We are finally here and watching this one. We felt like we might like but did not expect to completely LOVE it. We totally get the hype and we are already talking in depth about all the characters. Plus it's super freaking hot 🥵 Our vapors were vaping and led one thing to another after we watched 😂 jkjk...maybe.

Thought I'd share that Shane's character is autistic! This is never explicitly stated in the book or show, but it is important to understanding his character. The author Rachel Reid, the director and creator of the show Jacob Tierney, and Shane's actor Hudson Williams have all confirmed that that was an intentional character choice for the character. The only reason it's unacknowledged within the story itself is because Shane is undiagnosed. Hudson took a lot of inspiration for his performance from his own autistic father. Going forward you might notice some of these traits in Shane like the flat affect on his voice, the way he struggles to make eye contact sometimes, the way he struggles with processing his emotions, sometimes not reading the room or responding too literally, his attachment to routine and rules (like how he folds his clothes), etc.

Also, just read there caption. &&honestly the intimacy coordinator for this deserves every award known to man for this. It's INSANE. I've never seen scenes be so "sexy" in my life. I dont think it matters if your a straight, gay, ghoul or in-between those scenes will be getting you. Honestly the hub should take notes. The first time I watched this i actually skipped all the sx scenes cuz I am a mom Lol I didnt want my kids to wake up and walk in and think I was watching anything like that. Lol. It was still by far the best show id watched all year. Then I watched reactions on YouTube and theyre mostly cut out. cody you have GOT to listen to these books. this is definitely a close adaptation and hit a lot of exact stuff from the books, but the books just add so much more and some things slightly differ. i read all 6 books in 2 days, just waiting on book 7 next year😭 i am so excited to see y’all watch this series! definitely some of my fave reactors and def the only ones i pay on patreon for so i can see EVERYTHING🤣 hudson and connor really outdid themselves playing these characters. i think more shows and movies should take a risk on these unknown actors it seems to be paying off lately! definitely a beautiful show with a beautiful story.

I'm so excited to watch this with you guys! It's such a beautiful season of TV, it's a piece of art, really. Acting, cinematography, writing, direction... just perfection. Watching these early moments of meeting and getting to know each other is so sweet and intimate, the little jokes and moments of discomfort that are overcome. They portray it so well. I'm so glad you brought up the sports homophobia of the time and understood why they had to be so cautious. I've seen so many reactions not understand and get annoyed at the characters from hiding etc. It's even worse for a Russian; it can actually be a death sentence, especially for someone of renown, even now.

I loooved that MM romance (it was my first dip into the genre, and it got me hooked!), and if you like dark mm romance then I also recommend the Vile House series…. But only if you like dark stuff, so I’d read the trigger warnings with those, even though they end up being super sweet underneath the darkness! 💕

Yaaaaay, SO SO excited for your reactions to this show! Loved this first reaction so much, and I'm so glad you're loving it so far! A couple things: 1) When Hayden invited Shane to dinner, he referred to his wife as a WAG--this is an acronym used by professional athletes meaning "Wives and Girlfriends." 2) Regarding the pressure on Ilya: also keep in mind that it's literally illegal to be gay in Russia, so this creates a lot more risk for Ilya than for Shane. There are (even in 2026) zero out professional hockey players, and it's notoriously one of the most homophobic sports ever, so if Ilya were outed, he's at real risk of being kicked off his team or having no one re-sign him when his contract expires, which means he'd be deported back to Russia, where he would almost certainly be jailed or killed. 3) Despite the above, you're also correct that Ilya is a lot more comfortable with his sexuality than Shane is--we see a lot of their thoughts in the books, and Shane has a lot more internalized homophobia than Ilya does. Shane also obviously feels a lot of pressure to be the perfect, model hockey player, and he knows that a lot of hockey fans would have a big problem with gay players, so it's hard for him to square his desires with the expectations he's trying to live up to. Heated Rivalry Audio Books - the Game Changer series as Audio Books - Book 2 Heated Rivalry the audio book version is great. Book 1 Game Changer though, one of the choices for one of the voices given to a character by the narrator is ... a choice that kinda ruins any atmosphere the writing is trying to create, like fully removes the listener out of the narrative. so i strongly recommend doing book 1 as a traditional book.

Yay! I've been looking forward to this so much. I'm glad you guys get that this is more than just sex. You can tell with the way they are with each other that there's a real connection there. I'm not sure at this point if even the characters are aware of it, they think they're just hooking up. But every time they're together, they're building something that's a lot more. Yes, both Shane and Ilya are under lots of pressure. Shane has a lot of pressure from his mom, but it does come from a place of love with her. For example, notice she doesn't call him when he loses a game and berate him over it. It's more like she wants him to get everything out of hockey that he can and for him to be someone to look up to. It's a lot to live up to though, for sure. With Ilya it's different unfortunately. His father demands perfection, but it's not very loving. And his brother just abuses him and uses him for money. And neither of them are "out", but for Ilya, I don't think he feels any personal shame about his sexuality. Whereas for Shane, you do get the sense that he feels some kind of shame about it at this point.

Oh one more thing: people are always saying this show is so graphic, but honestly, it's less graphic than a lot of other shows--I'd argue that True Blood is more graphic than Heated Rivalry is; there's just as much graphic sex with even more nudity on TB, and sometimes characters are covered in blood during those sex scenes. Heated Rivalry just feels more graphic to people because it's two guys and it's more unusual to see M/M sex scenes on TV. Queer as Folk US was also doing more graphic content than Heated Rivalry 25 years ago, it was just less popular with mainstream audiences. Also--SUPER excited to hear you're expanding the scope of your channel! I think this will be really, really welcomed by your viewers! Excited to see what's next!

Also I did some research and wanted to clarify that for Ilya- being gay in Russia is very different as any sort of LGBTQ expression is considered "propaganda" and "extreme activism." So when he talks about going home there's that element as well! It risks imprisonment, heavy fines, etc let alone completelu being outcast from families and social circles. A bit more extreme than the US (despite it not necessarily being an easy existence here either for the time period)

So, this is the best option, IMO. So far, it looks like the show is doing a really dedicated job and it's really captivating.

Luke Prokop came out in 2021 and (quoting Wikipedia here) was "the first player under contract with an NHL team to do so." That being said pretty sure he never actually played any NHL games and has been in the AHL and ECHL ever since. I still think he deserves the recognition tho.

A friend recommended The Devils of Vitality series (by Chani Lynn Feener) so I started with those.... and even though I was taken a back a little at the list of trigger warnings in the authors notes at the start of the book, I was hooked right away!!lolol I was so into them I breezed through all 8 books in no time flat! 🤣🤣 I was so into them I immediately started another dark MM rom 😂😂 (Immersed by Gale Ian Tate). You're two of my favourite reactors (I watch and LOVE your SPN reactions!!) but I figured you wouldn't be reacting to this show because it isn't horror based. But I'm SO excited that you guys are expanding into other genres!!! You're both so insightful and intelligent about character and plot arc, you understand film language and you're both so extremely media literate! Which unfortunately isn't always the case with reactors, especially with this show. You also both seem to be experts on commenting during the show, but still being able to pay attention and miss very little. Which is truly an art form. Anyway, suffice it to say I am SAT for these reactions! I can't wait for more!! P.S Oh, and I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned it, but WAG isn't anything derogatory. It just stands for "wives and girlfriends" and it's an acronym used in a lot of different sports. P.P.S Lol! Also, you may have already been told this too, but as of today, in 2026, there is still not a single out hockey player in the NHL. There is one out gay man playing in the AHL (the league one level down from the NHL) but that's it. It's really heartbreaking. But this show is making a lot of positive change! Love this. I'm glad I keep searching for new Heated Rivalry stuff so I can keep running into fun things like this. I love that you are smart enough to notice things everyone should notice, but the fact that you are gay will give you a bit of a different perspective. It's clear that you are going to get more out of this show than some others since it's clear you are noticing details others miss. I mean, it's an obvious one, but their nicknames in the phones is something too many miss. You got the sub/dom thing immediately. You noticed the music and the way the show looks. It is doing the romance thing, but it's taking it seriously. It does some of the silly romance things, like the feet shots, but it's done in a way that's not stupid. If you were tearing up at this episode, can't wait for the rest. Most of them are good tears, in the end. Off to watch #2. Great job you two.

The intentional choice to not use music in the sex scenes in ep 1 and to show the full scene—none of that bad romance genre gauzy focus, sappy music, sheet covered tease and then cut away to the afterwards—is so innovative for romance genre series in general and especially for Queer romance. It also is honest not to follow the stupid “wait til episode 5 before they hook up” lie. A LOT of relationships in general and definitely a lot of Queer relationships (especially closeted ones) start with physical intimacy and the rest builds or doesn’t from there. It’s great that the show refuses to play into Purity Culture bullshit and homophobic stigmas that say showing men kissing is more racy than when it’s a cishet couple. Refusing to adhere to the traditional Romance Genre rules and tropes is a smart and necessary adaptation for the screen that needed to happen.

OMG I HAVE BEEN BEGGING FOR THIS since like FEBRUARY!!! And I was on a cruise when these eps first dropped! Now I can reheat with Sergio and Cody while I do the mountain of laundry. Also, Cody, you've probably already been told not to listen to the HR audiobooks because the narrator for Ilya is horrible and will ruin it for you...but Rachel Reid has two other hockey romances outside the GCU (Game Changers Universe) that are fantastic and one, Time to Shine, has GREAT narration, and excellent characters you'll fall in love with. And...if I just quietly tell myself that the Calgary Outlaws, and Landon and Casey (the couple in Time to Shine), maybe sometimes DO play against The Metros, The Raiders, or The Admirals...that's my business, right? Why can't they all be part of the GCU? And, Sergio, I SEE YOU DANCING- the music in this show is top tier, songs like "C'est Toi" and "Mangetout" haven't left my playlists since winter.

If you're a dark romance fan, might I suggest the Hunter's Heart series, by Rose Bitterly? It's like if you thought Viggo Mortensen was super hot in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, and then someone wrote a whole book like that (but more).

I recommended it in my comment about this but RR's OTHER, non-Game Changers books, Time to Shine, and The Shots You Take, are really good- and the narration for Time to Shine is EXCELLENT. One of the best I've heard in recent memory. His voices for Casey and Landon are perfection.

While I’m glad so many people can relate to it I don’t see why it couldn’t have been diagnosed. That’s the easiest thing to slip in to a storyline. In doesn’t need a whole chapter even. Also there are plenty of awkward people who also happen to be hot lol. His autism doesn’t really stand out to me not like something else Shane goes through in the 2nd book. Now THAT needs to be explored deeply in season 2

In the book it’s obviously bc Rachel didn’t INITIALLY intend for Shane to be autistic, but for the show Jacob knew about Shane’s autism already and that was a factor going into the script and Shane’s onscreen characterization. And I think the idea is that they didn’t want to make his autism the focus or have it take over some of the other issues Shane’s going through, in addition to it kinda being out of character for Shane to seek diagnosis. But who knows? There’s been a LOT of praise of how they brought Shane’s autism to screen and they might decide to go down that route in the show. But I also hope they explore that other issue in Season 2 deeply!

We use the term in the UK too for footballers' wives and girlfriends (WAGs). I guess she wants to be the first of the partners of the teammates to coax Shane round for dinner 😊

If you haven't already seen them, I highly recommend looking up interviews with their intimacy coordinator. She's fabulous, along with the guys being super comfortable with each other. Jacob also gave advice from his experience. Connor and Hudson developed physical cues to time movement/ reactions.
