Thank you for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

I calculated Max could cover 10 kilometers at Mach 10 in three seconds. And we all know how reliable my math is. Still, Max can move pretty fast.

More than one person pointed out that modern security cameras are actually pretty good. Not alien tech good, obviously, but all of my knowledge of security cameras comes from... well, TV. You know, famously accurate TV. And also a cheap security webcam I got like 10 years ago, not the kind that comes with a closed circuit monitor, one of the kinds you need local wi-fi and a smartphone for. It wasn't terribly good resolution, and got blown out by daylight easily. Honestly, I don't know why TV shows bother with all the "Enhance... enhance..." stuff since security cameras are so amazing these days. No, of course I know why security cameras on TV suck, to draw out the investigation and so that main characters can show their new technique for "Enhance... enhance..."

that is one well made sword

I am sorry but it is really hard for me to see what is going on in the last two panels. I think it is Ixah/Max sending the golem through the flame thing and towards an impact point? :/

Playwars

Maxima really has been cutting it close a lot on those timers. At one point she might slip up.

Michael Obert

Momentum is the best weapon there is, really

Nathaniel Morse

In the post-match interviews, "Ixah" lies, and says she went around the planet to build up momentum.

BJ

Just wanted a flying start for that stab.

Matthew Lambert

I'm still confused on if it has a mushroom shaped head, or if its head is a continual explosion that refreshes the shape.

Town Crier

She won't. It's a plot suspense thing. Of course, this also guarantees that she'll never arrive prior to the very last second. One needs to buy one's powers with the +1/4 Advantage "Unusable as a plot device", to remove this annoyance, but then one can arrive too late, so it is something of a trade-off.

"Sir Isaac Newton is the deadliest son of a bitch in space!"

TrixieTurner

Oy gevalt and we’re right back at it, I only pray we are close to finally being done with this maxima special.

TrixieTurner

She may as well have had a week to get back to the arena, don’t know why we had this cut in that ultimately means nothing.

Justaguy

Not sure that's 2 whole people any more. more like 1.9

Sir Butcher

I am 100% sure this will move the plot forward. If you know existence of Maxima and Ixah then you don't need to be a Deus-level genius to connect the disappearance of one to the appearance of the other one.

Richard Riley

Eventually someone will find Dave a "remedial speed-lines" class so they tell a story of something more than distortion. Until then we will just continue to admire his character art. ;)

JasonAW3

As it appears as though she covered a significant distance in less than 3 seconds, it appears as though she was traveling at a particularly high Hypersonic velocity, so, while the Kaboomoid may not have directly reacted to her impact, (velocity probably reduce from !ach 10 to about Mach 9.5) there should be significant knockback, and, if he IS a crystaline creature, he might be about to sing a familiar line from an old Patsey Kline song... "I go to peices...."

JasonAW3

I don't know... the weirder of that blade seems 'pretty well made', herself...

Greg Morrow

You had me at Hero System talk.

> I calculated Max could cover 10 kilometers at Mach 10 in three seconds. And we all know how reliable my math is. Your napkin math is correct there, M10 is around 3-3.4 km/s, so it would take around 3 to 3.3 seconds to cover that distance. Assuming we're talking M10 in Earth's atmosphere. Since actual Mach number depends on the atmosphere you're flying in, and the denser it is, the slower the Mach number is. So it is highly likely the Mach number would be different on whatever planet they currently are battling it out.

"Zoom and enhance... enhance... enhance- oh god, that's too enhanced, dehance"

Czarzhan

Few people on Earth are watching the arena fight. And few people in the galaxy are watching for Maxima appearances. Furthermore, not many people on Earth saw Max this time at all. Babezilla's first question when she wakes up will probably be "What hit me?"

Hugh Eckert

"SHANK" is a great sound effect.

I designed a campus wife security system. They’re not catching her going Mach 10 except by accident. At about 10 frames a second, and her crossing the frame in fraction of a second it’d be a miracle for even 1 frame to have. Blurry streak. And that assumes the lighting is good, the camera isn’t in low light model or binning to improve low light. In fact in lowlight she’s probably putting off so much IR from friction she’ll white out the entire frame.

Eric Loken

Thaaat's gonna leave a mark.

Okay - Channeling my inner Randall Monroe - at that speed, the sword and Maxima would both go *through* Zerathax, leaving a Maxima-shaped hole. She is very much a bullet - and one that is invulnerable so it doesn't even deform - and one with an eight-foot magical sword tip to pierce whatever he's made of. His holed remains wouldn't even pick up much kinetic energy in the collision - the parts of him in her path of travel would just vaporize into plasma, and the rest of him would mostly just be unaffected. maybe knocked over, a few seconds later by shockwaves. Mach 10 is scary fast, and invulnerable projectiles simply go through the things they are aimed at.... I'm reminded of the tank armor vs anti tank weapons, where a supersonic projectile of spent uranium simply goes *through* the tank, regardless of the armor composition. the tank doesn't get flipped, or carried along, it gets perforated. lol-ish.

Campus wife :) I love typos that almost make sense!

eddi_TBH

They literally don't know what hit them. The sonic boom still hasn't arrived.

eddi_TBH

The DP ignites and leaves a trail of flame in the interior. That's why it's used. The same effect as a shaped charge but worse. If the target is Russian built, the turret may flip from the secondary effects.

eddi_TBH

I think she is trying for a foursome.

eddi_TBH

I think it's a living plasma. Max spoiled it's integrity, but not enough to evaporate it. A clue for how to fight it.

eddi_TBH

Magic armor can take a dragon stomp. But the acceleration made gooshy goo out of the contents.

eddi_TBH

Sufficiently advanced technology or magic? Given the owner is Xuriel, both.

LucasTheLost

Having one's center of mass pierced might not be all that much of a problem for a golem. Being pierced by a spell eater on the other hand will probably suck it dry shortly. Being smashed into a walking mountain's leg might be pretty rough too.

Hephaestus Hugh

a 100 kg object at highway speed, 100 km/h, has only about 39,000 joules. Mach 10 gives it roughly 15,000 times more energy because energy increases with the square of speed. Assuming Mach 10 = about 3,430 m/s—using the speed of sound at sea level—the kinetic energy is 588 megajoules, equivalent to roughly 141 kg of TNT. That is comparable to the explosive energy of a substantial aerial bomb, although an impact behaves differently from an explosive. The energy is concentrated along the object’s path and is spent crushing, heating, fragmenting, ejecting material, producing shock waves, and accelerating debris. At Mach 10, vaporization becomes quite plausible.

eddi_TBH

The armor, being magic, may be resistant to even extraordinary impacts. Not resistant enough in this case. But it may be partly intact, even if the contents aren't.

Robert J Headley

Shanks Zerathax thru Kaboomoid, into the leg of Mt. Atrocitous. At the speed of Mach Jesus. Very impressed.
