You guys would love 2013 Rush!!

Marko T.

Yes! I have been waiting for this reaction. Alien: Resurrection is better than people say. I like it.

Jay Davis

Done with mah grocery shoppin this Sunday morn just in time fer some Alien 3 goodness. Let's go to church! (edit: for George: secret vegan 10x more dangerous than secret gluten)

pinkdino99

Theatrical or unofficial cut ?

Dazzler & Em

Yeh!! hopefully this leads to the prequel films including romulus😁😁

Amos T Fairchild

Good luck. I don't watch this one. Annoys me too much. I'll just watch the outro. Lol. Maybe watch 4 for laughs if you do that one.

Odd Thomas

There's no S: Alien 3.

Jay Davis

My understanding is it's the Assembly Cut which, I think (I hope) should correlate to the Special Edition available on Amazon. (Apparently, Special Edition is just remastered Assembly Cut to fix up the quality issues Assembly had; correct me if I'm wrong here.)

Amos T Fairchild

I find vegan food more acceptable if I know what I'm getting. That way you know why it tastes a bit different.

JediLounger

I am looking forward to you guys watching Alien 4. It is just an OK movie, but it is one of the weirdest main stream science fiction/horror movies ever made. I saw it in theaters in 1997, it was a trip for me to be sure as I had never seen anything like it. There are two cuts of the film, and the director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, clearly says in the intro video that it is a "Special Edition", not a "Directors Cut". I prefer the Special Edition cause of the different ending, but the overall story remains the same. You have watched one of Jean-Pierre Jeunets films already, Amélie, but I would really appreciate if you would watch his earlier work, Delicatessen (1991) and The City of Lost Children (1995).

neilaslayer

It was not a happy ending, but it was a fitting ending for this grimy universe.

Marko T.

I think Alien: Resurrection should be watched before the new one. It has callbacks to the whole series.

Spacedone

Yeah it's a bit more entertaining than this one, mainly because of Ron Perlman and Brad Dourif being in it.

Jasbro

Romulus probably wont be available on digital for a few months yet but you should try and fit in Promethus at some point, Covenant isnt required but it was an ok sequel to Promethus.

REDR58

George you went into an apparently all vegan place and everything in the menu is labeled vegan, and didn’t like it? That’s a you problem. Sorry. No offense. As a vegan (since 1996) I would love to find a place like that and fortunately being near a major city that’s easy to do.

Spacedone

One of the reasons why I don't particularly like Alien 3 is because I read the Dark Horse comics Aliens mini-series as a kid which continued the story from 10 years after the Aliens movie, with a grown-up Newt and Hicks as the main characters and back on Earth, where the company get their Alien and Earth ends up slowly being overrun by them. That story was just so good and it ruined any actual sequel to Aliens for me.

Cinebinge

oh no im aware im fully responsible for not reading the fine print first. but as i said during the discussion, what threw me off my guard was the fact that the dishes were titled in its original non vegan name, with no indication of what it is except in the small print under it, which to your first point, the restaurant was not that "apparent". imagine going into a place called "big kahuna burger" and you see in big letters the first item says "double patty burger". instead of "double beyond meat" or something like that. my mistake was to only look at the name of what i ordered, not the small print. in this case, one of the things i ordered literally said "unagi nigiri" as the dish title. and Unagi has only one meaning, Freshwater Eel. So it felt deceptive to me that it was called Unagi when literally zero percentage of it had eel in it. imagine if the opposite occurred and a vegetarian went into an indian restaurant and saw the menu and ordered an item they've ordered elsewhere a thousand times, Aloo Gobi. of which the dish is ALWAYS made as vegetarian with potatoes and cauliflower. and only in the fine print does it say "contains goat meat", rather than Aloo Gobi with Goat. or if you ordered what on the menu says "Hummus", your expectation would be a regular hummus made of chickpeas, only to find out after a few bites that the hummus has ground pork in it, not even Halal anymore. Of course no restaurant would do the reverse because meat is more expensive.

Amelie W

In the category "that didn't taste like I expected" my friend M is the all the champion. The way he learned not to drink juice of the carton was, instead of orange juice he drank raw pig's blood that his mom had planned to turn into sausage. Hmm I wonder what the alien tastes like. It's funny to see your theories about how they're going to escalate in this series where there's never been any overarching theme or mission to begin with. I mean just going from horror to action in Aliens was unforgivable to some fans, and then they got five chefs together to make this genre soup, and past that there's not even any attempts at inventing as far as I've been able to see. Not that the further sequels lack merit as movies on their own, but their connection to the Alien"verse" consists only of "let's do another Alien movie cause people haven't had enough of that creature yet."

Ph4ZeD

Can't wait for you guys to watch Alien Resurrection, Prometheus and Covenant!

JediLounger

I just finished the movie with you guys. Watch Alien 4. Don't skip it. If you want more stuff about where the creatures came from, you should watch the other 3 movies. Also you should consider watching the special features for Alien 3, the uncut version of that documentary pulls no punches and places blame exactly where it should be.

Odd Thomas

There are good things in both cuts imo; the ending in particular is better in the theatrical cut, with the queen bursting out as Ripley falls. Alien 4 is the weakest, yes, but it still has its moments so you should still watch it.

Daniel Popp

If anyone is interested, I recommend reading the original Alien 3 story written by William Gibson (available as a novel or comic book, I prefer the comic). It's waaaaaay better than the film (I admit, the film has some merit), and there are story elements that would've meshed perfectly with what is shown in Prometheus and Covenant. I don't want to say anymore to avoid spoilers, but it's a great story that I think would've been better for the film.

Nicodemus Archleone

The theatrical cut omits much of the character work and relegates most of the prisoners to red shirt cannon fodder. There's no romance plot with Ripley & Clemens. The plan to trap the alien is unsuccessful and concludes with the explosion. Golic just kinda dissapears after the scene where Clemens is killed. Basically the theatrical is a rehash of Alien but in a prison. Oddly, there's stuff in the theatrical that was (justifiably) cut from the Assembly version. Originally, the Alien was birthed from a prisoners dog, hence its more quadrapedal movement as Xenomorphs take on some physical characteristics of their hosts. Cutting that out spares you the rather traumatic scene of a rottweiler yelping and writhing in agony before it dies. Also, Ripley's death is worse. The queen is born just as Ripley jumps. Meaning this beloved character had to suffer her worst nightmare and unimaginable pain instead of the relatively quick and noble death you saw. Alien 4 is a decent film. However, It's certainly the weakest of the quadriology and you can certainly skip it and not lose out on anything you'd need to know before Prometheus.

Monica Alarcon

You might as well do Alien Resurrection, I like it much more than Alien 3, at least the theatrical version, I haven't seen the Assembly Cut, which I'm about to do...

Monica Alarcon

Also the original Aliens comics from Dark Horse are great. They are sequels to Aliens and they have a teenage Newt, Hicks and Ripley in a total war with the Xenomorphs on Earth.

Logan Kerlee

Guyyyyyyyyys I haven't started the reaction yet - but WHY DID YOU TITLE IT "ALIENS 3?" lmao, this movie's title is Alien 3! xD xD xD lol, this is the sort of thing that irritates the hell out of me. :P

DeAndrew Greene

You guys should play Alien:Isolation at some point. it's a great addition to Alien lore.

REDR58

I loathe Alien Resurrection to its core, (despite some wonderful acting), precisely because of the implausibility of X happening leading to Y, none of which we can discuss here without massive spoilers.

Mike FromOz

A great reaction, George and Simone! I liked George's thumbs up as Ripley fell into the furnace, heh. Like you, I very much like this version for stripping it back to the one Alien. In the theatrical cut, they don't have the alien burst out of the Ox. Instead it comes out of a dog they had at the prison. That's why it looks like and runs more like a dog. The theatrical version also has the queen start bursting out of Ripley as she falls into the furnace, and has her grab hold onto it to keep it with her. Looks really cheesy. This version is so much better. I also like having Prisoner Gollick call it a 'Dragon'. This lends creedence to these guys being like a medieval monastic order, and the medieval thought of dragons being an avatar of Satan. Him saying "tell me what you want to do next" could be seen as him falling into temptation away from the other 'monks', leading to the destruction of all but one of them. A good early effort from Director David Fincher. At least one of the prisoners showed up as one of the Space Monkey's in Fight Club (the guy that tried to SA Ripley and ended up sacrificing himself). I would also recommend watching Alien 4. It's a lot more tongue in cheek, but actually does have some good characters in it. Get ready for some derp, though 😂

James Hadden

I actually quite like Alien 4 overall despite a few big issues I have with it. I’d much rather rewatch that than Prometheus and Covenant

REDR58

I meant to say in my last comment about the "Newt" prop below that during the commentary for the Assembly Cut of Alien3, it's mentioned that a life-cast was made of Carrie Henn (Newt) during the production of Aliens. This was used so a lightweight prop of the actor could be constructed for Sigourney Weaver to carry around at the end of Aliens. Carrie Henn herself was too heavy for Weaver to hold for an extended amount of time. Part of that life-cast, the face and body, was used or remade into a body prop for Alien3, incorporating layers of "flesh" and a ribcage and to be used during the autopsy scene, but it wasn't used as intended. Part of the scene involves a live stand-in body double (as Henn had aged out of the role, of course) and part is the life-cast of Carrie Henn. I highly recommend the commentary for the Alien3 Assembly cut and you can find that on the DVD or Blu-ray.

Ian Tellam

On its own merits Alien Resurrection isn't a bad film at all. But it's best treated as surreal piece of Alien speculative fan fiction rather than being part of any particular continuity. It's got some interesting direction (one thing I like about the 'quadriology' is how all the directors bring their own personal style to the series) and I feel that knowing a fourth Alien movie didn't really make much sense given the story was effectively 'over' they decided to go kind of off-the-wall with it, which I kind of appreciate. I'd take Alien Resurrection over Prometheus any day, which is also nonsensical but boring and unfinished with it, and tries to retcon the Alien story in ways it shouldn't have been.

Vwlss Nvwls

I liked the idea of this movie, but I feel like most of it was just not carried out well. If it were not for Charles Dance, I would not have enjoyed it as much as I did.

Tyler Foster

I see people are already discussing it in the comments, but count me as one of the people who thinks you should just watch Alien: Resurrection if you're going to watch every other one. As I've mentioned a couple of times here, I think it's good for you guys to watch potentially contentious sequels like this and Resurrection just so you can have your own opinion on them. Resurrection is interesting as a film by the director of Amelie, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and there's some good stuff in there even if it's not entirely successful. Note that while there is also an alternate cut of Resurrection, the theatrical cut is probably better -- there wasn't actually major additional footage that Jeunet wanted to put back in so I believe one of the major added sequence is just in storyboard form, and it was mostly done just to give all four films additional cuts for the 2004 box set that contained the four movies.

djKENTO

yeah from what I understand the extended cut of Resurrection puts in more of Joss Whedon's cornball jokes like the opening bug sequence.

Monica Alarcon

Oh I forgot the Doctor (from Doctor Who) was in this one...

Brandon

I haven't seen the theatrical cut since I was a teen, and this is my first time seeing this version. It's a big difference, but I don't know if I'm fully turned around on liking the movie now. Still a lot better than Alien Resurrection, though. I remember that the alien Xenomorph bursts out of a dog instead of an Ox and the queen inside of Ripley definitely pops out of her chest as she's falling to her death. I even remember it cutting to a close up as she's falling and she has this satisfied look on her face that her and the queen are dying together.

Tim T—

I still like Alien 4, even if it is a touch weaker. It has Winona Ryder with a pixie cut!

Hans Czajkowski Jørgensen

George: Since you're a fan of Terry Pratchett, it might amuse you to know that Pete Postlethwaite apparently was Terry's first pick for the role of Sam Vimes, should any movies ever be made based on the Discworld books. Personally, I can kind of see it. But for some reason, my imagined Vimes is bulkier than Postlethwaite and has a bushy mustache :)

CT

Great job, guys! I'm happy you weren't too put off by the greenscreen puppet. I'll add a vote to also watch Resurrection. It has a lot of issues, but it also has baby Tuco.

CT

Paul McGann is so good as Golic. Any fans of his should watch The Rainbow (1989), for reasons.

pinkdino99

Appreciate the heck out of you guys watching this, and this version ! Hopefully other reactors will jump on when this blows up. This film is the textbook definition of studio interference. They were hobbled immediately by Sigourney refusing to do the film if there were any guns in it. She was campaigning against gun violence IRL at the time and resented the excessive gunplay in Aliens. The initial idea was to be on a wooden spaceship that was a monastery and actually started building sets for this idea. They also hired another maverick director, as was the Alien tradition. There was no finished script whilst shooting. The studio consistently got involved and then cut the film to heck in the editing room. Fincher disowned the film stating openly that Se7en was his first movie. This version is 2/3 a great movie only collapsing in the final third. The theatrical cut got rid of the whole Golic (not Garlic) plotline. The Dark Horse comics carried on the story from Aliens following a 20 something Newt, her android boyfriend (not Bishop), Hicks and later Ripley as they try to take Earth back from a xenomorph apocalypse. It's really bloody good, and the sequel that fans of Aliens really wanted.

Opti_Frog

Edit: George, Ripley is most definitely the main character of Alien 4. Watch it. I think you will be surprised. I know i am in the minority but i think the only reason to watch Alien 3 is to be able to move on to watch Alien: Resurrection. I also think that Resurrection is the victim of groupthink. I mean, everyone KNOWS that it's the worst of the original quadrilogy. Well, i think it's far more interesting, creative and entertaining than Alien 3 or anything that came after in the franchise. Though i haven's seen Romulus yet. That being said, i have never seen the assembly cut of Alien 3 either. Let's see if this version can salvage anything from this miserable and depressing mess. Edit: No, not really. So they added 30 minutes but removed the best shot in the theatrical version, Ripley cradling the chestburster while falling into the fire.

Joanthan Skidmore

I have always preferred 4 to 3, it's much more fun. I also really like Prometheus!

E. D.

I think you should not skip Alien 4, it’s far from being unwatchable and it has interesting characters and visuals. I‘m seldom for the "ppl say it‘s bad so we‘re not gonna watch it" because do not let others decide for you if a movie is bad, watch it and decide for yourselves. ps: Jean-Pierre Jeunet is a great director; he‘s the french Terry Gilliam

SpankTheMonk

Thank you for continuing the Alien series 🫶. I also feel that Alien vs Predator is a watch to consider. I enjoyed it for what it is and I am not blind to its issues. Also Alien vs Predator Requiem I don’t remember it very well but at the very least it is a stepping stone to Prometheus and through to Romulus.

Chase Schleich

What's grosser than eel? Vegan eel..... I'm trying to eat while George is telling this story and I'm having a hard time keeping it down.... lol

REDR58

I forgot how good the movie sounds with a surround system when all of the prisoners are running around the lead mold tunnels.

Chase Schleich

STOP! You do not need to watch any more Alien movies before Romulus. Romulus takes place after James Cameron's Aliens. You don't have to watch anything else. In fact, watching anything else will actually hurt your viewing of Romulus, so stop here. Romulus will be out digitally in a few weeks.

Chase Schleich

You don't remember Requiem because you never saw it. None of us did. We all watched a black screen for 90 minutes and then the credits rolled. That was literally AvP: Requiem.

Thomas Yanez

Didn't they say "Romulus" was set 20 years after the events of "Alien"? That would put it between "Alien" and "Aliens".

FranciscoGios

So as you guys may know by now, the comments and some past comments on other films, some studios don’t really go 100% with the comics. Hicks & Newt were killed after 3 days in hibernations, it took the Xenomorph 3 days to almost whipping out the prison colony. Simone & George the only face hugger that can incubate a “Queen embryo” is called a Royal Facehugger. You guys probably missed it, Ripley knew it was a queen because she felt its thoughts. Alien Ressurection is very good, that film is the last movie in the Alien Timeline. You guys want to know how the Xenomorph came about Prometheus & Covenant will answer that for you plus a few different Alien types. This Alien runs in four legs, because the embryo takes its host DNA. 🤓

Ludovic Ligot

I'm glad that you both liked this "Assembly Cut" ! I had doubts about Simone's reaction, but... shame on me, I guess ? 😅 As the fourth movie is called "Alien : Resurrection", you should watch it and discover what the title really means... 😉

Grumblefunk

YEEEEESSSSSS I didn't realize you were doing this one, this film is all vibes, time to roll a doobie snack and get into it!

FranciscoGios

An Empress Queen can lay eggs of Royal Facehuggers, the Queen in the movie Aliens was just a regular Queen 😳.

Ken

This was the first time I have watched the Assembly Cut, I really liked it but enjoyed the Theatrical ending better.

Grumblefunk

also the Scottish Jailer is the same actor from American Werewolf in London who told the joke at the Slaughtered Lamb :D

TechPriest

Man, can't find the assembly cut or special edition for rent anywhere. Appears to be buy only.

droodly

Just adding my voice to the please watch "Alien: RESURRECTION" choir! It's my favorite Alien movie.

Charles

It's on Vudu/Fandango to rent, make sure it says special edition, that's the one

SpankTheMonk

Now you know why so many people hate on the story decision of Alien 3. I for one don’t mind, obviously I personally would like happy endings but it is such a strong choice to do this and alienate many fans- pun intended. I feel this film is good even the theatrical. This is, in my humble opinion, a decision like Logan where you make some heavy decisions to characters and story. Sometimes it works out financially/critically and sometimes it doesn’t but i really respect the chance taken.

Angela D. Mitchell

I hate this movie and refuse to acknowledge it exists. Except here in this comment. :D

SpankTheMonk

The theatrical still works. But not as well as this version.

Tim T—

Comparing with Kirby's and Kidby's drawings I can definitely see that.

REDR58

That is Brian Glover, who was also in “The First Great Train Robbery” (aka The Great Train Robbery” in the US) from 1978, directed by Michael Crichton (who wrote the novel Jurassic Park). It’s an excellent film.

Alexrandom

Just because George said "everybody hates Alien 4" I want to say that no. Mostly the American public does. It's not my favourite but it's incredibly interesting. The great thing about a franchise like alien is to have a different director's perspective every time. (Same with mission impossible that are now getting pretty repetitive since it's always the same people doing them. Up to 5 it was at least always different) So really if I have to say one thing it's to welcome the fourth one, it's not perfect but it has got great stuff in it :) Way more interesting than Prometheus and covenant that are both incredibly dumb and give us close to nothing new. The last one is just boring because too scared to do anything.

Opti_Frog

Nope, can't hold it in, i have to make another comment. Killing off Newt and Hicks at the start of the movie is so fucking off-putting to me that it makes me hostile towards the rest of the film. Not because i care so much about the characters, but because it completely shits on the ending of Aliens, story wise. Especially if you watch the director's cut of Aliens with the death of Ripley's daughter reinstated. At the end of Aliens both Ripley and Newt have found surrogates for people they've lost. I have issues with Aliens, but that is pretty damn powerful. The final shot of Aliens is a close-up of Newt's face (Ripley in the background) as she gets to sleep peacefully for the first time in forever. And she'll NEVER FUCKING WAKE UP. Sorry Newt. In a few weeks or months you will have drowned in your cryopod and your found mommy will take her own life shortly after. This is in my mind every time i watch Aliens since 1992. Fuck this movie. Oh, and it's boring too.

Swede for the table

i totally agree! tho i think the 4th is my favorite of all. But objectively i agree with you. The hate people write about the 4th is insane! Prometheus and covenant are the worst in the series since Ridley wanted to explore other concepts than xenomorphs!

Swede for the table

Exactly!! the groupthink hate against alien resurrection is insane! If you ask someone "why do you hate it/why is it the worst", they usually cant reply with anything sensible! Its like they read its the worst, and followed along. Probably didnt even give it a chance.

Swede for the table

#important WHEN YOU WATCH ALIEN RESSURECTION, do the THEATRICAL CUT, not the the extended version!!! #important #important

DM DC

Pete Postlethwaite was also in The Lost World: Jurrasic Park. I had initially seen the theactrical cut. I think from what I had read before long ago the reason people were not a fan of this film was due to how Hicks and Newt died in the very opening of the film. That was always my take. I for one really liked this movie (even the theactrical cut). The diference between this and the theactrical cut was how they came across the crash of the EEV, Charles Dance didn't spot Ripley on the beach, there were additional scenes with the prisoners not in the theactrical cut. Also the biggest difference was that the alien in this was birthed from a dog rather than an ox; that one of the prisoners had-which wasn't even featured in this version. Most of the additional footage though if you go back you can tell by the static sounds during some of the dialog. That was the main thing that stood out to me. There is also a shot of Ripley falling into the furnace where the alien queen bursts from her chest but she holds onto it as she falls taking it with her. I would recommend watching Alien: Ressurection - but go into it blind. Personally I think it's a rather fun film with a really great cast.

China Andronicus

It’s always hilarious to me when Ripley comments that she’s never seen the xenomorphs move like that, when really it’s because they’re animated with bad CGI. Charles Dance was definitely a good looking man, and underrated. I hate how quickly he got killed off. Fincher has a few overrated films but is beyond skilled. Se7en is one of the greatest ever. The man used for the sin of lust features briefly in the fourth Alien film. He has long been a favorite of mine because that scene in Se7en is such a supreme example of acting.

Ed R

George's food rant cracked me up. You guys should watch "The Menu"

ChiefWill15

I’d check alien resurrection out, it’s campy fun, while absurd it’s entertaining.

Tanx

Lol i still have some fun watching 3, but I think it is my least enjoyed movie of the franchise...and I am including AVP1 and 2. BTW Hicks is actually Schrödinger's Cat, he is both dead and not dead depending on how much Aliens media you consume.

Philipp Roensch

Even as a vegan with an appreciation for imitation foods, I totally agree with George - food declarations and naming should be quite clear, anything else is fraudulent. Vegan restaurants should be proud if they have a good imitation, or at least advertise it as such. We don't want the American boneless wings with bones (recent court case allows for that BS). Still have to postbone this watch, waiting to get the right edition :)

Cory Garron

From George's opening rant, I gathered that Simone doesn't allow him to eat all day. The Matarichary is terrible! Support for George!

Cory Garron

I'm pretty sure this was my first time watching the "Special Editon" (as it's called on my Blu-Ray set). I'm pretty sure I've only seen the Thretratical version once. This was better than I had remembered the Thretratical version, that I watched once about 15 years ago. However, that might be because of George and Simone's commentary.

Philipp Roensch

To be fair, the movie still pisses off some fans today, disregarding characters so quickly only to make room for a lot more "game over man" sayers. But Fincher did no wrong here, he directed the hell out of it, it is beautiful, and especially this cut feels epic. Just a bit too long-winded in its religious messaging, could have cut a prayer session to tighten it up. The alien CGI is not quite holding up but plenty of other cool effects, still practical, make this an enjoyable entry.
