Thank you for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

Yes, fundamentals are more important than flash. It also helps if you juuuust enough super speed to make the other guy appear to be moving in slow motion.

Action pages are hard to comment on, because there's usually not all that much happening. Sure, someone could pull some crazy new Jutsu out of their ass, but if that happens, that means you're in for 12 pages of flashback to justify how the character suddenly has the perfect skill for the situation he finds himself in but for some reason has never mentioned before. (Yeah, Naruto, I'm looking at you.) Sydney's not plumbing the depths of fantasy, sci-fi or superhero tropes, and the "so dumb they could only have survived to their current age because it's a sitcom" character isn't doing something dumb.

So, enjoy the oh-so subtle Street Fighter homage and feel free to discuss that time you brought all your best moves to that game of Street Fighter II Turbo Excel Hamarabe Fried Chicken in the arcade, and some unassuming guy stood there on the player 1 stick and whooped everybody's asses by stuffing all the super moves with Jabs and Shorts and leg sweeps. Or vent your outrage over my Naruto drive-by.

To be fair to Naruto, I've only watched... actually it's been a while. I think it was most of the first season. But my memory of it was that in 20 or so episodes, about 3 seconds of actual time passed, and the rest of each episode was flashbacks to them learning some Jutsu. That or the pink-haired ninja girl was having some internal, possibly boy related anxiety attack? I found that part fairly amusing, actually.

“Forced onto the defensive” - hasn’t had to move her feet from where she started - hasn’t needed to use her other hand yet. Ahh, poor boy…

Total Absolutism

Eventually Naruto became Ninjaball Z and that was sad.

Dude is now realizing why Monks in Pathfinder are basically a cheat code on fight control

Naruto isn't quite that badly paced, though it isn't much better. After a while they do finally drop the constant mid-fight flashbacks, as they stop introducing new characters who need to have some back-story explained. Unfortunately, then it goes into more Dragonball-esque fights that still take 10 episodes to do a 5 minute fight. At least there were some fun training episodes between those portions.

Now as he goes to get up, double light punch, tap towards him, light kick into Heavy punch. Raging Maxima!

I’ll see why my mouth is a crippling - urk

"Boring. Boring. Boring. So boring. I am so bored. Soooo bored. BORED!" -Max

"You do not deserve such a weapon...."

Now uppercut juggle him in a corner!

Some champion fighters think kicks are a bad idea, because they're not as strong as punches and can leave the kicker vulnerable. I figure they're good for both reach and variety, which reduces predictability.

Where did her funnel cake go?

BJ

Oh no, Max has begun the low kick spam.

Miyaa

I look forward to Max’s special where it all fades to a silhouette, she undresses, beats the guy senseless, turns into a crane at one point, kills the guy, then does her catch phrase “me bouncy!”

So, Naruto *does* make extensive use of flashback, but they *also* have lots and lots of training arcs, especially within the first twenty episodes because they are explicitly rookie ninjas still being trained in the fundamentals by their Sensei, so I think you may be getting some sequences mixed up. That said, the pacing and over-reliance on flashbacks *is* a valid criticism, I just don't think you'd have gotten to the point where that stuff starts yet if you only got around 20 episodes in.

Eric Loken

Open mouth, land on back. There is another trope where someone has enough skill to realize that the other person is *vastly* more capable and only playing with them.

eddi_TBH

Darn. Just as he was justifying his incapability of defeating her, Max brought his world tumbling down. And I bet he will forget any break fall lessons because this caught him flat footed... literally.

Typo: “sooner of later” = “or”

akrasia

I wonder what the victory conditions are for such duels. Unable to continue? First blood? Hit the deck? Being de-pantsed?

Chimera80

Question: does he *specifically* mean to mock “open hand” practitioners? Vs “bare hand”?
