I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited to see your reaction to this one. What an incredible episode!

mojo shivers

Cristin Milioti just had a showcase of an episode on The Penguin. I mean—she’s been a powerhouse all season, but the latest episode showed off how game she is for the challenge and how well-suited to playing Sofia she is. She took us through a quick tour of the weak and vulnerable Sofia all the way to her transformation to the undisputed head of the Falcone crime family without one false note or wrong step into melodrama or haminess. She killed in every sense of the word. This performance needs to be recognized come awards season.

REDR58

Very cool Fleabag print, Simone! I need to watch that.

Now, after this episode, I thought back to the previous episodes, when Sophia sleeps in her closet, scratches her neck in her sleep, how she eats quickly and messily with her hands.

Noel Valdez

the thumbnail reminds me of the Comedy and Tragedy mask. Lol

💯 Cristin Milioti needs to win an award for her incredible performance

Shawn B

Oh haha Because one side is sad and the other is happy?

droodly

I haven't started it yet, but I'm gonna guess George just told a joke.

This was a very enjoyable episode, particularly Cristin Milioti’s performance. I guess you didn’t notice the scars on her left upper arm? You can see it best when she gives the toast and near the end when she is in the greenhouse. Sofia’s father portrayed here by Mark Strong was played by John Turturro in “The Batman.” Theo Rossi who plays Dr. Julian Rush, the doctor who spoke to Sofia in the cell and then later, was featured in the (formerly) Netflix Marvel series “Luke Cage” where he played Hernan Alvarez, an antagonist to Cage. He’s quite good in that series. Speaking of Arkham, not far from me is the site of Pennhurst State School and Hospital in Pennsylvania, originally called “Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic,” one of the more notorious mental health “treatment” centers in the US. It was open from 1908 to 1987. In 1968 a local reporter from Philadelphia hosted an expose of the facility. Today the site of the hospital is a tourist site with many of the old buildings still remaining. http://www.preservepennhurst.com/default.aspx?pg=26

I just noticed the poster of “Fleabag” behind Simone!

What a show but WHAT AN EPISODE! Full of amazing moments, though not for her. Bit of “um actually” housekeeping though: Mark Strong is a recast. John Turturro played Falcone in the movie. A little cameo from the movie though is the arresting detective in this episode was the dirty cop that had his nose busted by Batman and Catwoman dangled off the roof. Can’t wait for next week.

I was afraid they'd do this to Sofia Falcone. I was hoping for her to be like she is in the comics, but I guess it's an easier sell to make female characters sympathetic instead. I'm with George, I really wanted her to be a psycho serial killer, but oh well.

brian burke

what is that painting behind simone? its interesting. is it a movie poster?

REDR58

It’s from the “Fleabag” BBC show (2016-2019) with Phoebe Waller-Bridge. You can watch it on Amazon Prime or IFC in the US.

brian burke

thanks, i heard of that show, but that looks like a comic book

brian burke

weird poster for that show, thanks for the information

Farbod

It’s much better this way. She’s actually a developed character instead of just a psycho trope.

Farbod

Just an FYI, Mark Strong wasn’t Carmine Falcone in the Batman. It was John Tutturo, but he couldn’t reprise the role because of a scheduling conflict. I’m good with Strong as a great replacement.

Stugotz

I prefer the psycho trope to the “men made me this way” trope that’s so overused for women villains. It’s fine, the episode was good and I’m looking forward to what happens next.

imperial

Would love to see Sofia and CATWOMAN bonding like sisters over their shitty father who killed BOTH of their mothers. What a duo they would make!

Noel Valdez

Yes but also how dramatic of a difference it is. Lol

Jonny Campbell

Agreed. I also hated how naïve and "innocent" she came across at the start of the flashback when she was supposed to be the worthy heir to a villainous crime family. What does she think that job is? You have to be ruthlessly evil to earn it in the first place but the show puts her across as a good person until the turn at arkham. Lots of ways to make her interesting and i agree that "men made me this way" was the worst choice they could have made. Cristin's acting was amazing and i think she could have done so much more if they committed to a properly dark character instead of making her a victim of circumstance.

Just out of curiosity, are you planning on doing HOTD S02 as you did for HOTD S01?

Cinebinge

we do have interest in it and want to return to it at some point but as of right now its lower on priority compare to the other 3 on going shows

I had a theory that Alberto would have turned out to be the guy that was killing women from 44 Below and Carmine was protecting him. The theory was based on comic book stuff but it all went out the window when we find out how Sofia's mother died. I'm glad I was wrong because the story wouldn't have benefited from finding out Alberto was the real reason she went to Arkham after he's already dead.

I just tried to click "The Penguin"-tag, intending to navigate through to episode one - and basically every single post on your channel popped up, rather than, well, Penguin posts. Is that just patreon somehow being even shittier than the heaping garbage dump of a great idea it usually tends to be? I swear, this site actively discourages users from interacting with their subscriptions, like some dark-pattern bullshit intended to Never mind the atrocious cataloging system they basically put on the channel creators figuring out, requiring meticulously sifting and sorting through their orphaned entries to still end up with a bastard child of two barely cooked-through webdesign notions. Or the "endless" scroll ruining any device after clicking "load more" twice or so, totaling what feel like fifteen posts shown... or the insane excuse for a comment functionality just chucking all sensible UX design right out of the window-only building the hand-rubbing, petty technology officers of this company inhabit - this is nuts, as one would say. Just an evening rant, I'm ever so slightly pissed for a platform already making bucks of their creators not bothering (for a literal decade, too!) to make it more appealing and usable for them and their subscribers.

m

Just vaguely noticed... is it because of a three letter, space-segmented token in front? "the" once again throwing off a search engine - patreon on top? Because that'd be so hilariously useless, my god

I really like the worldbuilding how they're showing us how corrupt Gotham truly is. It will give Batman a lot of work to do in the upcoming movies. I don't mind Sofia not being The Hangman as we've already established in the The Batman movie Carmine was the one strangling women. There's so many different iterations of each DC character in every comics so I don't mind them changing hers. She's still ruthless and horrible when she wants to be (killed a teenager without even blinking). Only problem I have now is that I'm rooting for her more than Oz, so we'll have to see how they solve that going forward.

droodly

This has been happening with all the tags in the collections tab since Patreon updated the comments section appearance last week. The tags look like they are loading, but then just refresh to the recent posts page. It happens on other subs too, so they musta broke something. :(

Cinebinge

It does seem to be broken again. Best course of action is everyone report to Patreon support. When they get tickets in the hundreds they tend to listen and act faster. You know, if it's not weekends or after 5pm. 🫠

Ludovic Ligot

Cristin Milioti is so great ! I hope she will get the recognition she deserves... and many other roles. Let's imagine this perfect duo : Aubrey Plaza + Cristin Milioti as crazy sisters and / or crazy criminals... 😎

droodly

Looks like they fixed the tags now!

Guy-on-Couch

I read it was because the script showed violence against women and he didn't want to do that, he said he did what he wanted to with the role in the movie and was done with it.

Farbod

Who knows. This contradicts the reason that was given before. Could be the truth but could also be sour grapes. Don’t know what he’s talking about. Either way, Strong is a great replacement. Nothing lost.

Logan Nelson

Omg... I've been searching and searching for it... I think it's a unique piece...
