I think you are both brave because this is a damn scary ass movie

FrancescoTakesItEasy

Hell yeah, I'm so excited for this one. Gotta wait a bit, though, cause this is strictly an "after dark" movie for me. Just doesn't work effectively when there's still daylight.

Den Radar Ryan

Wow! Lol I was just about to watch this on Prime then this pops up. Now I don't have to watch it alone. 👀📼📺🎧🤘

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Man the scariest thing about this is George’s new background change. Just kidding of course - it looks great! Anyway seeing this movie in pitch black theatre with loud Dolby sound back in late 2005 nearly produced crap in my pants at the time haha. Neil Marshall also directed Dog Soldiers which some people have recommended in the past and I’ll add to that. As for “descend” and “descent”: to descend is the verb; descent is the noun of having descended… yeah, English is weird and I’m probably wrong haha.

Chase Lonnergan

The last movie I watched that actually scared me. With this one done, I recommend the director's previous film: Dog Soldiers. Which is easily the best werewolf movie of the past 3 decades.

djKENTO

Descent is a noun. It’s the name of the act to fall down or go downwards. Descend is the verb the action of going down. You’d say “the descent into the cave was dangerous” and you’d say “I’m going to descend into the cave”. Hope that helps. <3

Chase Lonnergan

Descent is the noun form, and descend is the verb form.

Jay

Everything in the caves was shot in Pinewood Studios. That production team did some job.

djKENTO

HEADS UP! This is the unrated edition which is not legally available anywhere online to stream or purchase digitally. Luckily it’s 9 bucks on blu-ray on amazon right now. The Descent (Original Unrated Cut) [Blu-ray] https://a.co/d/iobshZv

FWPJR.

Never seen this, I’ll try to watch this since it’s you two doing it lol someone suggested that you should react to “The Wrestler” sometime down the line, and I agree with that person. It’s a great and very emotional movie. Plus I love professional wrestling and that’s another reason why I would really love watching you two react to it.

Garin

Love the heart rate monitor idea

JayF

To answer your question, George, I have had to do similar things at my former job as an Animal Control Officer but nothing nearly as claustrophobic as what they were doing. I've been down in sewers, crawlspaces, and such to get injured, sick, or trapped animals. I am NOT comfortable in those situations but keeping my focus on the animal got me through it.

Garin

Same! I'm sitting with my chair against a wall so nothing can sneak up behind me haha

djKENTO

Or I worked in the industry and don’t steal from people I consider my peers. Thanks! Also let’s not promote piracy on channels that don’t belong to us that literally have copyright issues all the time.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Yeah good point. I’ve had the twin disc UK and US release package in the ol’ collection for almost a decade and forget it’s hard to access for some 🤙🏻

E. D.

Imagine seeing a weird skull on the poster and not thinking the movie is about creatures in a cave. And by the way that heart rate thingy is either broken or simone has a lower heart rate during tense scenes than me while resting.

Hypnobob

Rented from YT (original UK version, which i think is the same as US unrated)

E. D.

you can find that version on lookmovie2.to (don’t know if I’m allowed to post this)

Jay

You'd have hated the US ending, George. It cuts to black when Sarah sees Juno in the car, implying she did make it out. Now you know why so many of us insisted on the UK version. It's such a great movie. Neil Marshall directed a couple of great GOT episodes (Blackwater, The Watchers on the Wall), but he hasn't made a good movie since this one. The film he made prior to this, Dog Soldiers, is a decent enough werewolf movie. There is a sequel to The Descent.... it's not very good:(

JediLounger

So if you guys are up for another really messed up female led science fiction/horror film, Annihilation (2018) is awesome. Not sure if it will win a poll, it did not do great at the theaters. I loved that movie so much I saw it twice in theaters, then I bought and read the books since it was unlikely the movie series would be finished. I also bought the 4K disc.

E. D.

George, the volume of your mic seems lower than Simone’s

E. D.

For a messed up female led horror I’d rather suggest Martyrs (2008), a canadian (quebecois) movie by the way.. fucked up but a pretty good movie actually

brismithejedi

I rarely watch full reactions because I just don't have the time, but I had to for this one. This was great! Thanks George and Simone

Tinfoilnation

So this is one horror/monster film I didn't much care for - not because it's not well made, but because when a film establishes the "rules" for its monster/poltergeist/whatchamakallit -- and then immediately starts breaking all those rules I just think to myself "Oh. One of *those* films where the writers will do whatever is most convenient to move the plot along" and kinda check out. This one does that time and again so... swing-and-a-miss for me.

Nathan Swapp

This movie helped fuel my fear of "the nameless things that gnaw the earth" as Gandalf put it when recounting his battle with the balrog.

Piep

the happy ending" she gets out of the cave" is the "cut" US version. thats why we wanted you to watch the UK version

China Andronicus

The husband definitely died as well. It showed the pipe go through his head.

Piep

So Simones heartrate was highest in THAT movie when you where talking about vagina? interesting ;)

Odd Thomas

Yay! The sequel is decent but not as good as one. I hope you watch The Conjuring too, it's one of the scariest movies ever made.

Odd Thomas

I second Annihilation. It doesn't have to win a poll, just get recommended a lot.

Odd Thomas

Talking of claustrophobia, the 2016 Blair Witch reboot has one of the best/worst scenes I've ever seen in a tunnel. Genuinely traumatic.

Patrick

Simone made me jump more than the movie did

MoonageDaydream

Man I have the UK version but can’t for the life of me get is synced up, your copy is a few minutes longer than mine. That sucks. Still gonna try and watch though

Mastervodo

Bloody chunks of flesh being torn out of living people's bodies? 67 bpm. Spelunking Vagina Holes? 91 bpm. Absolutely need to be putting a heart rate monitor on Simone for other movies.

Odd Thomas

Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie would be a good one to react to actually! It's great fun.

JokerDanny

Another great British horror movie is The Wicker Man, please react to it at some point, the original British version though not the crap American remake

Patrick

What did I miss at the end? The US version ends with Sarah in the car on the side of the road but I know there's another minute or so in the UK version with a different ending. Edit : nvm I found it on YT.

Patrick

The US version is on Amazon Prime streaming, the only difference is the ending which you can find on youtube.

BangDroid

I've never seen this one and first time watching along, but I have to say I'm really not impressed so far. The dialogue has been predictable and the use of cheesy well known, Foley effects makes it feel very B grade. The crash at the beginning was really poorly executed, and poorly communicated about who died. I can't with this movie haha, it's just so bad! The characters are all so unbelievable and the writing is lazy.

CJ

The sequel isn't necessary to watch but it provides a certain closure for the US version of the movie, since it's the 'cut' version. That's probably the only reason I'd recommend it. Thanks so much for reacting to this, guys! I want for nothing.

E. D.

The creatures remind me a bit of the creatures in the first Uncharted game.

E. D.

She getting away it‘s actually the US-ending? Typisch die Amis ;-)

REDR58

That’s the version I picked up this week from Amazon. Cheap and easily found and now it’s on my Plex server.

akaTheBARON Tokyo Drift

🖤Descent (noun) - downward drop. Descend (verb) - come down, go down, climb down, fall, etc. Had to Google it because I could hear either word on it's own and didn't notice they were two separate words. They're definitely related tho so there's that LOL.

Wyatt Nuxoll

When the creature was revealed , I thought simone was gonna leap out her chair and run out the room . Good job simone for hanging in there , George's excitement about the first look at the creature was great I knew he would be intrigued by the creature design . Another great movie reaction with my two favorite reactors. Can't wait to see the conjuring.

JBK405

I'm not a spelunker myself, but I've done a bunch of reading on the subject and the characters break SO many of the rules. But this isn't a criticism, because then these mistakes cause them so many problems even before the Crawlers show up. Due to this, they're losing supplies and getting lost and injuring themselves -- and are probably going to die -- even before the Crawlers show up. I love how Juno, despite being the most contemptible character (What with the affair and the lying and all that) is also the most badass one. She's the one who fights off the most Crawlers, she's the only one who makes a specific decision to not escape until she can rescue somebody else, etc. Perhaps it's an example of that old adage that tragedy brings out the best in people. She may have been self-centered and deceitful in the Normal World, but once it became Life Or Death she had to step up. Then again, it could just be continued self-serving actions since she wants to specifically get SARAH's forgiveness to assuage her own guilt over what happened.

Jesus F Christ

Requesting Magic Mike with heart rate monitors on both Simone and George.

REDR58

Hm. Just getting into the movie. The lighting in the cave when they first stop seems very *TV.* Unfortunate. Edit. Just finished. Looks pretty low-rent in a lot of places and some of the acting was pretty bad, though most of it was okay to good. Not really a fan of “everybody dies” with these sorts of movies. Makes me wonder what the point of it is aside from just “horror.” Meh. The poster seems to have been influenced by the photograph of Salvador Dali and the nude female models forming a skull, “Dali and Female (Nudes Skull)” (also part of the photo appears in the poster for “Silence of the Lambs”: https://posterwire.com/silence-of-the-descent/

Scott G

It's funny, the stupid American ending does just cut to black after she sees Juno in the passenger seat. The movie going back to her still stuck in the cave is literally the only difference. That's a MUCH better ending, but then they couldn't have made The Descent 2, which is terrible.

Chase Schleich

Her husband 100% died in that crash. They showed the pole going straight through his head and through the head rest of the drivers seat. One pole went through his head and the others went between the seats, killing the daughter in the back seat. Juno was having an affair with the husband as well.

Martin

Very frustrating. Another reaction ruined because the unrated version isn’t available to stream anywhere. I understand in many cases certain cuts are better than theatrical releases, but not everyone has access to these other cuts based on where we are streaming. Wouldn’t it be better to choose the version that everyone will have access to?

FranciscoGios

Having watched this movie in three different formats with three different endings. The first time she scapes but gets eaten with a monster being in the back of the car, the second time it ends with her having an Illusion that Juno appears inside the car, and this third time she’s still in the cave 🤔.

REDR58

It sounds like the ending where one of these things is in the back of the car is really stupid. How would it know how to get into the car? How would it know to even to bother to get into the car?

Martin

So the answer is to pick the version that many of us don’t have access to? Odd logic.

REDR58

I’m not sure how they possibly missed that. You could see it clearly piercing the back of the seat.

FranciscoGios

My guess the director or writers thought it was one of those “that’s a great idea, the viewer won’t be that smart; film it!!” 😂😂

JBK405

BTW there's a theory that some people have that there are no Crawlers at all, and it's actually Sarah killing all of her friends as she goes mad after being trapped. It's not super widely held (I don't believe it myself), but the theory goes that Sarah suffered a psychotic break after the accident and is on medication now for treatment. You do see her taking unspecified pills early in the film before they go caving. Since she thought this was going to be a quick one-day caving expedition through a known area she didn't bring her medication with her. When they were trapped her symptoms began manifesting, in combination with the paranoia and hallucinations that come with being trapped underground all on its own. Eventually she snaps and proceeds to kill all of her friends. That's why the Crawlers are completely absent at first, then show up only as vague backgrounds shapes and movements only she can see, before it transforms from Real Caving to Monster Movie. There's plenty of counter-arguments (For example, there's a few times where We-The-Audience see Crawlers in the background/shadows early in the movie, before Sarah notices them at all). But some people hold to this.

REDR58

That sort of thing has been done to death (pun intended), the bad guy or especially the monster being in the car for who knows how long until the victim/hero returns.

REDR58

The “happy”’or normal ending is fine. It’s beyond tedious to have the last surviving character imagining that she has managed to endure all that she did only to… not… is just a waste of time. Frankly, the idea that the bones being near an exit makes more sense than the crawlers having dragged them deep into their lair. The elk or deer or whatever else that is down there are large, bulky, heavy animals. Why (more importantly, how, exactly) did the crawlers get such large animals down and through such narrow passages? The kind of fake out ending we got in this version seems like it’s just here to be contrarian.

REDR58

What would make sense is for her to make it out alive and *not* see Juno there. Juno is clearly hobbled and not going anywhere so the moment you see her there it’s obvious it’s a fake out. The dream ending where she was really not doing anything, imagining the dead daughter and just sitting there is annoying and a waste of time. It takes away her agency.

Nikolai Brubach

They are just the Falmer from the Elder Scrolls games.

akaTheBARON Tokyo Drift

🖤All I can say, Simone, is you handled this movie via your heart monitor way better than when Zoe plays Fortnite. I think the highest I clocked you at was low 80's, but I've seen Zoe's HR well into the 100's XD

rafermadness

Descent is 1 of the most terrifying films I've ever seen. As a spelunker in Vancouver, damn. Totally unrelated suggestion: Jorgos Lanthimos, Patreon exclusive...b/c not YouTube lol. Maybe properly start a series on films/directors that are determined in their style? Anyways, been watching you guys for 2 years & you're awesome. Transferring to 30 Canada Internet points transcendent tier this coming week. Happy silly rabbit day 🫠

Dazzler & Em

By the same director, Dog Soldiers, which is a superbly silly, entertaining comedy horror. I can also confirm Piece of P### is a well used UK phrase. Really good reaction to a really good film.

Dazzler & Em

Like the idea of a heart monitor but will say the the reading got strangely calm at the scary moments and went high during comedy parts.

SpankTheMonk

Great movie to react to, ty for sharing. Since I don’t know where to say this, I will say it here. If you decide to watch the Ridley Scott’s Legend fantasy movie with Tom Cruise, I personally would recommend the directors cut. Normally I don’t see more value in directors cuts (except lord of the rings) but the reason I believe you should try for Legend’s directors cut is that Tim curry’s characters full reveal is most impactful for the directors cut- the theatrical throws it away in essence for reasons of audience familiarity and over explanation ( another studio decision). Sincerely

MasterElodin

A lot of the cave is shown in the movie to be huge vertical drops. The entrance could just be near one of those and they throw their food down there to eat it in peace cause nothing else can climb up and down those drops. Also this "tedious" ending gives the movie a more desperate/grim/helpless feel which is great because in my opinion the are way too many clean, sterile, happy ending movies.

BangDroid

Like I said in the first sentence, I was watching along for the first time. I used the word predictable because I predicted various lines of dialogue, c'mon use your head.

Piep

Because she started the film with a mental trauma, so nothing changed there its just that she escaped --> "Happy US ending"

Sckmnky

The whole Juno thing is she didn't kill her friend on purpose but why not attempt to help or tell others or put her out of her misery or at least stay with her or apologize. Who wants to die alone? She explicitly said not to leave her. She just ran away and that shows that she is chronically selfish. She tricked her friends into coming into the cave then claimed it was to name it after Sarah but no one believed that, including Sarah herself which is why when Juno was like "I was going to name it after you." Sarah was like "or after you."

Troy Ross

When I was 14 I got a job at a roadside tourist attraction called Linville Caverns, a small cave system deep into a limestone cliff in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina. After working there a couple years a family of spelunkers took me to a different cave a few miles away where I found myself belly crawling through a flowing stream into an increasingly narrow corridor. Two of the kids my age were in front and the father was behind me. Here's where I should mention that I was kinda a fat kid, big cornfeed country boy, 6'4" and 280 pounds at 16 years old. So I got stuck, wedged between the ceiling and the watery floor. Tried to wiggle forward and made it worse, started to get panicky and the dad pulled me back by my ankle. I then sat and waited on them to explore and pick me up on the way out. That was 30 something years ago. Random cave story!

DontTalkJustKiss

You should do the new 10-episode miniseries Shogun. It's fucking amazing.

Middy

I find the caving scarier than the creatures. They kinda look like generic video game mobs, but at least the action sequences are cool.

Middy

Ph4ZeD with the highest rated comment. Patrons know what's up.

Senec

Soon as I saw the drippy slimy stuff in the cave and heard the chittering, I was getting heavy Sons of the Forest vibes, and I absolutely loved the hell outta it.

Arnie Cox

George: One species, two species, both have four esses.

Diego

Totally agree. Cheating with her friend's husband is also another example on how she is super selfish.

Tenn Seven

Oh man, the version on Hulu that I watched along with had the crappy US ending (it ends the way George said would have been disappointing). Kind of bummed about that, but it was fun seeing your reaction! Also, imagine how bad it must have smelled in the “mess hall”!

brian burke

what is the heart monitor thing on the screen in front of simone? also how do you install that?

Gary Fixler

It's descend only if it's from the Descend region of France, otherwise it's just descent.

Eva Combs

Frist, Gary Fixler is correct. Second, George is a native English speaker (and I rate for some of the big English tests). Third, descend is the verb (I descended the stairs) and descent is the noun (We had a (rough) descent).
