Aloha, Patrons!

(quick note: I'm back from the land Down Under! more on that soon (or check my instagram for pics), but in the mean time, a big thank you to my Aussie squad, and what a joy to meet so many Aussie Patrons!!)

Because it came so close to winning this month's Patron Vote (it lost by just one vote! every vote counts!!), I've decided to share with you the full lesson for Neil Young's "Harvest Moon," which I taught as part of my Mixed-level Ukulele 6-Class Series back in Fall 2017. This bonus lesson is available to all Patrons. :) Special shoutout to Eric, one of our early Patreon Forum Managers, who's been requesting this song for a very long time.

Please keep in mind that this recording was made for a mixed-level class. I create my lessons for a wide range of players, and I ask you to adjust your focus based on what benefits you most.  Also, you might notice that this lesson format is different than my usual Patreon Live Lessons.  That's partly because there is a live class in the room with me, and also because I've evolved as a teacher since 2017.  Please keep that in mind as you watch.

If you are a beginner, focus on chord shapes, transitions and the "shuffle island" strumming rhythm, and slowly work up to the riffs.  Enjoy yourself - you can always single strum if you like!

As my students know, I include more advanced elements to make sure the intermediate folks stay challenged, and sometimes to capture more of the sound of the original recording.

I really enjoyed creating this lesson, and I believe all levels can have fun playing this arrangement.

For our “official” Live Lesson this month, I taught the vote winner, Cat Steven's (now known as Yusuf) “Wild World.”  If you're a $5+ Patron, you can watch that lesson now over at this post, and the lesson will be made available to all Patrons next month (actually, I'll just go ahead and make it available now).

Enjoy, and let me know if you have questions!

xo cynthia.

Harvest Moon - Bonus Patreon Lesson

This lesson is taken from a recorded live class in San Francisco, circa November 2017. So you can see that my teaching format has evolved since this class! The class was at the Advanced Beginner / Intermediate level but moves at a pretty slow pace. Visit the patreon post to get the chord chart.

I'm so happy this is a bonus session! Was bummed Harvest Moon didn't make it!

Maree Smith

This is supremely generous of you, Cynthia. Thanks so much.

Sinelle Aloha

Thank you! You make my day! ❤️❤️❤️

Eric Guerin

Ha ha thank you for the shout out, but it's definitely not necessary. That said I'm very happy that this arrangement is available! It's a song that adapts really well to the range of the ukulele, at least I feel it does. So I've really been looking forward to it and upvoting it for a while now. That said, no matter what the song is that wins the vote I always learn something new in every live lesson. I like when the song is one I don't know very well because sometimes it becomes more of a challenge! Aloha!

Lindsay Hambright

Very nice! I like the Em riff...it adds a lot of character to the song. Thank you!

Thank you for the bonus lesson! This is such a pretty song. Hope you’re feeling better and while I can’t speak for all patrons, please take time off to rest your voice and your body after your tour. If that means cancelling a live lesson until next month so be it. You give so much to everyone you deserve some time to take care of yourself :-) 🤒

Marion Tor

Thank you for Harvest Moon. A number of challenges that stretch my playing skills that are necessary to master. Feel better!

Patricia Hurley

Thank you! I’ve been wanting this for awhile too - so pretty and fun to play. And as always, thanks for the tips and reminders like the muting - that really takes it from a play-through to a real performable song!

Heidi

Thank you so much Cynthia! Great lesson for a great song. I always appreciate the extra things you do for us. You’re so sweet!

Thank you for posting this lesson! - I've shared it with the Ukulele Posse I play with!

I notice you don't use a bar D chord on the 2nd fret and pinky on the 4th fret of the A string. Would it not make this a lot easier??

Jenny Selig

I am not speaking for Cynthia, but I took this class and learned this song, and in my mind it would make it sound wrong, because you want the note on the A string to walk up from open (D) to second fret (D6) to 4th fret (Dmaj7). So it was designed to make that sound happen, rather than starting with a high note on the D you describe.

mary

Cynthia, I'd love to know if that is a concert orTenor ukulele you are playing? Low G??
