Thank you for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

Some of the stuff pulling Max's attention there in panel 2 might be explained... eh, no, probably not. I mean, maybe way down the line, but I'm not going to detour this encounter into a Stygan culture crash course. I feel most of what Max is looking at probably isn't self explanatory, but should be enough for you guys to guess at reasonably well. None of it is critical to the scene, I wanted to show that Max isn't jumping into a fight without having some idea of what she's doing.

The "shimmering crystal shield" on Max's arms is just an effect Cora programmed into her Glowbod in case there was a need for Max to explain away her ability to take a hit. Max didn't rove out looking to get into a duel, but she understands serendipitous comic book tropes well enough to not have put some preparation into her disguise.

The glowbods the team is wearing are solid projections, for reasons previously explained, but they're not like Cora's hard light rig. Cora's is properly battle ready and requires quite a bit more power and computer cycles to run. The glowbods do offer some actual protection, but it's about like motorcycle "armor." It's not going to stop a bullet or blade with any real skill behind it, but the illusion won't shatter if someone trips on a curb or bumps into a lot of people in a crowd. Maxima's personal fortitude field actually protects the parts of the glowbod that are nearly skintight, so probably not the pauldrons, horns or the leather vest she has over the cuirass. Or the hair. All the girls are wearing their hair pinned up, because trying to track and cover the movement of hair with the hologram is just asking a little too much of the glowbods. It's fine if the hair is mostly just hanging there, but if someone gets caught in a windstorm or starts headbanging, it's just not going to be able to keep up.

But for Max, if she's deflecting hits on her arms, then her disguise should be able to weather almost anything she's likely to encounter on the station.

BTW, I don't know what happened to Max's funnel cake in panel 7. I guess she dropped it into her left hand so she could pinch the bridge of her nose, or rather, of her glowbod's mask's nose, which would probably be odd looking behavior among always-wearing-masks-Stygans, but then she transferred it back to her right had to toss to Sydney. Look, if I'd drawn her doing the nose pinch with her other hand, it would have covered up too much of her face, making her expression harder to convey. Don't think about it too hard.

All because of funnel cake.😆 Max got a headstart on blowing off that steam. Fight!

Typo in the bottom line. Is the loser looser than the winner? (I don't know which brain cell *that* just came from ...)

Peabody

Did Sydney drop her funnel cake catching Max's?

So, how fast will things go from "the blade of the rising sun" to "the shards of the shattered sword"? (As for the funnel cake: easiest solution would be if she had been gripping it against her palm with the little & ring fingers of her right hand while pinching the bridge of her nose)

Panel two works perfectly. We don't need to know what she knows to see she knows some stuff, and we can start to guess. In fact... is that their W/L record? I wonder if his companion there is his only win. Or, top is prowess and bottom is social rank.

Stygan culture seems to allow the challenger to have a sword and the receiver to be unarmed. Not that it makes any difference to Max. I wonder if the fact that the duelist has more flecks around his shooting star symbol than the girl he's with matters.

There is, a house, in New Stygia. Calllled the Blaaaade of the rising Sun. And she'll be, the ruin, of many of it's poor men. And God, we know, He's one.

You have to appreciate that BORS's babysitters don't appear to care if he gets his arse tromped. My takes is "Comet: house sigil, flecks: house rank". Babysitters clearly have no flecks, thus no rank.

I'm pretty sure that the close up on his horn tells Max his age. Older Stygians have longer, more developed horns, so the fact his are quite underdeveloped is a good indication he's not done with puberty yet.

Young space master is about to get his young space ass super earth beaten.

Challenge honourably made, challenge honourably accepted, beating honourably dealt to entitled little shit.

Max has his number. Cliche hot-shot kid looking for cheap thrills and cheap kills. 1. The lady is a lower ranking member of the clan. Speculation, his weapons tutor. 2. The bodyguards are cool with this. They are quite willing to carry him home on his shield. In a fetal position if Max goes easy. 3. Max sussed his age from is little horns and lack of fangs. She's gonna take away his sword and spank him with it.

Slightly off topic but can we get an update to the cast profile/wiki? I can't recall who Detla is off the top of my head and it only covers the characters up to page 160-ish.

Michael Longcor, 'Swordsman' The Swordsman What boy is this who blocks my way, his hand upon his sword? A challenge then; another pup who will not be ignored; He lusts for glory, longs for fame, he wants it all today; He thinks an aging swordsman will be weak and easy prey. It's beat and bind and cut and thrust, It's eye and arm and breath, It's nerve and brain and steel and blood, The Swordsman's dance of death. Now hear me boy, and listen well before you draw the blade: If you would step the Dance of Death the piper must be paid; 'Tis true I'm not now what I was; my hair and beard are gray, But if you'd see tomorrow's dawn, best walk away today. You think your youthful speed and zeal will be the death of me, My mind holds far more deadly tricks than you would live to see; My wrist and arm are tempered steel, while yours are forming clay, I killed my first before your birth; I'll kill you if you stay. It's all for naught; your sword leaps out, mine follows in reply; It's sad, for I know what you don't - I know that you can die. No time for words, but ponder this while choking on your blood: Old swordsmen get to be that way by being very good. It's beat and bind and cut and thrust, It's eye and arm and breath, It's nerve and brain and steel and blood, The Swordsman's dance of death.
