Thank you for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

Destra eventually gets it. "Oh, because they are slaves! Yes, this amuses."

Garamm and Lapha aren't in a position to quit their current employment arrangement, but they are getting housed, fed, trained and paid, (albeit in U.S. dollars,) but you try explaining the difference between that and slavery to a Hell Arch Duchess.

I don't know about you, but telling me that the ringer you want to enter into the giant battle royale might cause the galactic government to sanction the ringer's planet because she's just that powerful is a pretty decent sales pitch. I'd be like, "Yeah, I'll put a sawbuck on her."

I think I've said this before, but the Xevoarchy isn't a capital T "The Galactic Government," they're more like a mandatory UN slash NATO slash INTERPOL and a Federal Reserve. Everyone's welcome to govern themselves however they see fit, but as soon as you start flying into someone else's space or try and sell your particular space bread at market or try to borrow money from a species the next star system over, that's the Xeevoarchy's bailiwick. Every space faring race has to contribute a portion of their navy to the Xeev fleet, which makes maintenance and refueling and all that a prime example of Why Not To Do It That Way, but keeping every race invested in the set up is important. There are loose formulas dictating how many ships a race is required to contribute. It's not a flat percentage, because the race with the most ships would accrue undue pecking power, and races that only have 20 ships to their species probably need every one of them. Also it's kept a bit loosie-goosie so races don't try and game the system by skirting ship tribute rules by not building that one hundred and first ship, which they would then need to contribute, or by decommissioning an old scout ship the same day they launch their new Planet Crusher Meganaut class vessel.

And they're generally not over-reactive and calling for Exterminatus or even crazy sanctions at the drop of a hat. If anything they tend to be a little slow to react, but there's no harm in being a little cautious. Between Supers presenting a new galactic enigma and Sydney sporting her by-now-everyone-assumes Nth tech baubles in Earth media and a video with about a grillion views on UniverseTube, Terra's secrets are more or less out there.

HFY rules state that when human join, the ships that they contribute are reverse engineered from 20 different races, and are thirty times bigger than the ships other races contribute, because if humanity is going to be a part of a joint navy, humanity is going to be the most terrifying part of it. And if the gauge for “equal” is number of ships in the navy, but you can’t contribute beyond that percentage, then we’ll beat ‘em in tonnage. If everybody else is contributing eight blockade runners, we’re contributing eight executor super star destroyers.

I'm picturing the sort of shenanigans that went on with naval treaties about a century ago in the Posr-WWI period (wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Naval_Treaty).

Michael Obert

Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha! It's funny because they're work slaves! Oh, we adventurer's love a good work-slave comment (LOL)

Maxima mentions "supers" but has anyone explained to the others what that means yet?

Stephen Gilberg

Not sure whether Destra meant to say something mild or her translator doesn't distinguish between "poop" and "shit."

J. Kevin Carrier

Max's last line reminds me of the intro to Charlie's Angels: "But I took them away from all that, and now they work for me. My name is Maxima." (cue '70s pop-funk theme)

That's the second thing I'm waiting for.

I'm fairly certain these people know about the fiasco of the planet that Sydney was trapped on and forced to 'grind a few levels'. If I'm remembering the pages correctly the Uber Kaiju she was taking down there are individually considered extinction level threats to a planet, much less the numbers of them she was fighting and taking down. Now, I'd love to see they're faces when they're told that Maxima is Sydney's superior officer and considered a more dangerous combatant. Xevoarchy sanctions? That's nothing. How about someone who has a reasonable chance to win against someone using obvious Nth Tech and is prepared for the fight? Mind you, I'm not entirely sure that the source of Maxima's powers isn't some Nth Tech as well, just not obvious (or even reliably detectably) Nth Tech.

Wage slaves. A common situation on Earth. You can leave... you can also not make payments on your house and car, you can not have any healthcare at all, you can starve.... Means people better have another job lined up before they jump ship. Of course, the two indentured slaves Maxima has can't leave at all. But it's more like a mutually beneficial prison sentence than slave labour. So I suppose they are free to quit and accept the alternative. Which would still put them above a significant portion of people on Earth (there is a reason homeless people often try to get themselves arrested in the winter).

Leading up to major battleships that never got their big chance to duel with each other. Mostly sunk by aircraft or ganged up on by smaller ships.

I'm really liking Javelina. She is keeping a cool head and focusing on the plan.

Max and Sydney have never seriously fought each other, but Max did have a problem with Sydney's shield early on, so I'm not sure she could beat Sydney. I also don't think either of them would ever want to try, and that the only thing that would ever push Sydney into a killing mode would be a threat to Max. They have that strong sister-bond going for them. And I do wish that there had been some way to show people what Sydney did against those planet-wreckers.

Anton Schleef

You need to re-read my comment. I never said that Maxima would consistently beat Sydney, just that she's considered a more dangerous combatant. That comes from training and experience. Sydney has, unquestionably, far more combat power, she just lacks the training and experience to use it as well as Maxima can use hers. Further, Sydney can only use two orbs at a time. So, if she's flying she can either attack _or_ defend, not both. Maxima can absolutely take advantage of that if Sydney fails to find a good spot to go 'turret turtle'. Though, fighting those planet-wreckers probably did help her for fighting large-scale opponents, like battlecruisers, battleships, dreadnaughts, and the like, which are the few that Maxima may have difficulty with.

Yes, but most HFY stuff has non-humans as being very warlike, but cr*p at doing it, while humans are really good at it, but (as a result) more cautious about initiating it. Like much fiction it's a comment on real life.

Aaron Mauthe

You say that like there’s not a bunch of scenes in THIS webcomic of arcswat diplomatically or tactically outmaneuvering non-humans. I mean there’s literally a character who is sworn to be another character’s secretary because she got out-diplomated so hard she wound up in his service

Bottom Line: Earth ain't to be fricked around with....

As long as they have the option of sitting in a cell instead, Im okay with it. Mandatory labor for prisoners is an ethical issue. What's the difference between that and actual slavery? It gets ugly fast, especially in the US.
