Saros Review Discussion and Spoilercast | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 519

It's me, Colin. Please welcome Last Stand's executive producer Dustin Furman and ex-associate producer (and current games industry man-about-town) Ben Smith back to Sacred+. I've cobbled together this decidedly old-school LSM trio with a purpose: To talk about Housemarque's newest third-person romp, Saros. Since first playing the game more than a month ago, my thesis has been that Saros is a response to Returnal, moreso than a spiritual or literal successor. The game therefore rapidly becomes a litany of small and large changes that make it truly distinct from Housemarque's previous fare. Thus, the main lingering question is: Do these various choices work? How's the gunplay? The upgrade systems? The optional content? The Trophies? And what the heck's the story about anyway? (Truth be told, we're all in various stages of lost.) There's no doubt that Saros is a great game, especially mechanically. It's a true joy to play. What's left to wonder is if Returnal's mystique and 'get-good' nature has been lost in the mix, and this, of course, is all a matter of taste. Please enjoy.

Colin, I think youd appreciate this. A job listing just went live for a Senior External Development Manager located in Helsinki, Finland. https://careers.playstation.com/senior-external-development-manager/job/6013874004 The job title reads: As a Senior External Development Manager, you will work with the talented teams behind RETURNAL and SAROS to help drive the next evolution of Housemarque games. Figured I’d share this given the uncertainty around the studio and the game’s softer performance. Based on this, it appears they’re at least moving forward with development on another game.

Really disappointed with this one. I also did a spoilercast with a friend of mine and couldn't have more praise for the game and story. We spent 2 hours discussing the game. Especially the lack of discussion here around the story aspects, the dreams, and the twists the game pulls on you about Arjun - did he kill his wife? Did she cheat on him? Did he cheat? Did he push Sebastian through a hotel window? How did Echelon 1 turn into bosses? How does the game relate to Roberta W. Chambers' book "King in yellow"? I said it once you started playing it: you made your mind about he game in the first hours and fixated on the modifies for god knows what reason. Shame. Guess Housemarque should pack their bags, since the people who SHOULD BE INVESTED THE MOST in PS Studios games lack the willingness to go deep.

I agree. I understand that this was a busy week and they probably just wanted to get this spoiler cast off the books, but it felt uninspired. Zero story discussion and focusing on the negatives for a game they thought was good. Every positive had a caveat and by the end we’re asking Housemarque to do remasters or change the genre that they make games in. “Wait for a sale” Ultimately, it’s the game’s fault if it really didn’t connect with them deeply, but as someone who really enjoyed it and paid attention to the story, this was a difficult listen.

There is something itchy about using "fault" in this case, while I do understand your point. I said it already in the comments before, and I will say it again: Colin and others made up their opinion on the game very early on and just stayed in that mindset for some reason. About the weapons, about the story, and about bs arguments on cutscenes and modifiers - they just solidified their stance and didn't allow it to move. Ditching anything the game does, and it does a lot as you and I know. So I think the fault is not entirely on the game here.

it's sad no one mentioned the machine gun crossbow. once i found that i've never used another weapon. it's a beast. just infinite ammo, no reload malarkey, and it does chip damage over time because the darts are electric, and you can camp behind pillars and shoot the side of the room since the darts have homing they generally found the target. it was just a beast. all good, no bad.

Any game that tells most of its story through logs and collectibles loses me. I usually end up watching a YouTube video afterward just to understand what actually happened.

Jamie

The worse spoilercast they have ever done.

Its in Polish, so don't think the link will help 😅
