I too will defend Granny Smith to the very end !!!!

Kirk: "he looks familiar..." Me: "yeah, he looks like the farmer from Babe" (Yes Simone, that is the same Zefram Cochrane...)

Granny Smith are the BEST apples to make caramel apples from!

The Judas goat refers specifically to a goat that will lead a herd a herd to slaughter. The term is a reference to Judas Iscariot, an apostle of Jesus Christ who betrayed Jesus according to the New Testament. In this case, Cochrane is acting as the Judas goat by calling the Companion, so Spock can use the device he built to "deconstruct" the Companion. He's going to betray the entity that saved his life and kept him alive for 150 years.

Now you see why Spock's Pan Farr Ceremony had T.Pau the high-ranking Vulcan officiating- since Spock's father is an Ambassador. This also establishes the lore that Vulcans live to 180-190+ years old but suffer disease of old age when they do. In other episodes of sequels you will see humans living into their 130s

Actuarial Lurker

The actress in the first episode playing the Commissioner is Elinor Donahue who played the oldest kid on the 1950s show Father Knows Best and was on Andy Griffith Season 1

So they had to retcon Star Trek First Contact from 2117 to 2119 since the plot of that feature film conflicts with Metamorphisis regarding Zephrim Cochrane- in ST cannon the first warp flight is in 2063 after a nuclear war, when Cochrane was in his 30s, add 57 years to make him 87 and 150 more and you get the 2260s which is when TOS is set. In the movie Cochrane is played by James Cromwell

TOS breaks ground with interspecies alien love

I love the guy who plays the Andorian ambassador. He only has a few lines, but manages to get maximum creepiness out of his conversation with Spock.

Monica Alarcon

George: yes. We will see Spock throughout the Star Trek Universe, maybe not always a regular cast member but his presence will be there. That's the best I can do without spoilers...

Monica Alarcon

Species we will definitely see again are the Tellarites (the pig looking ones) although we'll have to wait 53 years to have a Tellarites main cast member. Also Andorians (blue with antennae) who will be very important in Star Trek Enterprise. Both are Federation founders along with humans and vulcans...

Actuarial Lurker

Mark Lenard who plays Spock's father was also the Romulan Captain in the "submarine warfare" episode in Season 1

Actuarial Lurker

George: MANY of the species are cannon. The blue people with the antennae are Andorians and the rude Pig people are Tellurites. The prequel series "Enterprise" about the foundation of the Federation in the 2150s and 2160s- set 100 years after Zephraim Cocrane and 100 years before TOS is the back story of how the Humans, Vulcans, Andorians and Tellurites basically formed a "Space Nato/UN" that became the Federation

For Simone and who else knows. Zephyr Cochrane blasting Magic carpet ride!

Simone, it is OK to take some time off if unwell. Please look after you health.

Rupert Purcat

Granny pie with cream is awesome.

August King

There is a lot of Vulcan lore in the Star Trek: Enterprise series. It makes the Vulcans much more 3 dimensional as a species.

Cartoons ReAct

Metamorphosis is both the first album name and a song in it, and yes...I also love Hillary Duff music and no...is not bad, is not the greatest of all time but is good music

George not only do they still use “Fahrenheit” in TOS, they also use miles and other imperial measurements. The interior color of the shuttle here seems to be something like “sea foam green.” It and similar colors were used for the interior crew spaces of various military vehicles and ships over the years. The color has a calming effect (which could be helpful in cramped spaces). The color was also formerly used in hospitals and other such places.

There have been a few episodes before “Journey to Babel” where video screens have been used showing crew members speaking.

Woo hoo! Star Trek Day 🎉🫶. Sorry you are sick Simone- hope you have gotten better ❤️

Star Trek Unification made every SF fan ugly cry. You should watch after completing TOS. The respect, nostalgia, and love for these characters (especially contrasted with what feels like the contempt for them and for the fans held by those who inherited the IP.). The emotions are very real as they parallel the loss that is life. If you live long enough, everything you care about inevitably dies or may even be inverted and vilified in ways you would never have predicted. Life is not easy.

Joe Concepts

I know many of us Trek fans tend to be nerdy and like to pick apart the details, but no one beats George's thoughts. I have never thought about the chemical composition of Spock's blood! :)

HansD

Do I need to google "metamorphosis?" ... I'm scared, George.

Were you guys gonna go into Next Generation at some point? I'd love to do my annual rewatch with new eyes on it.

In the biblical story of the Tower of Babel, a large group of people come together, and decide to build a tower so tall that they can touch God. Their ambition and pride grows so much that God decides to punish them. He changes the people so they all start speaking different languages. Quickly the people are confused and start to have different viewpoints and cannot agree on things. They separate, and the tower and surrounding city are eventually abandoned. From this comes the English word babble, which means incomprehensible speech. It's an interesting combination of episodes, going from one that deals with love and lonliness to another episode that deals with politics and dirty dealings. Good eye, George. Mark Leonard also played the Romulan commander in Balance of Terror, which was one of your favorites from season 1. He says that role was his favorite. Is there a mailbox somewhere? I need to ship a few quarts of my best chicken soup for Simone. Get better soon!!! For the geek in your heart, chicken soup has enzymes that aid in the production of antibodies that help to fight viruses like the common cold. It's a little science tied up in Mom's best recipe.

Granny Smith (apples) has a posse…beware 🍏 - careful taking a bite of the forbidden fruit! Fig tree for your fig leaf! 🍁 Ask your local community government. I agree with Simone on being used, the commissioner bonding with the alien. It wasn’t as graceful and feels a little bit like Akira when Kei is being used. A lot of this feels like in Metamorphosis that the writing is not fully refined. We have no idea how to feel about alien companionship and relationships especially with non-corporeal non-humanoid aliens. A human liking another human would be normative, a human not wanting to be intimate with something really alien would also be considered normative.

Kirk and Spock are the primary "avatars" of Star Trek. Spock stands out, especially for cosplay, as the alien of the two, but Kirk is "the Captain". You have seen Galaxy Quest, so you already get the fan feel for these two. The Characters and the actors that play them are exactly who Tim Allen and Alan Rickman were portraying (give or take a lie or two).

SpankTheMonk

But it also frustrates me. No spoilers, some of liberties taken with both story and acting/actions of Vulcans is irritating in Star Trek Enterprise.

SpankTheMonk

They can only show so much Kirk nipplage per episode, hence the high bandage. 😊

It appears Simone ate a Granny Smith Apple, I knew they were an evil fruit. The bad guys in Babel were Orions which we actually never saw other than disguised. We have seen a green Orion slave girl before. It is interesting that George investigated the concept of iron and copper more than the original writers of Star Trek did. The Andorians were heavily featured in Star Trek Enterprise, the first series shot in high def, and featured awesome animitronic antennae that allowed them to move and wriggle. George, you forget we bascially do have evil Vulcans... they are the Romulans.

Jethro Divine

Probably not the best post to comment this on but since you've watched a lot of superhero movies now and seem to chuckle at the Scary Movie movies, you may want to check out Superhero Movie. It's a tiny bit more grounded but has the same old Mel Brooks-y goofy style. Also, the story is based on the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man. Yay!

Badger

Simone still giving it her all when she is sick - gold star! Gearge and his funny McCoy quips - honorable mention!

nigel Macbug

57:34 George you have been downgraded, now you're only entitled to a granny smith tree

gfixler

They've said they plan to keep going through all the the treks!

Robert Elliott

I feel I must explain the jumping ass attack. As I recall its ancient origin is Tibetan, used mostly to disarm your opponent. However Kirk didn’t continue the roll which would’ve placed more distance from his opponent. But his technique of wall bounce was very impressive. LOL.

Theadora

And in my experience, "Babel" is pronounced "bay-bel", which makes it easier to differentiate between "Babel" and "babble" when speaking.

Theadora

I have; I think the human elements/factors in Spock's blood are less likely to be iron and more likely to be some of the different types of cells which have different functions than Vulcan cells.

Theadora

...for cooking? I'm not fond of their flavor in the first place, and cooking only ruins their texture on top of that...

Pearl Jam

Spock’s dad (Mark Lenard) is played by the same actor that played the Romulan captain in ‘Balance of Terror’ S01E14… The Romulan reveal would look a lot differently if you saw those episodes out of order; may think Spock’s dad is a double agent or something.

Raven Dark

George and Simone, in episode 9, Cochrane said, "What do they call it, a Judas goat?" You both mentioned you didn't know what that term meant. I didn't either, do I looked it up. A Judas goat is a type of goat that is specifically trained to lead livestock to certain places, including to slaughter. In the scene where he used the phrase, he, Kirk and Co were talking about using that electrical thingy to drain the Companion of its/her power. Cochrane said that what they do might kill it/her. When they all agree to use the machine on it/her, Kirk tells Cochrane to call the Companion so they can do it. He was comparing himself to a Judas goat because to him, he felt that, by calling it/her, he'd be leading the Companion to its/her death.

I consider McCoy's comment at the end of "Journey to Babel" to be the only time in TOS that a character breaks the fourth wall. Watch it closely - DeForest Kelley looks directly into the camera. Is he only talking to himself, or is he talking to us?

Shadows of Archonia

Fell behind in these watches, but I wanted to say - the three alien races featured in Journey to Babel - Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites, not only all appear again, but are eventually established to be the founding members of the Federation, along with Humans. The four together remain the most influential planets in it. I think it is kind of like the UN council, where many planets are Federation members, but the four founding planets have way more influence/voting power than others.
