When are you guys doing black mirror season 4

Jeff K.

Still waiting for them to finally update us on when we can expect season three of The Wire, of course!

Maiki

Damn this season flew by. See you in 4 weeks. Enjoy, Black Mirror people!

droodly

The Wire? I've been waiting forever for season 2 of Firefly. Shame Shame...

Stugotz

You're right Simone, pimento is the peppers they put inside those green olives.

ProIndy

So, did I understand correctly, next 3 weeks will be Black Mirror Season 4, then back to Season 2 of Better Call Saul? :'D

Erik D

If you've played GTA 5 you might recognize Steven Ogg as the same guy who plays Trevor.

Inkpendude

Hmm I wonder what's gonna happen next week

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Haha my gang name would just be Vegemite probably. Also glad you guys had a fun time for the first season. It only gets better from here on out 😉😌

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Will pull out The Simpsons reference and just say “when are the pancakes coming in the mail?” haha

Lucky Lucchese

I don't think Chuck feels he needs to be superior like George said. Chuck said it in the episode he doesn't feel Jimmy earned that position. Chuck spent the majority of his life dedicated to being a top lawyer. My guess is he spent years at a top law school to become a partner at one of the biggest law firms in New Mexico. Not saying his actions are okay but I can sort of see how Chuck might feel slighted that Jimmy ends up with an office right next to his.

Jeff I.

I would suggest skipping seasons 5 and 6 of Black Mirror, and spending that time doing one or two shorter one season/limited series. IMO, the quality of writing gradually goes way downhill over the course of those seasons, and it's not really worth doing every episode. There are a couple of standouts like Aaron Paul's amazing performance in "Beyond the Sea" (season 6).

Mikebdrx

After Black Mirror S4 would be a great time to start Ash Vs Evil. 🧟‍♀️📖🙆‍♂️

Cartoons ReAct

Yes, the olives with red in the center are filled with pimento

Tenn Seven

The whole pimento scene might be my favorite scene in the entire show. "The caviar of the south". Plus, the guy that Mike beats up is the voice actor for Trevor Philips in Grand Theft Auto V.

FWPJR.

It’s Better Call Saul Tuesday, I’ve been waiting for this since last Tuesday lol I’m looking forward to watching this reaction, but sadly I’ll have to wait until tonight to watch it.

FWPJR.

I think the last two seasons are the best, so yes I definitely agree that it only gets better ( even though season one is fantastic )

Philipp Roensch

Oh, what a great finale to this season, very good how you summarized Chuck after all his intentions are out. It is heartbreaking what he does to his own Brother. Chuck's arguments as well, "the law is sacred" rings so hollow with all the bending and shifting we see Sandpiper and other lawyers do, remember die DA that was willing to do deals? It is cruel and gatekeeping of Chuck to not let Jimmy participate in the practice. Maybe Chuck was hurt too much by Slipping Jimmy in the past, but now he is a self-fulfilling prophecy, because bigger and meaner characters always try to keep him down. Why I really like about the show, we know when actors are acting, they are basically putting on a face, but Howard acting he is hiding a lie for someone else, kudos to Patrick Fabian and to this cast! Speaking of cast, Steve Ogg! Trevor from GTA V, he is great.

Jeff K.

Came to say the same. It was funny when they contrasted him to Nacho, since they were inadvertently contrasting Trevor with Vaas from Far Cry 3.

2026-09-09 01:00 To me, Chuck is not an unsympathetic character. The relationship between him and Jimmy is very complex and Chuck is a very unwell individual. I think he's keenly aware of what Slippin' Jimmy is capable of, and very fearful of what he might become. He came to Jimmy's rescue after the Chicago sunroof, and was the catalyst for Jimmy to try and change... he just also is the one standing in the way of Jimmy being able to change. I think he cares about his brother, but he definitely cares about law and order more. I think Chuck is able to see Jimmy as Saul before anyone else is, and I think the only reason he didn't let Jimmy rot in a cell back in Cicero is because he loves his brother.

Max Hassam

So enters the Schrodinger's Cat element of this show! We know what Jimmy was (Slippin' Jimmy) and we know what he'll become (Saul Goodman). But right now he's neither. Was he destined to become Saul or did Chuck's judgement of him from his Slippin' Jimmy days hold him back from fully changing? We've certainly seen him try to fly straight this season, but even still he's done the skateboard hustle on Tuco's grandma, the billboard stunt and had Mike break and enter into the Kettleman home so he's not exactly staying in legal tracks, which is one of Chuck's points. "The law is sacred. If you abuse that power, people get hurt!"

Brandon

Simone is not crazy at all. Stuffed olives totally have pimentos in them. My parents always kept them in the fridge and we had them as a side with dinner probably a few times a week.

Jeff K.

God I love this show so much… and it only gets better. It’s already this good and it’s not even close to firing on all cylinders yet.

Monica Alarcon

Me when I saw Pryce: "Look out Mike!! He's an energy vampire!!!"

squints

The intro cutting off so abruptly is a neat little detail. It's supposed to represent the amateurish editing work that would be done by Jimmy/Saul and his film student camera crew.

Paul T Hewes

The huge guy was in "El Camino" working for the escort service...

Vwlss Nvwls

If I were in a gang my food name would be Meatloaf or Hambone. I see Simone as Banana, because she is sweet and crazy.

Vwlss Nvwls

Michael McKean has always amazed me. After growing up watching him on prime time t.v. as Lenny, half of an idiot comedy duo on Laverne and Shirley, then seeing him in Spinal Tap, I always thought of him as a crazy comedy type actor. But ever time he does a serious role, those other roles cease to exist in my mind, because he is so very good.

Max Hassam

The intro song cuts off short because the creators wanted to give it the impression of a shitty low-budget Saul commercial that was probably made by a film student where they accidentally cut the last couple of notes off 😂 Saul drives a white Cadillac in Breaking Bad so no, that Cutlass isn't his future car. But! Saul does indeed wear that ring in Breaking Bad. Jimmy's touching of it at the end indicating that the ring is a symbol for Marco and his scamming days. Kim said on the phone to Jimmy that the Santa Fe law firm (Davis & Main) were coming down for some business at the Albuquerque courthouse so it would be an ideal time to meet them. See you in a few weeks!

Vwlss Nvwls

I think Pimento is my favorite episode just because of the gun scene with Mike. :D

Monica Alarcon

If I was in the food gang my name would be Cupcake... With Sprinkles...

Vwlss Nvwls

Turning off all the power and collecting the phones is more about the respect everyone has for Chuck than it is about Howards character.

Daniel Dawson

I know this is a Better Call Saul reaction, but because it came up in the post discussion, yes the Enterprise (TV show) timeline predates Star Trek the Original Series, and yes it would be great if you reacted to it! Especially because it's a Star Trek series that Simone hasn't seen!

Diiirk706

Chuck is INFINITY percent correct. Jimmy IS a ''Chimp With A Machine Gun. A C O M P L E T E S C U M B A G. We've seen it already. This series'll just further confirm it.

Jeff K.

Simone: Kim is Rhea Seehorn, but Rhea is pronounced "Ray" just FYI (watching the outro now)

8bitAndy

I feel like the corn dog is the dad joke of the food world, and that's definitely what I'd be called in the food gang.

Jeff K.

Hey everyone, found the Aussie! (I assume)

Tenn Seven

I thought he was the guy from the wanted board...

Vwlss Nvwls

Having grown up with parents who always judged me based on past digressions, I can fully understand how heart broken Jimmy was to find out Chuck had zero faith in him.

Jeff K.

I really need to dive back into that show... loved the movie, watched the first few episodes and enjoyed them but just kinda fell off for reasons I can't fully explain (because I don't remember them... haha)

SuPaTiLt

Star Trek forever please! I'm down for y'all to watch all of the star trek but I do think you should go somewhat in show release order. At least I think you need to finish TOS and watch TNG before delving into DS9 or Enterprise because there will be either moments or characters from those earlier shows that will come up and it's nice to have context.

DCray

A couple Breaking Bad references y'all seemed to miss: Jimmy talking about Belize at the bingo game. In BB he mentions to Walt that they could "send Hank to Belize" and Walt sarcastically says that he'll send Saul to Belize. Jimmy pretending to be Kevin Costner to pick up girls was also something that Saul talks about in BB.

Helly R

"He's cured!" Yeah, mental illness normally doesn't work like that. That kind of anxiety-related condition requires a lot of work.

Sergio Meira

One thing that Gilligan does very well is showing where evil comes from in people. It's not that Jimmy isn't guilty of being Saul -- as any human being, he will face choices, and it is always possible (as it was for Walter White) to choose the good path. But it is that there is also good in Jimmy, and that good could have bloomed and flourished -- just like the good in Walter could. Evil, it seems, is a choice, not a nature, in the Gilligan universe. And I tend to agree. Poor Jimmy... And consider also Mr. Hamlin, i.e., Howard. He is 'presented' as bad, as spiteful towards Jimmy. But it turns out he was just protecting Chuck. He didn't want them to suffer. The very reaction with Kim... he plays the 'bad boss' saying 'keep your own opinion to yourself' with her, then he closes his eyes, as if saying 'who am I kidding...', says 'close the door' and tells her the truth. You can see he's tired of just taking the blame for Chuck's decisions. He does it because, I suppose, he likes Chuck, and perhaps even Jimmy... but it does take something from him. It's the show giving you little hints that Howard is better than he's made to look. Again, it's his choices that define him as 'good' or 'bad'. And even Chuck himself. A lot has been written (especially taking into account what will happen in season 2) about whether or not he likes Jimmy, or as you guys suggest just wants to be 'the good one' in the family, the one who really sacrificed and studied, while Jimmy always relied on his personal charm and charisma, his capacity to make others laugh, to get everything for free. Like in the traditional story of the prodigal son, Chuck is the one who did everything right, and who gets angry because Jimmy gets stuff without having to go through all the hassle he, Chuck, had to go through. It's a feeling I can relate to. But in his case, this makes him completely blind to Jimmy and his own problems -- how Jimmy felt bad about being 'the screw-up brother', how he really wanted to improve, and, more heartbreakingly, how he sincerely, whole-hartedly loved his brother Chuck. It's his decision to go against Jimmy despite all that that makes Chuck 'evil' here. In a sense, however, he's fooling himself as much as he's fooling Jimmy. He's making sure he, himself, will not move on, will not grow, will not become a better human being, just as he is doing to Jimmy. He's being evil to himself, too. And that is... heart-breaking. I even wonder if all this psychological trouble with electromagnetic fields doesn't come from some repressed realization of what he is truly doing to himself and to Jimmy. I think Chuck cares for Jimmy. And to see him tossing Jimmy's feelings into the garbage bin, just because Jimmy is more charming... is so heart-breaking. It's very sad and very human -- I can think of a few real-life Chucks -- but it makes me feel sorry for him, too.

Anthony Villena

I didn't know that you'll be continuing to the other Star Trek series too. Looking forward to them.

Jeff K.

Jimmy is kind of like a dog. A dog wants to be good. But if you keep beating it down, you're beating that goodness out of it. Yes, Jimmy was a conman. But he was genuinely trying to be good, and trying to help people. And he still could have continued down that path, but when you are continually beaten down, well, it becomes harder to try to the right thing when it gets you absolutely nowhere. It's the whole "doing what is right, versus doing what is easy" thing.

DonkyDave

Can we talk about how smart Simone is? She sees everything coming a mile away!

DonkyDave

Always good to see Captain Obvious to the rescue

Sergio Meira

You see, here's a parallel between Jimmy and Walter White. Just as Walter was given a different, more honorable path when his old friend offered to help, even to pay for his cancer treatment, but Walter didn't accept his help because he felt he had been robbed of his righteous place... Jimmy had once chance, when this new firm wanted to hire him, to walk the good path. You see, even though he was back-stabbed by Chuck who totally broke his heart... he could still have chosen a path that would have taken him in the right direction, allowing for healing and, who knows? ultimately forgiveness. It might have saved his relationship with his brother, who, after all, did save him from prison, right?... But he didn't. And the final question is, why? Because of his scamming week with Marco? Because something in him agreed with Chuck that "people don't change", that once you're Slipping Jimmy then you'll be Slipping Jimmy forever...? Why did he suddenly start wondering about why he returned that money instead of keeping it for himelf? I guess your entire opinion of Jimmy/Saul, as was the case for Walter, depends on how you answer this question, why did Jimmy not take the right path? Weakness? Anger? "I'll show you all suckers!"? Or was it all Chuck's fault? Was Jimmy in the end free to choose, and did he make a free moral choice here, or were his emotions, and ultimately his choice, pre-determined, based on his reaction to events -- Chuck's betrayal, Marco's death? That's the basic question of this show. Why did Jimmy choose as he chose?...

Jay Willis

I was here for the conversation, lol. I loved that she didn't know the name of the olives, and George didn't know they put pimentos in olives (or was just confused by the whole thing, lol). I love me some Manzanilla olives (typically stuffed with pimentos).

memofrancisco283

Writer Peter Gould had mentioned that Howard Hamlin was originally considered to be the antagonist in the series, however upon development it started becoming more apparent that Chuck would be extremely more of an antagonist towards Jimmy

Jay Willis

yep. Chuck wanted Jimmy to just live a simple life and stay out of trouble. He never imagined Jimmy would become a lawyer like he is and "sully" the profession. He also knows what Jimmy is capable of (in a bad way) and is probably afraid of what someone like him could do with a law degree if they really wanted to (which sadly, turns out true via BB). The question really is...once there was no going back (Jimmy got his degree), he could've tried to keep Jimmy close and keep an eye on him and make sure he does operate within the confines of the law correctly. If Chuck had swallowed that pride (Hi Walt!) and just let his brother work at HHM, Jimmy probably would've become a fairly successful lawyer and stayed on the straight and narrow. He would've been fulfilled making good money and having a good career. Instead, Chuck actively works to make it harder (because it was harder for him) and inadvertently sets Jimmy on a path to Saul.

Jay Willis

Yep. Biggest what if with this show to me is what if Chuck hadn't sabotaged Jimmy's chances when he got his degree. What if Chuck had let Jimmy work at HHM? Jimmy may have turned into quite a decent attorney with Chuck's guidance and oversight, and would've probably been content to live that life with Chuck's approval and support. Jimmy's initial motivations are to mostly make Chuck proud of him and do right by his brother. Sure, he wants to make money too and be the boss and all that, but I think his #1 motivator was to make Chuck proud...and instead Chuck inadvertently set him on a path to Saul.

Jeff K.

Also, the Kevin Costner, and specifically "If you build it..." references, remind me: I really, really, really want G&S to react to Field of Dreams.

Jay Willis

While true, what would Jimmy have been had Chuck supported him when he got his degree and let him into HHM? Would he have become a Slippin Jimmy attorney or would he have been content and stayed on the right course.

AJ Lynch

my food gang name would be Lil' Sausage ha ha

Thomas Hilbert

Hey, I was wondering... Will next week be BCS Season 2? ... just kidding xD

Travis H

Welcome to the “Chuck McGill sucks” club, your card will be arriving in 10-20 business days. 😉 My food gang name would be either Pasta or Bread related. I would like it to be something that has the potential to sound cool like Cavatappi, but I know myself and would probably end up as White Bread….

CJ

This show always subverts your expectations, every time you think you know where it's going to go next it won't, just enjoy the ride.

Superpotroast

They are definitely not as good as season 2&3..

AJ Lynch

I'm stoked for star trek *switches to Mickey Mouse* Oh Boy!

Superpotroast

Can't really watch DS9 without having seen TOS and most of TNG, because of character references and TNG characters show up in DS9..And you won't get the full impact of Enterprise (or later on if you do Picard, because it's about Picard) without having seen TNG first..Voyager is pretty skippable, as it kinda does it's own thing for the most part, but there are things from that that pop up in in later Star Trek shows as well.. And I wouldn't touch Discovery or Picard with a 10 lightyear pole, but that's up to you guys..

Travis

When are you coming back to better call Saul

Inkpendude

It took me until the last season to learn that

Magnus Karlsson

Chuck is not to blame for Jimmy becoming a criminal lawyer, and not just because Jimmy is his own person with agency and free will, but Jimmy has been doing illegal things since the first episode of the show, and long before that. Chuck can't stop Jimmy from becoming an honest lawyer if that's what he wants, you can't blame other people for your bad actions. Jimmy's obstacle for becoming an honest lawyer is not external, e.g. Chuck, but internal to Jimmy himself, and this is what Chuck knows and is pointing out when he calls him "Slippin' Jimmy" and comments that the law is sacred. At a certain point enough is enough. Is Chuck an asshole for not letting his brother - who defecated through a sunroof and is on the sex offender list and is known for being a con artist and taking short cuts and doing borderline if not outright illegal things - work at his firm? Maybe, but I would probably do the same thing as Chuck in order to protect everything I've worked so hard to build and maintain. If you had a brother who was a cleptomaniac, would you be an asshole for not wanting him to work at your shop? Is it fair to say that you are "stopping" him from becoming an honest person? Or is it more fair to say that as long as he doesn't exhibit a clear pattern of long-time honest behavior, then hiring him would be tantamount to self-sabotage? And, frankly, even though Chuck is his brother, he doesn't owe him that, especially considering it would be bad for both parties. - Just my two cents, fwiw.

Magnus Karlsson

Is there a reason why no one ever points out how smart George is, considering he is generally the one who sees things coming before Simone, or are we just taking that for granted? If so, complimenting Simone and not George would, paradoxically, be insulting Simone.

Itbewhatitbe

lol first time on the internet Magnus? kidding haha, but i wager a guess most of their viewers are men, and on the internet. the guy that cures cancer would get 1000 times less notice and praise than the pretty girl that sings a song.

Chris B

"We want escalating stakes" - be patient my young padawan. Everything in the right time. But do not worry, you have no idea how escalated this might get ;)

Tay Schumaker

I remember everyone assumed that the season 1 finale was going to be Jimmy turning in to Saul and then the show after that would be the antics of Saul Goodman, but we were all wrong and what we got was better

G P

I find it quite impressive that David St Hubbins successfully transitioned his career from rock superstar to name partner in a prominent New Mexico law firm.

Angzarr

Gaslighting Simone about pimentos is not cool, George! 😆

Itbewhatitbe

i dont think you know what gaslighting means lol. not being sure, and then conceding is not gaslighting. its actually almost the exact opposite...

myinniemademedoit

Patrick Fabian is so good as Howard. He’s and amazing actor. The subtle look with his eyes he gave Chuck after Jimmy said he’d burn the case to the ground before giving it to HHM was just top notch.

Tay Schumaker

Saul wears the ring during BB yes

Villa Lobos

It’s subtle but I think there’s some thing about Black Mirror then they’ll come back the this. They really should say something.

Angzarr

I don't think you got the joke, but that's OK.

Villa Lobos

It’s classic nature vs nurture, what if Chuck believed in Jimmy with the law as much as Marco believed in him as Slippin Jimmy. Praise goes a long way, sure he had Kim believing in him but Chuck, the person he looked up to more than anyone, made Howard cast aside Jimmy. How do you think that made Jimmy feel? Over a decade of hard work for what, your own brother to sabotage you without the courage to own up to it until pressed. Why be like him?

Villa Lobos

I think he was the physical model for it too.

Angzarr

I love the titles so much. The other prestige TV shows have ever cooler opening titles? Great, let's make ours the absolute shittiest!

Angzarr

The scene with the three of them in the conference room really hits different on a rewatch, when you know Chuck's behind it all. It really sank in for me not only how shitty he was to Jimmy, but to Howard. The way Chuck pretends to be shocked and saddened by what Howard is doing is infuriating. Also my food gang name is Coleslaw. Someone getting out of line? Time to LAY DOWN THE SLAW!

Ace

First time I watched episode 10 I was like come on bro call them a butthole 🥺

JCR

I think 9 is my favorite from season 1. Great Mike episode.

John Zelinka

George: "Saul Goodman is because of Chuck..." No, I have to strongly disagree. Re-evaluate after the series is over; Jimmy is given SO many opportunities to do the right thing and he doesn't. Chuck is speaking the truth because he knows Jimmy. After such a long history of Slipping Jimmy antics/shortcuts, Jimmy has a Long hill to climb to prove himself to everyone, esp. his brother. Until he does Chuck not only has the right but Needs to call Jimmy out to keep him accountable.

Itbewhatitbe

damn you did a great job at the ultimate "taking a quote out of context" john. you took minutes worth of discussion and context, and chopped it down to 6 words and completely changing what he said lmao. just so you can refute something thats not at all what he said.

Diiirk706

like I said. As the series progresses......

John Zelinka

IF Chuck truly supported Jimmy what would Jimmy have become--we will never know but the hints are Jimmy ultimately still would have become Saul Goodman, just maybe slower to get there.

John Zelinka

"I think Chuck is able to see Jimmy as Saul before anyone else..." (probably even before Jimmy sees himself as Saul) really sums up Chuck's actions-right or wrong. He's torn between his three vertices: 1) His extreme love of the law and the code of HONOR, 2) his genuine love of his brother, 3) and the one no one talks about: his jealousy that Jimmy is always the "slick", "cool" and gregarious one who SO EASILY charms everyone while Chuck is resolute and dour and takes forever to WIN over people by attention to detail, respect, honesty to a fault and smarts. He will never win a personality contest and that HURTS Chuck.

John Zelinka

In fact until today, I thought the ONLY way pimentos came was as the center of an olive!

JBK405

This is the tragedy of this series: We know that Jimmy is going to fail at the "honest life", and it hurts every time we see him ALMOST get there. Regarding the meeting at the courthouse, Kim said that Davis & Maine had work already scheduled to do there that day, and that would be a perfect time for a meet-and-greet without Jimmy driving all the way to Santa Fe (Which is an hour's drive away). If that first meeting went well they would arrange a formal interview at their offices, but this way they could all see if they even want to proceed. I would love -- LOVE LOVE LOVE -- for your two to continue Star Trek. As a Crotchety Old Nerd, my strong recommendation is to watch the shows in TV production order. "As originally intended" as the cliche goes. The Original Series, then The Next Generation, then Deep Space Nine. Voyager comes after DS9, and then "Enterprise", which is a Prequel series that takes place before TOS. Personally, I consider TNG/DS9 to be The Peak, but there are dissenting opinions on that front.

Kevin

Glad we finally made it to the most pure soul in the show, Ernie!

Monica Alarcon

Question: How will you handle the interactive Black Mirror movie "Bandersnatch" that came out after season 4?

Ian Tellam

Star Trek Enterprise. Yeah... that was certainly... a show... that happened. :/ Strongly recommend watching the Star Trek series in broadcast order. Also it would be great if you checked out the Battlestar Galactica reboot at some point.

REDR58

I think the best Star Trek is Deep Space 9, TNG, TOS in that order and that's it. Picard is the most recent Trek I've seen and that was some of the worst television I have ever seen, at least the first 2 seasons. Unspeakably horrific garbage.

Tom M

Love episode 9. I hate Chuck more than any murderer in the BB universe. He’s so full of sh1t. The law is too sacred for Jimmy? Please. Look at the rich and powerful. Is the law sacred to them? Hogwash. It’s malleable. It’s applied unevenly based on circumstance and just plain luck. It puts its knee on the back of the vulnerable until they can’t breathe. Ok, got that out of my system. Just an opinion. :) one of the best shows ever. Poor Howard doing his dirty work.

SpankTheMonk

“I'll tell you what. You show me a reaction for all Roddenberry & Bernan Star Trek TV (and then possibly a Picard Season 3 for a capper), I will quit my current support tier right now and I go full cream cheese tier for you…”. Not Donny

Bennett Holleman

You are the one insulting Simone with this condescending post.

Sergio Meira

I see where you're coming from, and far from me the desire to forgive and forget Jimmy's flaws. My point is: these are HUMAN flaws, flaws that people often have. It does take a serious decision and a LOT of will power to overcome them, and your energy for doing so can indeed be depressed by your own brother saying "people don't change!" and "you're Slipping Jimmy!", as if saying, "you'll ALWAYS be Slipping Jimmy, no matter what you do!". One's desire to improve does not come from this unscathed. As we saw when Jimmy talked to Marco as he left Cicero (with Chuck waiting in the car outside), he wanted to give it his all. Just think about it -- a guy like Slipping Jimmy, for whom the "easy" thing indeed is to just keep living the con artist life, was willing to give something else a try. Despite his friend Marco telling him it wouldn't work (in a sense, Marco agrees with Chuck, doesn't he?). It's very hard to change, enough that I'm willing to clap for people who are giving it an honest try. I think Jimmy was. He honestly wanted to be a good lawyer, and he -- the con artist! -- was naive enough to imagine his brother would be proud of him. But Chuck -- because of his own personality flaws, worthy of deep analysis I think -- never believed in him. Changing is hard; and if people you look up to don't believe you, if you best friend Marco doesn't believe you... the pressure towards not changing increases tenfold. It's not of course a done deal. In the end, Jimmy is res ponsible for Jimmy's choices. But there is nothing wrong in saying that Chuck is indeed making Jimmy's task much, much harder than it had to be. He would have to have a lot of internal steel to be able not to break -- and he never gave any clue he had such steel in himself. Just imagine what things could have been like if Chuck had actually believed him. He says people don't change, and eventually Jimmy would become a crook even if Chuck did believe in him. But judging by the other scenes we've seen, are we really sure that's true? It seems to me the only person who really believed Jimmy could change in season 1 was Kim. (A second person may have been Howard Hamlin, who, by the end, was so obviously ashamed of the way Chuck had treated Jimmy.) In a better world, this would have been enough. Here, it wasn't. A lot, perhaps the whole of your judgment of Jimmy's character depends on how you interpret this -- how you interpret the fact that Kim's faith in Jimmy wasn't enough to deflect Chuck's impact.

Sergio Meira

What Jimmy sometimes reminds me of is a fat guy who is honestly trying to lose weight, for health-related reasons. But he's surrounded by all those pro-calorie propaganda ads, and some of the most important people in his life tell him that once fat, always fat... So he ends up binging, perhaps purging, or then if he's too depressed perhaps not... and said people just repeat, yeah, yeah, it's Jimmy you know, what did you expect... In the end, it's so utterly sad, even if you think the moral responsibility is entirely Jimmy's.

megamoo chilli

Come on George you've watched The Simpsons. The Pimento Groove. There's a big neon sign of an olive.

Magnus Karlsson

Bennett Holleman So because I'm not okay with sexist double standards, I'm an incel? What kind of logic - and insult - is that? And how am I insulting Simone by pointing out that George don't get the same love Simone does when he is right about things? That doesn't make sense either. In fact, If I were Simone I would agree and think it's unfair. Why would I take it as an insult? You seem to have a ship on your shoulder for some reason. - Also, using a sexually and romantically marginalized group of people as an insult tells me all I need to know about you as a person.

Magnus Karlsson

Riverton - I have no idea what you're talking about - which "minutes of discussion" (between Chuck and Jimmy or George and Simone)? Which 6 words? What exactly did I take out of context? What was said that was changed as a result of my re- or decontextualization, and who said it? Your comment does not make any sense.

Magnus Karlsson

John Zelinka Couldn't agree more. Paradoxically, it might actually mean that our love and appreciation for Saul is greater than these other people who, apparently, would stop loving him - or at least are afraid, unconsciously, that they would - if they recognized all his faults and stopped making excuses for him. Love that does not recognize and accept flaws in the other, is not true love.

Sergio Meira I completely agree with you that Chuck certainly made it harder for Jimmy to be an honest lawyer by reflecting back to him his own bad past behavior, as well as the less justified disbelief in the possibility of Jimmy changing for the better, but my point was precisely that "making it harder" and "stopping" (George saying several times that Chuck "stopped" Jimmy from becoming a better person/an honest lawyer) are two very different things. Indeed, one recognizes Jimmy's agency, desire and ultimate responsibility, the other doesn't, in fact, it infantilizes and is disrespectful to Jimmy in both a personal and professional context. - Since you brought it up, I think it defies credibility, to put it mildly, that all of Jimmy's actions from the time he was a boy to the grown man we see in Breaking Bad, and all his criminal and immoral behavior in-between, is due to his Brother holding him accountable for his bad actions and, as a result, and perhaps unjustly, never believed he could change for the better. (Spoiler alert) We know that people believing in him, including Kim, does not in fact make any difference in making him change his behavior, nor does the job opportunities that he's given. As I stated in my original comment, the obstacle (the self-sabotage addiction that he's so clearly suffering from, a suffering he also causes other people, most notably Kim) is not external but internal. To quote Chuck: He just can't help himself.

Magnus Karlsson

Riverton I agree, but that doesn't make it right. In fact, that's exactly the problem.

Cinebinge

Hi Bennett, please help us keep this community peaceful and civil by refraining from pointless personal attacks. Continuing to do so will result in a permanent ban. This will be the only warning, thank you.

Cinebinge

I have no idea. A sort of bridge to be crossed when getting there I guess 🤷‍♂️

Helly R

Clearly wasn't obvious to George, smartass.

Itbewhatitbe

wasnt replying to you Magnus. thats why i said John in my comment.

Itbewhatitbe

i cant believe its not obvious to you that he said it as a celebration/surprise, and not literally stating a medical diagnosis that requires explanation or examination.

Śéáń

The need to put the glaring disclaimers up every time a BB and now BCS series ends is a mix of entertaining and damning of the comment sections here >_>

Nathan Jasper

Food gang name... Durian, like Durian fruit. Cause nobody likes or wants it but it's still proud to be what it is. And it brings people to their knees with dread.

Robinson vs. Parkinson's

Foodie gang name, just call me Ribeye. Just had to get on here and say that Chuck needs to eat my whole ass. What an ungrateful, out of touch, elitist douche-canoe.

PIG

lol!

PIG

"Like a chimp with a machine gun!" I've seen a lot of shows for more than 30 years and I don't think I'll ever forget that line. So harsh, revealing, visualizing, and cutting.

Jeff K.

That's interesting. And I assume that means it's meant to be the same character. Gilligan and Gould don't do things like that by accident.

Allen Pass

I loved George's reaction to the betrayal. I really felt his reaction on this one.

Justtired

I wonder when they will be getting back to Black Mirror…. It’s not a gang name but for years I had a food related nickname at the Italian restaurant I managed. They called me Pop (pineapple on pizza) because I would make chicken, pineapple and roasted red pepper pizza in our wood fire oven. It wasn’t all that common then

Khan1001

I'm stoked too! loved the reactions for s1 BCS, look forward to s2! this show is great and gets bigger & better with every season and in my opinion ends up on the same level as BB by the end. With regards to Star Trek as you were discussing at the end, Star Trek: Enterprise was a prequel, set in the 2150s, about 100 or so years before Kirk & company. The series was ok in my opinion but I'm a Trekkie, the ratings weren't great however and it got canceled after 4 seasons, the 4th season was pretty good but the series was considered a disappointment overall. I would stick with TNG, DS9 & Voyager and watch them in release order, So after TOS, watch all the Movies with Kirk, Star Trek 1-6, STOP at ST6: The Undiscovered Country then watch TNG, DS9 & Voyager, but after you finish TNG you can start watching the TNG movies so ST7-10 if you want, (the 4 TNG movies released whilst DS9 & Voyager were still airing in the mid/late 90s) OMG! this will take years to get through! Anyway, finish TOS first and probably take a break for George's sake before getting into the Shatner movies!, they are mostly great btw! Star Trek forever! I cant wait! oh boy oh boy!

Redrum Sacrament

You two are really sharp. Already figuring out before it was revealed. It's pretty much clear to say we are seeing Chuck's true side revealed. This is just season 1. It gets better. It gets really good. Three weeks can't come soon enough. The creators Peter and Vince had nothing but good things to say about the actor who played Marco. I have Better Call Saul season 1 on DVD and in the commentary of one of the episodes, they were talking about how much of a joy it was to work with Mel Rodriguez. It's heart breaking to see Simone cry. When Better Call Saul was still coming out with new episodes, I would watch the latest episode and then watch it again with two other reactors. We watched them to the end in August 2022. A year later in 2023, another reactor had just finished Breaking Bad and started Better Call Saul and I rewatched all of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul with her. The other reactor finished Better Call Saul in August of last year. A day before she went into labor with her little boy, and now this year, we started Better Call Saul in August? Ironic lol

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

There are still good performances later on but agreed on dipping after S4. Bandersnatch is also fun but not sure how its interactivity would affect a reaction.

Noel Valdez

my nickname would be Corndog.

Thoko

I strongly disagree with your response at the end of episode 9. Chuck was not "blocking Jimmy from improving. Or from being a lwyer" He was simply refusing to allow Jummy to do that at his firm. He kept quiet about his opinions and offered support to Jimmy. He only said those things because Jimmy forced him to tell the truth.

Adam vs PlayStation

If you guys remember in Breaking Bad Saul told Walter a story about how he once told a woman he was Kevin Costner and it worked because he believed it. And in the season 1 finale we see exactly when that happened lmao. Also, the guy that Mike hits in the Adam’s apple with his pistol is Steven Ogg, the voice of Trevor in Grand theft Auto 5.

Jeff K

They always knock the casting out of the park on Breaking Bad and BCS, but man, did they ever just CRUSH the casting on Chuck. Michael McKean is such an inherently likable dude that when that reveal comes, it makes it all the more effective.

Thoko

Another point I will add, is that Chuck is allowed to be passionate about the law. If you have a brother who is passionate about crime, and you are passionate about the law and justice, then you're allowed to be quietly unhappy and untrusting of your brother, especially when you see that he is continuing with his "slipping jimmy" antics. Once a person becomes a literal criminal, other people have no obligation to open up themselves to the risk of being dragged down to that level of criminality. You lose all rights to be automatically trusted and have to earn your way back into respectability over a period of many years of proving yourself. And the fact that Jimmy essentially got this case by being dishonest and unethical (with the TV commercial and by abusing the HHM trademark rights) is a massive red flag. A famous philosopher, Immanual Kant, said that if you convince people to do something based on lies, and those people would not have consented had they known the truth, then what you're doing is unethical. Jimmy's clients would not work with him if they knew the truth of his publicity stunt. He's still a bad guy, willing to violate people's trust and consent.

Sergio Meira

Again, I see what you're saying here. In Jimmy's defense, though, it is clear that he can do good (see how he took care of all of Chuck's needs for over a year), and he himself wants to do that because he realizes "Slipping Jimmy" just isn't good for him (see his conversation with Marco at the end, when he said he had to go back to his clients). I'd even say Marco's death contributed to him realizing how bad life as "Slipping Jimmy" would end up being for him. So the question is: is he "addicted to self-sabotage" so that even a fully supportive Chuck, proud of his younger brother as a lawyer, could not have made the difference necessary for Jimmy to become an honest lawyer? And here I go back to my main claim: it depends on whether or not you personally believe that people can change. It is clear (by the end of season 1; the other seasons make it less clear) that he wanted to and had the motivation. With the help of his loved ones, I think, he might have been able to do it. But that's just my personal opinion. The only good argument against it is that he obviously decided not to go to that interview and lost the chance of getting a good start as a lawyer, despite Chuck's opinion of him. One might claim that was a bad decision made because of strong emotions; or maybe even that now that he is angry at Chuck, he wants to do the opposite of what he wanted first, i.e. earn Chuck's admiration. That's the little bit of "Slipping Jimmy" that he couldn't repress, I think.

Christopher Runyon

The actor who plays Price, the guy Mike is protecting, is played by Mark Proksch. Early in his career he would go on local news stations pretending to be a yo-yo master. He would then fail spectacularly when he would demonstrate his “skills” and it was so funny and awkward. I highly recommend you find the videos of him on YouTube doing this

Trevor S Bright

Simone is correct. "Enterprise" is a prequel to TOS by about 100 years. I think it's pre-Federation but obviously Starfleet is still a thing. I mentioned this in a DM about the timeline and the captains, but the main character captains that George was asking about are Capt Sisko for DS9, Capt Janeway for Voyager, Capt Archer for Enterprise...and Christopher Pike was the NCC-1701 Enterprise's captain before Kirk was. He's in the actual pilot episode of TOS and he's in the prequel show "Strange New Worlds". So now Capt Pike is officially a main character Captain.

Jason McQuirns

George - "Alright, let's just get right into it." ----10 minutes later----- Simone - "Who am I?" Perfect intro!

Śéáń

I'm glad to hear you guys are going to do all of Star Trek. I have never sat down to TNG, and I'm interested in picking it up so this will be a great excuse to do so. I also really want to rewatch DS9, it's the only Trek I've actually watched all the way through and loved it, but that was back in high school nearly 20 years ago and I am very eager to see it again (even if my trekkie fans who gave me the DVDs insisted I start on season 3, so I have no knowlege of the pre-goatee Sisko years.

Juan

FYI Nacho is short for Ignacio. Nacho is an actual person name not just a food name like Jack or Reuben.

Thoko

I was just watching the reaction to episode 10 and I couldn't disagree more regarding your impression of Chuck. He is the literal boss at a major law firm giving polite feedback to a junior staff member (about the apples) and you accuse him of talking down to the guy. Its not an accurate reflection of what happened in that scene at all. Chuck was a boss giving polite constructive feedback to his employee.

Thoko

Also, its kinda weird that you are still furious with Chuck when Jimmy literally was committing serious crimes for an entire week, which proved Chuck right. If one fight with Chuck was enough for Jimmy to relapse into a week of criminal activity, then Jimmy never changed and Chuck was right not to hire him. All it takes is for literally one of the people Jimmy scammed to file a complaint and then Jimmy loses his law license and the scandal would damage Chuck's company if Jimmy worked there.

PrimitiveCruisingArtist

I suspect the underlying theme of Breaking Bad and now especially of Better Call Saul is something like "the corruption in the heart of all of us." Slippin' Jimmy's little scams often work because of this internal weakness of the "marks." It's a ubiquitous corruption. We're all too willing to "put one over on someone" when a rare opportunity shows itself, like the man in the suit who eagerly cuts Marco out of the coin deal. Or rationalize skimming money from a government fund. Or betray a brother. I think Jimmy fully realizes something along these lines at the end of season one, and walks away from the interview, perhaps feeling the whole world is corrupt. He loosens his tie, and walks away from the whole rotten world of neat ties and back-stabbing grinning corporate lawyers. He doesn't want to be part of it. The whole world feels that way at this point indeed. The whole world, that is, except for his dearest friend Marco. Well, in a way. Sweet Marco, defeated by a corrupt world and the corruption in his own self. Marco loves Jimmy, and loves their mutual cynicism in the face of what is likely seen as a vile human society. Even at the funeral, the fellow smoking a cigarette with Jimmy concludes, in reference to what must be a deeply cherished ring, "Still, could be worth a couple of bucks." That scene is overlooked, but it floored me. The soul of man's eternal longing is reduced to a bit of money. At the end, Jimmy askes Mike why they gave the 1.6 million back, and concludes that he'll never do such a thing again. It's corruption of corruption of corruption, and it leaves over a million bucks lying around, ripe for the taking. Jimmy honors Marco, in a twisted way, by "putting one over" on our corrupt world from here on out.

Rob Bob

Chuck was being very pushy about something so small. Yeah, he's getting paid extra for it, but that doesn't mean Chuck can talk to him in that manner about apples of all things

Thoko

Do you know what pushy means? It means something that is excessive. It is completely normal for an employer to give instructions to an employee so that the employee does their job in the right way. (So long as the task is legal and ethical, which it is). You're totally abusing language right now, talking about "manner". He didn't shout, or raise his voice or anything. You're hallucinating.

PostMan

Hey skimming through the description for the video I don't see you mentioning when you'll be getting back to season 2. Please let us know.

Frank Knudsen

I disagree that Chuck is responsible for EVERYTHING. People have their own agency. Jimmy is held back by Chuck yes, but their relationship is soooo tainted by Jimmy constantly slipping back into being a criminal. Chuck is a douche yes but trying to paint characters into black and white is not going to fly in this show

Adam Vialpando

I wouldn't say pushy but there was something in his tone that rubbed me the wrong way. I think it will only bother you if you actually know or work with someone like this. They will mention some minor thing they have a problem with and talk about how it's not that big a deal. Yet they passive-aggressively kinda talk about how it indeed bothers them very much. I hate people who do that.

dys

Man, the closest thing I can relate to on this is helping my own brother get a job in software engineering without the bachelor's degree in computer science I earned. But he has actually worked much harder on his education than I did, it just turned out that career opportunities as a classical musician with a master's degree in music are much harder to get. So in contrast to Chuck here, I'm super proud of my brother for landing a job in my field and glad I was able to help him learn enough to do so.

Anthony Michaels

With Star Trek, the question is where to draw the line. Today’s offerings are totally inferior to TOS and TNG. It’s debatable precisely where things went south, and many people love DS9 and Voyager. But not debatable that Discovery and Picard are mostly hot garbage and at some point the people running the show literally despise the characters and fans that made the franchise great.

Sckmnky

My gang name would be Turkey Neck. One of my favorite Southern dishes. Idk but Simone is giving me Potato Salad vibes.

BobbyDigital

This intro had me freakin dying. The whole Pamento and white bread thing... 🤣🤣🤣

BobbyDigital

Please do Pluribus! You guys will love it. And there are a ton of breaking bad references in it.
