It's me, Colin. Please welcome LSM tech analyst, friend-of-the-show, YouTuber, and podcaster Moore's Law Is Dead (aka Tom) back to Sacred+. Today, we convene (as we always do when we gather) to talk about hardware, and there's a whole lot to touch on. For starters, rumors rum amok about PS6, a device Sony hasn't announced yet, but one we know is coming. There are questions, though. When should we expect it? Will it be delayed? How much will it cost? If Tom's right, you'll still see it next fall at a surprisingly cheap pricepoint. We also get into the questionable future of Xbox with its upcoming Magnus PC (which sounds quite expensive), and focus-in on Sony's true threat as we move into the next generation: Valve and its Steam Machine, which will likely launch in the coming months. Thing is, it'll be weaker than the PlayStation 5, not to mention PlayStation 6. And Valve doesn't have access to anywhere close to the economies of scale that Sony does. Will it matter? Let's get into it!Please Note: This episode was recorded days prior to Microsoft's reveal of Xbox's Project Helix.

Big M.A.C.

Was really hoping for the RE Requeim spoiler cast today, hopefully that'll be next week

Good to hear from Tom again! If ps6 truly comes out next fall, I think I’ll buy the handheld version and keep my ps5 pro for the tv. I don’t need a new home console yet. Handheld is super exciting, though!

Save Scum Goblin

The way Tom is talking about the PS6 makes it seem like Moore’s Law isn’t dead after all.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

My 2 cents on the PS6 is that because of how Sony has been talking and acting regarding exclusives and cross generation, what will I get on the PS6 that I can't do on my PS5 Pro? It will boil down the exclusive games. I can't imagine there will be any real significant PS6 exclusives. We already know that most of the first party teams have been wasting years making live service garbage, most of which has been cancelled. What could they POSSIBLY have ready for PS6?

Envydiel

PS4 hardware was already years old and outdated by the time it launched, especially still having a 5200rpm HDD in 2013. PS5 hardware was much closer to par with contemporary standards and the M.2 drives were better than what was available at the time of release, so the system has aged far better in comparison to PC hardware generations. I'm absolutely keen for a PS6, mostly because my PS5 is having heat issues and I don't want to rebuy a PS5. Also, performance upgrades are always welcome for hardware enjoyers, even if I'm going to be playing the same game.

Aaron

Im ready for a playstation handheld that i can just play anywhere without need for internet but as far as the main console goes, i could wait another 3 years as i dont feel we've seen all we have in regards to the PS5, but if the PS6 were to come out then i would get it. Awesome episode guys, love hearing what Tom has to say. As soon as the PS6 comes out they have to dump the PS4 and completely stop making games for it as if not we'd have 3 sku's for games

Aaron

I think if the PS6 comes within a £100 of the base PS5 then people will skip the PS5 from PS4 in mass droves and jump to PS6 and likewise, PS5 owners will jump to PS6

Cousin Kenny

This conversation has reconceptualized my thoughts on the new Xbox. It seems like they are going the same direction as the steam machine. Did Microsoft and valve come to the same conclusion? Are they ceding the ground against PlayStation and Nintendo and instead waging a war against the steam machine?

Even if it’s 3x more powerful nobody has the budget to push games like that, frequently enough to warrant buying the machine en masse. Sony would really have to somehow increase the fidelity of their studios and crank the output so that there’s a big reason to upgrade.

Jacob Lesperance

I can only speak for myself. I upgraded my base PS5 to a pro because I know every game will be cross gen when PS6 launches. I'm not getting one till at least 2029. I agree with Colin. The hype is not there gor a bee console.

NeO JD

Gonna have to see the exclusives and what the difference is before I jump to 6. Still don’t even feel like I’m getting much out of the pro. How Tom described Project Helix though has increased my interest in that.

I'm halfway through at the moment and I think Tom really knows his stuff but seems really quite tunnel-visioned in his analysis. Also, what does "2-3 times more beautiful mean?" It's an incredibly nebulous phrasing that really doesn't hold water. Ray Tracing is a singular technology and saying that there could be a possibility where ps6 titles couldn't run on a lot of computers seems quite credulous to me, I don't have the technical know-how but that seems quite hard to square with what's happening now and has been happening for a few years. And PlayStation suddenly switching course and releasing remasters of exclusives of games like Folklore or Tokyo Jungle would probably not move any units outside of us weirdos and seems just insanely unlikely? I'm not sure what to make of this characterization of the PS6 tbh. Also, it seems a little off to talk about the potential success of the PS6 while barely touching on any socioeconomic factors. It just doesn't seem like the full picture, just a very narrow view of the technology and component markets and expanding that information to cast sweeping generalizations about the console. I'm glad the Colin pushed back on that exclusives point a bit. I may be way off the mark but just my observations.

Colin: ‘Stimulus for WHAT?!’ ‘Government was feeding us money’ I don’t know if I’m out of pocket but what is Colin even talking about??

Kevin Britts

I think the main reason Valve wants to do stuff like the Steam Deck and Steam Machine is simply because they find it to be a fun thing to give their fans. Not everything has to be a cold, calculated business that does just the bare minimum. Sure they want to make a profit on these, but I still believe that since they are a private entity they can just say fuck it and do whatever they want.

Kevin Cooper

I'm kind of in the same boat as Colin... It really does feel like we're only halfway through this generation. But in the same breath I would absolutely buy a PS6 Day 1.

Benjamin Pope

Great episode Colin. Love hearing from Tom. His insight is invaluable to a dumbass like me.

Aaron

Nobody in 2019 said it was “too soon” for the PS5.

Aaron

Anything to blame problems on the previous administration. Interesting he never talks about PPP loans

Beef Burka

yeah, I sure as hell didn't see anyone saying that. Most of us were thinking the PS5 would be the time they made 60fps standard...and of course got disappointed.
