Black Mirror: Season 1 Episode 3 & Season 2 Episode 1 - Patreon Version

Well, finally can actually talk about these episodes. I think anybody who has been cheated on in what you thought was a loving, long lasting relationship, can seriously relate to Season 1 Episode 3, The Entire History of You. As someone who also got borderline obsessive about finding the truth once I had the suspicion, I can just relate with this episode is so many ways. Once you feel like someone is cheating on you, you have to find out the truth. The technology aspect to this episode is also one of my favorite. The eye ball tech that allows you to just relieve moments in your life in exact detail over and over again is so interesting. I especially loved how they made everybody seem so completely self involved and utterly vapid. Like, they would literally sit around and watch just random clips and movies from times they had already lived before in their lives. Then you had them having sex, while using the eye tech to relive past encounters. I just think this episode is such great commentary on cell phones and social media and how we've allowed those two things to completely alter our lives in huge ways. Probably in my top 2 or 3 episodes for the whole series. Devastatingly so.

Stugotz

100% agree. I've been in that situation as well where you have suspicions of something going on but you can't prove it and it just keeps eating at you because you know that something isn't right. When Liam said something about it's always better when your suspicions turn out to be true, it really resonated with me because that's exactly how I felt when I was able to get definitive proof. It sucks, obviously, that your SO is cheating on you but having that knowledge helps with moving on, at least it did for me. I understand the dislike George and Simone had towards his character but I sympathise with him. While Liam did some questionable things I can't blame him for what he did, the man was gaslit constantly by his wife and it all just came to a head. Everyone has a breaking point.

Jon

for the 3rd episode of season 1... at the end of the episode, during the briefing, you said that he was insecure… but he's not insecure at all ! it's not like he's always doing that, always looking for what she’s doing : here, he catches some moments between his girl and a guy... he had a feeling.... and he go through with it ! simple as that... and he was a 100% right : she cheated, she lied for months, she lied about the time her and the guy spend together (first a week, then a month, then 6 months)…. AND she made him think he was the baby's father (witch is one of the WORST thing that could happend to a man)......... so he did that one time (as we know, but there's wasn't a comment from her like "here we go again...", like it was a regular thing).... and that one time was totally justified........... so what's insecure here ? 🤔 the ONLY bad thing he did was when he left for 5 days without communication... and that’s when she made her baby with the other guy ! (…because yeah, 5 days is enough to cheat on someone)… so yeah......... no excuses

KIERON

Really hope you're watching 2x4 next week as well as 2 & 3. It might be my favourite episode of television ever.

miniature

translation of what this guy said: "you guys watched it wrong! you should've reacted the way i wanted you to! because theres only 1 way to interpret something! even though you actually said you hated her by the end, you didnt immediately say it from the start even though the twist wasnt revealed yet so its impossible for you to know that shes bad too, youre suppose to just hate her because i have the hindsight and i hate her. stop watching things different than i do, i paid to have people agree with me, not to share their own opinions!"

Mitchell Bowker

The real question is, when Lian was gone for 5 days without contact with Ffion, were they on a break?

Deco

The thing I love about black mirror is that you can have an hour long conversation after every episode.just great imagination for every idea

Christian Poss

I would give anything to hear my sons voice again. Even in an artificial capacity. He was 18 when he was murdered. I probably shouldn't be watching Black Mirror again. It hurts me, but it's sooo good.

Michel Remy Balschun

I'm so excited for the next episode. White Bear is my favourite!

Christian Poss

BRB also reminds me of the Mirror of Erised from Harry Potter.

Forrest Tanaka

I did watch Be Right Back when it first came out, and if my subjective memory has enough accuracy, I recall thinking we weren’t too far off of that, aside from the robot which I’m thinking even today is several years off, even at an infinite price tag. But the voice, we were quickly getting there. The realistic responses, I felt like we were already there, though we’ve gotten better since. Collecting social media to build a character, it seemed pretty clear we were already heading down that path. Thanks for reacting to Black Mirror. I look forward to these more than anything else you’ve reacted to!

megamoo chilli

Love the discussion about S1 E3. Black Mirror is all about this-technology advancing beyond humans adapting to it. The characters are just doing what so many humans do, having evolved for many many years in a world where this tech hasn't existed. If this tech was really invented, society would adapt new behaviors to live with it.

Mike Miner

I've seen "Her" on a poll or two but I can't imagine it winning. Depending on how much you really like these 2 Black Mirror episodes, you'll like "Her" just as much, if not more.

beecroft adams

Good Domhnall Gleeson films are Frank and Calvary

Opti_Frog

I don't think i appreciated The Entire History of You enough when i first watched it, because it is great science fiction.

Scoobay

I’m sure you guys have seen the running jokes at some point of “this is black mirror coming true”. There’s a lot of those in the episodes to come. They’re like The Simpsons on steroids for their predictive capability.

TGrimace

So excited for next week!

Maya

a great film starring Domhnall gleeson is About time. worth checking out

Alexrandom

When it came out it felt extremely far away to me. The kind of technology you think will be out when you're already dead. Now, having tried a few AI chatbots, this feels crazy how accurate this was. When you start talking to an AI you first feel really impressed and the more you talk to it the more you realize we're not there yet. It does grow exponentially fast though so it's going to come to a point where a human cannot tell the difference between AI and real person sooner than later. That's both really exciting and scary to me. I feel I could get lost in something like that a bit like the character in the episode does. That questions so many things. Even tough a relationship with an AI is a delusion, if it feels real, isn't it ? People have already started going down this route in the real world. Now I'm just rambling. Great reaction as always. Thank you guys.

Deco

I think black mirror might break poor simone, need to get back to some light hearted meth making soon

E. D.

What if this was reality: someone close to you has an accident, dies.. but you’ll never know because immediately they make an AI robot and it‘s if nothing happend. One day the whole world is full of AI replicas of humans who once lived there.

Flori85

I was thinking exactly the same thing. And what struck me for the first time today: I in sure that the picnic scene on the hill is 1:1 in the movie "her" exactly the same. Same shot of the scene, same look. Watch out for it, George and Simone! :)

Dave Tughan

I love that you're watching this series. 301 and 405 are still stuck in my head years later.

Śéáń

Liam, the main character in the Grain episode, plays Koba in the Planet of the Apes films

Śéáń

These two episodes are really tough to watch but are also I feel the type of episode where Black Mirror hits its mark most consistently - near-future settings where an aspect of technology is pushed to a limit (with scary results). Grains in History of You are like an advanced Facebook or social media. It's already the case that security checks are carried out on a person's social media profiles, the Grain is just an extension of that, while the chatbots of dead/past loved ones are actually now a thing just 13 years later. (post-episode edit: When watching BRB first time around, long before the LLM AI stuff we see now, the pre-body tech felt like described above: near future, almost plausible technology that could certainly be here long before the usually depicted flying car SciFi stuff.) While these episodes can be very grim and not the most rewatchable short films in the world, they are undoubtedly excellent food for thought. I haven't watched History of You since it first aired until now, but it has always stuck with me, internally debating its pros and cons.

Coleyra

First of all, i'm glad you made a mini debrief of the first 2 episodes at the beginning, that's a really good idea. Black Mirror episodes can take time to process, and giving it second thoughts after some time is great. And for your question George, i've seen the "Be right Back" episode when it was released, and yes i thought we weren't that far (for the voice part). I didn't think we would be so close in so little time though.

Hugh Jass

If you like Domhnall Gleeson, may I recommend the movie About Time

Khan1001

You guys need to watch SHOGUN ASAP!, its easily the best thing on TV, just finished the season finale and Holy Shit Balls! its basically Japanese/Samurai Game Of Thrones (Peak GOT) if you don't know anything about it.

Monica Alarcon

George, I haven't had this problem since The Expanse. Somehow the episodes you watched had extra scenes than the ones I had so it happens sometimes. I think you should give us the run-time of tv episodes just in case. Doesn't take much time. Just a suggestion.

Bonbon

I am not sure if this has been mentioned, but the craziest thing about these earlier epoisodes is that they came out in 2011 / 2012. They are already over 10 years old and yet seems as if they could have been made today, without any changes at all.

The scent of film and TV is all over this RUM. Smells like freaking tee ah WANNA

🖤Me running to the comments after watching Episode 3 of season 1 because it unlocked a memory for a movie I think Simone and The Administrator should watch. "The Final Cut" with Robin Williams. If you liked that episode, you'd like "The Final Cut" I'd think. Haven't seen it in a while, but i'd say it's categorized as a Sci-Fi/Thriller type. For sure not a comedy tho XD

mojo shivers

"The Entire History of You" is my favorite episode from season one. It's heartbreaking but still makes you think about what the pitfalls and advantages advanced technology would be on a personal level as opposed just to a societal one. I think that's the hallmark of any great Black Mirror episode, how technology affects the human condition and the question if advancing technology is actually better for mankind.

Patrick

Is it still an "insecurity" when everything you're worried about with your partner is actually true?

Elder Lyons

yes. both can be true at the same time imo. like, is it still stealing if youre stealing from a thief, it doesnt make your thievery null just because you stole from a thief. its just two thieves.

Philipp Roensch

1x3, not my favorite, but good enough for some thoughts: The technology presented would change the availability of truth. People expect you to remember names, share a bit more, and if you really want to build trust, you can just show someone your memories. As fine as that sounds, it is also scary, everyone sucks because expectations of the truth are heightened through this technology as well. If there is a way to know and remember everything, would you want to and ask it of others? One place the episode didn't end up was the courtroom, where I suspect a warrant could force people to relinquish their memories as evidence, but would that not be incriminating yourself? I would not need a world where recorded memory, because I think it is a feature that memory is not perfect. 2x1 my actual favorite :D, so: Even though, as you said, it is the same theme, what is the worth of a memory? Maybe it is the even better acting, but it has a way better personal connection, you could feel the grief and personal reasons for getting into the tech. Even if it is imperfect, that makes it useful to her, personally, to a degree. way more nuanced and interesting, I would say. An on the advancement of tech, I feel the writers were somewhat ahead, and it felt like sci-fi, but from the IT expert perspective, nothing impossible with the voice generation.

mky

Actually, back in 2013 when "Be Right Back" came out, Channel 4 in the UK created a realistic Domhnall Gleeson android and gave it/him away in a sweepstakes. Apparently, the woman who won wore it/him out within a month. ;)

mky

A couple of my favorite Domhnall Gleeson movies besides "Ex Machina" are "About Time" (which he stars in) and "Brooklyn" (in which his has a supporting role). But like you said, it's always great when he shows up on screen. Cheers!

dys

When "Be Right Back" came out I thought "minus the robot part, this will be real in 5-10 years". And 10-ish years later we're pretty much there, you can use an LLM to write in the style of a person then feed that into voice cloning AI like Eleven Labs (as George mentioned). My favorite episode of the series, definitely the one that both felt the most prescient at the time and ended up being the most accurate down the line.

Brendan Rafferty

Check out HER (2013) with Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson for the most realistic look at near future application of AI and human relationships

Starman Deluxe

I'm pretty sure the guy playing Liam also played Koba in the "Planet of the Apes" reboot movies

Dave Hampton

Yup this is the way I felt too but in addition I thought we needed to get our laws caught up to this ASAP. Laws that let you determine what can be done with your image/voice... after you die. I think we have made some progress (I thinking of celebrities), but still a way to go.

REDR58

I was just also wondering about how live events are handled when rewatching recordings.

REDR58

Tom Cullen who played Jonas in “The Entire History of You” was also in Downton Abbey.

HeyHeyJK

The "Be Right Back" episode is one of my favorites of the entire show. About 10 years ago, I think, I had about 15 seconds in front of Hayley Atwell at a comic convention and told her how much I thought that episode was a sci-fi retelling of the Alan Rickman film "Truly Madly Deeply", to which she enthusiastically agreed. She might have been just humoring me but it didn't really matter since I was three feet away from Hayley Atwell, but I believe my statement to be true. There are a few small clues they worked into the beginning of that episode starting with them singing the song lyrics "if I can't have you, I don't want nobody baby" and then Ash singing to her "How Deep is Your Love" by the Bee Gees. Then, when Ash is staring at his phone when Martha is asking him about dinner, she throws a tea towel at him and when he asks her why, she says 'Just making sure you're still solid' and then looks at his phone and says 'It's a thief, that thing', both lines which come into play later. Also, I'm on Simone's side, if anything happened to my son, I would definitely leave the measurements on the closet door, although I'd also probably move out of the house, too, but write the measurements down so I could recreate them at a new place. Maybe. Hard to say, but it's possible.

soup3097

Season 3 is my favorite so please continue to react to it. Season 4 also has some episodes I think you both would really appreciate

Ricardo Alanis

I’ve always felt that these two episodes were what truly captured the essence of the show in how technology can mix with human nature into unexpected and sometimes frightening results. But it also is often gray area/understandable. I hope you continue the journey beyond series 1 and 2 because there are so many more interesting stories in this show.

BangDroid

George, your knowledge of AI voice cloning is outdated, only 3 seconds of audio is enough now. Such as VoiceCraft which can be run locally with compatible RTX hardware, generating in a minute or so on a 4080. It wont be long (if we haven't already got there now) before real-time voice cloning is achieved.

BlakeK80DrumCovers

The next episode "White Bear" is the episode that stuck with me more than any other. Really very heavy with a crazy twist. Charlie Brooker is absolutely brilliant at bringing his disturbed vision of a dystopian near future to the screen.

REDR58

The ethical arguments against doing what happens in “Be Right Back” are enormous, especially when it comes to bringing the physical replicant into existence. The voice thing is one matter, but the physical aspect is another thing entirely. What happens if one “resurrects” a copy of a person without the consent of that person’s family members? Does a parent or blood family member have the right to refuse to allow the recreation of the dead person by that person’s partner? I would refuse to allow a facsimile of my sibling to exist if his or her partner wanted to recreate my sibling. What are the rights of the facsimile? Does it have any rights? It it owned by its “administrator”?

Matthew Farrer

Oh, I am right there with you. For me BM’s best all-round episode is “Hated In The Nation” but “White Bear” is absolutely the most emotionally brutal one. I’m already pre-horrified by the thought of watching George and Simone go through it.

Jay

Glad yous are getting into it, these are top notch episodes. Next week is a mixed bag though. I love 'White Bear', easily the closest these early seasons get to all out horror and it's great, but 'Waldo'? Not so much, and I know that's not a minority opinion. Even so, Waldo was quite prescient in a way. I'm sure you'll know what I'm talking about when yous watch it.

Jay

I never knew Jesse Armstrong wrote The Entire History of You. He created Succession and was a co creator of some great English sitcoms, namely Peep Show.

Richard Burrell

Great reaction as always guys! For future film reactions you need to check out ‘Moon’ featuring Sam Rockwell, and ‘Lord of War’ featuring Nicholas Cage. Both very different types of film, but both equally gripping and at times, heart wrenching! ❤️

OldBeardedGuyReacts

I know it's just subjective opinions....but if I had to pick one episode that's different from the others, it wouldn't be episode 1. It would be the one and only "feel good" episode.

HeyHeyJK

The thing I thought about watching it again with G&S is that the 'replicant' version would never grow or mature psychologically as he would have in real life. He would be stuck in the state of who he was at the time of his death, and that would be limited by the experiences recorded via his phone as shown a few times in the episode. That's what made it easy to keep him in the attic, I assume. He wasn't actually Ash outside of interacting with Martha in ways that fit the algorithm or programming from the original creation.

HeyHeyJK

Yeah, can't wait for that one. Simone, especially, is gonna need tissues, but we can't tell her which episode so she may as well keep them handy every time (I mean, she might need them for other episodes, as well). I also can't wait for Simone to watch the 'Star Trek' episode. She's gonna love that one, too.

Gary Fixler

I've always been a very nostalgic person, and I grew up all through the 80s, and I thankfully had a great childhood, so I've always loved looking back at the toys, games, shows, commercials (they were so much more fun back then). After college, probably because I went back to being alone all the time, and online videos were becoming a thing, so there was a ton of stuff to look up, I started looking up all kinds of old things, and after a few weeks it occurred to me I was spending all my time living in the 80s. While that was really great, because it's still one of the best times in my life, I realized I was setting myself up for ruined nostalgia in the future, because I'd be looking back at years of me doing nothing but looking back even further. So, I stopped, and started looking again for fun things to give future me something cool to fondly remember later about this new point in my life, and it worked. I've been living like that ever since. I'd probably still get one of those grains, though 😆

REDR58

(Accidentally deleted!) the thing is, though these days almost everything is easily videoed and recorded, and we can basically have what we saw that show quite easily with smartphones. When I was a kid, there was nothing like that easily accessible, and so my parents have almost nothing of us recorded on video, other than when my 8th grade class was picked to be on a kids game show on Nickelodeon (“Think Fast”) and myself and classmates can be seen in the audience. Conversely, my sister has loads of videos and very high quality photos of her daughters. We never dreamed back then what we can do so easily now (I grew up in the 1970s and 80s).

JBK405

I read a sci-fi short story a few decades ago similar to the concept of "Be Right Back". No clones (or robo-clones) but rather you could hire a company to record the current life of a loved one and after they've passed you could re-watch their life. The surviving partner in the story (obviously) became obsessive after the death, and spent constant time re-watching. The interactive element of this episode adds a new twist, but it's ultimately the same problem. It's not LIFE you're experiencing, it's the IMITATION of life. And that's so tragic and heartbreaking.

RipTheRipper

TV Requests: w more than 2 Seasons - Stranger Things w 2 seasons or less - Wednesday (2nd season filming) - 11.22.63 (1 season mini series) - My So-Called Life (1 Season) - The End of the F***ing World (2 Seasons)

mky

I watched the US Netflix version, which went out of sync every so often because of the issue you mentioned. Not a huge deal, but an occasional minor inconvenience whenever I had to resync. 🤷🏻‍♂️

droodly

Just got the chance to finish this. In the discussion after Be Right Back George said aside from the population, etc. death is necessary? I'm curious as to what you meant? If it's no longer something that you have to go through why would you? Grief and all the associated trauma are for the living. If the technology were perfected, what is the downside of no death?

MacGuffinStuff

Domnhall Gleason is so great, but let's be honest, the Irish are just fuckin with the rest of us with these spellings. It's pronounced Donal. I mean I love it, Siobhan, Sinead, Eadaoin, I feel like I'm naming Elven royalty, but Naimh takes the cake, pronounced like Neev, what's that? But I love it. The Welsh though, Jesus FC.

Tom M

Netflix is so counterintuitive. The seasons are bottom to top but the episodes are top to bottom. I started the wrong episode for 2-1 again just like with 1-1.

Rafael Benedicto

I think the seasons are in reversed order so that when a new season comes out viewers can easily see it at the top and get to it. But this reversed ordering isn't necessary for the episodes within those seasons, especially for shows where all episodes for that season are released at once.

Dan Holmes

The tech in episode 3 is practically a 1:1 comparison to social media and the horrors it's wrought upon society

Sergio Meira

The fact that 'The Entire History of You' was, as you say, a very personal story (not a 'social impact' story -- though you can imagine the social impact from this very personal story), IMHO, doesn't make it better, but actually worse. Have you ever considered the personal impact of new technologies -- what Smartphones have come to mean in individual lives, in individual relationships? There's no social impact without personal impact. Every piece of technology gives new possibiilties for old tragedies to unfold -- and that's what the grain did. I can imagine this story without this technology, but the actual details would be different and more difficult to conjure up one after the other. The grain simply made this kind of tragedy much easier -- just as social networks make mob harassment via mean tweets so much simpler than it was before, when every "mean letter" had to be posted invidually and brought to its victim by the postal service. As a consequence, you have more adolescents committing suicide -- not a new phenomenon (suicide because of harassment existed before), but as a simpler, easier, and therefore more frequent one. I guess Uncle Ben's words -- "with great power comes great responsibility" -- is also true for the new power brought in by new technology.

Sergio Meira

Of course it's "people's weakness", not technology weakness. Every new technology opens new great, optimistic paths too. But peope are people, and one thing you can't disregard is that the new technology is going to be used by (flawed) people. So--should we disregard this fact? Shouldn't we think about how knives are indeed used for stabbing when making and marketing them? In short: Technology among us is FOR people. You can't just dismiss this fact with happy stories of the great uses technology can have (if only people were better than they are) unless you limit technology to beings other than people. If technology is for us, not taking us into account when creating it ("some people will use knives for stabbing") is, I think, at best stupid, and at worst irresponsible.

Steve kephart

My favorite Dohmal Gleeson movie is About Time. You guys should watch it if you haven't seen it. It's more of a Simone movie. But George should enjoy it as well.

Noel Valdez

I didn't notice before that two of my favorite episodes are back to back here! WTF. lol These are the best in the whole show IMO. Ive shown these to people even if we haven't seen the rest of the show best I think they are two really good short films basically. But they both give you a lot to think about and have that bleak tone I enjoy in horror or thriller content. (idk what people consider this show as far as genre but id say it's horror. lol) (On the history of you, I don't think the criminal argument is actually a good one because it implies that we live in a just society which we don't. Every kind of freedom moment or protest would be suppressed because you could pass laws that made it so that if you were apart of a freedom moment or rights group you could be barred from getting jobs or going places. If the government was after a certain group and you had people hiding out at your place or you were helping them, (like Nazi Germany) it could mean that you could get caught like immediately. It only works if the government is just and fair but that isn't the case for many places. Also if you're like a poor child who has to steal to eat I wouldn't want them to get caught so easily. Not everything illegal is necessarily wrong. I wouldn't stop someone stealing food from a grocery store because they probably are desperate.)

Noel Valdez

Also my theory for episode two is that the people in the box aren't the only humans around. This is just me being a nerd, but the fact that it's basically just an allegory for capitalism. I think that rich people basically "own" the earth and they get to live in a few select cities, but the people in the box are the ones that power it because the rest of the earths resources have been destroyed. The whole earth has these box things and only very few rich people get to live in a couple of cities that are only for them and the rest of humanity makes power for them. My idea is like only a million or even less actually live outside the boxes. Thats my nerdy theory anyways. Lol (and I think it's a future of the earth we live on but past the time we already used up all fossil fuels.)

Bbb K

It is true that technologies are not responsible for how people (ab)use them. However technologies can invite certain actions and discourage others. Designers of technologies should, I believe, be held accountable for the enabling constraints of what they introduce into the human life-world.

RuinFox

For some reason at my current tier Cinephile i cannot access this.

RuinFox

edit nevermind it worked the 2nd time i tried haha, Patreon being Patreon i guess.

KatMakes

S1E3 - The Entire History of You. What a fantastic episode! So much to ponder in a world that exists on a DVR as much as it does reality. I would want to know a bit more from her: 1. What is the play count of that memory? 2. What is the last access date? I guess he got his answer even without these, but I was thinking it the whole time.
