I had such a fascination with pirates when I was a kid. Up until middle school my costume of choice for Halloween was a pirate. In 6th grade, for our English class, we got to choose a book to read and then write an essay about it. My book of choice was Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. While working in music retail, the manager of the store one day opened up a CD by Jimmy Buffet called Barometer Soup and played it in the store. I became a fan. Many of Buffet’s songs revolve around the life of a pirate. His fans are collectively known as Parrotheads. And then this movie came out, and my fascination with pirates was reignited. Jack Sparrow became the quintessential pirate to me. I loved his swagger and his pirate drawl. And when our town’s high school principal called me to ask if I could DJ the homecoming parade, and she told me the theme was SpongeBob Square Pants, I had another chance to dress up as a pirate. I tried finding a Jack Sparrow costume, but had no luck. So I did the best that I could…and I had a blast. Can’t wait to see your reaction to this movie. I hope you enjoyed your voyage through The Caribbean Seas on The Black Pearl as much as I did!

Looks like another double feature night in this arctic tundra and I in no way is that depressing 😃

I really really enjoyed this watch! This movie is so much fun in every aspect. I think Johnny Depp was born to play Jack Sparrow and I don't think anyone could have pulled it off as well as him..he just fits it perfectly in my opinion. I just love the music, story line, acting and the comedic, fun aspect of it all. I think they knocked this movie out of the park. So well done! So, thank you miss Kate for another wonderful adventure! I get a bit lost sometimes watching along with you because it really does sometimes feel as though we're watching along with a good friend and laughing, at the same time, at all the same parts. Great fun and good times! I do hope you continue on with the rest of this series, you won't be disappointed I'm sure. I'll be looking forward to whatever comes next though. See ya soon 💜

No porkies, Kate…this was one of the most amazing times I’ve had watching a movie with you! I’ve always loved this movie, but man, you put it on another level for me tonight. And the cake topper was your inopportune timing to take a sip from your mug 🤣. Thank you 🙏 Johnny Depp is absolutely fantastic in this role. I don’t know of another actor who could have given Jack Sparrow his signature mannerisms other than the man who he modeled the character after…the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. Depp felt that pirates were the rock stars of their era, and chose this one iconic musician to create an iconic Hollywood buccaneer. In your intro you mentioned that Hans Zimmer composed the score. Well…yes and no. Zimmer was asked to compose the score for PotCar, but he was already committed to composing the score for another one our favorite movies, The Last Samurai 😁. So Zimmer referred another composer named Klaus Badelt to compose the score, while Zimmer served as the music producer. He eventually wound up writing much of the score along with Badelt, but Badelt is credited as the main composer. I noticed the charm on your necklace looked very much like the gold medallion from Cortez’ treasure right at the beginning of your reaction. And I was hoping you’d realize it before your outro comments…you certainly know how to accessorize for the occasion. This movie is one of the reasons I’m so sad that Disney has fallen into the funk that it has with many of the films they have released over the last several years. Disney did epic, action packed adventure movies so right at this time, and Pirates of the Caribbean is one of their crown jewels. I can’t wait for you to get to PotCar: Dead Man’s Chest.

I really enjoyed watching your reaction to this! On a personal connection to something in the film, the ship which they used to portray the HMS Interceptor, which is the one that Jack steals with that switcheroo, is actually an American "Tall Ship" called the Lady Washington, which was a replica built in 1989, as close to the specifications of the original ship of the name, built in the 1750's, starting out as a single-masted sloop. Originally she was a merchant vessel that also served as a privateer during the American Revolutionary War. She was later refitted as a two-masted brig before her voyage to the Pacific Northwest of America in 1787 and was the first American flagged ship to visit the West Coast of North America. In 1791, the original Lady Washington was the first American-flagged vessel to visit Japan and attempt to open trade, 62 years before Commodore Mathew Perry entered Tokyo Bay in 1853 with his US Navy squadron. The original Lady Washington was also the first American-flagged vessel to visit Honolulu and Hong Kong. The Lady Washington replica is home ported in Aberdeen, Washington. Over the years, she has sailed up and down the West Coast, visiting ports mostly in Washington, Oregon and California, as a training ship to educate sailors and to provide public education about sailing, give tours and provide the paying public with opportunities to experience sailing on a real sailing wooden Tall Ship. I live on the Oregon Coast, and I began sailing aboard her back in 2004, the year after she was used in the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl film, and I have had the opportunity to sail aboard her many times over the years. To be used in the film, she had to be sailed down the West Coast of North America and through the Panama Canal to the filming locations in the Caribbean, specifically around St. Vincent and the Grenadines. After filming wrapped, she had to sail back through the Canal again and back up to Washington State. She is currently undergoing a major overhaul and refitting and should be sailing on her normal West Coast circuit in the next few years. Below is a link to a video I made during my first sail aboard Lady Washington in 2004. Hope you get a chance to watch it. Looking forward to your next reaction! https://youtu.be/SG-pq9ku0gA

Always a delight to watch a movie with you, Kate. :)

You mustn't wait too long to watch the other two for the original trilogy. They are brilliant as well. You could wait a bit on 4 and 5, but the next two are so good.
