TVD is one of my favorite shows and I love you guys and your reactions, it feels like I’m hanging out with some friends discussing this on a late night with some wine. Another show I recommend is Criminal Minds, (even though it’s a crime show) it’s so entertaining and can be emotional at times. Love you guys and your reactions, the story just gets even better from here🧛🤍

Sophie

The backstory of Damon and Stefan is really interesting. And it made me understand Damons h@te towards his brother

Santiago

Took you guys 13 episodes to get this rush feeling of “I’m hooked” lol I think the first 3-4 seasons of this show are perfectly written to just binge non stop because the twist and the cliff hangers are soooo good. I can’t wait for us to get through the show now lol

SpikesEcho

Exactly, Stefan is literally most responsible for Damon's trust issues and proved him right AGAIN in present day, yet has the nerve to say Damon isn't capable of trust and is the one who lies 🙄 Damon gets his trust betrayed CONSTANTLY

Emily Prentiss

I personally think that Damon feels strongly resentful towards Stefan but doesn’t hate him. If he did hate him I don’t think he’d be helping him all these years, we’ll see more of them together in future episodes. I like how their brotherly bond is still there despite Damon’s “hatred”. Just a big brother protecting his little brother who annoys the shit out of him😭

SpikesEcho

Guys are REALLY clocking Stefan being the "golden child" and Damon being the "scapegoat child" 🤏🤏🤏🤏 But whatever, I'LL at least give him his props for defecting from the Confederacy based on his principles 👏👏👏

Cyndy

Damon is very interesting. I think what motivates him is love in an unhealthy way. He would burn the world for Katherine. He doesn't give a shit about the collateral damage. And that makes him dangerous but kinda sympathetic too.

Cyndy

Absolutely. Stefan gets under his skin. He might "hate" him but he also loves him. They're bonded and that never went away.

Emily Prentiss

It’s so complicated but it also feels so realistic which is why I love this show so much

Sanya Arif

Damon feeding Elena his blood , pretty messed up. He would do it , He's so blinded by Katherine that he doesnt care about anyone else. I dont feel bad for him AT ALL at this point in the series. The first thing he does after being betrayed is try to kill them. And maybe Stefan didnt care about the fact that Damon was with Katherine but Damon is not mad at her at all, only at Stefan , even though she was getting it on with Stefan too. And Stefan didnot actually say that its KAtherine who is a vampire, he may have a hand in the situation escalating but he didnt TELL the dad, can we really term that as betrayal? Its just an unfortunate consequence of Stefan wanting their dad to exercise some compassion.

Julie D

Aw, so glad you guys are having a good experience with the show! It'll continue to pick up speed as it goes on, so stay tuned! I'm glad that you're clocking some of the issues with Stefan, which a lot of fans miss early on. My observation about the Salvatores is that it's Damon's instinct to conceal the best parts of himself and flaunt the worst parts of himself, and it's Stefan's instinct to conceal the worst parts of himself and project the best parts of himself. Neither extreme is who each character actually is, but they're locked so firmly into their "Good Brother" / "Bad Brother" personas that it's hard for them to break out of them.

Karen_Tries

Love that intro saying ! It is perfect!

Kitty Underwood

Yeah people always think this show is nothing but a teen drama, targeted toward teen girls, similar to twilight. And it is those things, but it's not *just* those things and really appeals to a much larger audience than people realize before watching it. It's one of my favorites, and I'm glad y'all are enjoying it as much as you are. Just wait, there's more lol

Shannon Turner

this is such a great analysis of their characters and relationship

While Damon presents a sympathetic figure in these flashbacks, I still find it absolutely WILD that there is so much blame put on Stefan for lying about helping him find the grimoire when we've seen Damon literally KILL multiple innocent people, only 13 episodes into the show. They're not even comparable wrongs. Like, I'm sorry, but I am definitely more sympathetic to a liar than a murderer, hands down, no contest. I mean, why is there not the same indignation from viewers about Damon lying to the town council, who in their perspective, are simply trying to stop their neighbors from getting killed? It's a double standard (yes, there's nuance to consider but it still feels very biased). At this point, Damon has killed several random townspeople (two couples in the woods in the first episodes and Vicki's friends that he drained and burned), he killed Uncle Zach, attacked and then turned Vicki, abused Caroline, killed Lexi, and almost killed Bonnie. And there's still upset about Stefan lying to him in response, in order to prevent more death? Make it make sense. Because I'm not seeing it. And Elena ESPECIALLY has no reason to feel bad about lying after what he did to her best friends Bonnie and Caroline, and even Vicki. I would do the exact same thing if I were in Stefan or Elena's shoes and I wouldn't think twice about it. In the flashbacks, Stefan clearly made a terrible decision, but it was done through naivety and a desire to protect, not through malice. Like he said, he placed his trust in his father, he was hopeful, not scheming. And he didn't even give up Katherine's identity or admit to knowing vampires! He was literally just advocating for a more understanding approach and his father got suspicious and outed him (which is where Stefan's naivety and his own trust in his loved ones becomes the thing that does him in). But the thing that was really telling about Damon's personality and mindset to me, was that very first scene of the episode. Katherine says "And that's how it's done". She is quite literally teaching him how she kills people, teaching him what HE will be doing to others when he's turned. Damon is okay with killing innocent people in order to be with the woman he loves, and while that makes him an interesting and engaging character, it doesn't erase his actions thus far. His willingness to burn the world for her is romanticized and painted as passionate, which is why it's so easy to love him and be charmed by him. I get that. I truly do, because I love watching Damon in this show. He's incredibly entertaining and charismatic. But I can never, ever forget how little he cares for human life when it's not someone he loves himself.

Shannon Turner

nah Stefan is a dumbass for telling his dad. and the betrayal is that Damon made Stefan PROMISE not to tell (because Damon is smarter and saw his dads true colours) and Stefan straight up broke that promise. if my sister told me not to do something, so fervently that she made me promise, I wouldn't do it. and I actually don't think Damon cares that Katherine was with Stefan, he loves her so blindly (where he is the victim in an abusive relationship) and would allow her any concession (common in an abusive relationship)

Shannon Turner

It's not Stefan trying to do the right thing and get some compassion for the vampires that's the problem. Stefan PROMISED Damon, to his damn face, that he wouldn't tell their father. And he broke that. Whether or not Stefan directly sold out Katherine, Damon KNEW what their father was, and Stefan was naive and didn't listen. I would listen to my sister, no matter what I felt was right. Also, you could tell how much it hurt Damon to feed Elena the blood in his body language. The way he slowly let her go almost felt like a small apology. Ian's acting is so subtle, so perfect

Shannon Turner

right?! I mean, I think most of us would have at least one person we would literally destroy everything for, whether it's romantic, a family member or friend. they constantly spit this line that "Damon has no humanity left" but this right here is the MOST human thing

Anne

i wouldnt say hate, resentment at most

Kate Murphy

Love all of this. Damon’s a terrific character, but he’s interesting BECAUSE he is an actual threat to people. His backstory doesn’t exonerate him - it just gives more insight into why he treats human life this way.

Kate Murphy

I love how this episode shows how Katherine is still impacting Damon. The first scene is a parallel to the pilot episode - which started with Damon laying in the road pretending to be hurt to lure victims out of their car. He also targeted Caroline - he found a lonely, desperate young person to feed on, manipulate, and keep around as his confidant. Considering that both of them were essentially groomed by a serial killer, copying her behavior tracks. BUT the show is smart enough to point out that Damon is still choosing to do these things and is still wrong for treating people like toys. He’s still a big threat - just a more compelling and tragic one.

Miss Maya

damn this episode made me feel for Damon in all kind of ways and I hate that 🤣

Sanya Arif

He is a dumbass because he thought he was being discreet, he didn’t actively tell him that it was “Katherine who was a vampire and I was mostly saying the Damon caring about Stefan being with K because Sergio was saying that Stefan didn’t care about Damon and that he liked K

Love10 ❤️

Lowkey is Stefan a hypocrite lolb

Astoria

I felt so sorry for Damon during that scene in the kitchen between him and Elena. You can see that he wants to trust Stefan, that he wants his brother to be a part of his life, and yet he knows something’s not quite right. He asked Elena quite openly and honestly, looked her in the eye and asked again, and what happened? Both of them lied to his face. When you consider that things have been like this between Stefan and Damon for well over 100 years, it’s no wonder Damon’s such a wanker towards Stefan.

Kimberly S. (Rawr)

So thrilled you’re loving the show! Love the new episode intro saying! “If I see something I haven’t seen before, I’ll throw a dollar at it.” Damon honestly has the funniest lines 😂 I really liked these flashback scenes with Katherine & the brothers. You get to see more layers and dimension of the characters & their relationships. Katherine was MESSY stringing both brothers along. The Anna reveal! I had no idea that James Remar played their father! That’s so cool. Oop Stefan outing himself as a vampire to Alaric was crazy. Not Anna taking the journal. I loved the dynamic of Damon at family night at Elena’s. Anna & Damon choking each other before tapping out was funny. Oof that turn of events with Damon catching them having lied about helping him & him feeding Elena his blood & threatening to turn her to Bonnie & Elena getting kidnapped was wild. I can see both sides of Damon & Stefan’s mindsets back in the day with their father & the vampire dilemma. I do think Stefan meant well by trying to talk to their father but Damon knew better. It’s sad that ultimately that’s what broke the trust between them after being so close. And on top of that you throw in the intense feelings of love & daddy issues & decades of time stewing on it you can understand Damon’s feelings. And every time he trusts Stefan he seems to break that trust. And on the other hand when Damon starts feeling those intense emotions he tends to lash out & cause as much damage as he can which Stefan feels responsible for. The way their relationship is portrayed & evolving is so interesting to see unfold. Absolutely love your thoughts & theories 🖤

orangeflavor

Completely agree. And giving us glimpses of the past like this do exactly that, they give us more insight into who he is. He's a three-dimensional character with struggles and shortcomings, like any other person. That's why his character works so well and is so fun to watch. I guess I just wish there weren't so many allowances for his behavior when we see his blatant disregard for human life if it's not in his own interest to preserve it.

meg thomas

imma speak for us all and say on top of true blood and TVD, we need y'all to react to mtv's Teen Wolf cause its fucking great and everything y'all love

MabyyB

Still funny to me that Nina and Ian were dating for the first 3 season 😂

KatieBee

What Cody said at the end about feeling ambivalent toward the show like oh it is probably just another drama... That's exactly how I felt about True Blood and I'm loving watching it for the first time alongside you guys. And enjoying it so much. The commenters really give y'all great recommendations, I agree! It's kind of funny that Bonnie and Elena were kidnapped on the same night by people working together. Bestiesssss 😂

Jbug

love this episode

Kate Murphy

100%. I’m always surprised when reactors start disregarding that so early.

courtney 🧚🏽‍♀️

it’s extremely toxic and like you said dangerous. to be that selfish and self centered and not care about anyone else bc of one person is crazy smh

Trinity Bernhardt

I probably wouldn't care so much about Stefan lying to Damon so much, if it wasn't a continuation of how often he lied to Elena. It is more his hypocrisy than who it is pointed at. Stefan uses Damon's actions to cover his own flaws. It more lowers Stefan in my eyes than lifts Damon. I love the characters, but I think they both have major issues, and neither are healthy.

Trinity Bernhardt

The Confederate vampire is such a trope, but it is interesting to have one who defected before they died.

orangeflavor

Oh, most definitely. Stefan has SUCH issues with control, likely because he's lived a life so devoid of it, even when he tried his damnedest to maintain it. And of course that then bleeds into his relationships (both familial and romantic). His coping mechanism becomes his downfall, and his very large, very blatant red flag, lol. This show really is just a bunch of hurt people inflicting their own trauma responses upon everybody else, and it is so messy and so dramatic and we absolutely lap it up, lol. I love that I can be so critical of this show and its characters, and still have it mean so much to me. I guess it's just the humanity of it. We are not simple or clean beings, after all.

Meredith

Even as a human Damon was okay with Katherine killing people and helping her. He definitely makes for an interesting character.

RunAwayCloak

Kathrine was mind raping Stefen fuck her and Damon. There was nothing that he betrayed and I don’t get how people are saying that he betrayed Damon. He didn’t give two fcks that Kathrine was mind raping his brother bc he was so in love with a women. You people are fcking weird for defending Damon for these actions he’s the best character in the show but he also is a piece of shit.

RunAwayCloak

Why are we defending Kathrine who was mind raping Stefen and why are we blaming the dad for wanting to get rid of fcking vampires that are all mass murders. You Damon defenders are so fcking weird. Damon knew his brother was getting mind raped and he didn’t thinks maybe I should tell my brother that his love for her isn’t real.

SpikesEcho

Hey lil guy 👋 you ok? Facts are facts. Katherine abused both of them, fucking Damon up worse than Stefan if you insist on weighing abuse (but that's pretty gross of you). That's canon and provable if you know the later seasons. Saying Damon didn't care what Katherine was doing to Stefan is laughably unintelligent, as Katherine was lying and manipulating both, including over the details of her relationships with the other brother/what she was doing with each (as we SEE in multiple scenes) and her control included compelling Damon when convenient (as we SEE). Stefan indeed betrayed Damon three times in a row (maybe even four times) before they parted ways in 1864. And you can only blame one of those times on Katherine's hold on him. So CRY HARDER

Liv Pasquarelli

there have been many times in my life where i knew my parents would react horribly to something and my siblings still insisted on talking to them about it, and then would act shocked when they acted exactly as i predicted. this was likely because i was the sibling who was adultified and had to take care of myself and the younger ones. regardless, it would drive me insane when i told my siblings not to make it hot and they immediately went and did it anyway. so this storyline always made me sympathetic towards damien. also the “golden child” in a family system always assumes they’ll get away with things since that’s usually their experience, and Stefan is definitely the golden child out of the two.

Misty_Dawn

Ohh! I love “put on your daylight rings, it’s time to get messy”! That’s perfect! 🥰🙌🏼

Cherali2

I mean Stefan killed too. I wonder if in the ripper era til now, Stefan hasn't kill more people than Damon

Vulpix

Girl these are major spoilers, delete your comment please

Vulpix

I am unashamedly a Damon apologist. I love him and all his complexity. He absolutely killed those people and he looked hot while doing it. But he’s also sad!

Leolie Laida

you know what I think? Its because Damon is sooo upfront about what he is and does. From the moment we saw him it was made very clear that he kills people, has a secret agenda, is impulsive and does not care a lot about "being good". If he does something bad, we expect it, we are not surprised. But Stefan has always been presented as "the good brother", so learning about his flaws, which are mainly his shame, control-problems and tendency to be untruthful, are sort of more present, they stand out more in comparison to Damons flaws. As opposed to the brothers strengths, Stefans (being his empathy, kindness and protectiveness, while being very reliable) are traits we are used to seeing from him, but Damons strengths being his unflinching integrity and loyalty are more difficult to see behind the wall of witty oneliners, nonchalance and double meanings. Could be an unpopular opinion, but I think from a psychological perspective, Stefan might actually be even more complex then Damon. I like both of them a lot for very different reasons and I think the writers did an amazing job with the brothers

Leolie Laida

Yeah okay, if it hurt him so much why did he do it then? And I'm sorry but of course Stefan tried to do the right thing. If I had to choose if I trust my father or my brother more, I'd have no idea what to do. A seventeen year old boy in a desperate situation hoping for his fathers help is not a bad thing. He was probably all messed up in the head from being compelled and repeatedly bitten by Katherine. Of course it was a little naive, but he never actually told him about anything. He just didn't know that he accidentally put his father on Katherines trail. I can't really fault him for that at all.

Shannon Turner

People do things that hurt themselves all the time. And doing the "right thing" isn't of consequence to this discussion, that was the first thing I said. Thank you for your opinion though

Halima

CLOCK! Fucking hell you cooked!!

Halima

I think the actors ages often affects how people perceive Damon and Stefan’s relationship and the events shown in this episode. Damon was a 25 year old man, while Stefan was a 17 year old kid. I get that Damon was hurt because Stefan indirectly led to Katherine getting captured, but to blame your little brother for something like that is crazy. Even more so after nearly 150 years.

Leolie Laida

yeah I get it, but I feel like Damon should not receive any compassion for what he did to Elena here. He deserves empathy for many other things but not for this, its so violating in the most disgusting way.

Shannon Turner

Didn't say I had compassion, was just commenting on Ian's acting

Zurina Santiago

Stefan has a past that will be uncovered. Especially about his mistakes and killings. We have to remember throughout this show, many more mistakes will be made with both brothers. To compare one or the other based on how many people they hurt or kill will be tough. Both of the characters hold weight in the disruption and chaos that is brought to mystic falls. I say this not to defend one or the other. I genuinely love both brothers. I feel this show does justice with the character development!

Courtney Fulton

3:35, I used to consider Never Say Never by The Fray the Vampire Diaries theme song. Or really anything by The Fray during that time period really reminded me of TVD. ❤️

B-dad

I’ve been binge watching these but I just thought of something. Logan fell said he lived alone but after he died and came back he couldn’t go home! YES HE COULD! If he was the only living occupant and he’s dead…no invite needed right? So was this just an early mistake by the team or is there a twist I’ve forgotten???

janeelmonae

It’s Stefan’s hypocrisy that’s the real issue…

Alicia jones

I agree with you. But Katherine is the most responsible in all of this and I blame her for hurting and using them both.

Wanitta D Belleh

My biggest issue with Stefan similar with Bill in (true blood) is the hypocrisy of it all and their moral high horse like they're better than their brother/friend/counter part, when in reality they're just as bad and sometimes if not worse.

Caroline

Lets not forget that Damon chose Katherine over his own brother too. He knew what Katherine was doing to them both! His brother was being abused by this woman but Damon didn't care because he wanted her and that was all that mattered. Then he hated his own brother for Katherines choices. Stefan didn't have a choice at all and the person who should have protected him, didn't. Stefan's lying to Elena is bad obviously but he never did it to be mean, he only lied to protect. Does that make it okey, no of course not! But there is a difference when its to protect and when its for selfish reasons. Katherine lies because she is selfish and Stefan lied to protect. Damon is also selfish. Him and Katherine fit together to be honest. Both very selfish people and Stefan was a victim between them.

Caroline

Thats not true tho! Damon always knew what Katherine was doing to Stefan. She wanted them both and he knew it. She would go to the ball or whatever with Stefan, in front of Damon. Acting like he wasn't aware when one of the reasons Damon hates Stefan is because Katherine wanted them both not just Damon. The difference here is that Stefan was compelled, Damon was not. Damon had a responsibility to protect his own brother but chose not too. What Katherine did to both of them is awful but Damon knowing what she was doing and choosing not to protect his brother is just as awful. He knew what she was and what she did, he didn't care about all the people she was hurting. Stefan is not responsible for Damons trust issues! Stefan was a child and Damon was a grown adult! Stefan made a childish mistake and Damon hated him before the mistake even happened. He just uses it as an excuse to still be mad at Stefan all these years laters. Its pretty pathetic if you think about it.

SpikesEcho

Um, wrong 😂 idk why some of you fans think this so strongly. Stefan literally STATES how she kept them both in the dark about what was happening with the other. They knew there was something but had no idea the details or extent. And you're wrong AGAIN because we also have a scene of Damon being compelled by Katherine when convenient. The difference YOU'RE missing is that although Stefan got it easy, Damon was unfortunately severely psychologically manipulated and isolated by Katherine. She destroyed everything he was, preyed on his vulnerability in the family, and groomed him. Damon went from "sweet and innocent to a fault" and from someone devastated and traumatized by taking human life, to someone ok with taking human life. And the one person in his life he had who loved him (Stefan), she separated him from. It's wild the way you guys ignore all that and write your own narrative for both Damon and Stefan when it comes to Katherine.

MelaninKy

People are forgetting that Stefan was 17 and Damon is 25. Thats a big age gap
