Aloha Patrons!

First, an announcement:

*** All June 2019 Patron Live Events will start at 5:30pm Pacific Time ***

I've heard a lot of feedback from Patrons to make the live events later.  Now that I live in the Hawaii Time Zone (3 hours behind Pacific), it works for my schedule to shift our live events one hour later, which should allow more people to attend live.  (Sorry to my European friends, I will do something special for you all soon, that's based in your time zone!)

I will be sure to send lots of reminders about the time change.  We will try it this month and see how it goes.  Thanks for accommodating!

Welcome to June, and a warm welcome to all the new Patrons!  Thanks for joining us here!  If you are a new Patron, please introduce yourself in the comments below. Feel free to share how long you've been playing, what kind of uke you play, if you have an uke club to play with, what songs you've been working on. And if you've been a Patron for a while and want to share, please go ahead. This is a good place for your questions too - fellow Patrons, feel free to help me answer any newbie questions.

Thanks to all of you for directly supporting my work and for creating a powerful and positive online ukulele community.

A note for newbies - I know Patreon can be a bit hard to navigate. Please be patient and explore, and be sure to join our secret Patrons-Only Facebook group  (email patronhelp@cynthialin.com with your facebook email address - more info in the Community Notes at the bottom of this post.)  Our community on facebook is active and supportive, and it's the best place to post any question you have about Patreon or ukulele. I also recommend downloading our CL Patron App, which has links to all my channels and resources (see Community Notes for links to download).

May 2019 recap

May was an eventful month, and I've made a relatively smooth transition to my new Hawaii life. Thanks for all your support and well-wishes!  Be sure to follow my Instagram (@cynthialinmusic) to see videos and livestreams from scenic spots around Honolulu.

In May, details were released for this year's SF Summer Uke Fest, July 27-28, 2019.  Read all about it in this post.  PS the Earlybird discount is over, but Patrons can use the promo code 'patronsrock' for $5 off Festival tix and Concert tix through 6/30. :)  I'll also organize some sort of Patron gathering - look forward to meeting more of you!

In May, I posted three new videos on YouTube.

  • I premiered the "Moon River" dance film collaboration I made with dancer Miche Wong and filmmaker Robert Gomez Hernandez.  Watch it here.
  • I shared a play-along for "Aloha Cynthia," a farewell song that my San Francisco students performed for me, to the tune of "Hanalei Moon." Enjoy it here.
  • I posted a new "Hey Jude" Play-Along video with my students - watch it here.

More May 2019 Patron News:

  • In our May 2019 Live Lesson, I taught "The Girl from Ipanema." The lesson is now available to all Patrons.
  • I taught a new beginner arrangement of “Purple Rain” at our Beginner Live Jam ($10+ Patrons).
  • At our Intermediate Live Jam ($20+ Patrons), we worked on the fingerpicking bossanova version of "Wicked Game" from my Ukulele Days album.

Hello all. I am a new Patron. I have been playing the Uke for only 1 year now. Absolutely love it. Started learning on You tube with you Cynthia after purchasing a mele uke in Wailea at the Mele store there. Since then I bought a Kala uke with a pickup in it. :) Learned from you and your you tube vids. Now I also take private lessons from a gentleman who lives in our neighborhood. Love combining his lessons and your lessons to learn. We started a neighborhood band as well. Excited to go on this journey. Thank you for all the incredible lessons and info.

G’Day All, I am totally new to playing any type of instruments but always wanted to learn something. I decided on the uke as it appears to be a motivating , fun, and very up beat. Cynthia your videos and community are awesome. I made this decision while watching your Here comes the Sun and Banana Pancakes clips on YT. I thought this is for me while in hospital getting some treatment . Who says you can’t make the right decision while under the influence. I have just purchased a Kala KA - SMHT to keep me motivated and commenced private lessons and of course watching a lot of your Videos. Thank you for being a great inspiration to me in my journey. Hello! I'm a new Patron and new to ukulele but have been putting in at least an hour or two a day following your beginner lessons. Skills are growing and the joy of playing is finally setting in. Even my friends don't run away anymore when I practice!

Patti Jones

Hello! I’ve been playing about a year. I already contracted UAS and have a Waterman soprano, Córdoba concert, Balnna concert, and a Kala tenor. I love fingerpicking. There are so many songs to learn and not enough time! I’m having so much fun and look forward to years of playing.

Kevin Francis

Hello everyone! I've been playing Uke consistent since January once I discovered Cynthia's youtube videos. I've learned so much in this short while compared to the lessons I was taking. I picked up my Leolani at a pawn shop a few years ago and now it is getting some use. My daughter is also learning to play and when she comes home, we can actually play together.

Cynthia Lin

g'day brad! i'll be in australia in September, stay tuned for more info. :) and you can join our Aussie Uke Squad on facebook if you like!

Cynthia Lin

welcome Patti! UAS comes on quickly. love your comment about the years of playing ahead - music is rewarding for a lifetime <3

Cynthia Lin

welcome Kevin! so great that uke is easily multi-generational, enjoy jamming with your daughter!

Sarah Thayer

Hello! I received a uke from my husband and little kiddos for Mother’s Day a couple of months ago. I’ve never played before. I came across your utube videos and loved your clear, joyful way of teaching! I am happy to have become a patron. Looking forward to combining your instruction with a local teacher. It’s fun for me to demonstrate the reward of persistence to my young boys — what it looks like to try something beyond one’s comfort level, that it is okay to not be good at something at the beginning, and the how consistent practice is required to become better.

Thank you, Cynthia, for the great updates! 🌈❤💚💜💙💛

linda cunningham

Hi Cynthia, my name is Linda, i'm from New Zealand & have been playing along to your You Tube tutorials for a while now & am loving the way you teach! am really looking forward to being able to Jam with yourself & other Uke players! am not sure how to work out time zones though...lol! so help with that would be appreciated! my partner is a really good guitar player & has tried teaching me how to play, but struggled with it, so thought a Uke might be better! so i brought a plug in Kala brand & love it!

Cynthia Lin
