This month's Live Lesson: "Lovesong" by The Cure

Let's start with a review of last month's lesson: "We'll Meet Again."

I am a big fan of The Cure, and this song is a classic.  I played it with Craig and Sarah at 5@5 back in February 2022, and they sound amazing on this tune.  I'm planning to record a performance video with them soon!  My arrangement is in the same key as the original by the Cure, and blends the original rock vibe with Adele's bossa nova version (click for reference videos).  In the lesson, we'll look at strumming variations, and work on that iconic riff.  I'll also talk about the musical differences in the rock style vs bossa nova - you can play it either way, both ways, or any way you wish.

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

Hello, Cynthia, I am wondering about the brackets [ ] in your music. What do they indicate? Just wondering, I have followed your music for a while. Ryan

Jenny Selig

Hi, Ryan! Cynthia usually uses brackets to group together "split measures," which is when chords move more quickly because there are, usually, two where you might typically just see one. So, for example, if you're playing a song where she has indicated a suggestion of Island strum, the unbracked chords might get one D-du-udu pattern, and a collection of two bracketed chords would each get a D-du, effectively "sharing" one measure.
