Exciting news! Ukulele Festival Hawaii has invited us to share a squad flash mob video for their virtual festival. Fellow uke enthusiast Lien Kratzke (of the Kratzke Sisters) did a brilliant job editing our latest flashmob, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" flashmob featuring Jake Shimabukuro, and she has agreed to edit a new flashmob for the festival.
Lien and I came up with the idea of playing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," and then having folks dress in just one color of the rainbow 🌈 (ie, all in Red or Orange or Yellow or Green or Blue or Violet). Each participant's submission becomes a color tile that Lien can manipulate and edit into color groupings. We'll be a living rainbow! I'm excited to see what Lien does with it!
Song: "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in the key of G
For our flash mob, we'll be using the video linked above as our Follow-Along video: https://youtu.be/g_66szY0rQ4
Though I often teach this song to beginners in the key of C, it can be quite high for some people to sing. I taught this arrangement -- "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in the key of G -- to San Francisco's Aloha Uke Squad for a performance at our Summer Ukesplosion, and it worked out to be a better group performance key. If the song range doesn't work for you, you're welcome to lip-synch or sing an octave up or down as needed. The chord chart is attached to this post, and we'll go over the song this Thursday in our Live Lesson.
As with our other recent flash mob videos (Check out Zombie Heart as a fun example), I invite you to get creative with the theme. We will be assigning a color to each participant (don't worry -- first you'll get to tell us what color options you already have) and we'd love to have you dress and accessorize in that color as fully as possible. If you have furniture or backgrounds that also fit your color theme, feel free to use them! As always, you are welcome to include family members, roommates, and pets in your video - just make sure they are following the color scheme. If you'd prefer not to play your ukulele "live" on camera, you can even just strum and lip-synch with your ukulele and/or your family while playing the follow-along track on speakers -- no need to use headphones in that case.
We have a tight deadline for our submission to the festival. If you're interested in participating, please submit your video by this Sunday June 20. Find more information below on how to submit, and please post any questions in the comments!
I look forward to seeing the rainbow we create!
xo cynthia.

How to Join the "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Virtual Flash Mob:
1. Get a color assignment
If you've already commented on my previous post, check this spreadsheet for your color assignment.
If you don't have a color assignment yet, comment on this post with the color(s) you would find most possible to dress in for this video. Your choices are Red or Orange or Yellow or Green or Blue or Violet! Note that, while we are looking for monochrome (single color) looks, you can certainly wear different tones of the same color. You might even like to match a colored ukulele, if you own one.
Jenny will either reply to your comment with an assignment or add you to the spreadsheet. Thank you, Jenny, for managing the color distribution! 🌈
2. Record your video
Check out these performance and recording tips from 808 Uke Squad and 100 Days Community member Lien-Thanh Kratzke, who is editing this flash mob.
Note that, contrary to the wording in the following graphic, you will be playing along to the attached video, not a sound/audio file.
Guidelines for Recording:
- Record a landscape (horizontal) video, ideally in festive costume pieces, incorporating as much of your assigned color as possible. Please try to keep the background as plain as possible, or part of the color scheme (ie a solid white or colored wall without clutter).
- Practice with one headphone - it takes some getting used to. When recording your video, play the follow-along video on another device. For instance, you may need to play on a laptop/TV or separate speaker while you record with your phone. You want to capture only your audio in the video, so that we can achieve a "virtual choir" effect.
- Have fun! If you make a mistake, smile and keep going. Don't worry, since we're cropping together many performances, you'll blend in. Happy energy is the most important thing to share.
3. Submit your Video
Deadline is Sunday night, June 20, 2021.
- Use the Submission form (preferred method) - If you have a google account, please use this updated link: https://bit.ly/RainbowSubForm (the previous link had an error)
- If you don't have a google account, please make sure your video file is titled with your color, as well as your name and location as you'd like them listed in the credits, and use the free website wetransfer.com to send the video. Add the file, email to cynthialin.team@gmail.com, and hit the Transfer button.
Post questions in the comments below, or in our Patron Facebook group. Thank you!!
