PureGonzo

It’s arguably the best of the entire franchise (other than Logan and the Deadpool movies).

djKENTO

ah the reboot that got immediately unrebooted. haha.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Easily one of the best X-Men films! Fassbender totally owned the role of Erik/Magneto and Matthew Vaughn really injected a lot of dynamism and energy into the franchise. As mentioned definitely consider Days of Future Past - arguably has one of the best speedsters ever put to film 😉

Chago_kiba_Lee

I don’t know if anyone mentioned but yes that Azazal the red guy and mystic are night crawler’s parents and yes that cyclops’ brother

djKENTO

Bacon’s German is understandable and conversationally passable, but it’s CLEAR he’s American. His accent is obvious.

djKENTO

Raven/Mystique has an American accent because they grew up in Westchester NEW YORK together and are only in London for his university studies.

djKENTO

and to answer Simone’s lore question… These movies basically get 50% of the comic book lore right. They make up a ton, change characters powers, make them weaker, stronger…whatever they want at the time.

Arcade Sufi

This is by far my favourite x-men film. Even though I like the original ones too.

Poindexter

The opening scene was reshot yeah

FWPJR.

I loved X Men growing up and even into my 20’s and early 30’s ( I’m 41 now ) it was my 2nd favorite comic book, and I love the movies that I’ve seen. But I only watched up until the 3rd movie and the Wolverine movie. So I haven’t seen this or any of the newer X Men movies. So I think I might watch this and the others you two have done that I haven’t seen along with you two, but first I have to find them on one of the streaming services I have, and I only have 3 out of the many that there are now ( I’m guessing they are all on Disney plus though ) But I hope everyone that watches enjoys it and has fun watching along✌🏻

Divinerights

From what I gather about the Xmen films, there’s very bad continuity. So it’s easy to explain things away as different timelines

Odd Thomas

I hope you do rewatch Logan. Days of Future Past next is also one of the best ones - the Rogue Cut. Don't wuss out and skip Dark Phoenix either; it's actually really good.

Paul G

Origins Wolverine was predominately set in 1979. The Emma Stone characters from that movie and First Class are apparently meant to be two different people (according to the X-Men Fandom Wikia). The Origins version notably lacks the telepath abilities which were instead given to the Kayla character.

Odd Thomas

Another great Matthew Vaughn film is Stardust

Matthew Bazan

the biggest gripe i have with this movie is they killed the most unkillable character, Darwin

Vwlss Nvwls

I really like these prequels, despite what they may do to time lines. But I find all the X-Men universe movies far more interesting than most superhero/superhuman movies, because the stories and characters are much more interesting.

Guillermo Antonio Ricci Alvarez

Hank's powers are supposed to keep evolving, what he did was force his next phase but here I think they kind of imply he is blue due to Mystique's DNA

Vwlss Nvwls

I like that accidental foreshadowing that Simone did at the start of the movie... "can he coin shot it through his brain?!"

Casey Dixon

Origins Wolverine mess with the x-men time line so bad I think the film makes just pretend it dose exist. The ending of Origins time-line wise takes place after this movie. So just don't try and fit Origins in the movie time-line cause the later movies seem to erase it.

Opti_Frog

For me, this was such a lift from X-Men: The Last Stand, and First Class may have the best original score of any X-Men film. Magneto hunting down the nazis in the beginning are some of my favourite X-Men scenes ever.

Maiki

Fassbender is one of the best casting choices ever made. I couldn't imagine any other young Magneto.

Luc Zettwoog

I know this one is really appreciated by many, and personally I still find it very enjoyable, I love Fassbender's Magneto and the directing is really good but this is the point for me where I no longer feel like I'm watching movies but that I'm reading comics... Some will argue that this is precisely the point, but I think that comics and movies are two very different media, and that this formula doesn't serve the story. In a comic book, nothing is really serious, because at any moment a character can normally be resurrected at the instigation of a writer or under pressure from fans. There are plenty of scenes in this movie that make no sense at all, and I'm not just talking about the inconsistencies with the timeline of the first movies (although that's a real problem, the ones that annoy me the most are that Hank is the one who builds Cerebro, not Charles and Eric, and that Charles loses his legs so early on, even though we see him walking at the start of The Last Stand and in Origins Wolverine). Why does Eric, whose mother has just been killed by a man he doesn't know, have every opportunity to kill the man in question, kill the two guards with their helmets, throw everything into the next room while shouting NEIN in a ridiculous manner, but doesn't do it? Because the writers decided to and just wanted to make Magneto's character cool, making his mother's death absolutely unimportant and absolutely not the center of the scene... and that's how a comic book writer writes, not a movie writer. And I'm by no means belittling the work of comic book writers. I'm no connoisseur, but I also appreciate the medium - just that they're two different ways of telling stories, each exciting in their own way.

Tay Schumaker

Really Logan is really the only movie left in this you need to watch for Deadpool 3. Days of Future Past is good though. Honestly there’s a lot of other movies you’re not planning on watching you’d need to watch to get all the references and have everything from D3 payoff, plus some bts stuff you’d need to be aware of too. But at some point you have to just watch it and not worry about all that stuff. It’s meta as fuck

Tay Schumaker

Agree with Simone on the naming thing too. It’s so on the nose and cheesy

Tay Schumaker

Regarding the trivia. Originally X-Men origins was supposed to be a new spinoff thing. And there was the Origins Wolverine and then Origins Magneto. But as you read, it evolved into this

Astraeos

No, just no. They cannot skip Days of the Future Past. That's literally the best X-Men movie.

dudewheresmycar

Deadpool & Wolverine might be a little confusing if you haven't seen the Disney+ series Loki, so you might have to consider watching that beforehand. No need for both season 1 and 2. Season 1 would suffice.

Martin Roca

Now is time to watch 13 days, to understand better the cuba missile crisis.

REDR58

Barbarella Psychadella where is she???

Vwlss Nvwls

It seemed like neither of you noticed that the older, grumpy CIA agent was Stryker, and Xavier even mention how he had a son named William.

Monica Alarcon

From here on forget about continuity, it doesn't make any sense. And also if you are asking if it's according to comic lore or comic accurate the answer is, most likely, NO.

Odd Thomas

The best Rose Byrne films to watch next are Insidious and Sunshine

Shane Driscoll

I'm already looking forward to watching Simone trying to make sense of the bonkers timeline in future films.

Monica Alarcon

I hope you do watch Days Of Future Past... and skip the rest...

DM DC

The thing to remember about this film is that it was meant to be a soft reboot. So events that may have taken place in previous movies may be re-written. Also there is the next movie in this series Days of Future Past, after you see that one, it may be more apparent. Regarding the bedframe against Emma Frost: the thing to understand is that Emma Frost is diamond, the fact that the metal bedframe could cause her to crack is meant to highlight or hint at the power of Eric "Magneto". I'm of the mind that these films are to do for the X-Men franchise what the JJ Abrams Star Trek movie would try to do with the Star Trek films.

Mastervodo

Nightcrawler's birth parents have been recently ret-conned to be Mystique and Destiny in X-Men Blue: Origins #1

Hi I'm George Junior, but my friends call me Geo-Ju

Xmen Origins Wolverine took place in 1979 and first class in the early 60's. Any inconsistency you see with something in one movie vs something in Xmen Origins Wolverine, always default to the other movie. XOW is considered it's own cannon since it wasn't successful and hated by fans for the most part. They just decided to forget about it as they wrote the movies that came after. Emma Frost being a good example of this like you noticed, and Wade Wilson being another huge inconsistency from XOW.

Philipp Roensch

This one is a really good, Days of Future past should also not be missed :). As for the German, Kevin Bacon's is really forced, and he does not do the Umlauts correct, Fassbender is excellent, probably because he really does speak all those languages. The two guys he kills at the bar, are actually German actors. So if we are bringing logic into this, Emma Frost can turn into Diamond, but having no give on her inner workings, like windpipe, would probably kill her. So Erik is not ripping her head off, but can probably strangle her.

David Lonewolf Wright

They did Darwin dirty. The original X-Men comic book has Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Angel, and Beast as the real first class. Alex Summers is supposed to be Scott's younger brother. So, yeah, a lot of this movie is not canon. I think they needed another strong telepath who was a part of the Hellfire Club, so I guess they decided to brush some of what occurred in X-Men Origins under the rug.

Redrum Sacrament

You haven't watched the X Men movies yet, but you watched Logan and Deadpool?????

djKENTO

Popcorn in Bed saw Deadpool on her own before any other x-men movies too.

John

yeah, re-watching it this time vs when I saw it in the theaters I'd have to agree

D. T. Nelson

Mystique would have an American accent because she and Charles grew up in upstate New York. And, Simone, X-Men Origins: Wolverine never happened. It was just a dream.

Hi I'm George Junior, but my friends call me Geo-Ju

If they enjoyed X3 and Xmen Origins Wolverine, I'd say X-men Apocalypse would be worth it since it caps the New Class Trilogy and brings a few things full circle. I think Apocalypse is better than those two (tho not the strongest X-men movie by far LOL). Dark Phoenix, yeah... It's clear they forced that movie just for a cash grab, and half the actors didn't even want to be in it. No need to watch it unless you're a completionist. Not personally sure about New Mutants, never saw it but I hear it's bad and adds nothing to the franchise.

FranciscoGios

Simone you are not the only one that thought of Jennifer Lawerence’s character spitting off character names was a little off to some of us it was too cringe. Giving that she is a terrible actress I find her Mystique very weak.

olly.enn

(since the question came up) Kevin Bacons German sounds pretty bad. Erik's Mother sounds equally fake. Young Erik sounds good though. And Fassbender sounds, of course, almost perfect (even better than in Inglorius Basterds I think). Then again he only speaks 1-2 lines in First Class).

sarCC

Before the Deadpool movies and Logan came out, this was the one and only X-Men movie that I liked. I really didn't like the direct(-ish) sequel to this, Days Of Future Past, likely because I had no affinity for the Singer X-Men movies, and he came back to direct. And I heard nothing but terrible things about the following movies with "X-Men" in the title, so I never saw them. Also, I'm probably the only person that likes The New Mutants enough to put it only below First Class in my Fox X-Men movies ranking.

Skyruff

Great movie for a shout out!!

Skyruff

None of the X-men live actions movies are accurate to the comics. That would be impossible in that X-men comics started in the 60's and time progression alone doesn't make sense. Most of the original X-men are in their 20's or 30's now. What fans of the comics look towards are those movies that keep the spirit of the characters, world and storylines correct. Thus they like X-men 1, First Class, Logan, the Deadpool movies. They dislike X-men 3, origins wolverine, and dark phoenix as they go off the rails in many aspects. The rest of the movies have good and bad elements but only make sense as stand alone movies as far as continuity etc.

Jacob King

The most comics accurate thing these movies ever did was have completely chaotic continuity.

Nate Terry

Good lord, so much to say....The American Captain was not a war monger who wanted to start war....actor playing him is Michael Ironside...good actor...he was being prudent when the Russians said the Astral Sea was ordered to turn around and disobeyed. After Charles had the Russians blow up the ship, the American Captain literally told his comms to reach SECDEF(secretary of defense) for a new set of orders...meaning he wasn't going to do anything to escalate war himself, only if ordered to by superiors would he...which he did, cause they ordered him to fire on the beach along with the Russian fleet. Sebastian Shaw is leader of the "Hellfire Club." an X-Men villain group that likes wearing suits and dresses and has codenames after chess board pieces. Emma Frost has a flirty cat/mouse relationship with Professor X throughout the comics. The previous movie and this movie did a major disservice to her age and her diamond power which should be impervious to Magneto's metal squeezing. The directors of these shows didn't care about continuity or bothered probably with research. remember, Logan had lost his memory 15 years in the past in the first X-Men movie which was in 2000. so late 80's when the Wolverine origins movie happened. Beast was a scientist who uses a serum he developed that he tried to keep his mutation at bay....but eventually backfires. Didn't care for the CGI Beast though. PTSD often gets misconstrued.....psychologists say that a person is usually affected by post traumatic stress when they feel they did something that gives them guilt. When a soldier in war kills someone or perhaps, survives when others didn't, they can feel guilty and thus PTSD is born. Erik doesn't have PTSD, PTSD is a debilitating disorder...Erik isn't debilitated. he wants revenge. that's why he goes down the villain path. actually, if you rewatch this movie and all the X-Men movies enough times, you'll see how Erik constantly refers to humans as separate from mutants...even coining the term Homo Superior. Charles coincidently says earlier in the movie that humans immediately killed off the Neanderthal...which would be the same that "homo superior" would do to humans if someone like Magneto became megalomaniacal which of course, he eventually does. He even teaches Raven to stop seeing herself as one of them, and embrace that she is different....teaching her to be tribal....because after all, that's what he learned from the Nazis. He became the same as the Nazis. he actually believes mutants are better. remember in X-Men 3, after mystique take the "cure" weapon shot for him and turns human, he leaves her like a bad habit? Absolutely the nickname Magneto by Mystique was a cringe delivery line. I hated it the first time I watched the movie. Lastly....Riptide was the tornado guy....not hurricane guy....lol. Hurricane would be an omega level power lol. he just made whirlwinds....

Keen7981

A suggestion for when/if you get to Days of Future Past...go with the Rogue Cut rather than the theatrical release. They're both good, but the Rogue Cut adds to it in a meaningful way.

Chris Gronau

As far as Magneto vs. Emma Frost, real-world diamonds are extremely hard (resistant to scratches), but somewhat brittle (easy to crack). This is why jewelers are able to cut diamonds into faceted gemstones using nothing but fine chisels and small hammers. So, in theory, if you applied uneven pressure to a diamond, it could crack. I have absolutely no idea if this accurately reflects Emma Frost's powers in the comics, but from a real-world engineering point of view, it's at least feasible.

REDR58

I don't really like the X-Men movies as a whole aside from X-Men, X2 and the Deadpool movies, but I do like parts of most of them. I don't care about faithfulness to the "lore" or comics, but I do care about self-consistency within the series of these films and even the "soft-reboot" causes more problems than it fixes. I feel it's just sloppiness or carelessness on the part of the filmmakers and trying to rectify all of the contradictions and logical problems is an exercise in frustration. It's hard for me to take these movies all that seriously and yes it would have meant more work to make things make more sense, but if the MCU can largely do it without too many issues so too should have been the case with the X-Men movies. Hopefully now that Marvel/Disney has these characters and stories fully under their control, we will see more care put towards future X-Men stories. Yes, multiverse and timelines and all of that, but you can't use that to fix all of these problems forever. That's just laziness.

Eric Wilder

Days of future past next please

Rupert Purcat

And my favourite First Class X trivia Hugh Jackman made a memorable cameo as Wolverine in X-Men: First Class. Here are some interesting trivia points about his appearance: 1. Hugh Jackman was uncredited for his cameo in the film. 2. Jackman agreed to the cameo on the condition that he could use a swear word. He improvised the line “Go fuck yourself” 3. His cameo is notable because he was the only character in the film allowed to use profanity

Stephanie

I'd prefer them to watch both seasons, just because the second season is better than the first.😉

Garrett Mazzuca

Gotta recommend X-Men 97 after this run of X-Men movies.

REDR58

Can diamonds break? Yes they can: https://nazarsandco.com/can-diamonds-break/ Presumably Eric was expecting to take advantage of stress fracturing within the diamonds. The strange/weird/funny looking helicopter with the bubble canopy is a Bell 47 that first entered service in 1946 and has been used by a number of countries’ militaries and also by civilians. The helicopter is probably most famous for its appearance in the M*A*S*H (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) movie and TV series set during the Korean War: https://youtu.be/FgcGOWaTPdU?si=LLZLXq89zg4Yit0x https://youtu.be/mxBhhewT9Rg?si=8RYn7JXrAWubF2BE “Bad Hat Harry” (Singer’s production company) is a reference to the line spoken by Roy Scheider in “Jaws”: https://youtu.be/zSo5fNkNKlw?si=huhD14diQoFvSXg8

Great reaction from Simone! To answer the question, as others noted, the opening scene is new and was reshot for this movie. My favorite thing about this movie is the Xavier/Magneto relationship. The real feeling between the two men is palpable, and so beautifully acted by McAvoy and Fassbender. I find it very easy to believe from here that decades pass with the men still caring for one another even though they're on opposite sides of certain ideologies. Their scenes in X-Men and X2 especially evoke similar feelings in me -- they care deeply for each other in spite of everything. Really excited for your reactions to Days of Future Past.

lespea

For some reason I thought this was Days of Future Past and man was I confused at what you were watching. I was really questioning my sanity.

Diiirk706

Wonder if they'll ever do X-Men '97, cuzz they need to..........

Blake Gorf

If I'd have to guess, they probably wont watch it until season 2 drops. They have other ongoing shows and by the time they have time in their schedule, they might as well wait for S2 to drop. Then they can release their reaction with the hype of a new season.
