mojo shivers

I liked Kevin Smith’s first two films, but Chasing Amy was the first of his movies that I ever loved. It displayed a maturity in the writing and the themes he touched on that wasn’t present for Clerks and Mallrats. When Holden and Alyssa get into it, when he just can’t get past her former relationship and sexual history, I thought to myself that I’ve been there. I’ve been in that exact situation. And when it dawns on him that she really was the perfect girl and that he’s lost her, it hit me hard due to personal experience as well. I’m a sucker for bittersweet endings when they’re nailed perfectly. And this is one of my favorite bittersweet endings because it leaves everyone dissatisfied but nothing is cataclysmic bad—no one died, no one is bitter, and no one is physically worse for wear. There are just thoughts of what once was and what might have been, and there’s a bit of hope still thrown in as if Rilke was right, and no feeling, good or bad—is permanent.

Given this movie stars Ben Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams, petition for you guys to finally watch Dazed and Confused. (And even Jason Lee was on set the whole time for that movie, since he was dating another person in the movie.) EDIT: And it's funny you mention Joey Lauren Adams reminds you of Renee Zellweger, because Renee has a small part - basically she's an extra - in Dazed.

This one really grew on me a lot. I saw this when I first was getting into the Askewniverse as a teenager and I didn't mind it but didn't truly get it. However growing up and having my own similar experience (not to this extreme though), when I watched this again for the first time in a while a few years ago, it really touched me. That whimper Joey does during the rain confession scene still gets me a little choked up.

Matt88g

Kevin smith was dating Joey Lauren Adams at this time

Matt88g

Also Hee Haw was a country themed sketch comedy and variety show

faultylogic

Is Tusk part of the View Askew universe?

Mastervodo

I thought Joey Lauren Adams had such a great performance in this movie. Far and above any of the other actors or actresses. But there's always something that makes me feel weird about adult women who have child-voices, like JLA or Jennifer Tilly, for example. Makes something in my brain go "Danger! Danger!"

A lot of people say "Chasing Amy" is Kevin Smith's best film, so I'm not surprised that you two also liked it the most. Every film in the View Askewniverse is autobiographical to some extent, but this is the one that is most directly based on Smith himself and also his immediate friends and family. According to Wikipedia, he's said "The character of Holden is the closest to me I've ever written (casting Ben was aesthetically wishful thinking perhaps)." This was another one of Smith's films where the studio offered him a huge budget if he cast bigger stars (David Schwimmer, Drew Barrymore, and Jon Stewart for the three main characters). But just like "Mallrats" he refused to recast and so took a much smaller budget to get the people he wanted.

I wish that Kevin Smith had of kept on with the kind of tack for his films after this. Not that I don't mind "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", or "Clerks 2", it's his following ones where he just descends a bit too far into childish humour that kind of disappoint me. Might have been his weed use, or Jason Mewes' drug addiction, I don't know. But I think he is a better filmmaker than people give him credit for, and I think he should really try again to do something as heartfelt as this, especially now that he has confronted some childhood trauma of his. I don't think he should feel like he has to fall back on the old kinds of humour he has been using to be liked. I think something more serious like Chasing Amy would be well worth attempting again. My friends and I, fans of "Clerks", saw this when it was released at the cinema. Really enjoyed it then. But one thing I was really glad is Holden telling Banky in really strong terms to knock off his homophobia. Back in the 90's that was still rare, and to have a character say "you're my best friend but if you don't cut this shit out I am going to knock your block off" was really great, especially from someone who was so influential on the zeitgeist of the time. I knew you'd both love this. Great reaction G&S!

Hee-Haw was like Hillbilly SNL

Galactic Cannibl

Hee Haw was a country music variety show with skits and music with a lot of famous country singers and musicians

Byron Abrahams

Absolutely my favourite View Askew movie as well. Joey Lauren Addams was magnetic!

Rachel W

Smith and Joey Lauren Adams were a couple when this was made.

Chasing Amy is one of his best movies for sure. I enjoy most of his films on their own terms even if they aren't all high cinema. My favorite is probably Red State as it comes kind of out of nowhere and I really want to see his new movie "The 4:30 Movie" as it seems like another one of his semi-autobiographical, heartfelt stories which is what he really excels at. He gets a lot of guff for riding his Jay and Silent Bob characters but the dude genuinely makes films he wants to make and does it with his friends. He gets so many big actors in his films, even today, that I feel like if he was a bad dude none of them would keep showing up for him. Ben Affleck and Rosario Dawson are long past their need to do random indie movies, so if they sign on it is the material or because they want to hang out with Kevin and make a fun picture. It certainly isn't the money. Smith is very open about the tight budgets he gets due to his track record of making weird little movies that aren't always commercially viable. I respect the dude and that he still makes what he wants. He might be the only one of the folks to come out of the indie movie boom of the 90s that still makes "indie" movies.

So glad you did this reaction can't wait for the next one! Urkel was referring to the character from family matters.

UnSafeStu

This probably Kevin Smith's best movie but it not my favourite. That goes to Clerks 2.

Dwight Scarn

I honestly think the quality of his films went downhill when he started getting stoned all day literally. But he recently quit i reckon his films might level up now lol

Lex Kuzma

Glad you guys liked this one so much.

Kenneth thomas

not that its a personal drama like this one, but Red State is another one that I think showcases what he can do as a writer/director. Red State and Chasing Amy kind of feel like they could have been made by a totally different person when compared to all the others

Adam Wetstein

i always get this mixed up with the stupidly premised catch sarah marshall. ead slap

clh35

I mean, it's not the greatest movie and the puppet thing was shoehorned in there because Jason Segal likes puppets, but what's so "stupid" about the premise of (Forgetting) Sarah Marshall?

clh35

I must be the only person who thinks this movie doesn't hold up. It's odd that people are lauding Holden as a hero for shutting down Banky's homophobia, while he's literally running victory laps over turning a gay woman straight. Yeah yeah, love conquers all and whatever, but, in the 90's, it still wasn't widely accepted that a person could be gay at birth. Bisexuality was a punchline and anything outside of that was never mentioned in media or pop culture (including this film). With that context, the movie is pretty much supporting the idea that it's a choice. Our hero then proceeds to spend the rest of the film being either a jerk or an idiot or both. And Joey's voice... omg. I feel bad for her, because it certainly stifled her career irl and it's not her fault, but sound is important in a film and man, it's just GRATING at times in this one. For the record, I'm comparing watching it now vs seeing it in the theater a quarter-century ago. I was a big fan of Smith and the entire cast and I loved it. Today, while there are some very funny scenes (mostly involving Jason Lee), the story is just obnoxious. Let me have it.

Will Sofer

They talk about that in the reaction afterthoughts.

Will Sofer

Pretty sure Tusk and Red State are their own things, and not set in the same universe.

Happy Hanukkah

3:58 For shame, George! Here I thought you were familiar with Greek mythology. You've never heard of Delphi? :-P

Adam Wetstein

You are right. It worked for Noel Coward so yes i know i keep mixing this up with a movie that he pursues a lesbian

Robert Cooper

I go back and forth on this movie. It is definitely a cringey look at a lot of childish characters, which, as you notes, was kind of Smith growing up in public. But Jesus fucking Christ, "What's a Nubian?" just SLAYS ME EVERY TIME I SEE IT. That, and the cow flying over the wall in Holy Grail are the two things in life that will make me die laughing every time I see them.

mojo shivers

Yeah, this was the first Smith film where I recognized myself. I’ve been that dumb a** who has gotten indignant over a gf’s history. I’ve been the a** with a dumb solution that only makes it better for himself and no one else. Sometimes it’s better to see folks onscreen who aren’t smooth or slick, but better reflect those who make things worse by being themselves and have to come to terms with that to move on. And, yeah, “What’s a Nubian?” is a killer line. Lol

Trevor Rotan

Alyssa is a great character, but I think Holden gets too much hate. She could have just casually said when they were on the swings “no, I was with guys when I high school too.”

Simon Ham

I was around these Veiw Askew dicks back in these days.. They didn't understand (Fuck you Harry Knowles)and don't hold up anyway. I'm glad that director grew up

StonyD

Lots of things don't measure up when you use modern cultural ideology on older movies. The only way to accurately judge a movie is to judge it of its time. Plenty of things suck and it's because they sucked back then and it hasn't changed, not because modern ideology is so much better or advanced that it open up any worthwhile analysis of subjects beyond what has already been considered. It's just what is currently accepted, just as this was accepted in the 1990's. This was a bold movie to tackle this type of subject material head-on back in the 1990's. Time hasn't diminished that fact. But trying to measure a 30yr old piece of entertainment with current in-fad thinking is always self-defeating imo. You have every right to dislike this movie. But I don't agree with your reasoning or perspective. That's all. I hope that makes sense. : )

clh35

With the way I ended my comment, I can see why you drew that conclusion, but I'm not viewing the film unfairly, using modern sensibilities, as you say. I liked it back then because I wasn't even an adult and I was just there for the laughs. "Gay is a choice" was just as damaging and insulting back then as it is now. That hasn't changed. It was just more widely accepted. I suppose it was "bold" to even address the topic of homosexuality at all, but the prevailing message was and still is terrible. My initial reaction to you equating it to a fad was a giant eyeroll, but, on second thought, the modern political climate has, in fact, made bigotry "in-fad" again.

Bryan Sullivan

My favorite Smith movie....and Joey Lauren Adams is from my home state, so there's that. 😁

Jay Johnson

Simone mentions Jewel (at least on the full cinebingers site version) now I'm curious whether she is a fan of Jewel's music.

This is definitely one of my favorite Kevin Smith movies as well, and it holds up even decades later in a lot of ways. Did you guys get that the scars-comparison scene in the bar between Alyssa and Banky is a "Jaws" homage? I cracked up when I realized it. A few things about the movie -- Kevin Smith wrote it from life about a situation he couldn't handle with a girl's past (so George, you were right about that), and he fictionalized it and added the core conflict that Alyssa was gay. He then had actress and screenwriter Guinevere Turner (who wrote "American Psycho" and "Go Fish" and has a cameo introducing Alyssa in the bar) do a sensitivity read of his screenplay to make sure it was okay with her as a gay woman. She didn't love the scenario but she felt like he had done a respectful job with the complexity of Alyssa's story, so he went forward with the movie. What's interesting to me all these years later, rewatching it again, is what bothers me now that didn't bother me back then. I do think it's icky that Holden befriends Alyssa because he's into her. He is attracted to her from minute one, and he's doing the classic thing where a guy pretends friendship with a girl while he waits for his chance to pounce. And that's gross. And dishonest. But I do appreciate that he owns it to some extent in his confession in the car, although again -- him saying those things to her on a long drive where he's driving is again maybe not the most sensitive choice. I absolutely love the entire final confrontation and proposal from Holden to Alyssa and Banky because he gets it so right in some ways (he calls out Banky for his very visible feelings) and yet he gets it so wrong with Alyssa, and it is staggeringly disrespectful. They will never have "equal" experiences. Guys who get hung up on "body counts" like this will never get over it and this movie really illustrates how stupid a concept it is, especially when it so often is "guys can do anything, but God forbid a girl have a past." The one thing I really disliked upon rewatch here -- and it surprised me -- is the comic Holden writes about Alyssa. Hear me out -- but it's evidently pretty verbatim about their relationship, she's almost naked on the cover, and on the final page we see him apologize to Alyssa. But isn't that just making a public spectacle of her one more time? Shouldn't he have asked her permission before writing and illustrating a comic about their sexual history and her sexual past? It just kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth that Holden does this in the end because once again, it seems to be all about HIS feelings, and not at all about respecting Alyssa. But I suspect I may be sitting at a small table on this one. Thanks for the reaction as always!

This movie broke my heart seven different ways. Love doesn't come around a lot don't f-ck it up.
