Mallrats - Patreon Version

This is one where I'm glad you didn't do the extended version. I love it, but it has an overly long opening that has little to do with the main plot - it takes 30 minutes for them to even get to the mall. It's definitely meant to be seen by people who already love the movie. This takes place a day before Clerks and the story kicks off with the lead finding out about Julie Dwyer's death - the girl from the funeral in Clerks. Jay and Silent Bob never mention the shenanigans at the mall the day before, because Mallrats hadn't been written yet. But in-universe I love the idea that they get mixed up in so many adventures that the mall wasn't even a blip on the radar to them. I have a 3 disk special edition that included The TV edit and that version is pure hilarity. There's alternate clean dialogue for almost every line in the film (or so it seems). For various reasons Jason Mewes didn't show up on the day he was supposed to record his lines for overdubbing. So they ended up finding someone to do a half-assed impersonation of Jay and it's pretty wild to hear. The voice will change back and forth between Mewes and the other voice actor all throughout the same scene. 😆

Snoochie boochies was a big stoner line throughout the late 90s after the movie came out. Along with the singing and dancing Brodie does in the elevator. Just as a side note since George says he reads all these in the AMA and the comments can be a cesspool sometimes. We all love you man, your sense of humor and insight are part of what we love about the channel. Keep up the puns, jokes you just being you and thank you.

I first saw this movie in late 1996 or early 1997. I went into my older brothers room to see if he had anything to watch and I found Mallrats, Total Recall and Akira. Talk about a goldmine, especially to a 16 year old kid lol. I watched all three that night, don’t recall the order.

Timothy Burrows

“That kid…is back on the escalator!”

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Haven’t checked this out in a long while but hope you have enough fun with these films to get to “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” - my personal most watched comedy of my high school years and a silly good, in-joke filled time haha. “Chasing Amy” is the most mature film in Smith’s early catalogue and may surprise y’all too. Fun as always 😊

kbobravo

Loved the reaction. Please continue the ViewAskewniverse. Plenty of us will keep watching.

I think Clerks just has a few better relatable characters, and does a better job of the nerdy deep talk that gets meaningful. I get Mallrats is more of an offensive ensemble of nerds, doing a South Park basically. Jay & Bob skits are hilarious, the recurring bits are fun. Just, more goofing, less message for me.

Spacedone

I'm looking forward to you watching Clerks 2 for the best Jason Mewes gag ever. Re: the studio wanting to replace Jason Mewes, this might have had something to do with Mewes getting addicted to heroin right before they started filming Mallrats.

Monica Alarcon

Simone: "I thought his name was Stanley"... It Is!!! Stanley Martin Lieber

djKENTO

you went with the right edit. The Extended cut is only available physically as far as I know, and Kevin Smith doesn’t even like it. Also no the order is Clearks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and THEN Clerks 2. You got a while before Clerks 2 homies. (oh you got it)

Jacob

You will never please everybody with what edit guys you chose to watch, somebody will always be upset. Its just the nature of fan bases and the job you do. The only thing I would request is that you add the runtime/edit choice in the Patreon description so I don't have to search through your intro to find which version I need to obtain every time there is a new upload. This is 100% an ease of use request, I personally love the long intros and would love even longer reviews at the end, hearing you guys discuss things is what makes your channel uniquely yours. I'd just rather be able to watch the intro naturally and not have to search for which edit I need and go back and watch it again when I have the edit I need.

Also a fun fact that a few people know & don't is that Randal from Clerks & Brodie both have the same Cousin Walter, which indicates that they're cousins as well. There were a few comic books that explored more of the essential characters in the View Askewniverse which included Randal and Brodie attending Cousin Walter's funeral as they discussed how Walter was an odd guy as we all know were explained from their separate stories about him.

I have loved this since seeing it in the theater, and the soundtrack is awesome as well. I find myself repeating lines from this one quite often, especially "I think the audience would agree with me there". If you want some real fun, get the DVD and listen/watch the commentary track... funny and informative. I was so happy to see Shannon Dougherty in this, and so sad recently when she passed. She was always my favorite one in Charmed :( RIP Shannon Dougherty Funny fact, when I was moving from AZ to TX, one of the job interviews I had was with a woman named Brenda Dougherty... I always found that rather amusing. :D

I just time-traveled to today from one day in the future to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIMONE!!!!! It's actually tomorrow but I got too much time travel shit to do tomorrow, like time travel into today to wish her a happy birthday for one. Then right after typing this, I have to go to 1918 to find 29-year-old Hitler to give him pictures of Charlie Chaplin hoping he will use them as inspiration to grow his mustache, instead of the ridiculous handle-bar mustache he grew a few years later. So yeah, super busy guys, I gotta split. But hope Simone has a happy birthday tomorrow, and I hope I convince a certain someone to change his stupid mustache. The handle-bar look just doesn't work for him, trust me.

He was always Silent Bob, even in Clerks. And the directors cut of this movie has a whole like 30 min that gave a different, similar reason for Brandi ending up on the game show. But it was not very good at all, and slowed the movie down.

JohnB

It's okay Simone, it's safe to go to the mall now. There are no crowds there.

Simone's Coconut Squire

The girl who dies in the beginning to kick off the plot is the girl whose funeral they go to and disrupt in Clerks.

Vwlss Nvwls

Kevin Smith put off filming scenes with Jay, until he was able to convince the studio to allow Jason Mewes to play the part. He eventually filmed a scene and the studio liked it enough to agree. They originally had a problem with Jason Mewes because Mewes was always high/stoned/drunk. Even in the director commentary track Mewes is passed out for most of it. :)

Here in the Philadelphia area we have the 3rd largest shopping mall in the US, the King of Prussia Mall, and it’s got great food courts and lots of stuff other than women’s clothing stores (AND a Lego store which I definitely have not spent too much money at) and the mall keeps getting bigger!

Tay Schumaker

This is a fun movie and reminds me a lot of the 90s, but boy is there some bad acting and dialog in here

Mastervodo

Simone was on fire today! Best intro in at least the last month, and I am shocked George doesn't know about Canada's only Pop Icon, Robin Sparkles.

akaTheBARON

"We usually just go with what seems to be most readily available" is honestly the best way to go about it, especially since most people recommend movies and don't usually (sometimes, but not always) clarify which version you recommend until it's too late and they've already uploaded the reactions. And guilty as charged, I can't recall ever recommending a movie and saying which version I recommend. And it's not always cut and dry like "Well extended cuts are always pointless cash grabs and the added footage ruins the movie" or "The extended cuts always make the movie better" because either can be true depending on the movie. I know you two do the best you can and sometimes you have to just make a judgment call with little to no information about which version should be watched, so by default the most readily available version makes sense. Someone did mention putting the runtime in the description so we at least know upfront and I totally agree with that, but other than that, I have no notes. Keep on trucking.

OMG One of my favorite movies to rewatch every once in a while and laugh at, and I'm the first one shouted out on it :) Made me smile. I'd love to see you continue down the View Askew catalogue :) Also, something I always think about asking, but never do, I was wondering if Simone had ever seen one of my old favorite TV series (It's older and I assume George probably would not have), have you seen "Dead Like Me"? It's a wonderful show and seems like something you may enjoy, even off-channel. Thanks for the fun reactions!

REDR58

To wit: the extended version of “The Abyss” is the superior version! And it’s the one S&G watched.

Keen7981

Yup, this. Jason Mewes was problematic for the studio because for most of his life he has struggled with addiction. He's been clean for many years now and has family, but for most of his appearances as Jay, he was struggling. Sometimes struggling so hard that Kevin Smith even ended up telling him that if he didn't get clean he would never invite him back and, considering they are "hetero life-mates" in real life, I can imagine that would be difficult to take coming from Smith.

Tyler Foster

It is, although unfortunately it's basically only useful if you have already seen one of the versions, because it's explaining the differences in details.

beefjerkywizard

The actor who played Brandy was also Sean Connery's daughter in The Rock. My favourite cameo is the producer of most of Kevin's movies (Scott Moiser). He plays the assistant in this one and Snowball/anger hockey guy in Clerks. Him and Kevin met at the Vancouver Film School

beefjerkywizard

Also, Stan was so excited to be in this movie. His cameo in Captain Marvel he can be seen reading the script for Mallrats

MacGuffinStuff

I think it's so ironic that Kevin Smith is Silent Bob, if you've ever seen or heard him in podcasts or public speaking, he's definitely got the gift of gab, he talks A LOT, but he's a great raconteur, really entertaining to listen to. A lot of actors from Clerks and the View Askewniverse, Walt Flanagan and Bryan Johnson were the two guys at the comic shop roughing up Brodie and TS, Walt is wearing a View Askew hockey jersey. Also, Jeremy London (T.S.) and Joey Lauren Adams (Gwen) played a couple in Richard Linklater's "Dazed and Confused" (highly recommend), and Kevin Smith has said Richard Linklater's first movie "Slacker" inspired him to make "Clerks", I haven't seen it, but I understand it's like a lot of Linklater's movies in that it doesn't really have a plot, but still manages to be interesting. Thanks for the reaction, I actually forgot how fun this movie is, please do watch the rest of these movies. Snootch to the muthafuckin bootch yo! 🤘

REDR58

The actor playing the security guard (wearing the hat) “La Fours” is the Danish actor/bodybuilder/stuntman Sven-Ole Thorsen who has made over a dozen movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was in “Predator” and “Conan the Barbarian” and “The Running Man,” among others.

beefjerkywizard

I've attended a couple of his live shows and yep. He certainly can talk lol. Both were pretty awesome because it didn't feel forced or nervous

Ricardo Alanis

Simone, the actress that you thought was in Liar Liar (Jennifer Tilly) is not the same one here. That is Joey Lauren Adams who stars in the next Kevin Smith movie you’ll see, Chasing Amy. She and Kevin Smith dated actually. I used to actually get her confused with Renee Zellweger.

Monica Alarcon

I always laugh at Shannen Doherty ATTEMPTING to play drums, she has no idea!!

Odd Thomas

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is the best one imo. Maybe Yoga Hosers for Cinecringe though? It's a so-bad-its-good movie.

Odd Thomas

Great Shannon Doherty film: Heathers

REDR58

Heathers is yet another of a long line of movies from that time that I could’ve/should’ve seen, but never did. I would love to watch it here as a reaction.

REDR58

Um, well, speaking of Charlie Chaplin, “Chaplin” (1992) directed by Richard Attenborough (who played John Hammond in “Jurassic Park) and starring Robert Downey Jr. would also be a good watch here.

Ricardo Alanis

Not sure if already mentioned but the girl that died that caused this whole game show issue is the same girl that dies that gets Dante and Randal to go to the funeral in Clerks. “She died mid-backstroke”.

Kevin Rogers

Thank you for the theatrical cut! The first time viewing for any movie should always be the theatrical cut.

Trevor S Bright

I'm not sure if this is Stan Lee's 1st theatrical cameo, but his 1st live action cameo was in like 1989 in the TV movie "The Trial of the Incredible Hulk", the 2nd of 3 TV movie sequels to the 70s/80s "The Incredible Hulk" TV show with Lou Ferrigno. "Trial" was also the 1st live action version of both Daredevil and Kingpin (played by John Rhys Davies).

Tanx

Loved these movies back in the day. Worked at a service station through high school into college and we used to talk about Clerks all the time. Manager even made the shoplifting sign from the movie and hung it in front of our register. When me and some friends rented the VHS of Mallrats, we watched it 3 times that night and immediately ended up getting our own copy. They do get considerably sillier as they go along, but still funny. The thing about his movies is that if you watch them close together there are a ton of easter eggs all throughout that you can catch. Brodie talking about his cousin Walter, which is probably the same cousin that Randel talked about in Clerks that died trying to suck....you know. The girl that died mid backstroke is the same one from Clerks who was knocked out of her casket by Randel. Rick Darris, the guy that gave Donte all the crap about being out of shape, is the guy that they talked about Gwen screwing on the pool table at the costume party while dressed as the Bandit. Willam that couldn't see the sailboat is "Snowball" from Clerks but played by a different actor. there is a Hicks character in basically every movie, in Dogma he was a newscaster. oh and the security guard, La Fours is named after a character from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid called Joe Lafors. can't wait to see how you react to the next adventure of Jay and Silent Bob.

I was going to comment that the girl trying on all the underwear was Joey Lauren Adams, that she and Kevin Smith started dating during post-production for Mallrats, and that Chasing Amy was partially inspired by their relationship, BUT someone else beat me to it. So, instead, I'll answer one of your other questions: I've never been on a dating show or reality show, though I did try out for a gameshow when I was a little kid. Unfortunately, when it came time for the part of the audition where they test to see how personable you'll be on camera -- the first time I ever did anything like that -- I ended up getting shy, being too quiet, and didn't end up booking the show, so I don't really have a particularly interesting story of personal experience there. HOWEVER, I have an ex-gf who was on one of the big dating shows that used to be very popular years ago (though it was in the show's later years, after the popularity of it had mostly waned). She said she was initially excited to go on the show, but then the whole thing ended up just being a weird experience. First of all, when the cameras were on, the host was super friendly and personable, chatting with her, etc. As soon as the cameras stopped for a commercial break (or for any other reason), he immediately turned away, ignored her completely, pulled out a little handheld mirror, smoothed his eyebrows and whatnot, and said things to his reflection like, "Ooh, yeah... Daddy looks good tonight." According to her, that is a direct, word-for-word quote of one of the things he said to himself in the mirror while she sat awkwardly beside him. Second, she picked one of the three guys and they went on the date. She said the guy spent the entirety of the dinner talking about his bowel problems and the colonoscopy he'd had recently, as well as some surgery they were going to do for his issues. In great detail. Even when she tried repeatedly to change the subject. So, yeah, the date didn't go well. On this particular show, they'd bring the people back for a second appearance to see how the date went and ask them if they wanted to go out for a 2nd date (if yes, the show would pay for it; if not, the show gets some drama and, if the first date was disastrous, a crazy story which the audience would eat up). After the incredibly awkward (and apparently never ending) dinner conversation, she was not at all interested in going out with the guy again and was going to say no. BUT, before the taping, a producer called her up and told her the guy was super sprung on her, he really wanted to go out with her again, he couldn't stop talking about how great she was, etc, etc. She felt bad and thought maybe she should give him another chance, so, on the show, they both talked about how great the date was and what a great time they'd had together. When the question was asked, she said yes, she'd like to go out with him again, he said yes, he'd like to go out with her again, and, apparently, as far as the audience was concerned, a love connection was made. After the episode was over, she talked to the guy to set up the next date. It turns out he wasn't really interested in another date either, but the producers had called him up before the show and told him that she was super sprung on him, really wanted to go out with him again, couldn't stop talking about how great he was, etc, etc. In the end, they just split the money for the second date and didn't bother going out again since neither of them was really into it.

When it is time to choose a 'shorter' TV series to react to I hope you'll consider 'Clerks: The Animated Series' (2000). It has only 6 episodes.

As someone who has a lazy eye (under control), I cannot see the magic images. This movie made me feel for that guy. In the 90's before I realized why I was furious that everyone could see something that I couldn't.
