The title alone had us cracking up! Interesting take on Magicians and Dark Magic. As usual the episode really does well when it connects back to the boys! Can't wait to get to the second half to season so No Spoilers See below:

Sam& Ruby's conversation in the motel is a callback to 4x10 when she mentions what Sam needs to do to stengthen his psychic powers but he told her that he doesn't wanna do whatever it is AGAIN implying he's done it before

yomvanhaver

These 2 episodes are my least favorite of the season… especially following the great I Remember What You Did and Heaven and Hell. Hard to top those 😅

deanandsamAO3

Sam looks so good in his brown hoodie. :)

Cass&Jason

I have so many thoughts and feelings about this episode. But for the sake of spoilers (and not just about this season) I will refrain. For now. I'm sure that when the time is right, I'll have plenty to say. 😆

Claire Dactyl

I have always took the fact that the older guys knew about Chief and how to send Dean to an underground leather club as a pretty clear sign that at least one of them was queer, if not all three of them 👀

ClaryTehSage

I actually love this episode, mostly for Barry Bostwick. I performed in two different Rocky Horror shadow casts, and met him at Dragoncon, he was just roaming the selling booths.

Megan

I like this episode but the previous, yeah. Inbred feels like a s1 episode and doesn't fit with the new angel direction. This episode reminds me of the kind of campy-witchy type episodes we get each season. I just like when we see people dropping (sans monster attack) then figuring out the why/how as it happens in real time. Like in s1 with the church wife controlling a reaper or the immortal guy last season. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch this one, but I don't skip it. Last episode, I always skip.

Wham8

Am I dumb? Did we learn who Chriss Angel is/was? I searched all the Supernatural fan pages. Maybe I missed it.

CALM

Criss Angel is a real guy! He was a somewhat tv famous magician at the time (who inspired the younger magician here I believe). I heard recently in an interview (in the SPN Then and Now podcast) that Kripke fought with the legal team at CW to be able to name the episode like that because he thought it was hilarious and also because if Criss Angel sued them for defamation, it would mean the guy would have to prove he's not a douchebag, which is impossible ><

LeslieW

Although there are funny parts (all hail cheif) I just find this episode incredibly sad. Aging is one thing we all got coming... if we're lucky.

Ebony

Off topic, but Jared’s shoulders this season should be registered as a weapon.

Stacey H

Another great reaction. Not one of my favorite eps but I always love the Sam and Dean of it all. Even if there isn’t a lot with season’s main story they still touch on it.

I'm going to take this moment to suggest you guys consider watching The Magicians if you haven't seen it.. It has everything- horror, comedy, fantasy, queer representation.. Imagine if Harry Potter didn't find out he was a wizard until grad school, he's also clinically depressed, and he finds Narnia.

Michele

I don't like this episode very much. A big part of it is because I've never like magician stuff. I seriously don't like Chris Angel. I don't know why I am so hard against people claiming to be magicians. I know that I don't like how much work they put into acting as if it's real when everyone knows it's not. ugh It's not so bad when they use the term Illusionist. That's more realistic to me. I know. It's a weak argument. I don't know. lol Anyway, the one interesting part of it was when Ruby showed up. That got my interest. What's going on there? I was confused the first time watching this. I didn't realize that Sam had stepped away from working with Ruby. What was going on there? And what's going on with the Seals? We've not had an episode on that topic in a while.

Supernatural was supposed to be ended in 5 season. so yeah it's kinda feel gonna be the end

pamysue

Getting old isn't all that horrible. I mean, yea, I wish it was still the 70s all the time but there is a calmness that I have found. You don't give so much a shit what others think. Family time is something there's never too much of. Grandkids are so much more fun than kids. And I get to come online and see people I wouldn't IRL and so many of the young people now give me hope for our world. ✌️💖

L

i like the bummer episodes haha and i def think the old guy was in the closet

Alex Montrose

Peaches and plums muthaf*ckah is still one of the ways I greet my boyfriend whenever we've been apart for a few days!

Alex Montrose

Fun fact. Old and young Charlie are played by a real-life father and son.

KatieBee

The boys getting outwitted and outplayed by the magicians, especially Dean who underestimates them, always sends me.

Megan

I honestly think they were alluding to the two main guys as being partners (and all 3 queer). At the very least, I think Charlie was in love with the other guy (can't remember his name) since his actions felt deeper than just protecting his friend. But I'm choosing to believe they were a couple.

Cass&Jason

Fun fact, Barry Bostwick voiced the boys' (maternal) grandfather on Phineas and Ferb. Their grandmother (and mother) was voiced by Caroline Rhea, aka Hilda from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Their father was voiced by Richard O'Brien, another RHPC alum (Riff Raff). Tim Curry made a couple of cameos in the show, too. Once as an evil scientist and another as a butler, go figure. 😆 It was a cute little show. I think they brought it back, but we haven't watched it yet.

Elisia

this season is so complicated for comments! It really needs two watches to fully appreciate it lol A first time watch, and then a second time, when you know where they are going lol

Cassie

With the rolled up sleeves in the first Ruby scene.. phew 🙇‍♀️

Cassie

Young Charlie reminds me so much of Warren from Buffy, in looks and the way he speaks

Jay

I don’t get how Sam thinks killing Lilith would end the job of hunting. Even if killing Lilith stops all the demon and angel drama forever, there would still be ghosts and witches and shapeshifters and other monsters to hunt. Obviously the brothers could quit hunting if they wanted, but would they really be able to stop when they know what is out there hurting people?

Jay

Plus, it might be hard to go back to law school or whatever normal life Sam is imagining when he and his brother are possibly still technically wanted for murder?

Rory

omg yes! I feel like they would love the Eliot and Margo dynamic/relationship

Anthony

Damn season 4 is so good, just about every episode is top tier! Love the camera work as the magician gets out of the ropes ! What a great episode with another sad ending! Sergio on Sam and Ruby “he feels her around.” On and off screen! Lmao

Jenny D

Was not expecting a Stacie Orrico shout out 🤣🩷

Melanie Vaudrin

So I'm behaving and writing this from the perspective of not knowing what comes only what had happened (I also haven't seen this season since it aired so I have forgotten a LOT). When it comes to Sam and that scene where she's talking to him about how it's going to get worse and many will die my only thoughts were wait, but she's a demon. How can he just trust she doesn't want it to get worse and actually wants to help make things better, she's a demon! Whether she's against Lilith or not, she's always going to be on the side of Hell because she's bound to it, so why trust her?

Liz Nichols

There's definitely fanfiction out there where Dean went through with the session with "chief"

Cindy

I couldn't even started s5 after what happened. 😭 I never recovered from it

I always wanted to ask Eric Kripke what Criss Angel ever did to him LOL. || This was another heartbreaker of an episode for sure! Poor Jay! I felt so badly for him, especially when the jackass was giving him a bad time in the bar (in the beginning) - I can’t stand a bully. || It was so cool that show got Barry Bostick to play Jay. He’s a fairly big deal in the “character acting” realm, and yes, he was in ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’

shuff!

This episode mostly sits in my memory as “Barry Bostwick magician episode with the silly name,” so I always forget how serious it gets at point. Props to this show for refusing to wrap everything up at the end of every episode when it would feel trite to do so. Jay does the right thing here, but doing the right thing sometimes involves sacrifice, and occasionally regret. Him telling the bartender to throw away his cards at the end is simply tragic. I also think this episode does a good job of establishing the different ways that Sam and Dean see hunting. Sam works with Dean to save people along the way, but I’d argue that deep down, he’s doing this to achieve specific goals (killing Azazel, killing Lilith), whereas Dean sees the job as a never ending fight against evil in all its forms. If everything had come to an end when they managed to kill Azazel at the end of season two, I have no doubt that Sam would have at least tried to go back to a normal life, whereas Dean would never have considered it. It’s why Sam can envision a world when all of this (“this” meaning their lives as hunters) is over, and Dean is certain that he’ll be a hunter until he dies.

Chris Freas

Finally here!!! I have followed y'all on YouTube for a long time now and had the free patrion membership but had to get the paid one between Supernatural and now True Blood lol. Gotta see the full videos

Oleksandra Yakubenko

40:46 just noticed that this such clever set up for a main storyline decision-making of season 5

Oleksandra Yakubenko

He could sue for defamation he wouldn't need to prove he is not douchebag, it falls under character assassination, he could prove that this has damage to his public name and he can lost income because of it

Kammy

A fun fact from the SPN then & now podcast, the legal big wigs were against this episode title because they thought Criss Angel would sue or bring legal action and they stick to their guns wanting this title and their argument was basically that Criss Angel would have to present a case to the court proving that he isn’t a douche bag to follow through with a case lol

Kammy

For a great older gay love story, I recommend the show Grace & Frankie, it’s very enjoyable!

Kimberly S. (Rawr)

I never knew there was so much pettiness in the magician realm, according to this show anyways 😂 They should’ve had a counter for every time they said douchebag in this episode. Not them setting Dean up with Chief 😂 Ruby dropping that 34 seals have already been broken was crazy. Jay escaping the rope the boys tied him up with was so funny. The magicians constantly slipping the boys & getting one over on them was hilarious. The twist reveal was pretty cool. Very sad & heartbreaking ending with Jay. Not Sam keeping more secrets from Dean 🤦🏽‍♀️ These boys just love keeping secrets from each other. This episode had some fun comedic moments but the story of the magicians getting aged out of the industry & wanting to turn back the clock even at such a high cost was tragic. I liked how the brothers saw parts of themselves in the magicians. Appreciate your breakdown & reaction 🖤

First Question

From what I’ve heard, Criss Angel is a sexual predator, and an abuser who just choked out one of his fans, so…yeah. Title fits.

First Question

The acting in this episode was absolutely tremendous!

First Question

I had noticed how uncannily similar they looked and sounded. I love cool facts like these! Thanks for sharing!

rickie woodson

pamysue

Well you expressed it perfectly and thank you for such a kind reply. It's always fun to find a good group of people to enjoy a favorite show or movie with. I enjoy reading other people's thoughts. They often give me a new look at episodes I've watched several times. The people here are the best✌️💖
