DEAN IN SHORTS?! YES PLEASE!! Really liked this episode and the gory bits are always suprising plus we get more into their past! Also, loved this storyline for Sam in this one!

*Also in our opinion, the actors portraying the younger Sam and Dean NAILED IT! They did so well and getting their attitude and personalities down without it feeling like an impression.

Sam and Dean investigate a series of murders at their old high school.

Cranks Lolo

Dean in those shorts is a legendary moment XD

Anthony Cano

Y’all have no idea how long I’ve been excited for yall to see this episode lol

DkLounge

In case you were wondering, this episode aired a few months before The Vampire Diaries started airing

Cass&Jason

Heh. I'm looking forward to watching this for one specific reason. 🤭 ETA Young Sam (Colin Ford) looks more like Jared Padalecki than Jared Padalecki does.

Karia_Winchester

Love how Dean wanted to hit on "legal" cheerleaders in this episode as a coach. Also in Smallville he dated a "legal" cheerleader while being a coach. Both times red was the main color. 😂

Anxious Em

This is such a sad episode. That last wave from Barry, knowing what he’s going to do. :( Colin Ford as Young Sam is so good. He’s the same actor that played young Sam in the Very Supernatural Christmas episode in season 3.

geekygiraffe

Definitely one of my top episodes!!

Stacey H

I love this ep! So many feels. Great reaction as always! Fun fact: Jensen is responsible for his gym teacher outfit including the shorts. When he saw the script he told the costume dept exactly the brand of shorts to get. His gym teacher (and I swear every gym teacher) wore that brand. 😂

Amina

Sergio's jaw drop and Cody's little squeal at the appearance of the gym shorts was everything 😂

CALM

Legendary get-up for Dean! Apparently, Jensen was the one to pitch the outfit and wanted to make it as ridiculous as possible. He went to the director with the shorts himself, convincing him that they were the ones and the costume designer was in tears laughing... (I think I heard about that in a convention video... + I can't believe I'm early enough to be the 1st one to comment this!)

LeslieW

This ep always gets me, so many feelings. Tragic. But I like how the title is after school special like those special episodes 80s and 90s shows had that were about things like drinking, drugs, suicide or like this ep bullying. And Colin Ford as young Sam is such incredible casting. Deans perfect young casting isn't until season 9 but you'll know when you get there.

Malene Aa

To be fair, Dean was only ten years old when he left Sam unattended for a couple of hours. John put far too much responsibility on Dean at such a young age. No child should have been expected to raise their younger sibling while also having to fend for themselves whenever their father disappeared for weeks at a time. I like John, but there's no denying that he neglected his sons in many ways. Dean never really had the chance to figure out who he was outside of being Sam's protector. His own dreams, ambitions, and identity were constantly pushed aside because taking care of Sam became his purpose. Sam got a brief opportunity to experience a normal life and pursue his own path, even if it didn't last. Sam and Dean had it rough. This show is special to a lot of people. The characters are deeply tragic but also inspiring and hopeful. It is a heavy show and yet it is a comfort show for many. I can pretty much mirror my life to this minus the supernatural elements. Me, being an older sister to a younger sister. Absent father and a mother who needed to be mothered. I had a lot of years feeling like my only purpose was to take care of my sister and my mother. No room for play and childhood foolery, show no weakness, no room for dreams and aspirations of my own. Just soldiering on...come mid twenties and I had to acknowledge how F***** up my childhood was to begin healing. I am good now and this show has been a big comfort through the toughest of times.

Cass&Jason

This episode is full of high school pop culture references: - The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton (a hug fan of the show) is on the chalkboard - Amanda Heckerling is a reference to Amy Heckerling, who directed Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Clueless. - Martha Dumptruck is a reference to Heathers, which you absolutely need to watch if you haven't already. - 21 Jump Street, obviously

Purple Nurple

You wanted Dean in shorts... you got him in shorts lol

Val

Not a spoiler but yall are so close to an episode im dying for yall to see because I think youll LOVE it. Lol. &&&the closer we get the more I cant wait Lol.

Amina

Also fwiw Cody, I thought that gaseous vs liquid quip was very clever lol

Purple Nurple

Also Colin Ford as Young Sam - best ever actor to play Sam. He does so well in fact that he players a younger Jared in another show after Supernatural ends! They loved him so much in his previous ep, he was actually a bit too young to play high school Sam, so they just went with how short he was and made it a thing in the episode lol.

Val

Yall when that girl was getting swirly killed may have been the best thing I've ever seen in my life.

Mando

One of my favorite episodes of the show! The way we get so much character growth from both brothers even when this episode adds nothing to the main plot is amazing. And I like how it portrays public school with the bullying and how it’s not just black and white and what dirk was going through.

gloomygraveyardgirl

This episode always hits me like a brick. And yeah the younger actors are a really good match!

Jael Halliwell

The teacher is Justin from Charmed! He's the guy from Coyote Piper who had a crush on Prue and she dated him for a few episodes.

Cassie

Why? It's so creepy, I wish they wouldn't keep adding in these stupid, predatory lines for a 30 odd year old Dean

Elisia

So fun fact. The actor who plays Young Sam, also worked with Jared Padalecki on Walker, playing Young Cordell to Jared's Cordell Walker

Karia_Winchester

Mainly for the mirroring of characters. I extremely disliked the path they had Lana's character go in Smallville with both Jason and Lex. Also hated his line in this episode. I was just making the comparison on two characters he played.

KatieBee

I think Jensen insisted on the shorts as a funny idea that he was excited about but in later years said he regretted it. But we the people don't regret it!!!

KayJayO

I also think Dean as a kid thinks he cannot admit he is unhappy because he believes that what his dad is doing is important and heroic—so who is he to complain?

katyggls

I always find it interesting how preoccupied Sam is with being perceived as a "freak", when it's actually Dean who seems to have the most trouble actually fitting in with "normal" people. Whereas Sam is pretty good at it. It's played for laughs, but the convo with Dirk's father about where the lock of hair is, is a good example. Sam is often able to get very weird info out of people without them feeling like it's a strange interaction. Dean not so much. We also see that wherever he went, Sam made friends, but Dean really didn't. He might have been able to fool some girls for a couple of weeks with his looks and swagger, but he didn't make real connections with people because he couldn't relate to them at all. Amanda had a pretty good read on him.

KatieBee

Thank youuuuu I knew he was familiar but there are so many shows and actors, sometimes I can't place a few

Jael Halliwell

No problem! 😁 I'm pretty good with recognizing actors but names fail me 😅 luckily I know Charmed like the back of my hand!

Cyndy

That's hilarious. He looks exactly like my gym teacher in the late 90s.

Rebecca Hopkins

It’s a cliche I know, but hurt people hurt people. And like most cliches, it happens to be true.

Vel

I understand where you are coming from, but 18 and 30 is not considered predatory in the eyes of the law. Creepy...? That's a different story. Morally it's a grey area depending on personal views and the show does a fantastic job of making you question those shades of grey. THAT is the point, IMO.

Rebecca Hopkins

And he was spot on! He was the spitting image of my high school male gym teacher (girls had a female gym teacher) in the 90’s, right down to the short shorts and whistle. Except our gym teacher hit on us underage girls (he hit on me more than once 🤮), had a pornstache mustache and a bad cocaine problem; he got fired for selling it to underage kids in our high school. Awww the early to mid 90’s. What a time to be alive 😂

Stacey H

OMG that’s so stereotypical. 😭 My high school gym teacher had that identical uniform. Shorts, whistle, and all. Jensen had it down perfectly. 🤣

Michele

Dean talked the talk, but did he ever actually walk the walk? I think a lot of that stuff was part of the mannerisms he put on the play the part he thought he had to play. He had horrible role models growing up. A bunch of scruffy, rought, hunters.

Michele

I think this episode gives a bit of a glimpse at the inner parts of both brothers. In different ways, of course. What you said after the episode is similar to how I think about what's really going on with both brothers. For me, it seems like Dean had to basically raise himself with few, to no, good role models. Seems like he committed to that live from the start and worked to push away anything thoughts for something different. He worked to make himself fit the life he had to live, regardless of how he really was. So putting on a tough exterior and such. Sam also had to raise himself, somewhat. But he knew that he always had Dean there. He was able to keep hold of things that registered with him. And tried to make his life fit what he wanted. As much as possible. The actor playing young Sam was already a big fan of the show and being able to play Sam was really top tier for him.

pamysue

The guy playing the teacher has been in so many small roles. Exciting news, he will be in "Vought Rising" with Jensen Ackels next year! Have you two seen "The Boys"?😃👏 My little sister has been a teacher for 20+ years. You remember the special ones.💖✌️

Trinity Bernhardt

I too believe he played up being more of a playboy than he was.

Trinity Bernhardt

It is true, and that is why Dean pushed the anti-social narrative in the 1st season. I think Dean is good at magnifying his swagger and cockiness to cover his feelings, and that allows Dean to lie to himself. He does it when he feels awkward or scared, and he looks so tough and confident, but Jensen keeps that touch in his eyes that shows he is usually terrified. He has such an attachment disorder. Amanda made him feel and so he lashes out and cheats, and lashes out again when she calls him out. I think Amanda was really fair for how she could have acted. Though more painful than a few names.

card

If Sam's english teacher looked familiar, it's because he played Prue's final major love interest Justin on "Charmed" in three episodes in Season 3, where he also debuted in a "high school flashback" themed episode for Piper's high school reunion. Coincidentally, the teacher he plays here is named... Mr. Wyatt. 😂

Sare

I think it’s partly because Dean didn’t care that he was a "freak" as long as he was with his family and fit in with them. He was even proud sometimes of being a hunter and knowing more than "civilians" about the Supernatural world. I think for Sam, he didn’t feel like he fit in with John and Dean growing up, and the hunting life didn’t feel safe or unifying to him, so he was the "freak" in his own family. So, he worked harder to fit in with regular people, and regular life, but didn’t really fit there either. I think he’s mire sensitive to being a "freak" because he feels like he’s never fit in anywhere, even in "normal" life.

deanandsamAO3

Colin Ford is such a perfect match for Sam/Jared. So cute. I love these flashbacks so much. :)

deanandsamAO3

I really enjoyed your in-depth comment on the episode. Well done.

katyggls

I don't agree that Dean doesn't care. He pretends not to care. But we see in other episodes that he longs for "the apple pie life" even more than Sam does.

Emma J Steele

Times like these you need Cordelia Chase... "What is your childhood trauma?!"

Sare

It’s not that I don’t think Dean cares about having a normal life, it’s that I don’t think he cares what normal people think about him. I don’t agree that he wants one more than Sam though, I see it more as them switching off on who wants out of hunting more depending on what’s going on in their lives. Who is actually able to stay away from hunting, imo, is a whole other thing.

Sonja

Ugh, I hated this, Dean says sometimes such creepy things about young women. I love it tho that Sam immediately shut him up lol.

qυєєяℓιвяα 🏳️‍⚧️

This was truly a sad episode. Really shows you truly don’t know what’s going on in someone’s life. I’ve been bullied and know what it could do to a person. Even made me legally change my name because of my speech impediment. Thankfully being trans it works now because in some ways that’s my chosen name. I’m glad all my high school bullies all later on apologized and now are part of the queer community with me. It also shows how bullying can affect people because most of my bullied were girls. And now I have a problem with women in authority.

usopps nose

rewatching this episode I forgot how heartbreaking it is ):

Sonja

Just an overall a really sad ep, for both Sam and Dean (and everybody else). That lovely teacher is probably one of the only people who genuinely wanted Sam to have control of his life, while mostly everybody else wanted to take it away from him. It's a pretty depressing environment to grow up in. (And yess, Dean's shorts and Sam as the hot janitor were awesome. 😆)

Natalie C

I believe they were also filming in the same school they used for Smallville High. I always thought this was a clumsy reference to Jason from Smallville.

Bex

You recognised Candace King (of course) but not the amazing Marie Avgeropoulos. Does that mean you never watched "The 100"? If not you probably should consider it.

J.C Writer

Love the Train to Busan sweater!! Such a good movie!!

Blue Dragonfly

You also can say that Dean accepts the reality that he is a freak and Sam is fighting it.

Blue Dragonfly

it has 7 seasons and it is not really horror but dystopic scifi.

Blue Dragonfly

Also iconic: the whistle makes me their god!

Anthony

Dean as a gym teacher lmao Probably the last time Sam was called a midget. These episodes/reactions dropped on my birthday! Just wanna thank you both for all the entertainment and laughs! I knew you would love this show and that others would start reacting to it, both have come to fruition. The best reactors with the best community on Patreon ! Love ya’ll !

Jbug

I really liked this episode, more for the story it tells and seeing more of there past. At its core a very sad story.. the actors were awesome as young Dean & Sam

Sanya Arif

I saw Colin in Daybreak and then I watched / binged SPN later and it was good to see him all little

love4Cook

At 12:15 “It’s a demon that’s in liquid phase not gaseous phase” was an incredible one-liner Cody. 🤣

Abrielle Wright

Before the nose job! She looks so different in the 100

Kimberly S. (Rawr)

After School Special is another of my fav episodes! That intro was SO DRAMATIC for no reason 😂 Absolutely love the high school flashbacks. The casting was so on point. And Miss Caroline Forbes herself with the cameo. Love Candace 💜 Dean as the gym coach in those shorts tho! Perfect 😂 Him absolutely decking that kid with the dodgeball gets me every time 💀 He was having way too much fun. The past was so sad with Barry being bullied & finding out he ended his own life. Sam sending that ghost out of that girl was wild. Little Sam took Dirk DOWN in that fight. Oof getting the backstory on Dirk was rough. So crazy that the possession was able to affect people from the bus. He had so much rage. The concept of using the “nerdy” kids to attack the popular kids was brutal cuz it ruined their lives too, knowing that they killed people. So dark. The gore was pretty good in this episode too. Amanda totally clocking Dean as being performative & just being sad and lonely in that flashback. Interesting seeing the boys’ different perspectives & journeys during their time at that high school. Dean started on top then grew to dislike it there while Sam’s was the opposite. Sam talking to the teacher at the end was heartwarming but sad knowing that he ultimately ended up in the family business anyways. Wonderful reaction & breakdown as always guys 🖤

First Question

Oh my goodness, the actor playing April is BEAUTIFUL!

First Question

Truman was the president who dropped the atom bomb, hence the school being called Truman, and the teams being the Bombers.

Melanie V Jones

I'm so glad the hints that the teacher was actually evil were a red herring, and that the final message is not "Dirk was not a bully" or "Sam was the real bad guy" but that these cycles of harm and pain hurt everyone, especially kids with no one to turn to or really see them.

rickie woodson

No sloppy joes since high school?! 😱 i make some every few years. Had some plant based ones a few months ago. Tots and joes mmm mmm sum good eatin'

rickie woodson

From experience: a lot of people leave high school and are still taking out their sadness, misery, and anger on others. It doesnt stop at high school if you never heal
