Looking forward to this. Mary Cherry is great!!!

Other good E. Page movies/TV: Whip it! Super Umbrella Academy

I love to travel... to the kitchen to get coffee.

Odd Thomas

The girl behind the desk is Emily Perkins and she's in a GREAT Canadian movie called Ginger Snaps.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Ay nice to see a fellow Aussie show up on the reaction landscape 🥳 Also this movie has a wonderful emotiveness to it I’ve always enjoyed. Glad you had a good time with it

Neil

Just noticed the timer in the video is running at double speed, it’s not an issue, just letting you know.

Requests: - Do Revenge (2022) - Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) - Lucas (1986) - A Beautiful Mind (2001) - The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007) - The Iron Claw (2023)

Garrett Mazzuca

The most offensive thing in this movie is Jennifer Garner calling the Soundgarden shirt stupid. Superunknown is one of the best albums of all time! lol

Patrick

I love how Jason Bateman has the same job as Charlie Sheen in Two and a Half Men.

Justtired

If you’re looking for more from Rainn Wilson, I’d recommend The Rocker with Emma Stone and Josh Gad.

Adverb

Just to answer your question, the movie takes place in Minnesota.

Turtle-man 2023

Aww Simone and George made a friend. That's nice

Odd Thomas

I don't even think it's about Mark being a ped, it's about him being immature and he's mentally more on the level of Juno, hence they have a connection. If he had tried to kiss her, then that would be creepy but I took the dancing to be about him trying to recreate his youth. Also Vanessa did streamroll Mark into adoption when they really should have discussed it and seen they aren't on the same page, so both are at fault for bad communication.

Odd Thomas

Jason Reitman made another film with Jennifer Garner where she is the absolute WORST mother. It's called Men, Women & Children.

Jacob King

Really fun watching this movie again after not having seen it in a long while. Much more on Vanessa’s side than I probably was the first time I saw it. She is supposed to come across as uptight and controlling in the beginning but a lot of that falls on Mark’s lack of maturity. Obviously it gets more heartbreaking as it goes along and you see beneath her exterior. Mark is right about Sonic Youth’s cover of Superstar. Another good accidental pregnancy movie is Jenny Slate’s Obvious Child, which has David Cross in it to keep the Arrested Development theme going. My JK Simmons pick is The Accountant.

Tay Schumaker

Palm Springs is a pretty fun movie that’s starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti that JK Simmons has a supporting role in where he’s not terrifying. I think you guys would dig it Up In the Air is another Jason Reitman movie that JK Simmons is in too, with Clooney and Anna Kendrick that’s also pretty great And he plays a dad in I Love You Man where he’s pretty wholesome

JakeToll

When worlds collide.

Date Mike

I'm sorry but, you’re totally wrong with Mark... he’s not like a pedo at all ! 🤷🏻 he’s just clearly doin’ that for his wife… he's immature, he's not ready at all, it’s way to fast for him (as he explain)… while she's ready since... always - and all that, while he’s thinking of leaving her… so the fact that he find someone who understands him, who let him express himself, have the same tastes in music, etc… reminds him that he’s really have to go YES, the moment with her, while dancing and everything, was totally inappropriate of course… but that doesn’t mean he’s a pedo… it's not like he tried to kiss her, make an advance or something... - what kind of conclusion is that ? (maybe it's a generation thing, I don't know)

Einherj

I got the feeling Mark was just not ready for a family. He constantly made jokes about being old, so he probably felt life had passed him by. He even said he hadn't accomplished the things he wanted yet. He probably felt young again with Juno since their interests were so aligned. The dancing was weird, but Juno initiated it. I don't think it was sexual for him. I saw it as him being able to be himself for a while. It felt like he was always tip toeing around Vanessa. She didn't seem to like any of his hobbies and had pushed him to that one room and basement. Their relationship was not healthy at all.

REDR58

Simmons also very good in “The Accountant” from 2016 (also with Anna Kendrick!) with Ben Affleck starring.

Moon Logic

The Romans gave Latin names to most of the Greek Gods, so Zeus and Hera became Jupiter and Juno.

Kevin Morris

JK Simmons is the main character in Counterpart and it's great

Mastervodo

I think that a lot of what you said about Garner's/Bateman's man/wife situation was valid, but I think like a lot of people here, it wasn't all HIS fault. I think there was some blame to go around, that ultimately their goals diverged at some point, and it took this situation for Bateman to stand up for himself and be real about what he wanted to do in life, vs trying to make Garner happy in every way. They did totally ride the line, I think with forethought, about an inappropriate situation with Juno and him. They EASILY could have had him make a pass at her. OR the other way around. I think that was all 100% intentional. Also want to say the music choices in this movie make me think of an old friend of mine and I will be sending clips of them to her forthwith.

Śéáń

I think the conversation in the basement is a bit of a kick-the-dog moment for his character. Something that cements him as 'the bad guy' of the situation. If they had left that part out and had used another scene to cause the reveal/conflict where he comes out with his lack desire to adopt the baby, it would be a more even conflict where he just couldn't bring himself tell Vanessa/things were left unsaid until way too late, but that scene in the basement where he says he 'thought [Juno] would be happy' that he's getting his own place in town does place more blame on him than the greater situation around it, it does show that he intended for things to progress with Juno more than they could during their couple of meetups at his family home. The fact that it's such a shock to Vanessa that Mark didn't want a kid after all to me indicates that this isn't something they've discussed or debated in the past (i.e. there was no willing push from Vanessa for him to go along with her plans, she just assumed they were on the same page) so I don't feel there's blame outside of Mark as to how things went down.

Eric Mc Daniel

I was wondering about that. I was watching it in both windows and I look over at about an hour into it, the timer says 2 hours.

Opti_Frog

Good actors and fun characters. But i sort of hate this movie. I know i saw it when it was new, but i had forgotten most of it. I figured out why. This time i had a hard time finishing it. First of all, this is not an independent film. It's a studio backed pro-life fantasy PRETENDING to be an indie film. Instead of being edgy or subversive, which the movie sold itself as, it's pretty regressive. I mean, the reason for not seriously considering an abortion in Juno-world is dentist smell and fingernails, and just sweeping that option under the rug to keep the girl pregnant for story reasons. This movie does not depict a teenage pregnancy in a realistic way, it's hardly more than a cute and minor nuisance. Let Juno stew in your brain for a while and you might realise... It's kind of fucked up.

Jacob King

There’s a gag earlier on, almost the first line, where Juno thinks Morgan Freeman was in The Bone Collector. It’s actually Denzel Washington. Juno is written as this super witty confident teen who’s very sure of herself but she’s also wrong about a lot of things like most 16 year olds and is just repeating what she remembers.

Eric Mc Daniel

A comedy featuring JK Simmons you can check is The Ladykillers in 2004. It was directed by the Coen Bros. so it's got a bit of familiarity for you guys

REDR58

One of the best depictions of that aspect of the movie is seen in the movie “Fast Times at Regiment High.” It is, of course, not the main plot point there but without getting into spoiler territory, it is a subplot which is handled in a very interesting and I think realistic way, which is all the more relevant these days.

G P

The 'smelled like soup' comment is a reference to So I Married An Axe Murderer, which you guys should check out.

Matt Gwinn

They mentioned St. Cloud at one point so I think it was supposed to be set in Minnesota. It was filmed in Coquitlam, Burnaby, White Rock, and Vancouver

Matt Gwinn

I love this movie, but watching it makes me feel like I'm deadnaming Elliot Page. Is that weird?

REDR58

Look at it this way, Elliot Page was Ellen Page during the filming and was portraying a female character at the time, so referring to the character as “her “ or “she” is sensible enough.

REDR58

I never once saw any sort of plotting on Mark’s part to “steal” away the baby or want to be involved with Juno at all. He clearly liked her, but I really didn’t perceive any nefarious designs on Juno. Anyway, speaking of actors playing against expected types, check out “Colossal” from 2016 with Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis.

Alejandro Perez Castro

Wanted to point out that at some point the timer goes faster out of nowhere and goes out of sync!

shaneth138

It's funny, I have the exact opposite experience with JK Simmons and Jason Bateman. This move was the first movie I saw from either of them so I knew JK Simmons as the sweet dad from Juno and Whiplash was actually the weird role for him. I knew Jason Bateman as the ultra douche creep lord from Juno so it took years for me to like him as a character in anything else haha. 😅

shaneth138

It's the type of shirt that becomes stupid if the person wearing it is your husband who is a douchey man-child weirdo lol.

Steve kephart

If you want another similar movie from around that time staring Ellen Page, definitely check out Whip It. I think you guys will enjoy it as well.

Brad Lowry

Simone, you've seen Rain Wilson in "Galaxy Quest" as Lahnk one of the Thermians, along with every other great comic actor not already in the main cast. Also notable are Missy Pyle as Lalliari (if you start looking for Missy you will be amazed at how many of your favorite comic character's she's played – she adds so much!) and the Main Thermian, Mathesar played by Enrico Colantoni, who famously came up with the "Thermian Walk" based on an acting class exercise. I don't know whether it's worth reacting to, but everyone should checkout "Never Surrender" the documentary about the making of Galaxy Quest and it's place in Sci-Fi Fandom.

Brad Lowry

First, I am not quibbling with our Canadian Cinebingers claim that this is ALSO a Canadian film, indeed, Jason Reitman and where it was filmed is enough. To add evidence to Dylan saying it was supposed to take place in Minnesota: • The runners/high school colors were Maroon and Gold, almost the exact Pantone values of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers... and it is common for High Schools in Minnesota to mirror the U of M colors. • The arguing couple across from Juno and Bleeker in school, she was angry that the guy cheated on her when he visited his brother in Mankato (probably attending Mankato State University in Mankato Minnesota). • Juno had a story early on about shenanigans at "Ridgedale Mall", which is one of the major Twin Cities Malls just west of Downtown Minneapolis. • When Juno went to Mark's to visit him a couple of times she said to Dad (J. K. Simons) that she drove to "St. Cloud", which is a mid-size city approximately 65 miles northwest of Minneapolis. • And up here in Minnesota we glossed over the Chicago upbringing (I honestly didn't know) and embraced Diablo Cody as "one of us" Minnesotans. Again, I'm happy with "dual citizenship" for this movie. I think that George put it best, "Minnesota, which is basically Canada!"... Yep, I think that pretty much says it!

REDR58

It’s no more Canadian than any other American set movie filmed in Canada. Not that it matters particularly much.

Brad Lowry

Jennifer Garner was indeed a revelation! The genius of the writing is that Vanessa comes off as an uptight goody-goody, while Mark is the personification of Cool Adult. Great how Diablo Cody subtly broke those stereotypes – her face was so expressive as a fragile wannabe mom, especially when she felt the baby kick. In another of those "where did this performance come from" roles for her, she was equally amazing in "Dallas Buyer's Club"! (To say nothing of the lead actor, Matthew McConaughey!) Upon rewatching, it occurred to me that the Sonic Youth (from Minneapolis) cover of The Carpenters song, "Superstar", that Mark insists that Juno check out... that version of that song fits with Mark and Vanessa as a couple. Vanessa is soooo much The Carpenters' "Top 40 Hits" persona, while Mark is pretty wealthy and upper-class, but longs for the "Rock-and-Roll Lifestyle" of Sonic Youth. I think that Juno finally saw that Bleeker – simple, unabashed, staighforward – was more what Vanessa was and that he was the one that quite literally thought that "sunshine came out of Juno's ass".

China Andronicus

Absolutely love this film. Elliot Page got an Oscar nomination for it. I’ve seen others recommend watching him in the Umbrella Academy and I can’t second that enough. Amazing show.

Justin Leone

I don't really get the impression that Mark has any sexual designs on Juno. His behavior with her is highly inappropriate, but I think it stems from a severe case of, well... arrested development, which is exacerbated by Vanessa's judgements of him. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with his desire for a less "mature" life (the loft in the city, watching horror movies and playing guitar), but it's terribly mismatched with his wife's choice of lifestyle. Some of the responsibility for that is on her, because she knows who he is, who he wants to be, and she tries to suppress his childish nature instead of either accepting it or divorcing him. They have a huge house, and he has one room, and is living partially out of boxes. And I think they've been living that way for a long time. I don't think he falls in love with Juno because she's young, but because she validates a lifestyle that Vanessa rejects. So I can't really blame him for wanting out of the marriage when she doesn't love him for who he is. It's unclear what they were ever doing together in the first place. Of course, none of that excuses his duplicity. It's a little subtle, but they imply that he tried to sabotage the adoption by putting their ad in the Pennysaver (she's surprised to hear it). And if he wasn't ready he should have been up-front about it. And it certainly doesn't excuse him crossing all the icky boundaries he does with Juno. But I see him more as an overgrown child who's in a terribly mis-matched marriage and hasn't had the emotional maturity to deal with it in a responsible manner, than a straight-up villainous pedophile.

VinnyAhhh

It's very different but Jason Reitman's follow up film to this, 'Up in the Air', is very much worth watching w/ a sorta-sleazy George Clooney and one of Anna Kendrick's early big roles.

djKENTO

I’m adopted and my birth mother was 16 when I was born. I never got to meet her. This movie is always so cathartic for me. Brings me really good feelings. Families can be anything.

Jack Urmson

It never does say “who” got the cold feet at Mark & Vanessa’s first encounter with an adoption. Mark may have been the same way the first go round too. Vanessa probably wanted it work so bad, she gave him a second chance. Something to think about.

Scott McClintock

I saw recos for Super, Whip It, and Umbrella Academy, which are all solid picks. I’mma throw in Hard Candy to round out Page’s early filmography. Also, a chill J.K. Simmons appearance: I Love you, Man. It’s another Supporting role, but it’s very much the same energy.

Jonas Buckner

I can't believe anyone can watch that and think that Vanessa is an angel. Those two were in a bad marriage before we even meet them, and she isn't blameless in this. Mark is delusional in thinking that he can still have that rockstar lifestyle, but if your partner has those dreams/delusions, you are not doing anyone any favors by just going ahead with what you want and making them pretend they want it, too. Both of them have terrible communication, but Mark isn't a singular villain in this. I don't even think he wants Juno; he just wants to be young again like she is because that's the last time he was happy. Edit - I certainly don't think he wants to go raise a baby with Juno in his city apartment. I think he just wants to go be a rockstar again. That certainly doesn't include fatherhood responsibilities.

Brandon Meng

For more JK Simmons content: please watch the Invincible series!!!!!!!!!!

Logan Kerlee

Just got finished watching this and I super enjoyed this reaction! First time watching for me as well. :) This one's super fun and emotional. At the end I was feeling all the feels. Good stuff!

Trevor S Bright

I don't think Mark wanted to raise the baby with Juno in his "loft", the whole point is that he didn't want to be a dad. I think he didn't care what happened to the kid and was just hoping Juno was into him.

Trevor S Bright

Highly, HIGHLY underappreciated comedy movie that happens to have J.K. Simmons...."I Love You, Man" starring Paul Rudd & Jason Segel. Great movie about male bonding.....or as JD and Turk would say: "It's guy love, between 2 guys" LOL

beefjerkywizard

How did I miss this reaction?!? This was one of my favourite reactions. Thank you
