Aloha, Patrons!

Our February All-Levels Live Lesson is Thursday 2/17 at 5:30pm Pacific Time.

Tune in here: https://youtu.be/vbUkvO5x5jE

if you click on the video, you’ll see a countdown for your timezone.  (Find all Patron events on our Patron Google calendar). If you can't join in live, the recording will be available to replay on YouTube, at your convenience. Instructions for joining via YouTube are below.

This month's Live Lesson: "Don't Look Back in Anger" by Oasis

This month's song choice comes courtesy of a Platinum Patron request by Hye Min (who requested "Stop This Train" last year, which I taught to the Intermediate Patrons).  When Hye Min suggested "Don't Look Back in Anger" by Oasis for this year's request, I remembered all the karaoke nights where folks were singing their hearts out to this song (feels like a distant memory now!).  It also has relatively beginner-friendly chords, as well as picking and riffing opportunities to make it more challenging, so I thought it'd be a great fit for our All-Levels Lesson.  Thanks, Hye Min, for sharing this custom arrangement with the Patrons!  (ps there is currently one Platinum tier spot open!  if you're looking for a custom song!)

You can watch a clip of my arrangement for reference.  This arrangement is flexible, in that you can pick or strum, depending on your mood.  I've included high G and low G riff variations, and I'll talk us through the terminology of hammering (h), pulling off (p), bending (b and r), and sliding (s).  The riffs are definitely intermediate level.  For a beginner riff, revisit our Tennessee Whiskey lesson.

This song is also heavily inspired by John Lennon, and I'll talk a little about that as well.  Here's the original by Oasis for reference.

Join our Pre-Lesson Zoom Social

If you're free before the lesson begins and would like to meet and chat with other Patrons on Zoom, join me before class for a Zoom Social from 5:00 to 5:25pm.  (We'll end the Zoom before the lesson, and still go to YouTube for the lesson).  For new Patrons, you can meet Patrons and ask questions.  For longtime Patrons, you can get to know your fellow Patrons a bit more.  Talk about your ukes, share the songs you're currently working on, and connect with fellow Patrons from across the world.  It will be casual, you can drop in anytime, and we'll use the Zoom breakout rooms to move into smaller groups for chatting.  Click here to go to the Zoom Social, or use Meeting ID: 876 1498 3301, Passcode: aloha.

Please comment if you're planning to join the Zoom Social, or you're interested in helping out with more Zoom Socials in the future.  Also, still looking for a punny name for it, share your suggestions below. 😄 Hope to see you there!

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

yay this is going to be a good one! I was supposed to go to Portugal last week but last minute rules there now not allowing Canadians to go for tourism postponed that for another day. Now going to Spain on Friday and I'm so happy I won't miss this lesson now! See you then :-)

Theresa SC

This will be my first live lesson & Zoom with you as I just joined Patreon this week. Looking forward to it all!

Hoping to make it to the Zoom tonight but it will be tight getting home from work, and the roads are supposed to be icey. I should be able to make it to most of the lesson either way. Excited for this one!

I'm mostly sure I can make the Zoom social today, but I might have a work call that overlaps. Grrrrr...

Watched it back today. Man those riffs are hard!! If I ever think I'm not a beginner anymore all I need to do is try a hammer-on/pull-off riff tutorial and then it's painfully obvious I'm really not there yet!

Thanks for this, Been working away a lot in UK. Oasis, my grandmother lived near Noel and Liams Mum and knew her really well. Always chatted with her down at the market. Reminds of her now she has passed, makes me smile. When they became famous, she used to exaggerate her knowledge of them, the Irish are great story tellers. Take care.
