Thank you so much for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

I've been working from home for the past 15 years, drawing this lovely comic for you guys, and I haven't had to deal with rush hour traffic in all that time, (outside of some poorly timed errands and whatnot) but I still firmly believe that people who drive down to the end of the merge lane when everyone else has already merged then forcibly nose their way in, thereby causing 80% of the actual traffic, deserve their own holocaust.

If you're a geologist, and have opinions on what a cored out section of igneous mountainside should look like, or have other observations on the physics of what's happening on this page, well, now is your time to shine. Why Maxima decided on this approach vs just a really huge energy beam, who knows? Despite all the energy blast variations she can do, maybe her super petajoule shield buster beam always looks like the one she used on the Fel carrier, and the galaxy knows what that looks like. Also this does have its own cool factor to it. And despite probably being the first weapon* ever used, throwing a rock can still be an effective tactic against high-tech opponents, an archmage, a demon, a whole army, or even a Death Star. It's just a matter of scale, and/or velocity. Okay, the archmage would probably have the best chance against that sort of thing, but the nice thing about rocks is that they come in all sorts of sizes, and they're just laying around for free. A boulder the size of a house? Probably not a game-ender on the archmage. If you can throw an entire mountain? That would certainly scale the defensive mana expenditure at the least.

*Like a tool based weapon, not claws or teeth or an aggressive pseudopod.

A classic trope is the highly technological advanced entity with extensive shielding against energy attacks being totally unprepared against something as basic as a thrown rock. Exhibit #1701: Picard wasting some Borg drones using a Tommy gun.

DakkaDakkaWAAGH

Yes, Western Australian drivers, we're looking at you here!

Hamish Clarkson

My brain is telling me the straight to camera bit is a reference and I can't remember what to.

Michael Obert

Well, Disastar has been a bore, so time for Max to do some boring of her own I guess. Pays to not be the screaming guy sometimes.

Donald Smith

Driving down to the end of the merge lane IS a proper zipper merge, though. That's why it's called a "zipper" merge, and not an "at any point as long as it's BEFORE the zipper" merge. The ones who merge before the end are the people actually causing traffic to build up, even though merging early "feels" right.

Ebonbolt

There's also a variation on the trope: shielding against energy as well as high-velocity matter (most kinetic attacks). This, of course, has no effect on the mountain gently dropped on one's head. Splat.

Magraal

Perth drivers do not understand that the on-ramp is used to *accelerate to the speed limit* before merging. They always try to merge at 20 below, and don't see how they are the ones causing ALL of the problems. The entire rest of the state has lovely drivers (aside from a few really shit truckies doing the coast runs), but Perth has the worst the state can offer.

Anton Schleef

That is statistically, and provably, false. First off, a proper zipper merge is when vehicles _*ALTERNATE*_ in merging, so one from the left lane, one from the right lane, one from the left lane, one from the right lane, and so on. Second, I'm a former trucker, and to even things out I _*HAVE*_ straddled the lanes once I was past the "Merge" sign, even if it was a significant distance from the 'Merge Point' and watched things shift from being Stop and Go Traffic to Continuous Movement Traffic, even though there were vehicles in _both_ lanes ahead of me. Oh, and I've done that going past the cops and they _*NEVER*_ came after me, even though it would be easy to do since the traffic was slow. Note: This was only done when heading into construction zones, not for merging lanes elsewhere. So, yes, assholes like you who pass everyone in the merging lane to skip most of the line _*ARE*_ the source of the problem. After all, you force a vehicle to brake for several seconds to let you in where you are trying to _cause_ an accident by failing to yield (the merging lane is _required_ to yield to the other lane, though blocking them from merging is also a moving violation), and _*every single vehicle behind them has to brake for 1 more second than the vehicle ahead of them.*_ After a few dozen vehicles this guarantees that eventually every vehicle has to come to a complete stop, instead of allowing for a steady, if slow, flow of traffic, which is the intention of the zipper merge. Before you try spouting your bullshit "Me First! Because Only I Matter!" attitude about merging again, try checking with your local law enforcement, because you are definitively in the wrong. Oh, and I've seen assholes like you get pulled over by the cops for being a hazard on the road because of using the merge lane to pass other traffic. It's especially fun when the cop is chasing you down that merge lane with their lights on. EDIT: Did a line-break in correctly and accidentally posted it prematurely.

Donald Smith

I don't know if you know what "statistically" means, but for some ACTUAL statistics, try this (https://www.acg.aaa.com/connect/blogs/4c/auto/zipper-merge-keeps-traffic-moving) or this (https://www.modot.org/zipper-merge), which have the studies linked in their footnotes. Also, calling proper merging technique "me first behavior" is rich coming from a guy who admits to blocking traffic because people weren't following your personal preferences. You might need to take a defensive driving class.

RadioDoc

That's not just Perth drivers, the mouth breathers in Arizona do that as well. 75mph on the highway, let's jump on at 55-65mph because playing chicken with 80,000lb semis is fun.

Michael Strödick

While I agree with your comment, I do think, Dave meant a specific type of merger. There are the ones that overtake all the driver on the main road and then force their way in. Often those driver use the very last moment to merge without letting the traffic have the time to react. If you want to merge the right way you have to reduce the speed to that of the main road and merge at the last point. Doing just one of those things leads to more traffic jams.

Jay Maynard

You must live in Minnesota! Nobody here knows how to zipper merge, and they get furious when someone does it the right way.

Killianti

The problem that I see is that drivers tend to favor one of the merging lanes over the other as if the other lane is somehow bad, but the two lanes are supposed to be equal. There aren't a main lane and a merging lane; there are just two merging lanes.

Greg Morrow

Zipper merge also requires the people in the lane to leave space for the people merging. It takes a lot of cooperation. And people who see other people merging badly, especially if they are "cheating", are less likely to be cooperative. Big trucks smooth out traffic flow, because they do not speed up/slow down to anything like the extent of car drivers. Rapid speed changes increase turbulence, which makes the phase transition from flow to stop-and-go occur at higher speeds.

Teksura

The nice thing about throwing a massive chunk of stone around is that it takes an insane amount of energy to actually destroy that much stone. So depending on maneuverability, it may be harder to counter assuming it can't simply dodge it. Max may have figured that a physical projectile will do better than an energy projectile.

Andrew Diseker

We all have our genocide-inducing pet peeves.

William Elliott

"Will, did you just throw an asteroid?" "Goddamn right I did"

Town Crier

Heartily agree! Death to all who tailgate and don't have the courtesy to leave at least two to three car lengths behind the car in front, so that others may merge.

Kevin Wright

Yeah, no. Hauling butt past the stopped traffic and then forcing your way in is called "zoom and cut" and is a jerk move. to be fair, as noted above, actual zipper merging requires the folks in the lane being merged into to not be nose-to-tail.

Stephen Gilberg

Did Disastar omit a comma, or is he telling people to flee the cowards?

Raymond Dannelly

There's also a matter of tuning. The shield can deal with energy. The shield can deal with large projectiles. But can it deal with both at the same time?

Elbert van Barreveld

People who don't know how to zipper merge: F*ck them. You got 2 types: 1. Ones that don't drive to the end and just squeeze themselves in the other lane. 2. The onese that wait till the #1 are gone, then race to the end and ram it into the other lane. For those that wonder how it is done: Once you see the "merging lanes" sign: -Slow down to a maximum of 5km/h difference with the other lane. (preferably 0km/h but sometime a bit of a difference keeps the #2 from honking on your ass when you pas a #1). -You use the time find a spot on the other lane to ride alongside. When you see the arrows on the floor (last couple of meters). : -You start using your indicators. You don't immediatly merge. -You imagine a point on the middle of the other lane, on the same spot that the merge ends. -You take it there in a straight line. Which means you slowly change lanes. -Once your on the other lane. You switch of your blinkers.

Elbert van Barreveld

From the moment you see the "merging lanes" sign, you start driving the same speed as the other lane. You pick a spot an use your indicator. But you don't merge tille the end. You do not race to the end to surpass all other cars! Take-overs are practically not an option ones you pass the merging lanes sign. I always use the entire merging lane. That's to enhance the flow of the total traffic. Because if i don't. Dipshits will race past me , ram themselves in the other lane and cause a brake wave. And that's the goal. No brakes necessairy, just a smooth experience for everybody.

Richard Riley

I'd have sworn an earlier comic said that Max wasn't going to use her energy beam, as another way to avoid being recognized.

Aaron Mauthe

I sense the author may be attempting to communicate with the audience. But whatever might the message be?

He Who Must Drink Some Coffee

Y know, this brings up something that bugged me from early in the comic. At some point in one of the very early strips, someone tells the ARCHON heroes not to bother picking up cars and beating enemies over the head with them, because "if you're strong enough to do that, then you'll hit harder with your fists than with some improvised weapon." This went against 150,000 years of human experience. Picking up a rock or a stick and hitting something with it is a force multiplier. That's not going to change because of super strength. Not only does using a weapon add to the leverage and impact of a blow (not that kind, Dabbler), it also means that you're less likely to hurt your own fists. Having the strength to pick up, let's say an elevator car and use it as a flail (Hulkbuster vs Hulk, Age of Ultron), will still be more effective than a super punch alone. That's something that always bothers me about Superman. Okay, so you're basically invulnerable. That's no reason not to take advantage of the environment and use any weapon you can. Super sportsmanship just makes the fight drag out longer and puts more bystanders at risk the longer it goes on. Yes, you have to buy a guy a new car afterwards. That's what hero insurance is for.

He Who Must Drink Some Coffee

I assume this is a reference to the Ewoks. Ewoks are the one thing that makes me say, "You know, maybe the Galactic Empire isn't all bad..."

Churchill (formerly TeaBear)

Or the ONLY attack which has proven 100% effective on Borg drones... Worf armed with a Mek'leth.

Dan Jones

For the archmage, it may be even more effective to go smaller rather than larger. A bullet is just a specific type of thrown rock.

JasonAW3

I would say, "Put a tack into him, he's done," but Max seems to already have done that

Orlet Soir

Yes, pick a spot that interleaves the traffic, match speed, then merge at the end of merging lane. This gives the driver behind your merge spot time to give you space in a smooth and controlled way, without causing excessive braking waves behind. It does take two to tango in this scenario. Unfortunately, too often at least one of the sides fail to tango and cause a traffic jam.

JasonAW3

Yeah, the other day I was trying to zipper merge into traffic, with turb signal on for at least 10 seconds, and some idiot in a new puckup truck, was deliberately in my blind spot. I caught enough of a glimpse of himself i tried to merge to avoid an accident, but I almost needed the "brown pants".

Carlos

Or being shielded against lasers and kinetic weaponry... and then getting gutted with a knife moving slowly.

NickPG

The Lord Kitchener 'Your Country Needs You' poster perhaps?

Louis Richards

The problem with your argument is that for beings like Superman, Hulk, Thor, etc. just about any normal object/weapon is softer and more delicate than their fists. I specify 'normal objects', because items like Mjolnir, Stormbreaker, Captain America's shield, etc. ARE durable enough to cause more damage than their fists alone. Hitting someone with a baseball bat does more damage than your fists, yes. but if the only "stick" available is the cardboard tube from a roll of wrapping paper... your fists do more damage, your 'weapon' is a nuisance.

Louis Richards

And the faster you can throw it, the better.

He Who Must Drink Some Coffee

I think you're ignoring the factor of proportion. Yes, I might be able to bust a branch in two, but busting it over someone's head is still going to hurt them more than me. And proportionally, if I'm strong enough to swing a car at someone, that's going to do more damage than my bare fist. The superheroes you mentioned have, again with the notable exception of Supes as far as I remember, all been seen in their movies using improvised weapons. Hulk turned a car into brass knuckles to punch the Abomination. Thor used a big steel pole as a quarterstaff against Hydra troops (after throwing his hammer at something else). Proportionally this is the equivalent of using a baseball bat. My career, from which I just recently retired, trained us that in a physical confrontation, you use anything you can get your hands on. A clipboard might break after one hit, but it's still one hit that didn't hurt you. Throw a coffee cup. It might just sting a little, but it will cause a flinch reaction that can be taken advantage of- either to escape or to follow up with another attack. I'm going to repeat myself: humans have been doing this for all our history as a species. It's a genetic imperative. If you're fighting for survival, you use everything you can. That could only be moreso if you're fighting another superpowered enemy.

Cha0sniper

Callum Wells the Paranoid Mage would definitely agree with you on the efficacity of large rocks even against magic users lmao

Nestor Rodriguez

I'll take the Ewoks over Jar Jar Binks any day and twice on Sunday.

Eric Loken

I always sigh when I hear people declare the drivers in this town (whatever this town happens to be) are the worst drivers in the world. When everyone is saying it about their town or city - you never hear anyone talk about how great drivers are in a specific location* - you realize that bad drivers are universal. In this comic it is stated that they are literally universal, as in across the universe. * I did know a guy who tried to claim drivers in another place were so superior using an example of a car losing control and swerving through the middle of busy traffic on a multi-lane highway/ freeway and everyone deftly avoiding a collision. This example is almost certainly not an example of skilled drivers but rather: A. blind luck (it was luck not skill that avoided a pileup), or even more likely B. utter bullshit (the story was very likely pure fiction)

eddi_TBH

Max is making sure her energy blast looks like a secondary power. Useful if used creatively but not the ultimate weapon.

eddi_TBH

Frank Herbert came up with a real challenge for swashbucklers. Who normally depend on lightning fast attacks.

MewMew!

ESP. RUBBERNECKERS!!!! THOSE ppl Also deserve to be hung by their privates with PIANO WIRE!!!

Stop, look, and listen baby, that's my philosophy
