You’ve probably had commenters on YT explaining that Shane is on the spectrum according to the author Rachel Reid and Hudson used that in his portrayal. Because of this, Ilya’s Slavic indifference flirting does not connect with Shane’s neurodivergent anxiety-ness. They just do not understand how to communicate effectively.

I absolutely loved your reaction to this episode. Couple of points: 1. The remix of All The Things She Said is by Harrison... it is on Spotify, etc. 2. Ilya went back to his hotel by himself. 3. In the club when Miles waves at Ilya by the bar, Ilya turns away because he recognizes Miles as Rose's costar/best friend and assumes Rose and Shane must also be there. So he starts scanning for Shane. Shane in turn recognized Ilya's team mates and looks around for Ilya. Man, oh man, I CAN'T WAIT for your reaction to the final 2 episodes!!!!!!! Fun fact: Connor and Hudson actually developed like their own little language for their sex scenes. Like if Connor tapped Hudson a certain way it meant Ilya was inside Shane, so Hudson would act accordingly. Their intimacy coordinator said they were a dream to work with because their bond and trust with one another allowed them to really give the scenes their all (without actually having sex).

Ahhh the wait for Ep 5 and 6 begins! Loved your reaction to the most iconic club scene of all time + that you picked up on the intimacy of that couch scene immediately. Guys I know we have to wait but pleeeeeeease don't make us wait til next Monday for the last 2 eps, I've never wanted anything more than those last 2 from you 😂🙏 I was waiting for you guys to see the amazing cut from Ilya knocking Shane into the boards and it cuts to them going at it 😂 and then cuts back, that one kills me and I love the reactions to it! The spit in the hand part drives me wild lmao that part makes me blush so much and Sergio's reaction didn't disappoint haha. I swear Connor and Hudson's kisses have ruined all other on screen kisses for me forever, so many actors\actresses hold back and barely give anything when kissing, but theirs actually feel so real and so so so intimate I feel for my boy Ilya though because even though he didn't go about it the right way, he was trying to see if Shane was bi too or what his sexuality is. He also initiated the intimacy of staying over, making food, cuddling on the couch. But as it goes with them, their way of communicating is sex so Shane takes it sexual on the couch and they fall back into their comfort. Their sex is so important in the show, it tells so much of the story and I love how it's done. And then Ilya says he never hears about Shane with girls and Shane's like yeah well it's private, then leaves Ilya after it gets too intimate and immediately is seen dating a movie star lol, what a fucking punch to the gut that would be. They both suck at communicating, my poor boys. Ughhhh the club part is so devastating and so well done, Shane's staring at Ilya and as Ilya stares back the lyrics to "being with you has opened my eyes" THE PAIN UGHHHH. And "this is not enough" as Ilya is by himself in the shower and Shane is having sex with Rose 😅 I haven't watched yellowjackets but this show gave me a huge crush on Sophie Nelisse so I'm sure I'll get to yellowjackets eventually!

Horror is not my thing, but I’ve been obsessed with Heated Rivalry since ep 1 and 2 came out in November. I watch every reactor that I come across, at least until I think they are terrible. Again, love how you guys pick up on the little details that mean so much. Our boys definitely have some communication issues but they are doing the best they can, all things considered. Poor Ilya trying to hint at whether Shane likes girls too and it sailing right over Shane's head. Both of them wanting so much more from one another but so certain it's impossible. This show breaks my heart and heals it over and over and over.

I think you guys missed the progression. Ilya is NOT going out there partying every night. The montage at the beginning showed him going from, partying and drinking and hooking up with women to leaning on a table texting Shane IN A CLUB, and turning down other people. Ilya was TRYING to have something more with Shane. That's why he invited him to hus house, asked him to stay, made him food, had his favourite drink, and telling him about his best friend, ie, coming clean about his past. He wasn't trying to make Shane feel bad. Remember English is not his first language and culturally, and with his family, he was not taught to be directly open with people. Imagine if Shane and Ilya were officially dating, and then one day Shane meets Svetlana, but Ilya HADN'T told Shane about their past. (That's happened in SOOOO many other shows, causing a big fight and/or break-up.). I don't like that so many people are like, 'take that Ilya!' - You slept around when you were 19-24 years old so, you deserve to have your attempt at intimacy thrown back in your face when you're 25. 🙄

My heart breaks for Ilya every time I watch this episode. BTW, here is what the author Rachel Reid said in back in September (she was talking about the book at the time, but the same applies to the TV series): "I get asked a lot about Ilya’s thoughts and feelings during (and leading up to) the “Tuna melt scene.” Here are some answers… Ok, so at this point in our story, Ilya is super in love with Shane but won’t admit it to himself. He’s still trying to play it cool, but he has also made this whole plan about getting Shane to spend the night. He knows neither of them have to be up early the next morning; conditions are perfect. He goes grocery shopping, he imagines what he will say when the time comes, he decides he will turn on a hockey game because that might get Shane to relax. All of this is preplanned. Ilya has been thinking about it for days. He doesn’t invite Shane to stay until after they’ve had sex. He waits for Shane to be relaxed and happy, then he asks. He makes sure he sounds perfectly calm when he asks—almost indifferent—but he REALLY wants Shane to stay. When Shane says yes, Ilya is celebrating inside. The “Shane” just slips out, and Ilya is mortified. In his mind he feels he’d just admitted all his feelings with a single word. When Shane says “Ilya” back, he’s flooded with relief and happiness. It’s a mirror of the _____ scene later. [I removed the text there because it's a spoiler for a later episode.] When Shane panics and leaves later, Ilya is DEVASTATED, but refuses to show it. After Shane leaves he’s miserable and embarrassed. And then Rose Landry happens."

So many moments in this episode are just heartbreaking. After Ilya calls Shane by his first name during that intimate scene, Shane responds in kind, but then gets scared and freaks out. So when Ilya then reverts back to saying, "Hollander," it breaks my heart. It's like he is saying, no, I'll take it back, just pretend I never said Shane, I don't want to lose you, please don't leave me. Ilya is absolutely devastated. Then he has to see photos of Shane everywhere with Rose. Yes, Ilya had been sleeping with Svetlana, but Shane is in a public RELATIONSHIP with Rose. Huge difference. When Ilya does that slow turn looking for Shane, I physically feel that gut punch. I feel that absolute panic that Ilya must be experiencing as he realizes Shane is probably there. (That's why he does that turn, he recognizes Miles as one of Rose's co-stars in the movie, so if Miles is there, Rose is probably there, which means Shane is probably there with her. And then right after that, Shane spot Ilya's teammates and realizes Ilya might be in the club, too). To have Ilya not only see Shane with Rose, but to see her dancing with him with her hands under his shirt, all the things he would love to be able to do with Shane in public, is devastating. And then the look on Shane's face when he's watching Ilya, a look that says, "Oh no, what have I done? What have I lost?" is more heartbreak. Episode 4 breaks my heart every time, but I still absolutely love it because it's so well done.

Regarding what alcohol to put in ginger ale--Captain Morgan's! It makes it taste like cream soda. You should make a little cocktail for your last two episodes--ginger ale is the traditional drink for a Heated Rivalry finale watch. You might not have noticed, but ginger ale is Shane's favorite drink and Ilya stocked it in his fridge for him even though Ilya is a Coke guy. He shopped for his little planned sleepover! In the books, we see a lot more about Shane's thoughts during his freakout in this scene. The whole day had been breaking their usual patterns--the intimacy of being in Ilya's real home, Ilya asking Shane to sleep over, Ilya making Shane food and having his favorite drink stocked, the cuddling and small talk on the couch--it was all too boyfriendy for Shane, who is in a lot of denial about his feelings. And then when Ilya leaves the room to take his dad's call, Shane starts thinking about Ilya's questions about girls and spiralling into gay panic as he realizes that his hookups with girls have all been unsatisfying, and no one else has ever been able to make him feel like Ilya does. And then Ilya saying his name was the final straw before he descends into total panic. Ilya isn't trying to upset Shane by talking about girls, btw--Ilya assumes they both hook up with other people when they're not together, and he's essentially fishing for more info about Shane by sharing some details about himself. If anything, he's also trying to reassure Shane that the other people he hooks up with don't mean anything to him. Sex is a fun and comfortable topic for Ilya, whereas it's a sensitive trigger point for Shane, since he's wrestling with a lot of internalized homophobia, so there's also some communication disconnect here (kind of like how talking about family is a safe conversation topic for Shane, whereas it's a trigger point for Ilya). Cannot wait for your reactions to the last two eps! Let's gooooo!

Harrison's remix of Everything She Said is absolutely amazing. I can't tell you how many times I've listened to the two versions together. Always loved the original, and it was THE perfect song for that scene. Kind of obvious, which the show didn't usually do, but also 100% perfect. No other song would have worked this well. Then the emotions really picked up and the remix dropped? Lord help me. I will say that Ilya isn't just developing feelings for Shane. Him watching him while he slept, that look he gave after he said he was lazy, and the look on his face after they used their first names shows that man is GONE. I love that you are getting just about as much out of this show as you possibly can, especially since it's your first time and you haven't read the books. I'm fine when people don't see every single thing, but it's more fun when you notice more of the details. Buckle up for the last 2 shows. Then you have to take a short 24 hour break before binging the whole thing the next day. Can't wait for you to post the last two. I just stayed up til 4 a.m. to watch these 2. You guys are great.

AHH!! That entire end scene has permanently altered my brain chemistry! CHOICE is represented everywhere all over it! In my opinion. There's the contrast of the flashes back and forth between Ilya and Shane, the lighting (bisexual flag colors or your stereotypical "male" and "female" colors contrasting), and Shane LITERALLY being sandwiched between Rose and Miles keeps you feeling the pressure of Shane being torn between two lives. (This is a turning point) And don't even get me started on the music!! The lyrics are perfection and I've had that remix playing on repeat on Spotify literally since I watched this scene the first time haha) Loved your guy's reaction as usual!! Dance it out, Sergio 😂

This is why I love watching with you guys. You are the first people I have seen react to and read the casual date day at Ilya's correctly. Reading the intimacy and Shane's panic when it got too real. Those scenes were lovely and tender, and you can feel something new blossoming between them. And THE CLUB. Has to be one of the best scenes in cinema history. It is absolutely elite. Chills. Or never wanted more in a relationship but the other person for whatever reason, doesn’t, or vice versa. Or how much it hurts to have your vulnerability crapped on by the other person or vice versa. When anyone who’s lived past 30 has some kind of a freaking past and unless you stayed your whole life with the first person you ever had feelings for or slept with, then you have a past. @28:23 no, Ilya is not out partying every night, especially not during the season. Jacob does montages to show how different their lives are *during the summers* (June-September) so where we see Shane reading & Ilya clubbing, or, we see Shane & his father at their summer cottage shmoozing, while Ilya is taking care of his father. But remember, during the season (Oct-May), we’ve seen Ilya either in hotel rooms, or home at his place. Recall that at the start of this episode, the montage showed from 2014-2016, and Ilya was showing less and less interest in clubbing or other people, and was mostly on his phone and messaging with Shane.

I think it’s character driven and really depends on who your fav character is lol. You’d be surprised how rose colored the glasses can get when you like a character a lot. I remember watching edits and comments about Red, white and royal blue and man…..the stuff that fans let Prince Henry get away with lmaoo. Like even if IIya pulled an Alex and went all in on a relationship they still would be giving Shane the same passes that they gave to Henry but won’t give to IIya even though the stories have striking similarities.

By the way I think Shane’s freak out was totally valid but it had nothing to do with “revenge for Vegas” or “competition” because IIya mentioned Svetlana and girls. It had everything to do with why was Shane feeling jealous about hearing about that. Why was he feeling awkward about the new level of intimacy. The cooking. The first names used. BOYFRIENDS do those things not hookup buddies. He was able to separate his attraction to guys and even his sexual moments with IIya(and two other men per the book) as separate from his sexuality which a lot of DL men do. It’s literally in the DL man handbook. But once things got real he got spooked and I get him totally because his sexuality was starting to scream at him.

I think what audiences sometimes miss (and book readers know) is what the problem really is for Shane at tunameltgate. Shane is overwhelmed by Ilya’s Best Boyfriend™️ behavior. As soon as Ilya says, “or you could stay”, Shane’s gay panic starts, he stutters, “stay?!”, and then, “you want to make me a tuna melt?” (Jacob told Hudson, “that tuna melt *scares* you!”). Shane has remained in profound denial by insisting to himself that this is “just” transactional, just sex, not a relationship, etc. But this day, Ilya is acting needy and desiring affection, wants to snuggle, showing feelings, etc. (in the book Shane says, this is what boyfriends do). The threat is that at this point, Shane STILL has not come to terms with his own sexuality at all, he’s not totally out to himself, so part of the freak out is losing control of the denial that he’s gay. They both looked like they were in the brink of saying I love you during the couch scene. I think he desperately wants to be bi or pan like Ilya is so maybe he can live a “normal” life. (hence Rose).

I didn't know scenes from this ep. were also filmed day one. I only knew of the All-Star press conference, Vegas and Tamp hotel scenes from day one. And those 3 alone were impressive enough for day one filming.

Late to watching this reaction. I love how much you guys get Iyla. However, I do think that the reason Iyla doesn’t push Shane, on staying, is one - he was hurt, and 2 - Ilya is really big on consent. He’s never going to force Shane to stay, if Shane was panicking, and really wanting to go.
