It’s been a long time since I seen Grease, im so happy you guys are reacting to it 🙌🍻

Vellu

For your consideration in Outstanding Movie Reaction category: The Great Race (1965 adventure comedy, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk) A Fish Called Wanda (1988 crime comedy, John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis) Rain Man (1988 drama, Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise) Ed Wood (1994 docudrama, Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Bill Murray) Ready or Not (2019 action horror comedy, Samara Weaving)

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Well good luck with the present and hope all went well there, George! As for MTG I test out Dualcaster Mage combos for funsies. That said, this movie is a bunch of fun to come back to every couple of years. The Bee Gees soundtrack and Travolta’s dancing is also amazing in “Saturday Night Fever” and a highly recommended watch. It’s surprisingly a terrific drama about the working class lifestyle in New York for its time.

Guillermo Antonio Ricci Alvarez

I'm almost sure Simone played Sandy...she has the looks and almost sure at school they also saw her personality was similar...or she was only an extra

djKENTO

Oh Saturday Night Fever would be a GREAT reaction. One of the few movies that people grew up with a censored version. The film was Rated R in theaters, but got VERY popular on censored TV so they released a PG version on VHS. A lot of people got the DVD/Blu-ray which is the R rated original edit and were SHOCKED at how dark and foul mouth the movie actually is. It’s more than just a movie about disco dancing. Also all the music in Saturday Night Fever is by the BeeGees and Grease’s music is all from The Bee Gees and Frankie Valli. So they’re connected in a BUNCH of cool ways.

Christopher Feiertag

How about continuing your movie musical-journey with “The Godfather” of movie musicals: “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”?

Naturekitty5309

Looking forward to watching Sing along with Simone Saturday 😊

REDR58

Yes, I hadn’t seen it for the first time until a few years ago and it is surprisingly dark!

Pam Nail

Love this movie! I like the sequel even more (though the songs admittedly aren't as good -- but I still love them!). "Hopelessly Devoted..." got the Oscar nomination because it was one of the only original songs. Most of the others had been written for the stage show and were therefore ineligible.

Jonathan Guzman

George talking about cha cha: "she will set your house on fire for calling your mom." Ah so he knows about latinas

beecroft adams

Pleasantville would be a good follow up to this.

Jimmy H

Haha! George has a type. Crocodile Dundee reaction turned into 'George reacts to Linda Kozlowski'. This Grease reaction will be 'George discovers Olivia Newton John'. Not knocking you George, great taste!

Pam Nail

Also, Teen Angel ("Beauty School Dropout") was played by Frankie Avalon, who was a big teen idol in the 60s -- sort of comparable to Zac Efron (in the HSM days, at least) or Harry Styles.

Ricardo Alanis

There is a great jazz version of “You’re The One That I Want” by The Tierney Sutton Band that I would highly recommend. One animated film that has very memorable songs is The Prince of Egypt.

Monica Alarcon

I shouldn't have seen this at work... People are looking at me funny when I sing every song... Oh well at least it's a slow day...

Tay Schumaker

High school senior ages ranging from 20 to 45

For George, who asked about "platters". DJ = Disc Jockey. Discs are round and flat. Records are round and flat. Platters are round and flat. "Prince of the Platters" - Intro for Vince Fontaine, the radio DJ personality, because it's alliteration. Grease is set in 1959. The 8-track tape which replaced vinyl didn't come out until 1964. So everything was still records.

Tay Schumaker

One of my favorite things is seeing people who watched this movie as a kid realize how dirty the lyrics are

JokerDanny

Please react to Elvis (2022)

JokerDanny

Them flying away is signifying them going off into the sunset happy.

Jeff Conaway was a good guy guys, he has never had anything bad said about him, he actually had a tragic life due to drug problems, he was "tortured" in his childhood by boys in his neighbourhood they would put him into dangerous situations, tying him up and threatening him. He also said he was molested when he was seven years old. So a sad life story but everybody who worked with him has never had anything bad to say about him and him and Olivia's sister divorced after 5 years.

Spacedone

To continue the fun films set in high school featuring people who are clearly much older theme, how about watching Porky's?

Onno Smits

I know you just recorded two so it'll probably be a while before you do another musical, but I've got to make a recommendation: Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical (2005) It's a parody of a marijuana scare propaganda movie from the 1930's. It stars some great actors, has banger songs, and is completely bonkers. You guys would love it.

Roby J

So we're totally getting a bonus video of Simone showing off her Angel Lifegain deck right? I need new ways to make my friends cry at FNM

Foggy

this was so much fun! simone, maybe the film you meant was hairspray from 2007? i’d love to see what you both think of him in that one :)

John

This was a fun watch, I might suggest Pleasantville and That Thing You Do as possible general companion movies. For movies about the high school experience across decades, American Graffiti-1960s, Dazed and Confused-1970s, Heathers-1980s, Fast Time at Ridgemont High-1980s, Can't Hardly Wait-1990s, Varsity Blues-1990s for those of us who love Sportsball

Thomas Yanez

Back when it came out, I watched this movie so many times, and played the soundtrack on cassette (and later media) 100x more. And, 46 years later, even though I haven't seen the movie in a decade at least, most of the lyrics still just pop right up on demand.

William

I definitely need to know what part Simone played in her High School Grease Musical. George, you need to get your crow bar and break into Simone's house when she is on holiday and steal that video of Simone. We all need to see it. LOL 😊😊

Cincassette

You guys should definitely watch "Rebel Without A Cause" (1955) There are few actors as iconic and enigmatic as James Dean.

Owenrock1221

Sandy's midde name is Dee. Sandra Dee Olsson, the reference is saying goodbye to the goody two shoes Sandra Dee and saying hello to the new Sandy

Vwlss Nvwls

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! It came out when I was nine, and that summer we were visiting family in Florida. My older brother and I made our grandmother take us to see it three times that summer. I never get tired of watching this one, and have all of it memorized. It is also surprising how much they leave in on t.v., especially a few choice words in the Greased Lightning song... or at least the last time I watched it on network television. An absolute classic. RIP Olivia Newton John :(

Alan Kobb

It's Grease because in the 1950s the guys used to put a product called Brylcreem in their hair to keep it shiny and in place. This product was very greasy and if you were not careful would get on everything. T-Bird is a nickname for the Ford Thunderbird, one of the most storied muscle cars in history! Beauty School Dropout was sung by Frankie Avalon, who was a teen heart throb singer from the 1950s with a few hit records. He was well known for starring in the "Beach party movies" that were popular at the time. (Think beautiful boys and girls dancing at the beach, some surfing, a bit of minor drama, a little bit of romance and film it.) It was the great-granddad of the Rom-com for date nights. George, George, George... A cherry pie??? Don't you have any sense of sexual innuendo??? OK. Think of a plump, red, round cherry. Now take off your PG-rated glasses and put on the R-rated glasses and think of a plump, red, round cherry. Any questions??? Geeze, guys! I can't always be here to explain this stuff to you! :-)

Alex Ch

In the 1960s (when this movie is set), the most wildly popular series of teen films took place at the beach, including Beach Blanket Bingo and Beach Party. The male lead was Frankie Avalon, who plays the guardian angel and sings Beauty School Dropout. The female lead was Annette Funicello, who is referred to several times in the film as just “Annette.”

Alex Ch

Or if you prefer to think of it as the 50s, Annette would still be the star of the Mickey Mouse Club.

Justtired

My favorite song is Beauty School Dropout, but I’m biased. I played the part twice: once in high school and once in a community theater production. Simone, please keep singing. Travolta first danced in Saturday Night Fever (1977), the its sequel Stayin’ Alive (directed by Sylvester Stallone 1983) and in Hairspray (2007). Well, and Pulp Fiction but you knew that one George, awesome birthday gift for your girlfriend! You’re the man (old phrase but I’m old)

Vwlss Nvwls

The 'T' in T Birds is likely Thunder, because Thunderbird was a popular car. John Travolta became popular after doing Saturday Night Fever, in which he did a lot of iconic dancing. He was already known for the t.v. show Welcome Back Kotter. You would have a hard time finding many movies with John Travolta in which he does not do at least a little dancing, in my opinion. :) Beauty School Dropout was done by Frankie Avalon, and yes, he was in the movie for that song as well. Prince of the platters means he is a radio disc jockey. Platters being records. Every time I brush my teeth I am doing that brusha brusha thing that Jan was doing at the slumber party (in my head of course). :) My theory for the end is that your mind remembers things exaggerated, so leaving may have felt like flying off into the sunset in their memories.

Vwlss Nvwls

It is hard for me to choose a favorite song, but I do find myself singing Sandra Dee quite often, especially the "HEY! Fongool! I'm Sandra Dee."

Raven Dark

I don't think he dances in that movie, though. I figured she was thinking of Saturday Night Fever. Hairspray would make for a great reaction though. Either version.

E. D.

I only can stand a certain amount of overly happy movies as my life is not so happy, so after this reaction I will have to watch two horror films and one true-crime documentary.

Shonnicus

Don't sleep on John Travolta's "Urban Cowboy' (1980). Underrated Scott Glenn performance.

nicholas hadley

Loved this. There needs to be plenty more musical reactions. For the record my absolute favourite of all the bangers in this is "you're the one I want"

FranciscoGios

The movie I think Simone was referring to of John Travolta’s other “dance off” movie is called Saturday Night Fever. The song ‘Grease is the Word’ is a favorite song of mine. If you guys are interesting of watching Grease 2, put it in a poll it might compete with the other music films.

Dustin Duvall

They also race at thunder road, between the car and location, thunder always made the most sense

George learns the true message of Grease. Change everything about yourself for your high school boyfriend

Frankie Avalon, the singer others have mentioned below was a teen idol who continues to be popular today in his 80s. He’s actually on tour right now. One of of Philadelphia’s favorite sons, he was born in the city in 1940. Also an actor, he did a bunch of “beach movies” with Annette Funicello in the 1960s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orF-jPAFMYM

REDR58

Great singing, Simone! Another good movie involving high school and some great music is “American Graffiti” from 1973. It is set in 1962 and you guys should definitely check it out. It is George Lucas‘s 2nd feature film after “THX 1138 (which you should watch) and I feel his best movie. Definitely take a look at “Saturday Night Fever.” It’s directed by John Badham who directed WarGames. “The Blob” movie that is advertised during the drive-in scene is a real movie from 1958 that was partially filmed in the town I live in as well as some other nearby towns outside Philadelphia. It’s a goofy, fun movie: https://youtu.be/J-heIT3L9Qg?si=rFMajBQUL_WhxFLv The “National Bandstand” show in the movie is based on “American Bandstand” that aired from 1952 to 1989 and was hosted for most of that time by Dick Clark. The show was originally filmed in Philadelphia but eventually moved to Los Angeles in 1963. https://youtu.be/vLLj4_KA4yA?si=ElUL0m2C78LfWg6e

I was one of the people who made it the highest grossing film of 1978. I went to see it again and again. My favorite character was Rizzo and my favorite song was “There are Worse Things I Could Do.” Stockard Channing was a household name after this. Unfortunately, she was so tied to the role that she couldn’t get any decent movie roles for years. But she kicked ass on Broadway. Then she was nominated in 1993 for an Academy Award for Six Degrees of Separation (which she had also done on Broadway). Since then she’s done amazing work in film, tv and theater. By the way, you should definitely put Six Degrees of Separation on your watch list. Interesting thing about Jeff Conaway (Kenickie) — before the film he had played the lead (Danny Zuko) in Grease on Broadway for several years. John Travolta played Doody on Broadway. But by the time film was made, Travolta had become a superstar with Saturday Night Fever so they gave him the lead in Grease.

windyWin

I assume most commonwealth people have have seen Grease or did it as part of a school production. I certainly did. Grease used to play on tv what felt like every few months. Im not sure if thats the case now since i dont watch TV anymore. I remember doing dance to Grease Lightning when i was a kid for a school production, and im a kiwi. My father had a huge crush on Olivia Newton-John back in the 70s, RIP for ONJ.

Itbewhatitbe

man if you cant figure out why its pretty creepy and funny at the same time despite the fact that they gave the entire context to their line of reasoning literally in the same sentence via the trivia, then the problem is 100% with you.

Jacob King

Sal Mineo was in Rebel Without A Cause with James Dean. That would be another good reaction. Grease was part of a weird 50s revival in the seventies along with The Rocky Horror Show and Happy Days. It was all deliberately ironic and kitsch. Hopelessly Devoted To You is the obvious Oscar song because it’s a seventies ballad and very straightforward. My song pick would be Beauty School Dropout.

JoeE

The Annette they kept referring to was annettte funicello, a big star in the 50s and 60s, she was a child star that puberty was kind to. Regarding hopelessly devoted to you being the only nominated song, I believe a song has to original to the movie to qualify. Almost all the other songs were from the musical or from the 50s

Max Krause

I was also in my school's rendition of Grease when I was in 10th grade, but I didn't have a role. I was just part of the choir and male dancers. For "Greased Lightning" our choreography involved that at the climax, we (the male dancers) would all take off our leather jackets and were shirtless underneath them. Needless to say, there were no censored lyrics, either. If you're going to have a bunch of 16-19 year old boys perform shirtless in front of hundreds of people, why care about a few raunchy lines. English not being a first language for the audience probably helped there (this was in 2006 Germany). That kickstarted my musical career in school, during which I got a bigger role each year, ending with me playing Scar in our rendition of The Lion King. And yes, the Broadway musical was the one we got the license and inspiration for the costumes from. My school went crazy with the musicals during that time. They completely filled the biggest hall in our town hall four times in two days. Two casts, each doing one show per day. That's an audience of ~3500 people each year. /watch?v=prSujXWameQ for a glimpse on Youtube into our rendition of The Lion King. It has over 200k views and comments complaining that it's not as good as the professional musicals in Hamburg and on Broadway :D

Michael

Please watch Grease 2. I believe you will like it even though it is commonly underrated.

Mastervodo

Singing Simone is Happy Simone.

mky

After she completed high school, Betty Rizzo changed her name, attended college, got her medical degree from Harvard, married Josiah (Jed) Bartlet, and became First Lady of the United States when Jed was elected president.

China Andronicus

I second the reaction to Rebel Without a Cause. One of my very favorites and an absolute masterpiece. We lost James Dean far too soon. That one and East of Eden are both amazing films with brilliant acting from Dean. Phenomenal actor.

Ludovic Ligot

Simone is a very decent singer ! 👍 But how could she play in the Grease musical ? There is no singing android in this story !! 🤪🤖

Lana Gorgeous

Boy are you guys square, that was the great Frankie Avalon singing to Frenchy. Oh and in case you did not know it Olivia Newton John was a big time Grammy nominated singer. She was a huge star when she did this movie. Also John Travolta was having a banner couple years. He starred in his biggest movie of all time Saturday Night Fever the year before. I definitely recommend that movie. Also is you like this era movie try American Graffiti. Big time stars in that movie, people like Harrison Fords first movie..................... Sandra Dee was a big time beautiful actor we all loved her when I was young https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGrDAHtCi-E; oh and Gidget was Sally Fields https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UPJJVBDElQ

Lana Gorgeous

American Graffiti from 1973 also an amazing 50's era high school movie with an even better soundtrack. The great director Ron Howard's first movie when he was only 17 or 18. Plus Harrison Ford and a very young Richard Dreyfuss. It is a totally amazing movie and you guys would love it!

REDR58

In the 1980s when I was growing up, my parents had a couple of Olivia Newton-John best-of cassettes that they would listen to during the 2-hour drive upstate in our 1983 Volvo 240 wagon to visit my mom’s family. I can’t tell you how many times I heard “Hopelessly Devoted to You” (and “Physical”) on those car trips (along with Hall & Oates, Lionel Richie and so on). Great memories! https://youtu.be/vWz9VN40nCA?si=Y8p6zOkr7MmzXuFB

Grease (both the film and the soundtrack) were such huge hits that they've permeated pop culture ever since they came out. I've heard some of those songs in so many forms that sometimes they just fade into the background. Case in point, there's a commercial currently airing for "NexGard PLUS" (prescription medication for dogs). I've probably seen the commercial 100+ times, but I mentally tuned it out, like most other commercials. But having just re-watched Grease again along with the Cinebinge reaction, the songs were fresh in my mind the next time I saw the "NexGard PLUS" commercial...and I realized they use (a cover version of) the chorus of "You're the One That I Want". Ha! In fact, the tag line for the medication is, "The One You Want to Protect Your Dog". Sheesh.

Gary Fixler

Surprised not to see a single mention of the coach, who was played by a megastar of comedy all throughout the 50s and beyond, Sid Caesar. He had a skit based comedy show (more than one, I think) called Your Show of Shows, which also starred Carl Reiner, another megastar comedian, actor, director, etc., for like 70 years, and father of megastar actor/director/etc., Rob Reiner (Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally). Your Show of Shows was super popular back then, and influenced the whole next wave of comedians, and it's still really funny. It had a bit of that over the top slapstick+sarcasm+aggressiveness of Bugs Bunny cartoons, and it was basically SNL long before SNL. They did 90 minutes of live comedy every week. Sid could fake about 4 other languages (sounded like those languages to Americans) at high speed, and while throwing in jokes. He called it "double talk". The general skit showed off his German double talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m6Czgl1acU This is Your Story is a very funny spoof on an old show—This Is Your Life—that would surprise an audience member with a whole trip through their life, with guest appearances. This skit is complete chaos, in the best way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQBlEnsylI0 Five Dollar Date, a riff on inflation, shows his ability to remember a huge amount of high-speed word play. Also some French and Italian double talk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-1WfszpG_4 The Haircuts is ridiculous, but basically just them making fun of the greaser bands, like the ones seen in Grease. The tall one is Carl Reiner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL93isW1Q70

Wayne Kryka

Ditzy secretary lady was Dody Goodman, who was known for her ditzy roles. If you liked her in this you must see SPLASH starring Tom Hanks.

Justin Feldman

Getting around to this late, but George saying "John Travolta can really dance!" made me laugh.

China Andronicus

I love that you appreciated both of them changing for each other. I way too often see people focus in Sandy changing her outfit when Danny spent nearly the entire year to letter in track for her. I think they just had him ditch the sweater so their costumes matched better aesthetically. Another film you should really watch which features the mentioned Sal Mineo is Rebel Without a Cause. One of James Dean's few films, and an absolute favorite. Natalie Wood is the third of the leads and it's so very good, also set in the fifties and featuring car racing and greasers, like this one.

Odd Thomas

A great Randal Kleiser movie to watch next is Flight of the Navigator
