JokerDanny

This is the extended edition for those wondering.

MacGuffinStuff

SPACED is the og Simon Pegg/ Jessica Stevenson/Nick Frost show (Edgar Wright directed) I hope you guys eventually watch, but definitely not yet, still a lot of movies you need to catch up on to get all the clever little references, Easter eggs, etc. No rush, but I think you'll both laugh if you do ever watch it.

Ryan Morgan

I LOVE this movie. Thank you guys!!!

Carlos Hurtado

Speaking of Breaking Bad, that gas station with the Native American Chief Sign, is the Gas station from the episode of Breaking Bad where Jesse convinces that young cashier to accept meth as payment for gas.

RipTheRipper

Requests: - Birdman (2014) - Furiosa (2024) - I Used To Be Funny (2023) - Swingers (1996) - Stir Crazy (1980) - Room (2015)

Tits McGee

YES!!!!! That is one of my all-time favorite shows! Its a shame it isn't very popular here in states.

FWPJR.

Well, I know what I’m doing tonight. I haven’t watched this movie in a very long time but I think it’s really funny, so I’m looking forward to seeing you two react to it and seeing what you think about the movie. I just hope it’s on one of the streaming platforms I have ( I only have Netflix, Peacock, and Amazon Prime right now ) if not I guess I’ll have to rent another movie off of Amazon because that’s my only other option. But it is what it is,

Spacedone

Everyone quietly making a list of all the references they didn't understand for future movie reaction suggestions.

Tits McGee

As far as Breaking Bad goes, you are correct Marie loves purple, but the other characters have color pallets as well. -Hank is usually in orange except when he goes down to El Paso where he wears very muted colors. -Walt wears green at the beginning to signify his change to meth lord until he usually goes with red. -Skyler is blue and then green when she starts getting back with Walt and then after that, it’s usually really dark colors. -And Jesse wears red and yellow.

Stretch

Made it so awkward by watching the extended version!

Stugotz

I watched this a while back but remember absolutely nothing about it, now I know why...it's pretty meh.

miniature

i have to say.. i dont really get the appeal of the movie. its... kinda dull. there are funny moments, but it just feels a lot like "hey guys remember this? remember this?? we're nerds too! did you understand that reference?!" it almost feels like a family guy joke...

Tits McGee

I disagree. There is a very thin line between “member-berries” and homage. I think this movie is in the latter category.

Amos T Fairchild

So clearly they have not seen Close Encounters. lol. Or Xanadu I guess.

Nikolai

Anyone know how to watch the extended edition in the UK? Is it physical media only?

Kinokind

Yep, been doing that, at least mentally. One of my favorites is Back to the Future's "Where we're going you don't need . . .teeth." Although in the theater I laughed out loud at the roadhouse band playing the cantina band's tune from Star Wars. Oh, and did anyone notice that the alien crew hosing down the spacecraft is dressed like the crew from Alien?

Odd Thomas

Ideally you would have watched Close Encounters before Paul, but I think you'll enjoy regardless. A great sci-fi movie in this vein is 'Flight of the Navigator'. One of the best kids movies OAT.

Kinokind

Oh, and Lorenzo's Oil is/was a movie.

Spawncalibur

Well gotta do Close Encounters now right?

CT

Pushing for this mediocrity before Close Encounters? I don't get it.

Logan Kerlee

Really enjoyed this! Had so much fun watching. :) I'd already watched so none of it was new for me but it was so much fun seeing this reaction! I was writing along with the movie but I stopped like twenty minutes in and just felt like laughing instead. :) Great stuff, you two! :D

REDR58

I will second Birdman and Room and I haven’t seen the other ones yet.

REDR58

“Lorenzo‘s Oil” (and several other movies) is also referenced in the Simpsons season 10 episode 16, “Make Room for Lisa.”

REDR58

I don’t know why more people didn’t warn them about “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” before watching this. “Close Encounters” has come up several times as suggestions for sci-fi poll choices.

REDR58

When Simone says “some people will get it” in the intro, it brings to mind a line from the documentary “This is MST3K” which is about the show of the same name (if you don’t know what MST3K is, it’s like Cinecringe on many steroids (and Joel and Mike-era MST3K is the only MST3K that matters!)) and in that documentary, one of the people who made the show says: "We never say, 'Who's going to get this?' We always say, 'The right people will get this.'"

REDR58

I would not expect them to have ever even heard of Xanadu aside from the historical reference. It would be a riot for them to watch that movie, though!

Odd Thomas

"I thought you were coming as Wonder Woman" is funnier now because Kristen Wiig was in a Wonder Woman movie. Another big influence on this film was Starman with Jeff Bridges, which is a great movie.

Opti_Frog

I wonder if this movie is better without knowledge of all the references, because they get tiring after a while. Paul is not a bad movie. It just has a really lazy script, with obvious jokes, that does not live up to the potential of a great premise.

Chase Lonnergan

I love this movie. Except for the Ruth and Moses "all Christians are ignorant hillbilly pieces of shit" trope that every movie has to throw in. It's honestly the only downside.

DM DC

This movie is great. Now if you'd like to watch something on the opposite end of the specrtum - creepy, I would recommend The Fourth Kind. I feel this is an underrated film. This also came to mind during one of your discussions about Owls. But this may creep you out. I recommend going in blind for this one. That is if you haven't already seen it. It Stars Milla Jovovich. It's a pretty unique film if you ask me.

Bennett Holleman

Jorge the room service guy is thinking about a different group frequently called aliens.

p0sthum4n

That's a tattoo on Bobby Lee's arm ;)

Sd D

Jason Bateman and Jesse Plemons are both in Game Night, a great comedy you guys would probably like.

james repka

It specifically doesn't go after "All Christians." It makes fun of young Earth creationists, who make up a tiny percentage of people who identify as Christians. Most Christians are not biblical literalists who deny the modern world and all of science.

james repka

There are two great SciFi homages out there. This one and Galaxy Quest. Both include the great Sigourney Weaver.

REDR58

I’m fairly certain that Paul rubbing his hands together before he healed something is a reference to Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid when he does this to Daniel. I cannot find any reference to this in any trivia, but it seems like it’s from that movie.

Chase Schleich

Watching Simon Pegg in this right after watching his big episode of The Boys (season 4) is so weird. You'll know what I mean after watching this weeks episode. Yikes.

REDR58

I guess no one recognized David Koechner (Todd Packer from "The Office") who was the other redneck along with Jesse Plemons. Two Todds at once!

Rupert Purcat

Awesome thankyou - a great movie. Maybe you could watch Close Encounters one day. Cheers

ChrisJayR

Great video guys, I love this movie and I'm glad you did too. I would love to see you guys watch The X-Files!

W T

Game Night has been thrown around a bunch following the odd obvious reaction, and yeah, it's a no-brainer piece of entertainment for sure. Directed by Sam Weir of Freaks and Geeks fame, John Francis Daley.

Ootlander

omg that would be amazing, I fear if they ever do it'll be just the best episodes of every season instead of the whole show.

W T

X-Files would be a freaking great watch, defo on the lengthier side - but it's basically the career-maker for Vince Gilligan and it sure shows in places. Some great episodes in there and it generally is considered pretty top-tier TV, the kind that got popular around the 00s. Mulder and Scully is probably present in George's mind for the various Simpsons references: "Human Blimps Sees Flying Saucer" or something along those lines.

W T

the slow take-off really gets their dicks hard

Odd Thomas

The X-Files was groundbreaking in its time, but I wonder how the early seasons would hold up today for newbies. Now we have tons of conspiracy and alien themed content but there just wasn't anything done in a serious way back then. What seemed fresh in 1993 might seem cliched to young viewers today.

Odd Thomas

For more Jason Bateman I suggest Game Night and Hancock

Flerb

Y'all didn't get the references to Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Great one for a future watch! Stephen Spielberg.

Tyler Foster

Someone mentioned it on a previous post, but now you *really* need to watch Game Night. You'll *love* it.

REDR58

Yes that was “The Springfield Files” from Season 8, Episode 10.

MacGuffinStuff

Jason Bateman is awesome alongside Rachel McAdams in GAME NIGHT, and believe it or not, Jesse Plemons is in that too, but he's hilarious, he kind of plays off his creepiness and it's great.

Pearl Jam

George, you’re not living up to the nerd/geek persona you usually imbue. It’s time for some Trek! Oh, and y’all need to watch ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ and then give this a rewatch.

FranciscoGios

The Roadhouse band was playing the Mos Eisley Cantina theme song.

Beddoe

I hope you'll put 'Arrested Development', 'The X-Files' and 'Spaced' on a television poll.

Mark Alex Leach

Thanks guys, I don't always watch the Patreon version, but this one was a definite. And it was such a fun ride to watch it with you. Simone's attempt to swear like Kristen Wiig was almost the highlight of the film.
