Hellboy - Patreon Version

Tay Schumaker

If you do get around to it, Hellboy 2 has one of my all time favorite movie villains

droodly

I thought it was only 40% of your viewers... :P

JediLounger

I love these movies, but they are terrible adaptations of the comics. As a basic example, Abe is weak and defenseless in this movie, while he is a deadly fish-man ninja in the comic. The basic personality of Hellboy is also very different. If you guys end up watching these, I strongly advise you check out the comics. They are wild, and epic in so many ways that go way beyond the scope of the movies.

Odd Thomas

The edit jumps around a lot - is this the Director's Cut? Keeps going out of sync. [edit: Ah ok the blu-ray is the directors cut even though it doesn't say so. Luckily the theatrical is on Prime Video]

MikeBdrx

If you want the REAL hell boy you gotta watch Little Nicky. (Adam Sandler) lol

Odd Thomas

Another good Del Toro flick is 'Mimic' (director's cut)

Spacedone

+1 for this suggestion. It's largely forgotten about these days but it's a good film.

Odd Thomas

A good Jeffrey Tambor movie: Meet Joe Black

JediLounger

Just finished the movie. If you guys like the aesthetics and visuals of this movie, wait till you watch Golden Army.

Amos T Fairchild

Doug Jones is great in Star Trek. That should have been your first mention. lol.

Jim Saul

The sequel has everything great about this one, x10. It's a glorious ride through del Toro's imagination.

REDR58

The only real problem with these movies is that the 3rd one was never made and likely never will be. Instead we got some half-assed reboots and the most recent one looks so cheap.

Logan Kerlee

Which Hellboy is this? Which version, I mean? The 2004 or 2019?

pinkdino99

Guillermo del Toro is a genius, and he LOVES monster movies. The sequel is well watchable. The first follow up flopped at the box office (no Ron Pearlman), but there is Hellboy: The Crooked Man coming out soon which looks to be very faithful to the books. The books are great. Author and artist Mike Mignola has a truly unique style (he collaborated with del Toro on the movie).

samuel Jakob

Damn, its been around two decades since I have last seen this, I forgot how well done the prostetics etc. was, I thought it was alot of bad early 2000 effects but I guess I just remembered the blue fire. Well anyway this was great to revisit with you guys, and now I know why I always remembered loving this movie, and now do again, its just so well done, and I love the humor in it a lot, now everyone have a great weekend!

Amelie W

Doug Jones definitely holds like 18 spots on the top list of 20 longest makeup procedures in movie history, but I don't think this is one of them. Pretty funny, the Abe Sapiens costume was just an average job for him.

Stugotz

I hope you guys watch the sequel, I actually think it’s even better than this one.

Vaughn Bell

Really appreciate having the runtime in the description. Thanks George/Simone.

D. T. Nelson

Just my luck... you always seem to watch the version of the movie I DON'T have access to without additional fees.

Monica Alarcon

HA!! This time I had BOTH versions ready to go... I really don't understand why it's so hard to find theatrical versions on the internet. And then sometimes it's a different region or something and even if it's the same version it's a bit faster or slower than the one you're watching...

Tucci

VPN users: This cut of Hellboy is available on Netflix in Japan, Sweden and Turkey.

Brendan Rafferty

Hellboy = good Hellboy 2 = great Del Toro was restrained by studio input for the first one, but had much more freedom for the second one and was not only more faithful to the comic, without studio created characters like John Myers, but it allowed Del Toro’s creativity to flow

Monica Alarcon

Wow, David Hyde Pierce really is the voice of Abe Sapien I didn't know that. I knew Doug Jones plays him but his voice sounds very similar when he plays Saru in Star Trek Discovery so I thought it was also his voice.

djKENTO

David Hyde Pierce was forced onto GDT for the first movie. Doug plays him for the sequel and the animated films.

djKENTO

Thanks fully Universal produced the second one and let him go a bit more nuts.

djKENTO

they're watching TOS for the first time still... I don't think they'd be familiar with Discovery.

Monica Alarcon

For more Hellboy lore just read the comics, they are really good and it's not like a huuuuge series that would take long to read, it's a series of miniseries and some specials...

CT

The director of Pan's Labyrinth would have made some great Hellboy adaptations. Unfortunately, we got the director of Pacific Rim.

King_Panarisi

Cinebinge! You always manage to find version's of the movies I can't find anywhere!

Opti_Frog

Guillermo del Toro never got to make his dream project a reality, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At The Mountains of Madness. But there is quite a lot of it in his Hellboy movies.

King_Panarisi

Thank you, Last 2 months especially they have been reacting to versions of movies i can't find anywhere without VPN's.

Tay Schumaker

Are they still pirating movies? Is that why the versions are often weird?

Itbewhatitbe

im so confused why everyones having so much problems with the versions. literally just google hellboy 2004 stream and every result that shows up is the same runtime, 121/122 minutes.

Itbewhatitbe

literally just google hellboy 2004 stream and every result that shows up is the same runtime, 121/122 minutes.

Itbewhatitbe

im guessing they have to download them for the edit, easier than screen capture. plus Simone lives out in the boonies with crap internet right? so i would imagine them on call with eachother + streaming a movie might be too laggy for them.

David Lonewolf Wright

I think the main reason why a lot of people first thought of Ron Perlman for Hellboy is he played a heavy prosthetic role in an 80's tv show called Beauty and the Beast... it also costarred Linda Hamilton.

Monica Alarcon

The record for the longest time spent applying makeup for a movie is 20 hours, set by Rod Steiger for his role as Carl in the 1969 film The Illustrated Man. The makeup artist and a team of eight assistants painted tattoos on Steiger's entire body.

michael murray

And yet my paid for version on Amazon (bought years ago in the UK) has a runtime of 117 mins. I curently live in Poland and it's on Max here, also with a 117 min runtime. Ahh the joys of regional framerate differences :) To try get around this i also searched various 'shadier' sites, and can confirm all the results i came across were the directors cut. Ended up using a chrome extension to adjust the cinebinge video speed to 4% faster

Gwyn

Please do the second one

FranciscoGios

The only thing I can tell you guys from this better of Del Toro film is the creature Sammael’s stunt people who couldn’t see thru the huge masks, they couldn’t make eye sockets to make the creature scarier, so they would yell at the stunt man who would swing, jump & duck. ‘The Shape of Water’ a Del Toro film not connected to this movie, but has a similar character in it. ✌️

Vwlss Nvwls

I always laugh that they hide their secret bureau in New Jersey. As if to say "who would look here?" :D I always loved this movie, and the sequel. I have not watched the newest remake/reboot(?), because I am afraid it will be disappointing. Maybe one day I will check it out.

Vwlss Nvwls

Simone brought up a good question about what the longest time in a make up chair. My guess would be Tim Curry in Legend, because I seem to recall reading it took 8 hours to do. But I am old, so I could be wrong. :D

Skyruff

Prior to this series, Ron Perlman was known for a TV series where he wore heavy make-up and still gave an Emmy nominated performance for "Beauty and the Beast" (1987). That was were the producer, writer and director knew him from.

Chris Henderson

Folks having trouble with the version they're watching just go rent or buy from YouYouTube it's the exact one maybe a minute short but still the same.

Jim Saul

Some of his actual notebook's are available on Amazon... and citing his style results in wonderfully evocative AI art generations. I once complimented an artist that her studio looked like something out of del Toro's imagination and she teared up. :)

Pete Luhtaniemi

What platform are you guys watching this from?

Martin Nicholls

I thought that was Doug Jones, lil' bit gaslit by Simone there - there's a lot of Star Trek between where you are and that particular conversation. A lot of people *really* like this movie, it's aged kinda okay, I still don't quite get why it draws out the obsessives though, it's just a reasonably fun movie. In a lot of ways with hindsight all these years later it feels like proto-MCU.

Grumblefunk

My bluray copy is the 132 min director's cut so can't watch along but I second everyone who said also watch Hellboy 2, it's a visual feast

Chase Lonnergan

Marvelous Aesthetics and Creature Design are the hallmarks of a Guillermo Del Toro film. After all, this is the man who brought you Pan's Labyrinth...

Daniel Popp

When I went to San Diego Comic Con in 2013, I met a cosplayer at a nearby Subway shop dressed as the henchman Karl Ruprecht Kronen from the opening scene. He had a fantastically detailed cosplay. But he did tell me it was the only time he'd wear that version of the character. His reasoning being he had historically accurate Nazi paraphernalia as part of the cosplay, and knew such things could be considered offensive to those who don't understand.

Jared Winn

Internet Archive is where I found the version I’m watching.

SpankTheMonk

I think a couple of possibilities, since they are Canadian they may have access to slightly different versions as studios can have small changes for each region. Second if their source is from a Plex server they are relying on the information provided from the source, unless I have that wrong 🤷

SpankTheMonk

I know this is not a majority opinion but I like the 2019 remake so much more. I think this version is a better film, and the 2019 has many issues. But I found parts of this version tedious and a bit soft. I think the f-ed up nature of some of the 2019 film’s scenes was metal and disturbing in an interesting way. Also I enjoyed David Harbor a bit more than Ron but they each bring their own interesting interpretation. Also I really like Daniel Dae Kim so it’s fun to see him go wild with a role 😉. I wish D.D. Kim gets to play the negative man villain in a future Spiderman (Peter or Miles) movie, as he had that small role in Spiderman 2.

Jesse Coombs

The original comics and the BRPD series are fantastic. I highly recommend checking them out.

Jesse Coombs

Yeah, Hellboy 2 is really good. Also, just read the comics. I'm sure you can get them from the library. They are awesome.

SpankTheMonk

Wow I forgot that Hellboy almost lobotomized the young recruit.

Rooster Aleution

I would like you to sometime personally watch the director's version for more of the love story and explanation/lore. Do not stop to poll, just watch the sequel. Just the costumes alone are amazing. Watch at least the first season of The Larry Sanders Show. Jefferey Tambor is a total ass, but f'in brilliant as a talk show sidekick. Doug Jones is amazing as a character/creature actor. He is Abe's actual voice in Hellboy 2 and is Sauron's creepy, teethy ambassador in Return of the King. Ron Perlman is loads of fun in Alien 4: Resurrection.

REDR58

AMC+ via Amazon Prime in the US has the 2:01 Theatrical version that Simone and George are watching but it’s got very strange edits between scenes that briefly fade to black and it messes up the timing, but the content seems to be the same. The 4K disc in the US seems to also come with both the Theatrical and Director’s Cut versions. I highly recommend “The Shape of Water” (2017) also directed by Del Toro, with Sally Hawkins and Doug Jones. The main character is very reminiscent of Abe Sapien.

Jacob King

Absolutely read the comics and watch the next movie. They did make some changes from the comic most notably the BPRD and Hellboy are known by the public in the comics. So Manning’s character is not only annoying but superfluous. David Hyde Pierce isn’t in the sequel (Doug Jones does the voice) but he does voice The Amazing Screw-On Head, another Mignola hero, in an animated short.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Funny enough, Rasputin wasn’t even the first mystic to win favor with the Romanov family. Previously they sought the help of a French healer named Nizier Anthelme Philippe, hoping he’d help them conceive a male heir. But enough about the thaumaturgical interests among Tsarist aristocracy, this movie’s DVD extras might have kickstarted my cinephilia as an adolescent, so I was especially happy when this ended up winning the poll. Love that every time you go into one of Del Toro’s movies, you’re gonna walk away with some incredible creature designs and an assortment of Gothic imagery that’ll fuel your imagination for quite some time, a man after my own heart. And what better playground for his ideas to take form than the story of Hellboy, with all manner of demons, folklore and pulp weirdness, it’s all pretty fucking metal. I’ll be eagerly waiting when y’all return for the sequel, or really any of Del Toro’s other works, but especially if it’s one of his other Spanish language films (“Cronos”, “The Devil’s Backbone”) or his recent interpretation of “Pinocchio”.

Philipp Roensch

Oh sadge, you watched the theatrical cut, wondered why I get weird timings :D. The Director's Cut may be a bit slower, but expands a lot of scenes, especially for John Hurts' father role. It is a good movie still, all the aesthetic and costume design is so well done. I like the second one even more, less logic errors. (For example: Liz never burns clothes, and they totally forgot about all the eggs in NY) I love when Guillermo does Fantasy and characters so faithfully.

Mega Reacts

One of the few movies where the sequel is better than the original.

Ste Rawlings

Simone - "I hate stabby stuff" Simone 45 minutes later - "I would have stabbed him again, maybe in the face!"
