About to watch. Hope you guys notice that the scene in the bar where they are comparing oral sex scars is a direct homage to JAWS and the scene of Richard Dreyfus and RobertShaw comparing scars. In the bar scene they put blue square lights on the wall to mimic the portholes in the scene from JAWS

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Haven’t watched this one in a spell but still rank it as Kevin Smith’s best screenplay. Great performances, especially by Adams. At this point y’all are also caught up for Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back which is a riot and a half.

Mastervodo

What? This awesome Rom-Com-Drama is Simone's favorite View Askew movie? How can that happen? Simone hates Rom-Coms with a white-hot passion!

punterjoe

I too am looking forward to Simone & George experiencing the meta mind-job that is Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. 😁

Tay Schumaker

So apparently a lot of the insecurity stuff was based on Kevin Smith’s actual relationship with Joey Lauren Adams (Alyssa).

Charlie Keeler

Just a quick note, the dude to Ben's right ..the one that commented about the seats, id the same dude that played Rick Derris in Clerks

Logan Kerlee

What happened to the time stamp? lol, I most my place in the movie and have no way of finding it again. xD

Guillermo Antonio Ricci Alvarez

You guys really need to watch the trilogy of An Evening with Kevin Smith, they are quite long but Kevin Smith talking about it is so good and gives you lots of insights on his life and work

Kevin B

Skip Jersey Girl

DeAndrew Greene

I feel like everyone's feeling in this movie are realistic and valid until Banksy comes to that awful conclusion. We almost had it all lol. Also, this script is so amazing.

REDR58

Just go back a bit when a scene changes or there is some other obvious visual distinction, pause the movie there. Go back with the the reaction video then let it play and as that video approaches the same moment in the movie, unpause the movie. That’s what I do. The timers don’t always exactly seem to be in sync anyhow.

Every lesbian friend of mine hates this movie because (without malicious intent) it perpetuates the male fantasy that the right guy can turn them. That’s my only issue with this film and I know Kevin Smith wasn’t intending to put that message out there… he was clearly making a statement about the nature of love and jealousy… and that statement is why I love this film because it touches on that subject that few films do… the unintended irrational jealousy and insecurity that can come along with true love and how it can ruin things. Love this movie, despite its flaws. Oh… and Meow Mix was a real lesbian bar on Houston street in the 90’s. He filmed at least most of that scene on location

Florian Geyer

I thought the same thing. I can't relate to the feeling exactly, but I could imagine how it feels. But what I liked was the portrayal of a person who is experimenting or is bi or whatever. I mean now days we come up with a lot of words to discribe the feeling of how or who you love, and I think the idea thats planted here (especially in that time) is great. My mother was married for 19 years with my father, loving him and raising me and my brother but supressing her feeling of loving women. After so much time she finally came out and is no happylie than ever. Talking about love and beeing free to love who you love, is one of biggest achievements of our time. Knowing its not everywhere, and knowing there is much way to go. Yeah I didnT knew this movie and I thought it was just a comedy, I'm stunned and happy to watched this. And the fact that the Meow Mix is real is a nice bit :D

There is also more recent, less popular sequels that come later in the View Askewniverse timeline. After Clerks 2 you have "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot" and "Clerks 3". Outside of the View Askewniverse "Red State" is one of my favorite Kevin Smith films.

Rev

I love Red State. I hope they give it a chance some day.

Monica Alarcon

I hope you do the rest of Kevin Smith Movies (okay not all, stay far far away from Copout and Yoga Hosers). Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is fun with tons of cameos and references to the other movies and Clerks III is a worthy closure to the vieaskewniverse (for now). of his other movies I love Jersey Girl, I think at least Simone will love it. And Red State is Very different from his other movies but quite good.

djKENTO

I haven’t watched this movie in a while, its finale is soooo much more impactful after another movie later in the franchise. Can’t wait for you both to get there. The other thing I’d mention is that maybe a reaction to Batman V Superman Ultimate Edition might help some other jokes land in the future.

Vwlss Nvwls

Great movie. I always loved their nod to Jaws with the scene when they compare injuries. You will not find another Kevin Smith movie this serious.

Vwlss Nvwls

I think it was in the director commentary on the DVD I own, but I recall Ben Affleck saying that he gave Kevin Smith some crap saying something like "Dude, I kissed your girlfriend." :D

Shane Driscoll

SILENT BOB: Don't obsess over your partner's past relationships. Just remember that she chose you. HOLDEN: So... You're saying I should propose a threesome. Got it.

DM DC

Great reaction. I don't usually go for dramas, but it has familiar actors and characters. Some really great comedy moments but also really emotional moments. I can't wait for you two to get to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. My recommendation don't look up the cast cause it will be a long list lol. Just watch, course you may offer your speculation of what the movie will be about, but I guarantee it will not be what you think. After Jay and Silent Bob then go to Clerks 2.

Grandalf

Here's how George will easily remember Joey Lauren Adams from Mallrats: She's the one that was trying on the underwear in the store. ;)

Jonas Buckner

"What year is it?" George asks. 1997 is the answer. That's what things were like. This was a very progressive movie for its time. It was released in theaters April 4, 1997. Ellen's coming out episode was April 30, 1997. You have to remember that this was still a time when it was a fairly mainstream opinion that hurricanes were caused by homosexuality. Banky stands in for a large portion of the audience; Banky's attitudes were the prevailing opinion in America at the time. He's a homophobe and a misogynist and also very understanding compared to an average 1997 moviegoer. I didn't see this until the year 2000, and even then it seemed like an incredibly progressive and nuanced film compared to other straight or queer films I'd seen.

John

This was a fun watch, It is different from the other Kevin Smith movies and very good. I will mention a movie with a small Jason Lee role, Enemy of the State. After you finish the Kevin Smith catalog, I would recommend returning to the Rocky Universe if only to get to Creed, particularly as there is another Michael B Jordan/Ryan Coogler collaboration coming out soon (Sinners). I assume you have seen Black Panther, it was their 3rd movie together after Creed and Fruitville Station

Martin

Just a reminder: The next movie in the View Askew universe you should watch is Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. This is the movie from 2001, not the horrible reboot from 2019. That movie isn’t worth a watch.

Jonas Buckner

Enemy of the State is great. Another Jason Lee movie that gets even less love is the very overlooked Mumford.

Young Blood Priest

So glad you guys are watching and enjoying Kevin Smith movies and can’t wait for Jay & Silent Bob. Also, it’s not a JSB movie, or a comedy , but Red State is a Kevin Smith movie that is a must watch.

lovemoose

Can you do a animated movie reaction for Scooby Doo on Zombie Island?

Ricardo Alanis

Jersey Girl is not in the View Askewniverse. It is my wife’s favorite Kevin Smith movie.

DM DC

I forgot to mention in my earlier comment: In Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back there is a post credit scene.

Drew

Went back to watch the special notes in the credits, and saw that lowest listed “Additional Grip” in the production credits was Jay Chandrasekhar, the director and actor in “Super Troopers”.

REDR58

First time watch for me. This was a really good movie but Holden is so frustratingly stupid it’s hard to care about what happens to him. And then he doubles down. What a fuckwit.

Brandon

People wrongly call this movie dated all the time. This movie's pushing 30 years old and there's a lot of terminology that simply didn't exist at the time. The screenplay does a damn good job letting us know who Alyssa is, her choices etc.

Monica Alarcon

I just remembered that Jay and Silent Bob Reboot has a scene that's like an epilogue to this movie...

Justin Leone

Fun bit of trivia I'm surprised wasn't on that list: The scene where Banky and Alyssa bond over cunnilingus "war stories" is a surprisingly faithful recreation of a famous scene from Jaws, a film that Kevin Smith frequently adds nods and references to. Jaws' three main characters were Hooper, Brody, and Quint, all names he's used for characters in Mallrats and Chasing Amy. And in Clerks, Randall quotes the movie directly while playing with "Salsa Shark".

MattN

idk if it's been brought up in the comments before but matt damon & ben affleck were friends with kevin smith before they were famous. In fact(and ppl could fact check me but im too lazy rn), im pretty sure this in ben affleck's first leading role. When Ben and Matt wrote good will hunting they wanted kevin to direct it but instead just helped with the rewrite and getting it produced which is why he got the exec producer credit.

John

I rewatched Dogma after seeing this, I really have enjoyed his expanded universe. In honor of that I would suggest for October a poll with Prophecy and for your next TV watch consider The Good Place on the poll

G P

Kevin Smith's best movie! Way ahead of its time. Glad you all enjoyed it.

Farbod

I watched this in college and loved it. Glad it holds up so well and that you guys enjoyed it.

Kevin Rogers

Lighters back then had child proof features that made it tough to use them for some people. Holden bit that part off so it would work like a normal lighter.

Trevor S Bright

Jersey Girl isn't part of the View Askewniverse. Not every Kevin Smith movie is, just the majority of them.

Poddington

I like to think that what people don't like about Holden is that he's a reflection of a truth that many of us know is bad, but also know that when it comes to love we'll be exactly the same. It's incredibly easy to create an idealised image of a person and then rationalise every detail until that person fits that image. It's immature and terrible for the other person, but also very human.

StonyD

It's not dated. It's modern viewers trying to overlay their modern culture on something from the past. An empty and pointless gesture. This movie stands as what it is, for when it was, and it's just as good.

Amelie W

Ah, that weird age when you think that because you know everything you're supposed to say and do, you're also going to be able to do it. There's a great comic called A Heart Made of Glass that tackles this universal problem of learning more than one can handle about one's lover's past; it reaches some understanding, I think, where this movie only gets as far as romance. It makes you feel, but the comic makes you think, if you will. Sure, it's easy to see intellectually you're just supposed to grow up and accept these things if you're going to have mature intimate relationships, but that process of growth is delicate and painful when you're inside it, and if you're supposed to do it while the very person intimidating you holds the keys to your heart, well, you'll end up like Holden a lot of the time I guess.
