Great film! Eerily poignant right now as well 😬 Looking forward to your reaction Kate! Have a great weekend!

This one will be tough for me to watch. I've seen it before and it's a good flick, but as a resister it's very close to home.

I like that you don't tell us what's coming. It makes it always a pleasant surprise. And this is one of my favorites. The graphic novel was written as a critique of Thatcher/Reagan and the AIDS epidemic. The movie was released during the Bush/Blair era when there was new scary flu every other day. It's apropos to any time period because the human race suffers from crippling amnesia and never seems to learn the big generational lessons.

Remember, remember the 5th of November the gun powder reason and plot. I see no reason the gun powder treason should ever be forgot.

Outstanding choice! This is certainly one of the most thought-provoking and chilling films of the 21st century. V's line about his mask being his true face instead of the flesh and bone beneath really stuck with me. I love that John Hurt was cast in the film. Hurt starred in the film version of 1984 (released, appropriately, in 1984), which makes an excellent companion piece to V for Vendetta. I hope you can react to that one someday as well. (And if you haven't already seen it, Children of Men [2007] is another great one in this vein.)

This will be a first time watch for me. I don’t know anything about this movie other than it stars the ever so beautiful Natalie “Padme” Portman and the brilliant John Hurt ( if you haven’t seen it yet, I hope you will watch The Elephant Man sometime on the channel…such a beautiful film). You look very pensive in the thumbnail photo. I’m thinking that I’ll need my thinking cap on, and I should be prepared to be mentally exhausted after this watch. K for Katch ya lata, Kate.

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it is my very good honor to meet you, and you may call me V. I would love to see a recording of the writing process for this monologue, because… the vapor of this varnished vehicle leaves my mind virtually vacated.

I think there was a TV series of this as well??

This a wonderful movie. And yes it is Orwellian in scope. I find it interesting to see that the writers used a pandemic, and the fears of the people to grab power and freedoms away from the people. That’s 15 years before Covid. Governments throughout the world used the pandemic to limit freedoms. Regimes learned something from this event, and it does not bode well for the future. I have also learned that from the beginning of history those who speak against the regime are terrorists, and that every government whether autocracy , theocracy, and monarchy tell their subjects The reason they do what they do is to keep their citizens safe. This reminds me of the struggle of the Iranian people who have lived a nightmare since 1979. I pray that they will be able to throw off their shackles and walk into the light . I think about the fight in England, through the Magna Carta in 1215, to give rights to the people, with ideas thateveryone’s home is their castle, that the tyranny of the Devine Rights of Kings must be abolished and that there must be a Parliament where the nobles and the common man can both be represented. This played such a big role in shaping the founders of our constitution. .The history of our world is crying out , “ Give me your tired and your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breath free. Thank you Kate this is an important movie , especially in the times we are facing. Thank you so much.

This is the first graphic novel that I read. It's such an amazing story, and the extended version of this film is just a bit more faithful, but like most graphic novel adaptations, longer is better, as it gives so much more time to adapt the material as it was in the novel. Watchmen is very like this. It's a brilliant film, but the extended edition is far better and I would highly recommend watching that, but also the long version. I'd recommend the both Novels for your reading list as well.

One other thought I had was how funny it is that these sorts of films are always labeling the bad guys as Conservative, Religious, blah blah. Meanwhile, the truth of the matter is that Nazi's weren't conservative, they were Socialists to start, and then Authoritarians that were led by a hateful, insane ideologue who turned the fears and worries of a dying country into permission to help them. But, in the end, they found themselves participants and victims in the heinous and hateful sins that live on through the decades and what will be the centuries. All of it comes from Marx. That man's ideas gave rise to Socialism, Communism, and then Authoritarianism, marked by a self-centered, self-congratulatory ruling class that sells the lie of equality to the masses while relying on their "Betters" to do right by them. All that really ends up happening is that the Elite are rich and lazy, those who notice and fight back are crushed underfoot, and the masses are still under the spell and are pointed in the other direction, and lies are whispered into thier ears in the sweetest voice. Until one day, the people begin to wake up, but their spirits and strength have been crushed so completely and their overlords so thuroughly armed and prepared for the uprising that there is not much to do but go on to get along, or give up the expectation of your long life, filled with the few happinesses that you're allowed in order to sacrifice yourself for the cause. These days, these people are a little more cunning. They have taken massive amounts of money and effort to convince people that the very things that have made the morality and structure of what made the West great to begin with are the very things that you should destroy if you're a decent person. Destroy God, raise yourself up in his stead, use your fear and confusion in the direction that you're pointed, and don't question the fact that you're a good person. Meanwhile, all of the freedoms and progress that we fought so hard to grow and cultivate are shown as the failures for which we should retreat. Back the same direction from whence we came, back in the segregations and the hatred and the control and they group think, under the influence of those elite overlords that pray to Marx and those people that have misled the same as he did, time and time again. How intelligent people keep being fooled by all this nonsense is insane to me, but it keeps happening. You talk about England and the horrors that are going on there. The invasion by the barbarian Muslim hordes, cheered on by the globalists who are seeking to stamp out the last remaining vestiges of Christianity and the greatest societies the world has ever known that Christianity built. They think they are so smart and yet, being people ruled by ideologies that are rooted in Atheism, they have no idea how commited a zealot of a death cult can be and how they have their own plans, for which they will use the useful idiots that fluff themselves in the mirror as they marvel at their own greatness, too deep in their own bullshit that they can't see those that would discard them the moment they reach their objective, lining up behind them to chop off their heads with the other infidels. If it were just the Muslims spreading their hateful cult, that would be bad enough, but right next to them are the Chinese and the other lovers of Communism. How much do people like Keir have to do to show that they are pawns of the Chinese than give away their strategic land to people under the very chinese thumbs that you say you're against and on top of the islands, they give you a boat load of the British tax payers money and a shiny new Embassy in the middle of London as a cherry on top. Then in the US, we have the "progressive" leftists acting as if they aren't being given money from China and the Islamists to encourage the simpletons of the left to fight back against laws their own politicians could've changed ages ago, but didn't because they need issues to get thier constituencies angry about so they can keep getting elected. Supported by the News media and the Hollywood Celebrities all over Instagram, parroting the same exact phrases, as if they weren't all represented by the same talent agency that gave them the talking points to begin with. Talking points they received from the same people that feed CNN and MSNOW their nonsense, while that same talent agency represents the elites of the left like the Obamas, the Clintons, the Bidens, Kamala an AOC. I mean, holy shit, if it wasn't for Covid, I'd still be one of the sheep eating this stuff up like my life depended on it. Sadly, once you're shown the Matrix, you can't unsee it. These people, sad as they are, are being moved around like inanimate pieces on a chessboard, pawns in a game that they have no idea is being played, even though they think they do. It must be something to see the top of an iceberg and not understand that most of it is underwater, where it can't be seen. Now people like me are sitting around in a cold, dank metal tube, picking at the holes in our arms where the tubes used to be hooked up, while we remember what our favorite Ruben sandwich tasted like before we realized it was never real to begin with. This film is the absolute truth, but it's not Christians or God, or wholesome convervatism that's the problem, it's the Marxists and the Atheists that tear down all that is good and decent in this world, leaving the bodies of wouldbe people, soulless, godless and lacking in all worth and morality, walking around like zombies looking for thier next brain to feast on. As a person who would consider myself a center-left sort of guy, what some would call a 90's liberal, I look at the world today and weep for the future, and I feel lost. Lost because I am a normal person with a measured view of the world, and yet everyone I see seems almost taken by this mind virus that robs them of their sense of self and their ability to form their own opinions based on the same truth and beauty that underlie Western civilization. Freedom to be what you want, to love who you want, and to also accept that there are laws, and just because I don't agree fully with them doesn't mean that they don't need to be enforced, simply because my team didn't win an election.

Kate as someone commented the 1984 film is a good one. Actually bleaker than this one, I think. Orwell seemed to think that a completely tyrannical state could be achieved. Technology makes it somewhat more likely, but I don't believe it, as the human always abides! Homage to Catalonia is also a book about disillusionment. Orwell hoped to find a political answer on the Left in Spain, fighting for the Spanish Republic. Instead he found the faction he was fighting with the P.O.U.M., a quasi Marxist and anarchist group, was being hunted and persecuted by their own co-fighters on the Left. Those were the Stalinist Left faction directed by Stalin to "liquidate" the P.O.U.M. Orwell was wounded in Spain and returned to England, a very disillusioned chap, but a more interesting and complex one, due to his experiences in Spain!
