Paul: breaths or does anything, Stiglar: Lisan al Gaib! 😂 Oh man what a phenomenal film, visually the score, the way Austin Butler was introduced amazing!

Justin Hunt

Let's GOOOOOOOOOOO! I've been refreshing for a few hours waiting for this :)

Ph4ZeD

YES YES YES!!!

Philipp Roensch

I'll be waiting for this rewatch a bit longer, for the blu ray release, but it is next month, until then - have fun!

Prof. Writhms

Now that you've seen both parts, please check out the David Lynch 1984 version of "Dune". I think it would be an interesting reaction.

Grand Moff Slackin'

Omg you do love us. We thank you for the gift of your body’s moisture. We accept it in the spirit with which it is given.

Prof. Writhms

George/Simone, I don't think you can be called an "actor" if you have NO stage/theater background, where there are no take twos and you have to remember your lines like a pro. Denzel Washington, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, Meryl Streep, etc... They are all actors. People with no stage experience and who only act in movies are movie stars, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Cruise, etc. By the way... Samuel L. Jackson acted on stage before he did movies. And he has formal acting training. So is he just a movie star? 🤔

G P

Check out Dune (1984)!

Shonnicus

"Father, The Sleeper has Awakened!" Can't wait for David Lynch - Dune

Grand Moff Slackin'

Your intro recap of Dune part 1 reminds me of the John Mulaney bit from this year’s Oscars ceremony. It’s great but it has Field of Dreams spoilers if you haven’t seen that movie.

Gary Fixler

> I don't think you can be called an "actor" if you have NO stage/theater background I live in LA, so for me, actors are all the work-a-day people who are in whatever they can get, auditioning all the time, working at regular jobs, like waiting tables in the meantime. When I first got there, 22 years ago, I would ask waiters "So do you have another job, too, like something in the industry?" and almost to a person, they would get a little excited, and say "YES! I'm also an actor. I've done a commercial, and I'm also an extra in..." Sometimes they'd be musicians, and link me to their site, and tell me about their latest release(s). They'd always come alive a bit, so happy someone wanted to know about their "real" job (that didn't yet really pay anything). When I think of the theater/classically trained group, I tend to say "ACK-Tooorr" with an overly stuffy British accent, to differentiate them from the countless work-a-day actors that surround me on a daily basis :-D

Gary Fixler

Off the top of my head, The Rock was in The Mummy: Scorpion King, F&F franchise, Jumanji, Doom (based on the video game), and Red Notice, with Ryan Reynolds. Edit: removed Hidden Strike; I forgot that was John Cena and Jackie Chan.

Gary Fixler

Speaking of bankability, I was looking up the lady in the T-Mobile commercial for the iPhone 15, because for some reason I can never place her, and a) duh, she's Zoe Saldana, but b) I randomly learned she's considered the highest grossing actress of all time, if you include cameos and voice acting. This number is determined by how much all of the films the actress has been in have made. She's actually 7th in that list, behind 6 dudes - Stan Lee at #1, then Sam Jackson, Frank Welker, John Ratzenberger, Bob Bergen, and Chris Pratt. If you go only by lead/ensemble roles, then she's second, behind Scarlett Johansson, who's only second behind Robert Downey Jr. Zoe is so high because she's in 5 of the highest grossing franchises of all time - Avatar, Avengers, Star Trek, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Of course, this isn't the same kind of bankability as The Rock, where if you make him your lead, the movie kills, but it's an interesting correlation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_actors

You've just opened up a whole new video category for you to post - Simone Drunk Movie Recaps.

Brendan Rafferty

Movie star is an actor whose affiliation with a project is the selling point. Actors get put in big movies. Actors who are movie stars get big movies greenlit

maxthesilent

best recap ever? best recap ever.

REDR58

Speaking of Robert Downey Jr., check him out in “Less Than Zero” (1987) and “Chaplin” (1992), two movies that are about as far apart as they can be but have excellent performances by Downey Jr.

ChickensAreRacist

Sorry Simone you were told spoilers so often throughout.

SbE

Now we need Simone to make her own channel where she recaps movies off the top of her head.

Grand Moff Slackin'

I do believe Denis had said he was already writing the script for Dune Messiah and this was when part 2 had just been released in theaters.

Brendan Rafferty

So disappointing A beautiful film with incredible talent on both sides of the camera… …but they made so many changes from the book and left so many important things out… so much of what’s important in the story is lost. I understood and expected that there would be some changes and some things cut to translate the book to film The removal of Harah (who was listed as being cast)… Paul and Chani’s son Leto II, Gurney seeking vengeance against Jessica, Thufir, having Jessica push Paul, making the emperor weak and doing the bidding of the Bene Gesserit… I was okay with these changes and cuts that didn’t really affect the larger story. But there were some big cuts and changes that not only did not save running time or pacing, but changed or lessened the story ▪️not having Alia born and eliminating her character by reducing the passage of time between the fall of the Atreides and the fall of the Harkonnen from three years to six months was a serious cop out and denied the audience a crucial character ▪️the connection between worms and spice ▪️not explaining the Baron’s motives and long term strategy reduced him to a cartoonish villain ▪️the spacing guild… jesusfuckingchrist… not explaining that they control everything… no one can travel without the guild… not explaining how they absolutely need spice to fold space takes away the importance of the spice… that if spice production ended, so would civilization… it would immediately end all interstellar travel and every world would forever be isolated. It explains the power Paul, as a terrorist, has to make his demands. It also explains how Paul is able to launch his holy war as the guild will transport his troops and do anything he wants to keep spice flowing ▪️having Chani oppose Paul changes the heart of the book… in the book, he does not pledge to rule together with Irulan… he marries her to gain the throne but swears to never touch her and pledges to Chani, keeping the same kind of relationship his parents has ▪️no mention of the religion that every civilization in the imperium adheres to… which explains so much or this world, from their technology to the way they fight This was a beautiful movie but I don’t understand the decisions to make it less than it could have been.

darkmoobs

Fantastic movie! My only real complaint is where the hell is Thufir Hawat?! lol

Jasbro

Right after the movie came out Denis had mentioned that he'd either finished writing the 3rd movie or was almost finished writing it but it was still unknown if there would be a 3rd movie, but it was confirmed recently that they are indeed making Messiah.

RipTheRipper

1. I enjoyed this film although I didn't love it as much as many 2. I'm very happy you reacted to it as I am a proponent of reacting to recent movies once they hit streaming (even though I decided not to rewatch this one ) 3. My hope is that you will do this with more recent movies but not just big tentpole films. An example is one I will request today, Late Night With the Devil. A small but wonderfully made film that just hit streaming. 4. Of course, you can't do this with all recent releases..I am hopeful for ones that are very notable in the public eye (such as Dune 2) but also ones that have gotten great acclaim even if smaller films. Fingers crossed

RipTheRipper

Requests: - Late Night With The Devil (2023) - Silver Linings Playbook (2012) - The Village (2004) - Where the Crawdads Sing (2022) - Big Eyes (2014) - The Disaster Artist (2017)

Dazzler & Em

As fans of Rebecca Ferguson, you need to add the TV show Silo to the next list. They have only done 1 season so far, so it woulds be relatively short watch(I think 8 episodes).

samuel Jakob

My take on georges question at the beginning is, an actor is someone who plays in movies/shows but is mostly known to people who actually consume a lot of that kind of media. A moviestar is someone even people who dont really watch movies etc. know by name or even how they look like. A Celebrity is someone who is generally well known for any kind of media. well now its time to watch the movie. :D Great reaction, such a great movie, cant wait for how they adapt the rest, its so well done for such a "short" time. Also I kinda missed ur trivia stuff at the end, I always enjoy that a lot.

pedantech

You should take a look at the Fatboy Slim "Weapon of Choice" music video. Was Christopher Walken partly chosen for this role because of this video?

Mastervodo

I was waiting for the commentary for Simone or George to use the word "Epic" for this movie. Because this series is the epitome of EPIC Sci-Fi.

El Mémé

George i'm totally with you about the Christopher Walken thing. I don't know who they could have cast, but he's one of those actors that in a way has too much of a recognizable face. I don't know. I think he just felt too human and normal to me, compared to others like the Reverend Mother or the Baron.

Odd Thomas

Don't bother with Dune 84. If you were going to watch it I would have watched it first because it's bad as a standalone but when compared to the new films it looks even worse (and this is coming from a David Lynch fan)

Jay Davis

Anyone else blowing up their whole day and just doing the re-watch of part 1 then the first time watch of part 2? No? Just me? ...kay.

Monica Alarcon

Damn this didn't feel like an almost 3 hour movie. I was watching it and then glanced to the time stamp and it was 2 hours already! I thought it was like 45 minutes at most... Before watching it I was like "okay I'll watch half today then the rest tomorrow" but I watched all of it...

Odd Thomas

Austin Butler is great in Elvis

simon brouillard

I had the exact same reaction to Christopher Walken and I haven’t red the books but felt the switch was quite quick but beside that I loved that movie. Bring back cinema cringe with Lynchs Dune🤪

Harry Fieldson

For me, an actor is just anyone acting frequently in movies and a movie star is someone who you can put their name in the leading role and it'll draw at least some attention by itself without any more knowledge of the movie. Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Tilda Swinton, Morgan Freeman etc.

Chris B

Confirmed they are doing it but just 2 days ago Villeneuve said he's "preparing to start writing the script and will take his time" so, it will be some time. 2027 the earliest, maybe later.

Odd Thomas

If you like Rebecca Ferguson you should watch Doctor Sleep!

Tatiana Ferreira

After seeing the movie 6 times, I realised I don't like the changes they made to Chani's character. I would prefer if they created another character for that, or give Chani a more defiant personally, but not as far as they went. She didn't believe in anything, not even Paul's visions. She even gaslighted him and constantly treated him with suspicion for other people's beliefs, even before he did anything. It's not his fault people believe the prophecy, but it was like she blamed him for it. And to a point I didn't even believe she loved him. How can you love someone and treat them like an untrustworthy stranger at the same time. It doesn't work for me personally. Now, if there is a 3rd movie I don't know how Denis will fix their relationship. I feel like there is no solution for them at this point and she's supposed to be a key character in Dune Messiah.

Logan Kerlee

I really enjoyed the original - a lot more than this one. xD This was fun and cool but c'mon - this one's so hard to take seriously. I'm biased as hell though so I don't expect everyone to agree with me. Growing up, I didn't enjoy Dune. After I watched it as an adult though, I loved it. Maturity is what I think changed my mind on it - not positive. I just know that I enjoy(ed) the original far more than I did, this one. Hoping that you both can appreciate the original at the very least, :)

Michael Green

The stuff that happens in the next two books is so deeply weird that I'm excited to see how Villeneuve adapts it. I think they did a fine job here, and I see clearly why they made the changes they did, so should be an interesting ride in a few years.

Ed R

I didn't think Christopher Walken was a great casting choice however his screen time was short enough that it didn't matter. Plus I think he did a good job dialing back the classic "Walken".

Lola Lirola

If you do David Lynch's Dune, you have to also do Jodorowski's Dune! It's the most influential movie never made. There's a fantastic documentary about it. Jodorowski is a narcissistic asshole, but honestly the documentary is the most incredible ode to failure and the unknown ripples of our ambition. Plus, it's chock-full of movie history, and the movie production is presented almost like a heist. It would have been the most insane version: the Baron Harkonen was going to be Orson Welles, and Feyd Rautha was going to be Mick Jagger! Padishah was going to be Salvador Dalí, and Pink Floyd was going to do the music. A then unknown swiss comic book illustrator named HR Giger got started on movie design... Seriously, really well worth a watch.

REDR58

Walk without rhythm It won't attract the worm Walk without rhythm And it won't attract the worm Walk without rhythm And it won't attract the worm If you walk without rhythm Ah, you never learn, yeah

Grumblefunk

Now that you've seen this and part one, you REALLY owe it to yourselves (and us lol) to watch David Lynch's 1984 Dune, I think while this new one is fresh in your minds it would be a fantastic reaction to just how insane and grimy the first Dune film is.

Joey Johansen

Gosh you guys are busy, so many videos. Love it, but also hope it doesn't exceed ya'lls capacity of stress overload etc. Cheers!

Lola Lirola

Same. I was commenting with friends that Chani spends both movies going: 'your visions are bullshit, this messianic shit is wrong, who do you think you are, the people who follow you are stupid sheep, your mother is the worst, you can't do anything right, I can't believe you're trying to lead people, this ritual is bad, I don't want to participate in it, you will never be one of us, I don't trust you, I don't trust your mother, I don't trust your prophecies, I don't trust your leadership..." And she's supposed to be the love interest! I haven't read the books, but honestly she loathes him in the movie! It doesn't help that Zendaya and Chalamet feel quite cold with each other too, but whew.

sarCC

I agree on the Christopher Walken point. It distracted me so much that when, during the scene Simone described, it was completely silent until Christopher Walken said "Baron" exactly as I expected Christopher Walken to, I laughed out loud in the theater.

MacGuffinStuff

Holy shit. That was awesome! I kept hearing that from people and it did NOT disappoint. I have never read the books (I guess the three?) but I'm determined to before what has to be the next movie. I was aware of a lot of the plot and characters because I have seen David Lynch's version of Dune, and I will say that in that one I thought the Baron was even creepier, and his relationship with Feyd (played by Sting) was super cringey, but David Lynch is so good at doing creepy and disturbing that I sometimes get him confused with David Cronenberg, the body horror director who did The Fly. One thing I really loved about Austin Butler's Feyd was the way he seemed to be doing a great job of adopting Stellan Skargard's accent, as if that was the Harkonnen's accent, I thought that was a great detail. I can't wait for the next one but we probably will have to wait a while, I think it'll be worth it. Fingers crossed.

REDR58

Interesting. I didn’t think he was “Walkening” it up at all. He was fine.

An Inanimate Fucking Object

When I first saw this, I was 100% convinced the actor for Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen was Bill Skarsgard (the guy who played the clown in IT and who, although I didn't realize it until after I looked up if he was the one who played Feyd, is Stellan Skarsgard's son). It would have made total sense for him to have the ability to do the cadence/voice of his dad. But no, Feyd was actually played by Austin Butler. Apparently I'm not alone in a lot of people thinking the two look alike. And by the way, from the accounts I've heard it was all Austin Butler's choice to adopt the Skarsgard cadence and Skarsgard was surprised when he was doing it in the scene with him

Gary Fixler

Re: how to pronounce Chani... This just brought back memories of reading the Wheel of Time series, many moons ago. I got to the end of the first book, and found a pronunciation guide for all the names, and found the only one I wasn't completely wrong about was Mat 😭 Nynaeve: I said nih-NAVE. It's NINE-eev Egwene: I said EGG-win. It's eh-GWAYN SIuan Sanche: I said SEE-yoo-WAN SONCH. It's SWAN SAHN-chay Aes Sedai: I said ACE. It's EYES, like eyeballs I felt like I needed to start over and re-read it, because it felt like I had no idea who anyone was anymore.

Jacob King

Without spoiling anything the Baron’s death is much better in the book. The compressed timeline makes sense from a film point of view but they cut years of character development. I think the changes to Chani do work because you need a kick the cat moment or some audience members will go away thinking Paul is the hero. I love this movie but not as much as the first one or the book. Please do watch Doctor Sleep for more evil Rebecca Ferguson.

djKENTO

George love Rebecca Ferguson but yall still haven’t reacted to Doctor Sleep… COME ON! GEORGE YOU WILL LOVE IT!

Jeff I.

Just throwing in another recommendation for Doctor Sleep, the follow-up to The Shining. It's pretty good overall, and Rebecca Ferguson is great in it!

Stephen Woods

Is it wrong that when Simone said Dune part 1 had woken something up in her I immediately think "The Sleeper has Awakened" lol

Grandalf

Guys, silence is the proper reaction. After watching it this third time, with the first being in IMAX (GO FUCKING SEE IT IN IMAX WHILE YOU CAN!!!), I feel confident saying this is the best movie I've seen. This is what movies are supposed to be.

Stephen Woods

My biggest criticism of these movies is the total eradication of the spacing guild.

Gary Fixler

I'm curious how others feel about the 80s version. To me, it's a big classic, if a bit weird, like a Conan the Barbarian. I feel like it was a pretty big deal in its day. These new movies do kind of blow it away with their visuals, but there was a lot to love about the original. I'd love to see/hear their take on it. Maybe it can be an extra at some point?

Gary Fixler

Completely random aside, but I practice stenography while watching CB. I'm still not at full conversational speed, and that may be a while, so there are lots of skips and ...'s, but it's great to have hours of back and forth conversation many times per week, and I get to improve a skill while chilling with two cool peeps. I use a speaker-id plugin, and George's stroke is SKPR-FP (top left two keys, right hand), and Simone's is SKPR-LT (top right two keys). For everyone in the movie, I just use SKPR-RB (bottom left two), which labels them as other. (I set it up so all the speaker ID strokes start with SKPR-) Example (of 1200+ lines from this movie): OTHER: Look who's back from the dead. GEORGE: Wow, that was fast. SIMONE: Yeah! OTHER: For my duke, and my friends. SIMONE: Phew! Ew gross. GEORGE: It's probably the one good thing he's ever done... Feed the wild. OTHER: War ships. OTHER: The Great Houses. Gurney, it's time. Free the houses.

Simon Pegged Me

For the game, an actor is someone who embodies a role; a movie star is the opposite—a role is a vehicle for them/their brand: a movie star is someone that producers use to draw money or backing to a project because the public wants to see more of the celebrity and will follow them to any project, regardless of the material. For the emperor, I don't think Walken was right for the role or that he made poor choices for it. His emperor projects fear and weakness, which is at odds with the leader of the known universe. As a contrast, think of Charles Dance's Tywin Lannister, old but terrifyingly powerful. Because the character has so little screen time, a lot of the work of revealing him is nonverbal, and nothing Walken did worked for me. Finally, watch Lynch's Dune, but understand it is Flash Gordon (1980) campy, I mean, like Sting in a combat Speedo campy. I think the Dune (2000) miniseries might be a better followup reaction piece.

ScivarWarlock

Sam Jackson had B.M.F. on his lightsaber in Star Wars

FranciscoGios

Sting accepted the role of Fyed-Rautha (Dune-1984) only because he was a close friend to David Lynch the director 😆

REDR58

1984 Dune has amazing production values. The interior sets are really something and that alone is worth the view, right up there with the general Lynchian weirdness. I also like the spacecraft designs much better aside from the ornithopter.

REDR58

I wouldn’t say “cringey” as much as “disturbing.” Then again, Dune 1984’s Baron is just generally disturbing.

Andrew Roach

Thank you, I appreciate the sacrifice to not see this in theaters in order to provide us with your first reaction. I think it would be a blast to watch Dune 1984, not really a good movie but worth the watch because it is so damn weird.

Aaron Crawford

Prisoners recommendation for more Villeneuve

Duke Running

You should watch the original dune on cinecringe. Just throwing that out there

China Andronicus

As a book fan, I loved the changes to Chani's character. I felt that it really helped the film emphasize the fact that Paul is not a hero, which many people still don't seem to get. I think that's why they edited down Paul's speech at the end. The softer they write him, the better he comes across. She has always been Chah-nee to me, like in the film. When you say Shaynee, it sounds like Dick Cheney, the politician. Can't unhear it. The actor playing Feyd put on that voice to sound like Skarsgaard. He did a very good job. Dune Messiah is definitely in the works down the line, and knowing Anya Taylor-Joy is involved is super exciting. I loved Christopher Walken. I think he's severely underrated, though. Man has an Oscar for a reason. If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend watching the Deer Hunter, though it's a tough watch.

Patrick

Heads up Ya'll, Dune Part 2 just started streaming on HBO Max as of TODAY. March 21st

Joits

am i the only one who doesn't want them looking at movie posters, especially ones that feature the cast? i love reactions when they don't know who's in a movie and are surprised by it.

Angela D. Mitchell

George, it's not just that the BGs weren't prepared for Paul's birth -- it was meticulously planned as part of thousands of years of preparation. Literally not scheduled. It wasn't supposed to happen yet and destroyed everything they had been working toward. Jessica bearing a son and disobeying orders was almost unprecedented, and meant that all they could do at that point was damage control, GJ testing, and attempts to figure out whether Paul could be controlled. I think I like the twist on Chani. It's taken me a few days to process it, but the more I think about it, and upon rewatch, the more I like it, and what it does to the narrative. It gives Chani a fantastic arc and makes her a much more active participant. It also enriches Paul's narrative and cements that he is in some ways the villain here -- which we can see in the books, but it's hard not to root for him there anyway. I really liked Pugh as Irulan (and she's someone I find very hit or miss), loved Feyd Rautha (superb casting and performance), and liked most of the casting. I didn't mind Walken as Shaddam at all and thought he did a great job here. I think this is a great movie, but I wish Paul and Chani had chemistry (to me they are utterly chemistry-free), and I wish Chalamet didn't come off so much like a petulant emo boy versus a prince denied. I just don't think he has the right charisma here at all. I also disliked the sudden total removal of Hawat in part 2, the removal of the Guild/Guildsmen, and the removal of Count Fenring (I did like the actress who played Margo Fenring here, and I usually cannot stand her due to her absolutely awful work in the Bond films). I also feel that Villeneuve is often -- I feel -- too in love of images of tiny humans antlike against the planetary backdrop, etc., and it is something that only works in cinemas for me. On any smaller screen it just looks like I have to squint to see who is doing what. As far as DUNE MESSIAH -- it makes total sense to me that Villeneuve would plan and film it as the third part of a trilogy, since it does end at a huge plot point that sort of clears the way for the next book (the equally wonderful CHILDREN OF DUNE). And Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia is casting perfection. Cannot wait.

Philipp Roensch

Sorry for coming to this video late, the home video release was just yesterday^^. (imo) A celebrity is someone who lives almost exklusivly of their own brand/name, The Rock, Ryan Reynolds, Timotheé (sorry) etc. They can sometime act and are certainly professionals, but their inclusion in a movie is only for recognition of them. An actor is someone who can definitly act, in film and theater, had many roles and variation in it, but often is not the lead. Anthony Hopkins, Ben Kingsley, Ian McKellen, all of them there. A movie star is someone who is not only ofthem the lead, not just a great actor, but also the main drive to see the movie, the magical mix of all of the above, without being just themselves. Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Orson Welles, Leonardo DiCaprio - all the people you would recognize as talented and recognizible even if they dissapear into a role. But certainly the whole distinction is more nuanced and personal for everybody. Related video suggestion: "When Movie Stars become brands" by Patrick H Willems Now for Dune Part Two, it is just great^^ I love how much more of the Fremen we get to see. I even like the little Life of Brian moment from Stilgar, there is someting funny about blind belief, until it is not :D. The buildup of Feyd and finally some bigger action scenes with good intensity. With all the epic scale and visuals of the fremen army the warfare and final duell, this showdown is one for the ages. I would even rank it Ride of the Rohirim level. The holy war certainly has begun 0_0. I love everything Denis has done here to leap the story into high gear now. Maybe the tragic demise of Pauls first child could have been helpful, but it makes sense to compress a bit of time. To answer one little question, I believe Paul won the duell by controling his body Bene Gesserit style, not just future vision. This movie shows Paul first discard his ducal heritage and the prophecy, but also go back to put on the ring again, accept his messiah role and also drink the water, so as the Kwisatz Haderach he really is all of these, not just one thing. And it is fucking scary :D I agree, Christopher Walken as the Emperor is not quite on spot like the rest, given that this would have been oppertunity to cast a POC in his mid 40s according to the book, he is certainly too bland and frail. Fun trivia: Yes, Geidi Prime is filmed in Infrared, Gurney plays the Dune 1992 video games' theme on the Baliset and Austin Butler did unlearn his Elvis and learned a scandinavian accent - impressing Stellen.

Spacecat44

Is it possible to get a second channel where Simone just tries to describe movies she's seen?

Thoko

I did not enjoy this reaction. Maybe its because its my first time watching the film, I dunno. But its just not fun to have George providing explanations for things and for Simone to be asking questions about the world. Its ruining the experience for me because I don't want to be given the answers by George. I turned off my uncut reaction and continued the film by myself.

Itbewhatitbe

why in the fuck would you watch a movie for the first time via a reaction, thats entirely on you lmao. cause what youre describing, of one person asking questions and the other answering is what is commonly known as "a conversation". which is what commentaries are, which is what they do in literally every video, ever. especially ones knows the story and the other doesnt. the problem lies with the stupid choice you made to watch it for the first time with a reaction lmao.
