WOW! What a wild one, this one had plenty of surprises! Also, Hoyt what are you doing here?! Seeing another side of him was exciting! Plus more ways for the boys to tell their true thoughts means drama! What did you all think of it?!

Sam and Dean go to a town where men have beaten their wives to death.

Another show you guys should watch is Lucifer on Netflix don't know where is that anywhere else you guys will love it

card

Hi Hoyt! He basically filmed this right around the exact time they were filming True Blood S2, so you guys are in the same era all around on the channel right now.

The Horror Bandwagon

Wild!! I'm so glad too because we just went from the 90s with charmed and Buffy. We love this new era too!

The Horror Bandwagon

We heard we might like it! Will definitely keep it in mind once we are ready for more shows!

ashley kuate

I love this episode because Dean and Sam finally admit their feelings out loud, but of course they had to brush it off in the end instead of actually addressing and talking about it because they both definitely meant what they said.

MayuraDalinda

don't now what was up with the writers but goddamn if this isn't the most incest coded episode ever 😂 EDIT: (this is about to be a rant) about the whole HoW DaRe YoU ThiNk INceSt... its fiction, amusing yourself with different head canons doesn't reflect what you condone in real life.. for example: love Hannigram and really enjoy the 'Murder Husbands' aspect of the ship but, and I'm pretty sure most people understand this, I don't condone murder or cannibalism in real life! I think its undeniable that the show portrays the sibling relationship as the be-all-end-all.. hell Sera Gamble and Kripke have even joked about the show being the epic love story of Sam and Dean and they show that by mirroring Sam and Dean with couples.. in just this episode Dean is acting like Sam is cheating on him and when Clara mentions her ex-husband 'who she really loves but kind of wants to shoot' or 'one day she looked up and he was a stranger'.. the implication is that Sam is thinking about Dean. Now you can take that epic love story to be platonic/purely emotional or physically incestuous (personally I'm a gencest/emotionally incestuous enjoyer) but to pretend the show portrays normal sane sibling dynamics is a bit laughable

ash

I don’t ship wincest personally, in fact I don’t ship anyone with anyone in SPN, but one cannot tell me there were not intentional, especially emotional incestuous writing and subtext throughout the entire show. From s1-s15.

Tmatts

Didn't read it that way at all. I thought it was more about the seduction of trust and friendship. I appreciate that they made the point that it's possible to be seduced and deceived by more than just sex.

Tmatts

I love the twist in this episode showing that people can be seduced and deceived by more than just sex or wanting sex, people can also be seduced by trust, friendship, and/or companionship. The siren saw that they were onto it and took a different approach since they had already caught on to how it had been operating.

Rebecca Snyder

Haha I've been waiting pretty excitedly to see your reactions to this episode! It's definitely an interesting one and put even more of a wedge between our boys. To answer your question about how the fandom reacted while the show was airing: I don't think most fans have ever hated either of the boys, I think a lot of us just have a favorite haha. But I rarely saw people bash either of them or get angry over the implication of one being stronger than the other or whatever. (Cas did get a fair bit of hate throughout the show, though. He and his actor, Misha Collins, basically had dedicated hate clubs. It was wild!) Also: welcome to the episode that spawned entire fan analysis essays on Dean's sexuality! 😂 It wasn't the first or the last, but it was definitely one of the most popular episodes for people to pick apart or reference. Personally, I think the 'brother' twist was necessary for the situation that the writers were trying to put Sam and Dean into, but... It DOES definitely seem a little queer-coded lol

Pie

Bobby’s simply the best! I find it interesting that Sam doesn’t even bat an eyelid when he sees the siren in the hotel room. Given what he knows, he must assume that he had sex with Dean in order to poison him.

Josh Minke

so you are saying that brothers that love and care about each other is incest?

Anthony Carbenia

I feel like y'all would love Grimm it's so good

Wham8

The doctor + her hyacinths was a bit of an unresolved plot device. Why did she go to the stripper club? Why did she have hyacinths? Dean and Sam being stupid about failing to check out Hoyt (sorry, he'll always be Hoyt to me). Sometimes they don't deserve Bobby, who, once again, swoops in to save the day.

Sonja

Yeah, Supernatural is kinda known for its incestuous subtext lol.

Isaac

My mouth was agape. So many repressed emotions coming out in this episode. I always love when Bobby gets his screen time. ♥️

Moon

I love this episode so much, it has to be one of my favorites in season 4. And the twist of Dean's (and if you squint Sam's) siren being a man. Depending on what way you look at it, it can be read through different lenses (obviously queercoded) but also the unhealthy devotion the boys have for each other seen through the previous 3 seasons of sacrificing for each other (Dean selling his soul, and Sam being so desperate that he turns to the powers Dean disproved of) just to be able to have the other one back (selfishly).

Sonja

I've personally never understood this take. The siren literally says that Dean didn't want 'a b- in a g-string' but instead wanted his brother (which the siren turned into). So if the siren turning into a replacement for Sam is Dean being queer-coded, then he's also being incest-coded.

jirachii

highly recommeded! it's awesome

jirachii

this episode is recognized in the fandom as a silent confirmation of Dean being bisexual lmao

Sonja

Yeah, but Sam's really open-minded about queer stuff in general so it's normal that he doesn't react 🙏

Sonja

But how, I don't get it lol. The siren literally turned into Sam, the siren said so himself, so if this is Dean being bi, it's also him being into his bro in a non-brotherly way.

jirachii

its really just based on their interactions before the siren even mentions being a brother

KayJayO

I was 14 when this aired and I was the only person i knew at the time who watched the show weekly, so i have no idea what other people thought 😂

LeslieW

Which is something that shows up quite a bit in Gothic horror so it's not surprising kripke sprinkles it in here and there.

Rebecca Snyder

I mean, like I said, I personally think the twist was needed for what the writers were trying to achieve. To me, the queer coding is simply the fact that out of all the many, many ways they could have gotten that point across, they used a siren. And some of the siren's lines that were already talked about in this reaction. I was mostly just mentioning it because they did, and because it's been a big part of the fandom discourse since... well, since it aired haha

LeslieW

That's funny because since I joined the Fandom in 2020 I have seen so much dedicate hate spread about jared to him and about him. Way more than the other two. And I was a Dean girl at the time so it's not that I was biased. And it's all crap because jared is the kindest most loving person who genuinely cares about everyone no matter of race, religion or sexuality. But there are hate groups for each which is truly aweful considering they're all good guys and close friends.

Astoria

When you think about it, the men have all met their ‘dream woman’, had sex and all that. Meanwhile, Dean didn’t meet an ‘Asian woman with big breasts’ and have sex with her, but had a friend / a mate with whom he shared the same interests and with whom he could simply relax and spend time. A mate he can trust. That’s so incredibly sad and says so much about his character.

KatieBee

The line of landline phones saying like FBI, CIA, homeland security at Bobby's house is one of my favorite things in the whole show. I was so gagged the first time I saw it! Bobby has it all figured out, he's just my absolute fave. 💕

Rebecca Snyder

Mm, that's unfortunate :( I guess I should have specified that I haven't been active in the fandom in some time (probably since about 2017) and can really only speak for when I was, sorry

LeslieW

This can be a devisive episode among fans. Personally it's another example to me that Sam is the most important person in Dean's world (platonically in canon) thus the siren took the form of a younger brother to look up to Dean and bond with him. Some take it as Dean being bi (which is fine, I have a few Dean m/m ships I enjoy from the show) but if that's the presuposition then it's clearly about Sam which can get... sticky. Thus we have different camps that see it very differently and they Will go to war over it, so good luck navigating the comments.

Stacey H

Bobby saving the day! And running the phones. Love him! This is a fun episode but I don’t see the Dean queercoding/Dean is bi thing that some people (not everybody) in fandom talk about. Dean is increasingly suspicious of Sam to the point of calling unknown numbers in Sam’s phone, faking being asleep so he can eavesdrop on Sam’s calls, and then calling out Sam for banging monsters, all before the siren ever gets to him. The siren appealed to Dean’s feelings of not being able to trust Sam and wanting that easy brotherly relationship. And of course instead of clearing the air at the end they just keep on keeping on.

Vel

Kripke has always been consistent on what the show was about and this episode reflected that perfectly. Even so, the writers were incredibly clever and fed every ship imaginable in ways that are still being discovered today...lol. No two people see this show the same way, and I think that is what sets SPN apart from all the rest. It was the spark of possibility that launched entire fanfic platforms and genres that are still going strong today. What other show has that kind of legacy? But you're correct about certain views being fought over. It's exasperating at times, especially when it really doesn't matter except to the people fighting. Life is too short and we have a ton of content to enjoy.

Sare

If it’s queer-coded, than it’s queer-incest-coded. The siren very clearly is a stand in for Sam (and later it’s a stand-in for Dean to Sam) in particular, not men in general. The fact that the siren can be a man is just the “clever twist.”

ash

If that’s what people interpret from this episode, then it’s implying Dean is bi for SAM of all people …

Rebecca Snyder

Okay. I have no urge to argue about things that have been argued about for years by people who have much stronger opinions on it than I do, so I'm not going to reply to further replies on this. I have 0% desire to get into Supernatural discourse in 2026, I was just mentioning what happened in the fandom lol

jirachii

im just sayin what I know 🤷🏿

Cyndy

I think the writers have characterized them as codependent due to childhood trauma. And this shows up in a very interesting ways. For example, dean going through Sam's phone. Listening in on his conversation and then pretending to be asleep. You could easily see that used as a couple trope. It's there in the subtext of the show if it isn't in the text. Not a wincest shipper, but I get the subtext

Cyndy

Basically Dean acting like a jealous boyfriend throughout the episode....lol

rose mnor

@Pie It's interesting to note that the siren's immediate way to transmit its saliva to victims here is to transform into a male to trap Dean into ingesting it. I mean, how would that even work if the idea is that if someone perceives Dean as "the straightest man to ever be straight," that would be the direction to go? This part is the key, the siren's modus operandi. The siren couldn’t have possibly predicted that Dean would take out his flask, drink from it, offer it to him, and drink from it again. He must have planned to at least kiss Dean for the saliva poison to work as the initial and quickest method, and if he didn’t think he could have kissed him, he wouldn’t have been a male. He chose the appearance that made the task easiest. The bi Dean subtext, the dynamic he has with Nick, and the actual seduction siren Nick is playing on Dean can co-exist with the brothers and their sibling bond troubles. The siren can go to both for emotional and sexual needs. Sam is not a potential romantic or sexual partner for Dean. Nick is. And yes, that can be a layer; it's called subtext, while it is ostensibly about Nick filling that emotional loneliness in Dean because Sam and Dean are drifting apart.

geekygiraffe

I just assume when the siren was stealing the blood from her office they also took some flowers to use as "evidence" to frame her to Dean & Sam. I think she just had pretty flowers in her office lol

The Force

Thirded though it's not really a "horror" but it's very angel's and demons and supernatural shenanigans (as the title suggests xD)

Sonja

I recently found out that AO3 was created by a wincest shipper (who's a famous author nowadays) and omegaverse genre was created by a J2 RPF fic (with Jared being the first alpha and Jensen the first omega lol). Not them at the crime scene all the time 😭😂

LeslieW

Yes. ASTOLAT/Naomi Novik was the driving force in creating A03 because the wincest fics kept getting purged from LJ and other fanatic sites. It was created to be an archive but also for people to be able to post 'taboo' fics and not have to worry about them being taken off. And it's why their tagging system is so good, so people can exclude things like that in searches if they want. Fun fact, the first wincest fic was created within hours of the pilot airing. And the first omegaverse fic was indeed J2. One other interesting fact is Eric Kripke read a fic someone on set gave him (possibly Kim manners if I remember right) with him and Jared where he bends jared over and... well he mentions finding it hilarious since Jared's so much bigger than him, lol.

The Force

I'd argue it's *considered*, not recognized. Recognized implies it's canonized and generally agreed but it's heavily debated. Which may be kinda a small nitpicky/pedantic thing but sometimes you gotta be aware of what you imply with your words cause that's how you get reactions like you got xD

Michele

This episode was interesting, but also troublesome. We got what I like - hearing what the brothers are really thinking - but it's sad. I think it portrayed Sam the worst, with what he was saying being a lot harsher than what Dean was saying. But, it's letting us see what Sam is really thinking and what is behind what he's been doing. It's also hitting us with how much he's changed since season 1. The actor that played the siren did a really good job. He's good on True Blood too, but I think I've seen him in other shows - but I can't remember. I don't know how the fandom reacted back then. I didn't interact with other fans back then. But, the fandom does often get into arguments over episodes like this. Every now and then I would realize that we had several episodes with nothing happening on the main story parts - like the Seals, why hasn't Cas been around and what's going on with Sam and Ruby that we're not seeing?

The Force

I *love* this episode (and hate it for some of the discourse) because it's a classic supernatural twist. Siren's are classically creatures who thrive on not *lust/sex* but *love/desires* of all kinds. Hell go even further back to pre-christianization they're actually more Psychopomp soul guides and/or tempters who use forbidden knowledge - later twisted to forbidden wants and then the "dangers of seduction". They ran the gamut. Lust especially is an incredibly modern take. Even christianized versions still relied on bonds of real love not just sexuality until the last 50-100 years or so. Supernatural *loves* to take old parts of monsters and bring them back to the forefront, or twist them a bit and reshape how monsters are seen. I always loved that the Siren gets to the boys through familial/fraternal love and/or a desire for comradery especially in a moment when Dean is questioning that with Sam.

Nancy Nicolai

It was 2009 which was a long time ago but I think I remember some people saying that Supernatural would be just fine without Sam ( which I thought was insane)forgetting that Dean & Sam's relationship is the driving force for this entire show😎

Michele

quite the stretch - Sam had no clue the guy was the siren yet.

Michele

This is the very thing I was afraid of. The comments can get very crazy and also misleading. The most vocal people get heard, but there's a lot people out there who don't know what the heck all of this is about and just love the show. I just wish people would not keep feeding the monster with their comments.

pamysue

Bobby Singer is my Supernatural spirit animal.💖 Sam & Dean's alias' Stiles & Murdock are Mel Gibson & Danny Glover's characters in the "Lethal Weapon" movies. There is always a reference to their names.

Ebony

It’s very common to see familiar faces on this show. It went on for so long that it honestly feels like everyone was on it at some point or another. I can hardly watch a new show without saying “hey that person was on Supernatural!” At least once lol

Trinity Bernhardt

I don't read it as incest, but it did make me raise my eyebrow on the bi theory. I try not to think about Wincest though, so my mind didn't go there. It was a very interesting choice to have a male siren for Dean.

Trinity Bernhardt

It all depended where you were in the fandom. I saw so much Misha and even Jensen hate, mostly from Jared fans. I did tend to block anyone engaging in hate, regardless of who it was about, so eventually my algorithm was mostly clean, but that was my experience. Granted most of it was from a specific group that was all connected together. Not necessarily Jared fans as a whole.

rose mnor

@Michele Let's avoid labeling opinions in a not-nice way, shall we? This is a safe space for us, and I'm sure Sergei and Cody welcome all and any opinions, even those they don't agree with, in this space.

Pie

As soon as Sam sees him sitting on the bed, he says, ‘You?’ in a tone that makes me think he knows. But of course, that’s just one way of interpreting the scene.

Trinity Bernhardt

It doesn't have to be weird. It is normal for people to be attracted to people who remind us of family. Not necessarily directly, but the relationship dynamic or the personality traits. There is nothing inherently unhealthy about it. Nick reminded Dean of having a little brother who admired him, while also connecting with him personalitywise in a way Sam never did. Just because they have such different interests.

rose mnor

@ashhhole13 Trust and emotional availability can also be factors for those who weren't into THAT, like Cody had gone into. Dean said a couple of times he didn't trust Sam when he suspected Sam had fallen under the siren's spell. And "trust" is also the word Nick repeats to Dean when Dean falls under his spell in the car, that Dean can trust him, unlike Sam whom Dean no longer trusts. The word Nick said to Sam that bound him and Dean together in the motel room, too, was "trust." Besides trust, Dean this episode had mostly felt that Sam had emotionally distanced himself from him, no longer feeling that they were as close as before. That's where Nick also bragged to Sam about him being emotionally available to Dean as per what he needed. There are several ways to interpret what had canonically been said; we don't have to box ourselves in.

Alex Montrose

Ah the perilous discourse on Dean being bi-coded. I feel like a proud Papa watching his babies take their first steps.

rose mnor

On the Castiel front, the oft-repeated behind-the-scenes tea was that Misha Collins was signed up initially for 3 episodes only, until 4.03 In The Beginning, and then it increased to 6. By that notion, he was supposed to be killed off in episode 4.10 Heaven and Hell; most likely speculation was by Alastair in the altercations in the barn. So by now it has been four episodes lapse since pending his next signed one. That being said, I think it isn't a spoiler anymore that the 6-episode count has increased (duh); the show's creator had officially reported that he was so very happy with his performances thus far. And I just feel so excited and can't wait to watch his next episode with you guys, whenever that may be.

jirachii

yea that's definitely fair, I didn't wanna start all this lmao

Lucy

Definitely shows that a lot of what we consider to be 'classic Dean' is a front - for all his talk about how this is a 'dream case', in the end, he spends no time talking to any of the dancers at the club and the siren knew instantly that transforming into a dancer wouldn't be the most effective ploy on him.

🧸

likeee i really wish u could talk about the enmeshment and borderline covert incest without people pearl clutching over the concept of wincest shippers

deanandsamAO3

Sam was so sexy in that scene with Cara. She has good taste. Dean is a handsome man but when it comes to women, he's too obvious. Sam has that air of mystery about him which appeals more. :) As for the siren, he fed on Dean's unending love for his baby brother, in this case receiving a high from brotherly love instead of the sexual variety. Dean sold his soul for Sam because he couldn't live without him by his side. No man hath greater love...

Meredith Konicki

I very genuinely love both Sam and Dean -- they are wonderful, nuanced, flawed, and deeply loveable characters. Episodes like this I think are so important for the DNA of the show, even if they can be divisive looking back on them. Having watched the show as it aired and multiple times through since, I've never viewed this episode as anything more than it is on its face, though that isn't to rule anything out -- reading the comments is so interesting because I never even knew all of this drama and contention existed. 😂 It's like stumbling into TVD 10 years after it stopped airing and casually telling folks you're a fan of X character and then being lectured for 30 mins over why you shouldn't be. 😂 Fandom is wild.

LeslieW

And also because they are so far apart right now with Dean feeling like Sam is keeping secrets with Ruby. I'd think Dean is looking for the simplicity if an earlier version of his relationshipvwith Sam. He's having trouble trusting Sam these days as he said while under the sirens spell.

Tom

Dean acting like a big brother you mean

Danny

When you two were trying to remember the name murdoch, i recommend a show called murdoch mysteries. 19th century detective show based in my province ontario but more specifically Toronto

shuff!

There’s something kind of interesting about the fact that the siren continually gives itself the names of Disney princesses. It ties into the fact that it wants to fall in love over and over again, but doesn’t have any interest in maintaining an actual relationship. There’s also the fact that the siren introduces the oxytocin into peoples’ systems through saliva, and those movies tend to revolve around the couple sharing that first kiss. … I’m thinking too hard about this, but it’s sort of there, right? Also, I love this twist where Nick is actually the siren. I love how Jim Parrack’s entire performance shifts after he manages to infect Dean. Good stuff. After that, though, I can’t quite take this episode seriously. Nick’s behavior toward Dean after he infects him is not exactly brotherly, despite everything that he’s saying, and neither Dean nor Sam act like they’re anything but infatuated with him, nor does the episode bother to explain why they *shouldn’t* be. So we end up with this uncomfortable conflation of brotherly and romantic love that is also undeniably homoerotic, despite how much the episode flat-out refuses to go there. It’s messy. (But also kind of funny. Rewatching the show is really driving home the juxtaposition between the fandom [super, super queer] and the show itself [*aggressively* heteronormative].)

Jolie DuBois

I just KNOW you guys would absolutely LOOOOVE Once Upon a Time. That show is a masterpiece. It’s so good. Very adventurous

Mike Williams

I was getting online to watch this episode and recommend Lucifer. Strongly second this recommendation. Another great show with characters you will quickly develop a bond with.

Elisia

This episode does a fantastic job of showing how big the divide between the brothers is becoming... on both ends. Sam's frustrations, and Dean's blatant lack of trust. It's also a really interesting choice to have this one follow After School Special

Susie

Yeah sorry but this stuff should have been over once the show ended with Dean as a canonically straight man. We have had Sam inside his head and Sam sees him dreaming of Lisa. We have had the Jinn all over his brain to create a fantasy world to keep him in the dream and the Jinn gives him a fantasy GIRLFRIEND. There are other examples I can draw from, but I can't because I don't want spoilers. The point I am making here is that if Dean was hiding or repressing his sexuality, it would have been caught by somebody or something when they took a trip inside his dreams and inside his mind. They never saw him with anybody except females. I will also state that I believe the man who played Dean for 327 episodes who said during a convention that Dean was straight. I would think he knows the character better than anyone. I respect him as an actor and how much he put into the character because he cared. I wish people would respect him. It's fine for people with their fanfics as long as it's not being shoved onto the character in the actual show. Dean's sexuality has no bearing on the story, so if he was indeed bi, then the show would have no reason at all to not allow that to come out. I mean they had 15 seasons and the show ended in 2020 ( not like it was 2007 or anything ).

AJ

BOBBEH!!! 🎉🎉🎉

Cass&Jason

As someone who joined the SPNFamily in S3, this episode gives me very unpleasant flashbacks. This is a very passionate fandom, prone to overreactions due to attachments to Sam or Dean or Castiel, or a combination of the three. Some have never forgiven Dean, some have never forgiven Sam, and some have never forgiven Castiel. And sometimes it seems like it's getting worse, not better.

Cass&Jason

I recommended they watch it when they watched Jus in Bello because Nancy the Virgin is played by Aimee Garcia, aka Ella Lopez.

Blue Dragonfly

it is really good that you watched this serieses in chronological order.

Anthony

A case involving strippers, did Dean find the One Wish Willow ? Lol Lmao that song is from Bride Of Chucky, when he’s rocking out 🤘!! “Idjit!” Lol love when Bobby calls people that I like how just about every season Sam and Dean have been made to tell each other how they really feel about each other ! Bobby saves the day! Again! Never seen True Blood so every time you guys said Hoyt I think of Ethan Hawke in Training Day!

Jordan Butts

bobby is the goat and we should watch harper’s island

Jade Wakeman

Belle was my bisexual awakening. This episode always bring me back haha

Kimberly S. (Rawr)

That intro was brutal! Dean was way too excited about the case involving strippers 😂 Not the place where they all come Sergio 💀 Absolutely love seeing adaptations of mythological creatures. What a perfect place for a siren to work in the modern day honestly. Love Bobby having all the different phone lines for their cover stories. So clever! 🙌🏼 Bobby calling them idjits will never not be iconic. The Hoyt cameo tho! Dean’s “I’m not doing this for you, I’m doing it for the girls” 😂 I appreciate how you think the story is going one way and then it swerves in another direction. Love seeing twist after twist in the show. Oof the boys having their confrontation both under the spell was tense. Cody‘s “this is not an emergency” when Dean went for the axe had me rolling 😂 Yes Bobby coming in clutch with the save 👏🏼 The siren still looks pretty good after all these years. And the boys do what they do best…push their feelings down until it bubbles over 💁🏽‍♀️ Totally loving these reactions & breakdowns 🖤

Flubbedsquid

My headcanon: Dean: "Maybe it was when I was in hell" The siren: HOld uP WHAT THE FUCK

ariel mermaid

Matt’s mom also played in a episode of charmed as a siren that went after Cole and married men lol

Vulpix

I 100% count this as another notch in the "bisexual Dean Winchester" count lololol

Barb

bro this comment section 😭

Natalie Halveston

@16:00 the actress looks just like Christina Aguilera.

rickie woodson

is this going to be a succubus?? "sex and violence"

rickie woodson

thats not vague at all. sailor just means man (using sailor cause sirens are sea creatures and the sailors are what they are easiest victims and ones named in myths), bronze dagger (knife made of bronze, a metal), blood of sailor under the spell of the siren aka a victim. so get a knife made of bronze, bleed a sirened (sirenized?) victim enough to coat the blade, then stab stab stab. easy peasy, simple pimple

rickie woodson

i do like how whimsical the show is in a mundane way. "yeah we did no background checks, interview or waiting period. just walked in and got these jobs day of. including a school full of kids when we are MEN"............MAGIC

rickie woodson

its obviously hoyt to me. but i do view dean as bisexual so im bias...... he was at the toxicology place at the same time as them so could have swiped the blood samples. he is dean's dream guy, where sam and the doctor are just physically attracted to each other without a mental or emotional connection.

Luke

Would love to see your reactions to seeing the episode titles for the first time!!
