Aloha, Patrons!  Calling all current and aspiring ukulele teachers!

I have heard from a number of Patrons and 100 Days of Ukulele participants that 1) several of you are already teaching ukulele in your communities, and 2) there is interest in me teaching a class series on How to Teach Ukulele.  After evaluating and discussing with other teachers how best to share my teaching techniques, I have the sketches of a plan and am looking for feedback from those interested in this kind of course.  Please read below and fill out the Course Interest Form linked below.

My current plan

I have decided to offer a Teacher Coaching Course at the start of 2023.  It will run in parallel with a 6-week online Beginner Ukulele  class.  In essence, I will teach a class of beginners via Zoom, and the teachers-in-training will be asked to observe the class, and potentially help students in breakout rooms as Teaching Assistants, or TAs.  Each week, the teachers-in-training will also attend a follow-up session where I will break down my teaching methods and provide a forum for discussion about class organization and ukulele-teaching techniques.

Additional ideas: Before the first class, we'll hold a mock class to get folks comfortable with the format.  I'd like the TAs to hold a live practice session each week on Zoom, to apply the teaching techniques and get hands-on experience.  I'd like the teachers-in-training to find folks in their real life to teach during the coaching course.  We'll likely create a Slack group for the teachers.

The Coaching Course will be limited in size. The classroom Teaching Assistants will need to have previous teaching experience and a level of on-camera comfort.

Are you interested?

Please fill out this Course Interest Form if you might be interested in taking the class and are generally available in January/February 2023.

And feel free to ask any questions below.  Look forward to hearing from you!

ps I'm also looking for help in the naming conventions (TAs vs teachers-in-training vs coaching vs students etc) so if you have some wisdom there, please share!

Looking forward! You could call your Beginner Uke students the "students" and your teachers in training "teacher trainees" or "trainees" for short and then if you have a group of trainees who are also TAs (teaching assistants) that could make sense as a way to designate that smaller group when you need to. Or if you like "coaches" better than trainees, that could work, too.

May we share this information with others who are not yet patrons?

Kit Bergman

I’m so excited to hear this as I’m teaching my small group of Kinder and 1st grade students. I could definitely use the help!

Kit Bergman

Teachers in training is appropriate!

Jenny Selig

Cynthia gives the ok to share with folks who would be familiar with Cynthia's lessons on YT or ukulele101, so they'll know her method.

Kit Bergman

Can I change my form responses? I put possibly interested and would like to change to interested! If the scheduling works out!

Jenny Selig

If that's all you're changing, I can make that change for you. On which question?

Kit Bergman

It was the one asking if I would be interested in presenting or something like that?

Lynn Corin

Wow. So very interested and have teaching experience but am currently on a very demanding Primary Ed Teacher Training Course.

Cynthia- I am a teacher and have taught teachers. IMO…You are a great teacher. So YES, do this. I think TA is a good name and the way you teach your TA by having them watch and then coach others in the private 1:2 or 3 or 4 break outs is a good plan. Get student feedback and TA feedback of course. I watched you take more control over Patreon lessons and it got better when you did. Nuff said! You curate an excellent disposition among the Patreon’s in 100 days.

thank you, Suzanne! this is great feedback, and would love more input from you as i build this course. ok if i reach out to you in coming weeks?

Suzanne Wu

Of course! I also want to say your idea of signing up for a 6 week class as a beginner is a great idea. My biggest challenge is the habit part. That would have helped me make measurable progress quickly.

Doris Warner

I think it depends on the work they are doing. Are your assistants going to train new content or just support the learning by coaching in smaller groups? From your description they are coaches.

Doris Warner

I also think that you want the coaches to create a safe environment for learning. It may be harder to have credibility with the group if they are thought of as trainees.

What membership level is required for the teach the teacher course?

Jonas

Hi, I am also very interested in this. I am in Portugal and am left handed but I do not believe this will be an issue ... Thanks for all your great work throughout the years

Jenny Selig

Those details haven't been announced yet. It may be that Cynthia will do it on Patreon, or it may be that it will be a separate class/fee. Feel free to fill out the interest form with no obligation, and I'm sure those details will come before too long.

Any timeline as to when this starts? Or has it already started?
