6/11 - updated with corrected chart

Aloha, Patrons!

I'll see you Thursday, May 20 at 5:30pm Pacific Time for our monthly Live Lesson.  If you click on the video above, you’ll see a countdown for your time zone. (Find all Patron events on our Patron Google calendar).

Tune in here: https://youtu.be/9jucPcAu9-U

This month's Live Lesson: "New Day" + our first rhythm notation lesson!

First, thanks for supporting me in sharing a lesson for an original song.  I know it's harder to learn a song that's not familiar (yet!) - hopefully you can listen to the song and appreciate the message.  Watch a live version of "New Day" here (already in play-along format!): https://youtu.be/hgpa0ey4N-g

On the second page of the music attached below, you'll see something new - the intro is written out in musical rhythm notation.  When I was tabbing out the intro, I needed a better way to articulate the rhythm.  I decided to take this opportunity to introduce musical rhythm notation for the first time in our lessons.

Please don't fret if you are new to reading music - since it's new for everyone, we'll take it super slow.  I'll also focus on teaching the main picking and strumming parts of the song first, and save the rhythm notation for the end of the lesson.  I'll teach the expanded/advanced intro of the song with a primer of reading rhythm notation for those who are interested.

If you're new to rhythm notation, I'd recommend watching this video explaining the basic concepts of rhythm notation.  Again, I'll guide us through these concepts together in the lesson and answer all your questions. :)

And we'll warm up with a review of Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Love Me" from last month's Live Lesson.

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

How to Watch Live

Great lesson as always! I really enjoy when you challenge us with new material. Thanks for all you do to expand my ukulele skills.

Jacqueline Stoy

Great to have the rhythm notation. I struggle with keeping rhythm And this is great.

SONIA BARDES

Beautiful Song !! Thank you so much Cynthia to give us the possibility to play it and sing it ! I love it :D As a piano player, "the solfege" - in french - is for sure the only international way to understand rythme and the basics of music ! Thank you to put it a well :D

Ann E Kuehnel

Love this song, Cynthia Lin! This was my first Patreon lesson and I'm looking forward to going back to some of your previous lessons. I've learned a lot from you on YouTube. Thank you for having so many fun, FREE resources!

Dina

Hi Everyone! I’m so very glad to be part of this Cynthia Lin community!! 💕💕🌸💕💕 Have a magically delicious ukulele day!

Jenny Selig

Fascinating! I had to put my son to bed and missed that conversation. Thanks for sharing here. At least the "American" convention relates to math, is my thought, so that folks who have to translate can use the fractions/numbers to remember what the terms mean.

Lynn Corin

Jenny I love all that. And yes I find the American system makes it easier for me to understand (and explain) numbers in time signatures. Explaining say 3/4 to your average 9 year old makes much more sense when you say "Each bar has three quarter note beats," rather than "Whenever you see a 4 at the bottom, we're talking about crotchets!"

SONIA BARDES

Yeah i'm agree with all of you :) I am french and we do have : ronde, blanche, noire, croche, demi croche, quart de croche... and a complete different vocabulary for notes and stuff :)))

Laura Woz

What an inspiring picking pattern! (both basic and your more intricate version) They make me feel... anticipation!

Rachel McCrimmon

Finally got to watch this lesson! SOOO happy to be learning some of the notation though it is difficult. Great song for the moment.

Lisa Hsu

beautiful original song!

Emily Grace

Do you have a place where we can submit song requests for tutorials? I'd love to have one on Olivia Newton John's "Let Me Be There" and The Bee Gees "Don't Forget to Remember Me".

Thanks for sharing ! I watched all didn’t play ... I’ll watch again to play with it 💥
