Thanks so much for your support! For serious!

I came up with Deus's comment that "Evil always has the advantage of being more proactive" as I wrote this page and I think it's probably true, because I think there's a limit to how proactive 'good' can be. I don't think 'evil' has a limit, really. All of the tortures Deus mentions are utterly horrific - the Blood Eagle, where someone skins your back, then cuts away all the muscles, then breaks your ribs and pulls your lungs out so you suffocate while in bowel evacuating agony is by far the kindest one on that list. (Crucifixion doesn't sound that bad, but it takes days to die from it. I imagine the Blood Eagle could be drawn out to some degree, but... look, torture is bad, m'kay?) The Holocaust, all the shit Japan did to China during and before WWII, even just 90% of what happens during any war. There's no limit. Actual demons have probably never invaded Earth cause there's nothing left to teach us.

But for 'good?' You can lock your door at night, making it slightly harder for someone to rob you. If we assume they try your door, then immediately give up and go home, then you've proactively prevented 1 unit of bad. It doesn't increase the units of good, but arguably, preventing an increase in bad is, in itself, good. Chances are the burglar doesn't stop at the first locked door, so they go to your neighbor's house and find an unlocked window and rob them. So you start a neighborhood watch. That's proactive. But it's a big neighborhood and you only have 12 volunteers and the robberies continue unabated. So you buckle down and eventually figure out who it is, but you don't have proof and the cops can't get a warrant to check out his house so you... confront him? Break into his house and try and steal back everything he stole? Break his hands with a hammer? Set his house on fire? Kill him?

Obviously most of those are wild overreactions, but for the sake of brevity, you can imagine an escalation that leads to a level of proactivity that crosses the line from 'good' to 'not so good.' But that's my point, I think good has limits. Preventative medical checkups are good. The world of GATTACA? Probably not great? Especially as it was presented segregating humans into the GATTACAs and the GATTACAn'ts.

'Good,' in my opinion, also requires more work. If you want to walk across the hall to another apartment and beat up your neighbor, that's pretty straightforward. If you want to prevent your neighbors from beating each other up, you're stuck patrolling your entire apartment complex/neighborhood.

I think a lot of supervillains can be categorized as individuals who cross the line into proactive goodness. Ecoterrorists like Poison Ivy or Sam Jackson's character from Kingsman. Humans are killing the Earth so kill a significant percentage of the humans. Problem solved. Humans have proven time and again they can't govern themselves without descending into corruption and abuse, therefore I will govern them whether they want me to or not. Problem solved. Etc.

Of course, while some behaviors are pretty clearly good or evil, there's a mass of complexity in between. If you really want to prevent that guy from robbing his neighbors, you could achieve that by eliminating desire. Arguably bad. You could also eliminate or at least minimize poverty. That's almost definitely good as the majority of crime is in some ways motivated by poverty. But then what are we really talking about, communism? And how do you prevent the pigs from being more equal than everyone else, leading immediately back to haves and have nots. Maybe you eliminate scarcity. That's... probably good? Right? But that involves an overhaul of economics entirely, as well as tech and resources we don't have yet. Who knows what new problems could arise from such a dramatic paradigm shift?

Ultimately, Deus's point is that super powers are likely going to magnify humanity's... humanity. Sitting back and hoping the world won't become a lot worse is negligent.

On a serious note, "Curse words based on female genitalia" would be the bluest of blue chip stock ever.

I would imagine the most pressing issue is that you dont have to be one of the evil people in that super world to cause a lot of problems, some thug could victimize the wrong person and set an otherwise good/decent person on a path to vigilante justice that would leave the Punisher going "whoa man, that's taking things a little far, okay?". So even for people in that future with good intentions, shit's gonna keep going sideways from time to time only with a vastly inflated bodycount, potentially.

Well, I mean, Deus has those matter-assemblers cranking out equipment parts and construction supplies full-time. Wasn't that the impetus in the Star Trekiverse for global reform of humanity? The elimination of scarcity makes for the chance for poverty and infighting over resources vanish, along with an abundance of energy, and next thing you know humanity can experience a second Renaissance and honestly reach for the fleeting concept of "World Peace". I guess I can hope...

Speaking as someon who gets the "boat, milk and honey" reference, yeeeaaaaahhh, that's not really a point in our favor on the intergalactic PR stage. Humanity has come up with some seriously messed up shit. heck, look up "human skin lampshade".

I feel we are about to have insight into Dave's opinion of the 2nd amendment...

Can I request that next time you do a Max pinup, you use the same pose as in the last panel there, please?

I recently discovered an author called AiLoves on Literotica moving a series called "Becoming a monster" on there who is a fan of your work. Her character is running around in a Mighty Halo T-shirt.

Justaguy

The problem with humans, is all the humans.

I’m not sure if it’s evil being proactive, but rather good and neutral being much more passive and frankly not caring as long as their personal needs have been met. Maybe it’s combination of both with evil expecting the vast neutral crowd to be that passive as long as their personal needs are met.

Thisguy

People who are more likely to do bad things will start doing bad things as soon as they get the power to do so without consequences. That’s what gives evil the edge. Yes, I suppose that’s being proactive. The “good guys” problem is that there is a very very thin line between proactive peacekeeping and totalitarian law enforcement.

Aaron Mauthe

Please don’t combine the words “blue” and “female genitalia” in the same sentence ever again. 🤣🤣🤣🤢

The greatest villains are those who think they are heros. The warped sense of self defense/defense of the group, is very very powerful. On the opposite side though people love to reference the Joker's one bad day speech, but ignore that most crimes are prevented by the fact that people have empathy and don't mess with other. how many times have you left your phone out on a restaurant table unattended or used a cheapo lock on a public locker? evil is only ever gray and never black and white.

BearWithBoots

Glad to see the boat execution mentioned. That one is just long and is one of the worst ways to be executed.

Stephen Gilberg

The word hes looking for is "scaphism." Thanks a lot, "Tales of Monkey Island." Speaking of words, "reprehensively" should be "reprehensibly." I take some relief in the lack of proof that some of these tortures were ever done in reality. Still, someone was warped enough to come up with them. My idea of proactive good is charity. And invention.

I suspect that Deus maybe on the opposite track than what Max is thinking. While having a LIMITED number of Supers in the world might be a good idea, too many could lead to extinction. He means to figure out a way to either suppress or eliminate some supers that are, how shall we say, problematic?

James

From the commentary: "Ultimately, Deus's point is that super powers are likely going to magnify humanity's... humanity. Sitting back and hoping the world won't become a lot worse is negligent." But before that, "Humans have proven time and again they can't govern themselves without descending into corruption and abuse, therefore I will govern them whether they want me to or not. Problem solved." So, at least now we know what sort of villain Deus is being cast as, when the conflict comes. And why. (Still hate Deus, though.)

Good, Bad, He has a valid point. She’s got a valid question regarding it however.

The third thing you need to do is have actual accountability. The wealthy, those in power, those with power (i.e. the police), and those in the dominant group are held to different levels of accountability than those that aren't in any of those groups (and just being part of the dominant group is less beneficial than being wealthy). This needs to stop. If people can get away with crimes simply because they are wealthy or know the right people, then there will never be justice. And what is more the a-holes below them see it as a justification for their own bad behaviour; "well gee, if the president does it, I don't see why I shouldn't!" And I guess there is a fourth, and this one is going to really piss off a certain group of people. The notion of individual liberty being more important than society is simply wrong. That isn't to say that anything in the name of :"the Greater Good" is right, because it most definitely isn't (this is where Deus is going with his nonsense). It isn't also to say that the individual can be steamrolled for the good of society, that is not just either. What it is to say, is this notion of "muh freedums!" that has spread out of the U.S., where someone can be as big an a-hole as they want to everyone else because "it is their right" is one of the three biggest problems in the U.S. (along with unfettered capitalism and systemic prejudice). There should be reasonable limits on peoples actions and speech in the interest of public welfare - note I said *reasonable* limits, and before any right winger starts complaining might I point to how the right seems to think that they get to decide what a woman does with her body, who someone should be able to love, how someone should be able to worship, what someone gets to say about the country, and many other things that are NOT reasonable limits. And if that means people should wear a mask to limit spreading a virulent disease, or get a vaccine shot, then no, they don't have the 'right' to say no. It is hilarious that the same people who think the government mandating vaccines is horrible, feel it is the government's right to say whether a woman can get an abortion or not. I'd also like to get rid of organized religion, but I know that won't happen. People need their superstitious beliefs to cope. (hm, the post with the first two points seems to have disappeared... or been deleted)

The number of supers is relevant only as a statistical likelyhood. When a single super can exterminate a planet, and it could be *anyone*... If Max was truly evil, she could kill every human on Earth in a day. (Yes, I know Max isn't *exactly* a super, but is the best example of that power level we know about in the Grrlverse) More supers simply means a greater chance of losing that lottery. Deus will have to be frighteningly proactive to address the single greatest threat that super powers present.

(edit: God my english is horrible.) Having a powerbase and a law enforcement, already set up with laws and guidlines on how to proceed in place when it is needed. That is what is sort of comming, that -i- am guessing he is aiming for. After all, if people or goverments feel supers are too dangerus outside of under their thumbs, they will move to resolve that. Odds are that dangerus, or suposedly dangerus powers/people will probably get afected real negative like. The posebiletys are/may have more weight to it then the actual persons actions. I think of the mutant "terror" in marvel, got to keep the dangerus people down after all....(people reason one hopes, but some do/will not use reason) So, inocent people on both sides are in really high risk of both valid and not valid reactions and conseqeces, ontop of basic human crime nature.

furry

forgive me for my horrible english, please. lol

If one doesn't have superpowers, one can buy their equivalent. That's Deus' goal I think. I wonder how much energy it would take to actually wound Max. Given alien tech, would it be man-portable? Even concealable?

Curse words based on genitalia comes from those religious suppressors of what all thinking species are best at, mate, spawn and die while making the environment suit your needs. From the dumbest ant to the greatest ape, we life forms think about food, shelter, sex and facilitating relationships to make getting those things easier. Wolves were respected foes before we decided to twist their species with selective breeding. I sincerely hope Deus doesn't go down this path. I am going to try not to use genitalia or other body parts as curse words for a bit to see just how often I am using (almost) everyone's favorite bits as pejoratives.
