This month's Live Lesson: "Wahine 'Ilikea" by Dennis Kamakahi

Let's review last month's song, "Lahaina Luna" by Kui Lee, at the top of the session (chord charts attached at the bottom of this post).

This month, I'll teach a frequently requested Hawaiian song, especially by hula dancers, "Wahine 'Ilikea" by Dennis Kamakahi.  Please listen to the lovely original version here.  Some of you might recognize the song as the opening track from the U3 In Waves album.  I will teach an arrangement in my key that is more strum-along friendly, because I'm sure folks will want to add this song to their jams and kanikapilas.  I'll also share the fingerpicking variation that we use in the U3 version.

The Hawaiian language can be difficult to grasp at first, so we can walk through some pronunciation basics.  The beautiful melody overrides any language barriers though, and I'm sure you will enjoy this tune.

*After the Lesson: Open Mic - Submit a Video, Share your Progress*

You are invited to practice this song and record a short video to share. This is not a competition - your goal is to do your best, for whatever level you are at.

How to submit:

  • record our lesson song (a verse or short section is fine, doesn't need to be the whole song)
  • upload to your platform of choice (some options: your own YouTube channel, shareable drive like Google or Box or Dropbox, shareable photo album like Google photos or iCloud)
  • post the link to the video in the comments on this post (don't worry if the link doesn't work, I'll copy and paste it)
  • I'll watch as many videos as I can, and I may show your video in class (if you're opposed to this, please say that in the video).
  • one video per person per month

Look forward to seeing your videos!  Over time, it will be cool to track your progress from month to month. This is a new experiment, open to your ideas of how to make the sharing easier.

A note about our monthly Live Lessons

My goal is to teach and arrange a lesson that is interesting for all levels. I will walk through the lesson by starting with beginner-level strumming, and gradually layer on more challenging options for advanced players.

I encourage you to play at your level, and embrace your own pace of incrementally leveling up. You can re-watch the lesson as many times as you like. Grasp the basics on the first go-round, and each time you review, you'll pick up new tips and techniques. You can use this method to become a better student and better learner - by building more awareness and more patience. :)

Here is a list of what we've covered so far in the Live Lessons for 2023:

I look forward to seeing you online!

Thank you but I was looking forward to another more commercial or familiar song.. some of the songs we have done this year have been beautiful I am not a fan of Hawaiian music especially two in a row. 🧡

Pamela Blanchard

I just listened to Wahine 'Ilikea by Dennis Kamakahi It is beautiful and so peaceful. Thank you

Jill Geary

Your U3 album is one that I listen to daily, and this song/track is a favorite. Thanks for making it a teachable lesson!

Tiffeny Velazquez

I think Rock A Hula would be an awesome song to learn. I really enjoy the variation. I'm definitely gonna work on this for the school's talent show.

Cynthia Lin

hi trish! thanks for your comment, what songs would you like to see in upcoming lessons? feel free to share here in the comments, i'll open up the suggestion box for everyone.

Trish Dyball

Here is a few suggestions. My favourite that we have done this year is Songbird. Such a beautiful version and lesson for all I imagine it is hard to choose a song each month suitable for lots of people and for your voice as well. Here are a few song suggestions that I like. Thank you Cynthia. Blue skies Blue Moon I have got you under my skin. Let Her Go by Passenger Perfect Symphony by Andre Bocelli Ed Sheeran. If by Bread. Smile Nat King Cole. Sunny by Bob Hebb. Sway by Buble. 🧡

Melinda Palacio

Cynthia, I would love some feedback on my wahine video thank you

Konstanze

Hi Cynthia, thanks for everything. I wanted to suggest "Copacabana" as a live lesson, with a lot of jazzy chords and a cool strumming pattern .-) That would really be awesome! 😍

Cynthia Lin

hi melinda! you sound lovely, i like the vibrato in your voice. the picking sounds clear, i'd suggest practicing with a metronome so you stay consistent from measure to measure. your hawaiian pronunciation sounds nice as well, just listen to the melody a little more to get more accurate with the notes. i'd love to see another video!

Daniela AE

Hi Cynthia, I know, I'm late, but it took me a while to get this song down. It is so beautiful that I wanted to do it justice and "perform" it. So here is my version: https://youtu.be/WlMWvYOHt9g , looking forward to feedback from you.

I’m late watching this as it’s already November. This song is new to me. It’s beautiful & I’m definitely making an effort to learn the words to it, so I can play along.

Atsuko

Hi there. I took a look at your video. You are doing a great job. Impressive! I've subscribed to your channel. I'll keep it up, too.

Cynthia Lin

daniela!! this is amazing!! you nailed the rhythms and transition from strum to picking, and even added in your own flavor and the key change!! i'd suggest vocally to release the jaw and "round" the vowels a bit more. we can talk about that in the Vocal Workshop. brava!!
