that the point is getting across to them slowly. A few podcasts ago the boys didn't acknowledge the issue as worth discussing, so it is progress. I don't fully remember what Chris said here, but is not that he is without merrit, but maybe slightly off. An fantastic game will do great no matter what the internet says. A great game - could. But a game that is in the mid, that tries (for the love of god) something different, has absolutely no chance if is being targeted by the hate mobs on YouTube and TikTok.
