Now everybody from the ‘313’ put your motherfuckin’ hands up and follow me!

Mike FromOz

I love the spaghetti song!

MPH

Yes!

maikeru

lmao the thumbnail 👏

For many years I didn‘t even know the spaghetti line was in the song (or I forgot it) even though I listened to it from time to time. Then years ago when ppl were quoting and joking about it, it didn‘t cross my mind that it was really in the song. Only last year or so I found out "mom‘s spaghetti" was really in the song.

George: “He might have been making music longer than I’ve been alive.” Me: *cries thinking about how My Name Is came out my senior year of high school and now I feel old*

I’ve lived in the metro Detroit area my entire life. A few tidbits for you: —The significance of “8 Mile” as the title: 8 Mile Road forms the northern border between the city of Detroit proper and the wealthier Oakland County. For decades there’s been strong socioeconomic segregation via ugly racial and other factors. —Papa Doc turning out to be a complete poser named Clarence who attended “Cranbrook, that’s a private school” is directly connected to the 8 Mile divide: Cranbrook isn’t just a private school, it’s one of the most prestigious in the state, is quite expensive and is located about 20 minutes north of 8 Mile Road. —Also connected to this: “Everybody from the 313” refers to the 313 area code, which used to indicate a Detroit phone number, while 248 or 734 indicates Oakland County or beyond. —Cranbrook is also where Utah Senator, former Massachusetts Governor and 2012 U.S. Presidential nominee Mitt Romney went to high school. I actually attended *public* high school with 2 other members of the Romney clan, one of whom is his niece. Ronna Romney, Later Ronna Romney McDaniel, who you may have heard of as being the chair of the Republican National Committee during the Trump Administration. She actually dropped “Romney” from her name purely because Donald Trump doesn’t like her uncle. The Romneys have a long history of being one of the most powerful political families in Michigan. Mitt’s father, George Romney, was once the governor of Michigan and then the HUD Secretary under President Nixon. He was actually a leading candidate for President himself against Nixon for awhile during the 1968 primaries. The larger point is that the racial/economic divide between urban Detroit and suburban Oakland County plays a VERY powerful role in attitudes of the residents of both in the film as well as in real life, although it’s not quite as stark as it used to be.

Phillyman!!

Glad you enjoyed the movie. Surprisingly i haven’t seen many reactions to this movie. Absolutely classic 💯💯

Phillyman!!

And the rap line “you have been at this plant so long you’re a plant” means you have become this place your identity is this place. Don’t quote me just my opinion of what that line means lol

Jeff K.

I’ve always interpreted it as he’s been stuck working there so long he’s grown roots and become a plant, stationary and planted in the ground there.

There definitely are 'stand-up sports movies' where we see comedians going through it. Right now the only one that actually comes to mind is "Down to Earth" with Chris Rock. I doubt it will ever win a poll, but it's hilarious so you may want to watch it on your own.

Kial O'C

I was really expecting a joke to be made on the, “That’s a wrap on this episode…”

mcfierce24

Eminem's first CD "Infinite" came out in 1996. George, when were you born?

Jeff K.

Since it was asked... favorite Eminem song? Tough call. I'd honestly probably go with the title track to this movie's soundtrack. I know that Lose Yourself and Cleanin' Out My Closet get all the hype from this movie's soundtrack, but 8 Mile is so good. The beat is fantastic. Guess Who's Back is up there for me, too. It's one of those songs that I haven't listened to in years, but as soon as I hear it, I'll be able to do like 80% of the lyrics from memory.

Aisara

Was hoping Walk the line had won the poll hope you guys watch it anyway

Love the movie. Love the thumbnail. Love the Simone rap. Do not love that Brittany Murphy is gone. :( RIP Brittany Murphy

Sheens

Look up behind the scenes footage of the filming of this. In between takes, they let some of the extras have rap battles with Eminem. You get to see him truly freestyle, and it's fantastic

Jeff K.

I'm pretty sure, related to that, there's footage of Em doing rap battles from before he was famous floating around on YouTube. Dude is legitimately unreal when it comes to freestyling.

Oliver piercey

Infinite from his first album of the same name is his best song

Feignorance

In my opinion Lotto won that 2nd round. That would have been a great alternate ending.

There's so many great songs of Em's to love. From his earlier stuff I love "96 Bonnie aned Clyde" where its basically him and his infant daughter disposing of his baby mommas body. But its all in baby speak talking to his daughter while she makes cute little baby noises, I never knew you could make murder sound so cute and adorable. haha "The Marshall Mathers LP" was one of those rare albums where i never felt the need to skip any tracks, loved every second of that album. I was obsessed with the song "Rap God" for the longest time. I actually really hated it the first time I heard it then one day something in my brain broke and it turned into the most awesomest song I'd ever heard. And I would play on repeat for hours as I tried to perfect the speed verse where my mouth would be running faster then my brain. I was so proud when finally mastered it. Thought I was King shit lol, Then new songs would keep raising the bar till eventually I gave up on my amateur rap career, its mind boggling how people can rap that fast! Some of my faves from that era arev "Lucky You" and "Godzilla" (Gr8 music video!!!) And I love some of his silly stuff like "My Band" with D-12. The line "My Salsa makes all the pretty girls want to dance and take off their underpants" still makes me giggle and the boyband parody kills me everytime. If anyone de c ides to check these songs out do yourself a favour and make sure to watch the music videos not just listen, they make the songs so much more enjoyable

BoredLittleLady

Answering Simone’s question, if I had to choose, I guess my favorite Eminem song is “When I’m Gone”.

Danny Bryant

Movie like this for comedians, yes. Punchline 1988, Tom Hanks and Sally Field.

Happy Hanukkah

My trailer park neighbors. Sorry, I meant "neighbours."

Happy Hanukkah

0:34 Say no more. :-) 0:43 Be serious, George! As if Michelle Pfeiffer could have anything whatsoever to do with rap! :-P 0:56 Congratulations on your newly discovered skill, Simone! 1:03 Careful, George. Simone is about to leave you for Riggs & Murtaugh.

Mike FromOz

I was originally going for "The Wiggles", but I don't think they're as well known as they are over here, heh.

Andrew

According to Eminem, the most gifted freestyler he'd ever witnessed was the late Juice WRLD. If you want to watch something truly unreal, check out Juice's freestyle on Fire in the Booth (ignore the host Charlie Sloth's shrieking, he's an acquired taste, lol). Most of the guests on Fire in the Booth pre-write their stuff, but Juice shows up and annihilates all the tracks off the dome. Really impressive.

Shiby23

i opened it and was like this better be like 40+ minutes. before the time loaded i realized FK its music is gonna make it a 30 minute video >.< I got 8 mile on Tubi but its got commercials. I'm gonna have to play the pause and sync game.

DonkyDave

George is insanely good with these thumbnails

Dan Halstead

And what isn't licensed music is all "FK'in FK'itty FK" lol

Happy Hanukkah

I'm a plant?! Well you're a vegetable! They eat off of you!

HeyHeyJK

Yeah, just seeing this made me sad about Brittany. She was so great in everything she did.

HeyHeyJK

If you haven't already, PLEASE, for the love of all that is holy, go watch the live cover of "Lose Yourself" by Kasey Chambers on her YouTube channel. Just her and her banjo to start, and the emotion in it is insane. When the band kicks in I just wanted to burst into tears out of sheer joy. It may be the greatest cover of a song I've ever heard. Please please please watch it if you haven't. Your life will literally be better for it. 'k, love you guys, bye.

underAtack

I'm up in the "8-1-Oh" myself...

You guys were mentioning about how that parking lot was both rundown and yet extravagant; Detroit was the birthplace of the automobile industry, and for many decades was an incredibly prosperous area. However (and this is all to the best of my recollection on the subject, so please excuse any inaccuracies in the details), due to the North American Free Trade Agreement being signed, which made it incredibly cost-effective to import things from around the world, the car companies all found that they could greatly increase their profits by moving their vehicle production facilities overseas to countries where people will work for pennies in our dollars, and then just shipping those vehicles to the U.S. under NAFTA. Without the auto industry to support its population, Detroit saw a mass exodus of its people to other cities, most notably Flint, Michigan. Back to the original point, though, you can (or could once, in many cases) see some truly beautiful architecture that has degraded with time and neglect through lack of maintenance, as the city hasn't had the tax revenue to support its infrastructure (if it's any indication, I've seen dozens - if not hundreds - of listings for Detroit houses within the last decade that were for sale at one point or another for under $1,000). It's very sad, because it was once one of the most desirable cities in the country to live in. There is a bit of hope, though, possibly...I have heard that the city may be poised to become a tech hub, due to the low cost of land and possibility of lenient tax laws. I don't know this for certain, but if that's the case, it'd be a wonderful resurrection for the town, and those people who have managed to stay in the city deserve to experience that kind of economic shift and see their properties increase in value after what they've been through. This is ancillarily related; I love my state very much, it's an incredibly beautiful and (often) friendly place to live. But we sure do have THE WORST POSSIBLE judgment when it comes to picking our political leaders.

Angel Baby

Y’all have to react to varsity blues

Jobbe Smit

His mom totally reminds of people with untreated BPD, horrific for all parties involved.

Blake Gorf

This thumbnail is so good.

Alexander Kirichenko

i know of a same style of movie that I know you are going to love, and maybe educate Simone, it is called Runaways (its about the band, and the concept), stars Kristen Stewart (who proved that she can act, since this was in the heat of the sparkly vampire era) Dakota fanning (little girl from war of the Worlds) and Michael Shannon

Tyler Foster

I just watched this reaction, and while it's very old at this point and you will probably miss this comment, I *have* to recommend Bodied (2017), an incredible indie film that digs into whether or not there are ethics in battle rap. Very funny, really clever, would inspire a ton of conversation -- and it was produced by none other than Eminem himself, and written by an actual battle rapper. It's an amazing movie and so funny and interesting in its exploration of where the line is in this kind of competition. I wish I could say it would be a huge view-winner on YouTube...although the movie does have an interesting history as the first film (of five) picked up for distribution by YouTube itself during the period where YouTube Premium was "YouTube Red."
