Welcome to our monthly vote! Please note that voting closes Tuesday, February 11th at 11:59 PM Pacific Time.

How the Song of the Month works

Here's the TL/DR version of what happens with the Song of the Month:

1. All Patrons vote! (in this post! Scroll down and see the song options below!)

2. I'll create an arrangement for the winning song and teach a Live Lesson (access for $5+ Patrons) and give early access (the next day) to $3 Patrons.

3. All Patrons receive access to the recorded hour-long Live Lesson the following month.

THANK YOU PATRONS for directly supporting the creation of these higher production Play-Alongs! Click these links to find all Play-Along posts and Live Lesson posts.

About Cynthiaʻs Pick

The first few selections are songs that have been at the top of the worldwide charts for several months - if you haven't heard them yet, please check them out!  "Dance Monkey" is my nephews' and niece's request, and has been a hit in my 5@5. 🐒🐵

"Someone You Loved" was nominated for Song of the Year and will be a fun vocal challenge, and "Bad Guy" won the Grammy for Song of the Year and has been highly requested on my YouTube.  I always learn something from working on a well-written song, and I'm excited to work on these.

What songs have friends been requesting from you?  Let me know in the comments, along with your own song request.  Be sure to upvote your fellow Patrons' comments, and add your own comments about the songs you love. (See below for instructions)

HOW TO VOTE

1. Click on the check box for as many of the song choices as you like below - yes, multiple votes are allowed. Please note - as soon as you tick the checkbox, the vote is counted. (You can look at the ticker on the right! Sometimes the ticking doesn't work on certain devices - in this case, try your laptop or desktop vs tablet or mobile.)

2. Comment with ONE SONG that you’d want for next month's live lesson. Remember that our Patrons span all across the world, so the songs that tend to win are worldwide, classic hits. I will also keep your suggestions in mind for our other monthly lessons. Please keep it to one song suggestion per person.

3. Upvote other people's song choices by clicking the heart on their comment. Upvotes are an easy way to double your voting power! Your upvotes matter, so I encourage you to come back and look through your fellow Patrons' comments to upvote.

Thank you, and happy voting!

Stefan Dzwonnik

Come on people, we can't have the old songs all the time!

Paul Wescombe

Stefan, sometimes the old songs give us inspiration to create our own 'new songs'.

Stefan Dzwonnik

I'm not saying old songs are bad, I'm saying we've voted for the old ones many times now. Lets vote for the fresher ones this month!

Berenice

Dance Monkey by gorgeous young Australian, 'Tones & I' would be lots of fun xx

SONIA BARDES

Please we need to learn news songs !! 🙏🙏🙏

Sugar .

Could we also have "copycat" by Billie Eilish as a choice one month?

Chipper Williams

Really? Sounded like you were blaming everyone that you didn’t get your way. My mistake. Must of been the way your started your first comment with “Come on people”. Figured I was people and should reply.

Chipper Williams

Well, your first comment was condescending to “people” here and offensive. It was like you were blaming people with your exclamation points. I don’t know what you expected with that but, I took offense and replied in kind.

Maria Müller

The Free Electric Band by Albert Hammond

Chipper Williams

So I embarrassed you. That explains your attempts at justification. Look, I said it was my mistake when you said you were advocating but, I will go back and forth for as long as you like. I’m not bothered by how it looks to other people.

Stefan Dzwonnik

Look, you keep pushing me to continue the conversation by asserting that you were morally correct, in this case when you said "I embarrased you" and forcing me to defend myself. I'm not at all embarrased I'm just annoyed now. I'm as equally keen to end this exchange as you are.

Mel Edwards

Any chance of something a little more upbeat??....

Carol

Rosa

I would like to learn "When you love someone" by Lukas Graham

Petra

i would really love to learn EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE, it's such a great song :-) best regards from Austria!!

Cynthia Lin

Let’s keep it Aloha. Each person is entitled to advocate for their choice, and we need to embrace each other’s choices with positivity - that’s my rule. 🙏🏽 Remember, it’s just a monthly song poll, so there’s no need to take any of this personally. Perhaps we can alternate between old songs and new songs from month to month for variety.

Linda Myrick

Memories (Maroon 5) - interesting rhythm!

Sylvia

Something by Elton John

Sylvia

Losing My Religion!!!!!

Abby Joslin

It's somewhat underrepresented on the ukulele tutorial circuit.... we could fix that! :)

Jenny Selig

I'm going to listen to the three I haven't heard before, before I vote on the poll, BUT for the future I would love to learn Royals, by Lorde, which is not new but is also not old. ;)

Jenny Selig

What have folks been requesting from me? Anything by The Magnetic Fields. "Nothing Matters When We're Dancing" is a current fave. I'd love a good arrangement of that.

Jenny Selig

I don't know this song, but they're so great, and a banjolele arrangement would be awesome. So I agree!

Jenny Selig

I had to arrange this one for myself, but a Cynthia arrangement would be even better.

Julie Rogers

Love the new stuff! Would be nice to have a break from The Beatles (no offense). I'm still rooting for Hazy Shade of Winter by Simon & Garfunkel (covered by The Bangles)

Mitsue Mikawa

I'd never heard of Dance Monkey and the story behind Tones and I. She is a great artist. wow. Love this way of getting to know new artists!

Polyxeni

"Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica

Polyxeni

I like the idea of alternating between old and new songs from month to month :)

Polyxeni

I hope we'll get to do a Billie Eilish song, if not this month maybe next month or sometime soon

Susan Alexander

Oh no! Not ANOTHER Beatles song! Boring!

Sheilah Seaberg

"Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" Otis Redding

Cate Eales

I'm going to keep requesting Angel From Montgomery until we get it! Fair warning! :-)

Stefie

Yes! Beatles!

Shelley Rubzow

I enjoy I learning both new and “classic” songs. For now I know this song is old but I would love to see Bohemian Rhapsody finished. Sorry for sounding like a broken record. I might have to up my pledge to $50 then request it a year from now. Then I will share it with Annie Wong :-) 👑

molly ferrer

I'm with you Shelley, I love the song but as it is it ends right when things really get going :)

Shelley Rubzow

Thanks Molly, the one good thing is that by the time we learn Part 3, I will have Parts 1 & 2 well-rehearsed 😃

Dorain Jacobs

I think "Feeling Good" by Nina Simone would make a good tutorial

Nick

Would it make sense to group songs in the monthly poll just a little bit, so that there's a chance for less conventional stuff to make it into the monthly live lesson? I don't really like the "classical" slow / lyrical songs with a lot of singing, but there's a log of people who do, which "takes over" the polls. Haven't had a single piece I would really enjoy in the last half a year... Would love to see something more energetic like Dance Monkey or All is Found played once in a while.

Nick

+1 for that. I would so much love to learn and play something kids/teenagers could relate to and get excited about. But no, we are going to have a song from 55 years ago, which has been covered a million times. Sorry for grumbling, but this just upsets me.

Cynthia Lin

aloha nick, i think that's a great suggestion, and there's definitely room for discussion for how to organize the votes so that they offer more variety. any thoughts on different categories to group for the poll? aside from current songs vs older songs? that's where we can start. any one can jump in here!

Cynthia Lin

i hear and understand the grumbling, because i like song variety too. let's use the discussion for constructive suggestions on how to make changes for the poll going forward. i'm open to ideas!

Catherine Sherlock

Cynthia has done this one. I can't find it on youtube, so maybe it was on Patreon - I just know I have sheet music for it. Can anyone direct Sheilah to it?

Catherine Sherlock

I can see clearly now - Johnny Nash; When you say nothing at all - Alison Krauss; Bad Moon Rising; A Thousand Years; Fields of Gold; Titanium; In the Arms of an Angel: Say Something (I'm giving up on you)

Stefie

Though I love the Beatles, I also love to learn a variety of songs. I guess it just so happened that “In my life” was put up against other songs a lot didn’t care about. It was a safety net.

Austin Colotti

Jolene is epic. We gotta vote for this one!

Cynthia Lin

aloha all! i hear you loud and clear! it's time we make a change to make sure we have more variety in our song of the month. thank you for your feedback - this community has over 3000 members, and i need to hear what you want. please share your thoughts, and let's keep the discussion constructive and respectful. i will gather your ideas and share some options for moving forward in a different thread. i look forward to making changes for the better for our community. ❤️

Austin Colotti

Random, but Queen of Hearts. Now that's a song a would love to hear Cynthia play!

Nick

Aloha to you too! I can think of two things which I personally care about. The first one would be songs, which kids / teenagers are familiar with and which could get them excited to try out ukulele if they heard the song played live. Anything goes, e.g. something from Frozen, or The Chain by Fleetwood Mac, or Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa. I figure something from Bohemian Rhapsody could do well too, because of how popular the movie was. Unfortunately I have absolutely zero understanding of how good any of those songs might sound on ukulele. And the second category would be songs which sound good both with and without actual singing (it is my personal struggle though, not sure if anybody else would be interested in that). But at the end of the day, I think I would be happy with any sort of monthly theme setup, which would bring it bring in more variety.

Susan Johnston

Alternate each month with current songs to choose from one month and classic songs to choose from the next month

Adriana Yon

The Girl by City and Colour

Faith Faith

How about 2 times a year have a Wild Card pick, meaning a theme such as happy dance music or music from a movie or music about the stars.....are ya picking up what I’m putting down? 😉

Stefie

Hi Cynthia. Would twice a month be too much? One for classics and one for recent songs. It may encourage more patrons to sign up. Just an idea/suggestion of course. Thank you so much for your hard work, spreading love and joy and for bringing us together in the uke community. Mahalo 💕

Sarah Ong

Yes I'd love this! I do love the arrangements of older songs, but I really am feeling like my votes for more recent songs never make it through. Would have LOVED to have done Bad Guy and Dance Monkey. I also agree doing more recent songs may also encourage more patrons to sign up.

Shauna L

I wish people would trust Cynthia's judgment on some of these - she knows how the arrangement will go. I would any day rather do Dance Monkey (which I had never heard before now) than another Beatles song.

Katherine Tam

Hi Cynthia — first, thanks for letting us vote for songs and creating a lovely community here! Like many others, I appreciate variety. Many of the songs that win are >15 years before my birth and I haven’t heard of them before. One idea might be to alternate years each month? (E.g. if the Beatles song is the feb winner, then that covers 1965. then March’s options could all be songs from say 2015-2020. April could bounce back to the 1960s. May could be all 1980s options). Another idea could be categories, like songs from Oscar-winning movies from 2010-2020 or classics from the 1970s. To make it effective, all the song options for that given month would follow the theme. Otherwise it’s likely that if a Beatles song is offered among a pool of 1990s songs, the Beatles song will prevail. Just tossing out a couple ideas. Thanks for all you do!

Polyxeni

Another Beatles song is bad for variety and does not excite me at all, the lyrics are childish 😒 I think we should consider diversity & inclusion of sexes, races, ages, ethnicities, styles of artists 🙂

Polyxeni

I think we should consider diversity & inclusion of genders, races, ages, ethnicities, styles of artists 🙂

Lorrt

Shauna I agree. I need to play for the youth to. Get with the times. Monkey dance is a cool song. The video is awesome. Hope Cynthia does teach us that one. Love to see how Cynthia picks and interprets it. Here's hoping.

Maria Moon

As an experiment, perhaps try alternate months - one month for old classics, and the other month for new songs? I think we can learn a lot from both. And I don't know if this is possible, but I would love to learn how to create our own songs. :)

Betty Rubish

Black Horse and The Cherry Tree, by KT Tunsdall my new favorite song! We all need a looper!

John Gambel

Hi Cynthia, Thank you for continually bringing some of the more current songs to the patreon community. I enjoy the newer songs while I still have a great appreciation for the classic songs. This month I voted for In My Life because it is one of my favorite Beatle ballads. Sounds like there are a number of chord changes which is always challenging and fun to learn, Please continue to introduce newer songs in the monthly lessons. I really enjoyed All is Found. The picking pattern was a challenge and fun to learn. Please keep up the great work in bringing music to all of us on this little instrument that we all love. Best to you!

Jenny Selig

Agreed. I really think we need to do one of hers. Cynthia is perfect for the arrangements, too.

Kristy

Would love to see Sucker by the Jonas Brothers or Lover by Taylor Swift as a monthly lesson

Kristy

This would be awesome to hear Cynthia's arrangement. Such a well known, crowd pleasing song!

Polyxeni

Maybe we could do a medley of Billie's songs, that would be fun 🙂

Sugar .

I have quite specific preferences to what I like (and don't) but I have to say, even for the songs that won that I didn't vote for, I've learnt something new almost every time, and sometimes discovered a new song I never realised existed but I now love! It's a big community and I think Cynthia does a pretty wonderful job trying to cater for everyone. Remember there are people all the way from teens (and younger) to over 60s, 70s and more! Voting might not always result in the song you want but it's fair, and take it as an opportunity to work on new technique, or chords, strum etc :)

Polyxeni

It's true that we always learn, even when the voted song isn't our favorite. It can take us out of our bubble and expand our horizons, also make us explore new techniques. Keeping in touch with new music is good for the brain, and not losing the classic treasures is important too. Thank you Cynthia for the amazing work that you do, I guess now you are so popular and your members' base is expanding so much and that brings some complexity. We all appreciate you so much, that's why we are fighting over which song you will arrange for us :)

Patricia Lebreton

Remember that if you join at the $20 level you get not just one song per month but three (and 2 at the $10 level). Cynthia already does a great job of creating variety across these three monthly lessons - for example she did All is Found last month in the intermediate lesson - so this might be your solution if the songs you want are not winning the monthly vote. $20 is incredible value for three, high quality lessons per month. She is not paying me to say this.

Maree Smith

When I look over the years of songs that have been chosen, it’s true many classics have made it, but there’s been newer ones too. As a result, I have a great repertoire. I don’t always like the song chosen, but I have always learnt something new. I think it works well as is, the new songs have to earn their place against the classics.

Eric Guerin

I've been working on a fingerpicking version of "The Book of Love" by The Magnetic Fields

Binh Alley (Lily)

Jenny, you could listen to this song. It is a beautiful song I've heard on local radio station. I love to get into banjolele ;)

Anya Smirnova

Cynthia, How about selecting monthly topics. E.g. one month every season it's a new ish song month (not older than 10 years) and only new songs are included in the vote, so a new song is guaranteed to win. Once a year, it's a jazz song month, and only jazz songs are included in the vote. Once a year, it's a musical theatre song month. Other months, it's a mix of songs, just like now. This way each year there will be at least 4 new ish songs, 2 different style songs, and the remaining 6 songs will have a selection of different songs like today and will cater to your audience at large.

Fernanda Alves

I'm going to throw something to the suggestion mix: "In Hell I'll Be in Good Company" by The Dead South. It looks like a fun song, and it's catchy!

Susan Alexander

The saving grace of all the “tired” songs is that Cynthia’s arrangements are always beautiful and fun to play. I didn’t want to do “Killing Me Softly”, but I was surprised at how much I enjoy playing it. We

Patty Kim

I would be so happy to learn any of the songs in this month's vote - yay!

Deborah Redfern

There is a reason why the classics keep coming up. It is because they are so well written. A lot of current music does not have the same complexity of the classics, even though they may be catchy tunes. There is a trend even of sampling from the riffs from these previous classic song to make them more interesting. I think we have a good balance of classics and contemporary, and lately the beginner jam new song has been a contemporary song.

Deborah Redfern

And, I will vote for Billie Eilish: Everything I wanted.

Deborah Redfern

And, in the same kind of theme, I just heard this song Hold On Forever by Rob Thomas. I have a special spot for 'healing' types of songs. It is upbeat.

Stephanie Kugler

Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream , Simon & Garfunkel would be a great song to be playing to help heal the world we are living in.

Pam

Jolene is one of my favorites. We really play it with feeling in a group I belong to. I sometimes get out of breath since we play and sing it so fast. It is a terrific song and I would love to play another arrangement.

Polyxeni

Cynthia maybe we can do a medley of songs sometimes, you know how they do multiple lines of songs together in one piece? To keep a few more people happy. Not that it's a substitute for the real thing (the whole song), but it could be fun :)

Rosemarie Watkins

It looks like *In My Life* will win this month. I'd be glad to see *Dance Monkey*, *Angel from Montgomery* and *Lovesong* in the running again.

Smudge

Please keep Angel from Montgomery on the list! Jolene sounded great too!!

Smudge

Also, I have loved working on Stars Fell on Alabama --- hoping for more arrangements at that level. Thank you!!

Linda Askren

Wherever You Will Go, The Calling

Tatjana Hauber

i agree with Pam, I am also playing it in my group and it would be fun to see your arrangement :-) Thanx a lot Cynthia! You are great!

Desiderata

Van Morrison-Days like this

Toni Jennings

Geronimo’s Cadillac by Michael Martin Murphey

Carmen

Talk Show Host- Radiohead

Lynn

I think the medley comment is a good idea...no specific songs...but possibly songs that suit both a male or female performer that crossover and more strumming than picking or that option...upbeat...Runaway by the Corrs or something similar, Half a World Away, Oasis, for Christmas would love Christmas Time is Here, Vince Guaraldi, cause the key is a challenge

Janet Amos

Angus & Julia Stone - Chateau

Carol Phillips

I rarely vote any more. I have learned so much from all of the songs that have been chosen by others. I also trust Cynthia Lin to make an arrangement that makes us all sound like accomplished musicians! I love the idea of mixing it up. One thing I would like to see is a song that has two parts to it. The beginner level song that challenges them to learn something new. Then for the intermediate/advanced players there is a harmony piece using chord inversions, different picking patterns, etc. that will allow us to accompany the beginners. That way the intermediate level patrons can watch the beginner sessions and practice their chord inversions and then at the intermediate lesson learn the challenging parts. Then we could partner up like Maggie and Jordyn and accompany each other! I do watch the beginner lessons now and try to practice my chord inversions but I am never sure which ones to use, and what is a different pattern to do, etc. Would love some help taking it to the next level! Thanks to everyone for opening up my musical world!

Sugar .

What a great idea! I'd love to pair up with more people and what a great way to encourage each other. Fabulous idea!

Amanda Matheson

Cynthia I think you should choose our songs sometimes just to make sure that there is enough variation in terms of style of music.

Glenda

I want Dance Monkey on the ballot again!

Susan near the lakes

"I'm your Captain/Closer to home" By Grand Funk would sound Great on the uke - there are several tempo changes and the intro would really be cool! - a shortened version as the original is 10:00 minutes

jeanfee

Cynthia, thank you for being so responsive to our feedback. I love the idea of learning more modern tunes, but I do like some of the oldies, as well. You do a great job of choosing fun songs.

William

For your current song consideration: Beautiful Crazy by Luke combs, Tequila by dan and shay, Rainbow by Kacey Musgraves or for that matter anything by Kacey!

Susan Marcin

"Pilot of the Airwaves" Charlie Dore

Selin Kaptana

"What He Wrote" by Laura Marling!
