Alan Walker

Time for arguably the greatest jump scare in TV history...followed immediately by your guts getting wrenched out by Theo's engrossing monologue. This show is written almost perfectly, in my opinion.

Śéáń

While this week has The Moment We've All Been Waiting For, this episode pair also has some of the strongest monologues in the show. Mr Dudley, Luke, and Theo have their standout moments here. Speaking of Theo, Kate Siegel is a powerhouse during her breakdown scene. Serious talent on display. And I love Hugh and Steve's whole conversation in the car.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

EP8: possibly the best jump-scare in television! Not only because it’s effective, but because it precipitates directly to causing Theo’s amazingly acted breakdown that permanently impacts the growth of the sisters’ relationship for the rest of the show. Flanagan and company nailed it. Had to pause it and rewind on my first watch cause heart rate went nuts haha

mojo shivers

The car jump scare of episode 8 “Witness Marks” is the scariest instance of it in any show or movie I’ve ever seen. It’s the furthest I’ve leaped from a jump scare ever. The whole back half of the series is some of craziest yet emotional storytelling I’ve ever seen.

imperial

Can't wait to see THAT jump scare reaction.

anna

to me, shirley is the realest character. just so angry and controlling over everything due to years of craziness/trauma. i understand why some people might find her frustrating but elizabeth reaser is so great at portraying her as this flawed and damaged person. also that jumpscare in ep8 made me pause the show when i first watched this lol it was so well done

Śéáń

I'm the same with Shirley, I've a lot more sympathy for her than a lot of the fanbase seems to..! I understand where her neuroses come from, I feel that's very well explained throughout the show.

Noel Valdez

I find Shirley to be unpleasant but to be fair I’d be fucking livid if my friend or nevertheless family was kissing or being intimate like that with my partner. She’s prickly but I understand why she is the way she is. Also, we all got to admit we could be her depending on the situation. (At least I can and have. Haha) My family has had a lot of turmoil and not to throw shit at least Shirley has real reasons to be the way she is. My family has members that don’t talk to each other and won’t show up to things for far less and super petty stuff. lol (also Steve making that book was fucked. It’s not just that he has money. That’s the one part of her character that may come off unpleasant but I am with her 100%. Exploiting probably the worst fucking day of your families life and your mother’s suicide into entertainment for cash and fame is gross.)

kbobravo

Mr. Dudley's monologue is quite possibly the best of the whole series.

Noel Valdez

Its funny most people when they watch this show hates Steve. Lol I feel like I would be him, refusing to believe that what Im seeing is true cause the idea of being mentally ill still sounds better than seeing real ghost. I feel like it could be a personality test. See which one annoys you the most. haha

Noel Valdez

I felt like watching reactions most people hated Steve. Lol maybe its just the videos I saw. But from the jump alot of people hate Steve in the vids I saw at least.

Josip Buretić

My favorite thing to do on Tuesday is watching your reaction to "Hill House"

Stugotz

Pretty sure bowler hat guy also had a cane

Kameron Webb

I freaking love Tuesdays! I'm so ready to get to episode 8!

Stugotz

Aside from Theo's superpowers they're all very realistic characters. I never disliked or was annoyed by Shirley, she's a bit stubborn but who isn't. Also she was completely justified in her anger IMO.

Josip Buretić

The haunting of Hill House is "perfecty splendid" 😛

Philipp Roensch

I can agree with Shirley being a strain, but I would say the whole family has difficulty dealing with the paranormal and real issues. Their father was so strong in his protection and denial that no other ways to cope have opened up to them, certainly not communicating. It is tragic and so heartbreaking to see.

China Andronicus

Shirley to me is horrid because of the reveal in the final episode. She’s grating from the start, if realistic, but after that reveal, this episode becomes unforgivable to me.

jefn

Not sure why Shirley seems grating to these two. If anything, she has remarkable personal integrity which I find incredibly admirable, and she should absolutely expect better from her siblings for taking blood money that was profited from their childhood trauma.

Inkpendude

that and the blind guy monologue

Tsuyama

they literally explain it in the video? because she presents her self as a holier than thou character when she is just as guilty (and thats before the finale reveal). secondly, during times of crisis everyone in the family tries to help or talk to each other and she just yells at people for what theyre doing wrong then shuts them out. everyone has flaws but when things get hard for someone else, they come in and help for better or worse. Shirley just judges people. No one likes people that looks down on others.

Mike FromOz

If you would like to see a movie from a different perspective, please watch "A Ghost Story". It's really well portrayed and an excellent meditation on what life after death might be like.

China Andronicus

Yeah she had already bugged me and then the finale reveal really drove it home.

China Andronicus

Watching spooky cinema with you just doesn’t grow old. Simone’s terror paired with the sheer glee on George’s face is so entertaining. 😂 Theo’s monologue will never cease to make me bawl my eyes out, no matter how many times I watch this. Amazing actress.

ShōNuff3K

SIMONE SURVIVED! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🖖🏾

ShōNuff3K

Okay I may be the first. Ep. 7 Mr Dudley's monologue 👍🏾 that actor was in Rose the Hat's crew. He was the one that leaned out of the van to pick up the little baseball boy.

Da Big Appa

I empathized with Simone so much with the jump scare. Not that she got scared but that she hurt herself because of it. Getting old sucks lol

Late Kate

In my experience people are a lot less tolerant of people who cope through trauma with anger/extremely controlling behavior (Both very real effects of trauma) than they are of other coping mechanisms. Luke does horrible things, but I think because people see him sad and in pain (unlike Shirley who almost never shows her pain outwardly except anger) they forgive him much easier. Also likeability helps overlook negative things. Like with Theo.

Thomas Yanez

Wow, I've never seen somebody NOT see Shirley for the Karen that she is.

Thomas Yanez

Yeah, I am not sure what it WOULD take to make me believe something was REALLY supernatural. I'd definitely be Steve for most of this show.

Thomas Yanez

Nice. I hope they go there, too.

sarCC

I watched ODDITY a few nights ago. OK movie, but it had some of the best (non-cheap) jump scares in it. One of them hurt my neck!

Robinson vs. Parkinson's

After watching it this morning, I'm probably going to binge Midnight Mass again tonight for some more great Flanagan monologues. Especially the conversation between Joe (Mr. Dudley) and the girl (I can't remember her name).

jefn

I see. Forgive my ignorance, this is my first time watching the show with these guys so I am not as well informed. These were just my initial thoughts. I don't know if my wording seemed a bit standoffish. I'll see if the finale changes my mind.

Stephanie Bedworth

She's easily my least favorite of the siblings as well. In fact, whenever I watch reactions to this show, I usually skip the second episode that centers on her.

Mitchell Bowker

For someone who found out her husband and sister both took the money behind her back & lied about it for years, then found them entangled in a storage room afterwards, all the while trying to organize the funeral for her other sister... Shirley is handling it better than most.

BJ Stephens

Jesus George needs to get off Shirley's back, she's not that bad. She has a lot of good traits. Just because she has flaws that aren't ignored like Theo's and Lukes because the show goes out of it's way to make them sympathetic. It's amazing how people just ignore things because they've decided not to like a character. Also WTF was that poem comment? Some people have trouble expressing emotions, and need avenues like that to help.

ASMRish

My thoughts exactly. The constant ragging on Shirl and Steve and the glorification of the others as 'innocents' has gotten grating.

Tsuyama

or you know, the point of a reaction is to hear their thoughts and not what you want them to say and not say. because theyre not movie characters with a script you can change, its just their thoughts.

ASMRish

And then the people who watch the reaction can express their *own* thoughts about said reaction.

Tsuyama

yeaaah no. theres the difference between "i disagree and i think this way" vs "they need to stop doing X because i dont agree" because now, youre asking them to change the way they react and change their opinion rather than saying what they feel. which is what the rest of us are paying for, their HONEST opinion, not what they think patrons want to hear.

Tsuyama

and if you need an example of how to disagree without telling them what to say and not say or think/not think, read the rest of the comments of people who likes Shirley. every one of them (except for the two of you), are perfectly capable of expressing their disagreement without telling S&G to stop having an opinion.

Tsuyama

and BJ, you know what else is amazing? its amazing how people (ie you and ASMRish) can just ignore and dismiss their reasoning and point of view and even CLEARLY just joking about the poem as soon as you decided that you disagree with their opinions.

Itbewhatitbe

reading the comments its pretty clear that not liking Shirley is the majority opinion, so what is really weird is how you cant seem to accept other people having different opinions.

Itbewhatitbe

yeah but realest character and enjoyable character are 2 different things. in reality people might be more like shirley, but in reality things happen in real time and arent edited to fit 50 minutes. shirley in this show, becomes grating because every time she shows up shes talking shit and being angry, it becomes unpleasant whenever she shows up even if shes right or realistic. theo's introduction episode is her putting away a pedo, so everything after is built on that. making her likeable.

zak

You are right George, the family do represent different stages of grief, good catch i think most people miss that.

Tsuyama

no actually, I'm not. I buried a cousin 2 weeks ago and Cinebinge is my escapism from reality. their honest opinions and reactions is a huge bright part of my day so I really really dont want them to get pressured into saying what patrons want to hear, rather than their own actual opinions. so yeah, it pisses me off when people like BJ and you tell them theyre "reacting wrong".

Itbewhatitbe

agreed, i fucking hate that too. people telling them to stop having their own opinions is what ruined the expanse for them and made them stop doing that show. its fine if you disagree, its fine if you like whatever characters that others dont, thats fantastic. but we're not here for your opinions, we're here for S&G's. i want them to give their real ones. dont tell them to stop giving their real opinions.

Tsuyama

seems like they made a mistake on tier settings, good on ya for letting them know

ASMRish

I'm sorry that you're going through that but taking it out on people you don't know on the internet is not a solution. It seems that you have that in common with Shirley.

Tsuyama

so you do agree her traits are unlikeable and its okay to have the opinions of not liking her then.

ASMRish

Obviously. They all have flaws, they're complex characters. My disagreement, which I made clear, was in singling her out constantly, and ignoring flaws in other characters.

Tsuyama

in what way did they constantly single her out? if anything they prefaced each time with "this is just my opinion and i understand completely where shes coming from". they went so out of their way to express that its just about her character being grating, that they found her grating (as many people do), theyve literally said soooo many times that they admit other characters have their flaws too (so no they didnt IGNORE their flaws), but they found them more likable for reasons. what it really sounds like is projection coming from you and BJ, that you guys actually heard 1 thing you disagree with and then stopped hearing anything else.

Itbewhatitbe

didnt they spend like 10 minutes in the last video listing out every siblings flaws? literally the opposite of what youre accusing them of? ie ignoring flaws? its also not that rare for people to not like Shirley, its like every other post on the shows dedicated subreddit. she and steve and the most commonly disliked sibling, its almost as if theyre designed that way. so i really dunno wtf youre talking about

Spacecat44

Daaang, bowler hats off to George for picking up on the DABDA theme

Tsuyama

ah yes, personal attacks. the refuge of cowards and proven wrong.

ASMRish

It's actually advice. And these are all opinions, you're not 'proving' any universal truths.

Tsuyama

yaaa you know what, im just gonna utilize the report button. k bye.

Itbewhatitbe

S&G i know there are some people in the comments that are telling you guys to stop reacting this way or that way, or telling you youre reacting "wrong". I beg you. dont listen to them. we love you guys for your honest opinions and honest reactions. no one here, except for those few, want you guys to say what you think we want to hear, rather than whats actually on your mind. if you dont like a character, feel free to say it, just the same as if you do love a character. to those that have a problem with that and want them to not say something, feel free to leave, theres plenty of reactors that 100% just pretends and say what they think the audience want to hear.

Noel Valdez

That show is incredible. I was honestly thinking the exact same thing while watching this again with them. Lol but honesty Midnight Mass is the one of the best pieces of media I’ve ever seen in my life.

kbobravo

I love Hill House, but Midnight Mass is truly Flanagan's masterpiece.

Jeff I.

Is it just me or does it seem like Flanagan used a lot of takes where the actors flubbed their lines a little? Like there's been a few times where a character will start a sentence and then after three of four words kind of stumble and start over. Not just these episodes, but the whole show. Not really a bad thing, just something I've noticed at least a few times in each episode.

Grimbane42

I really hope they watch Fall of the House of Usher. It is so good. Midnight Mass as well is pretty fun too. Its also so fascinating to watch the same actors together in entirely different roles. I'd suggest Midnight Mass next and the Usher.

JiggyTurtle

I would love so much for them to see Midnight Mass

REDR58

The solution for a house with that kind of damage / haunting is fire and lots of it.

dys

No one who has lived near Amherst, Massachusetts pronounces it "Am Hurst", it's "Amerst", the "h" is silent. Cool cool, so Hill House is near where I grew up, that won't haunt me at all.

dys

Midnight Mass was fantastic.

dys

I think I love Hill House more overall, but Midnight Mass has my favorite ending of these Flanagan shows.

Blake Gorf

I wouldn't worry about it j. Everyone has a different perspective. Nothing wrong with viewing Shirley the way you have. I'm somewhere in-between. Her coldness is a bit annoying to me but they're all trying to cope with some enormous tragedies, and an unusual upbringing. I can see how she because the person she is.

TheSentry77

I've never really been a fan of jump scares, because they usually feel cheap and unwarranted, but I can safely say this is one of, if not THE greatest scares I've seen on film.

jefn

Alina

I really hope so too!

Noel Valdez

Do everything Flanagan!! Lol

Noel Valdez

Couldve been that they had a super short timetable to shoot so they couldnt do a ton of takes and he had to use the best of what he shot. I would expect thats what happened or he just likes those takes for whatever reason. Maybe realism. Lol

Itbewhatitbe

distasteful snide dig? lmao. shes a FICTIONAL CHARACTER. its not actually some ones funeral buddy. and like, of ALL the people both George and Simone had made fun of over the years, this is the one that got you triggered?? whats more sad is how is it not obviously clear to you that the joke is aimed at a certain type of people, rather than specifically Shirley? notice how they said things like hallway monitor, Erin from BCS? you know, all massive Karens that gets mad at comedians when it feels personal but jokes about everything else is okay, as if the comedian knows them personally. wait a minute...

Noel Valdez

I didn't understand that until years later so the fact he latched on to that so quick was dope on his part! I had to have someone explain it to me befoe I knew that. haha

Noel Valdez

I also wanted to bring the Steve has money comment. The fact that he's rich isn't the issue. Maybe its just a personal thing but I hate people who exploit others for some cash. Making the story of thier Mothers suicide into a little spooky book in the horror section of B&N is disgusting in my eyes. Also, the fact that he fucking published the book after your sister said not to is messed up. Maybe I could understand why he wrote it, but if after your sister clearly has a problem with it you still do it, thats wrong. Family is more important than being a famous author. Maybe its just my hatered of money and how people will bend their morals or break them just to make some cash. I'd have trouble if I had a brother do that to me. I couldn't think of how it would be like to have a story of your family member dying be turned into a piece of entertainment.

Noel Valdez

That movie is awesome. idk how a reaction would be like for that one honestly. It may not be the kind of movie for it but I would see it for they did it. LOL

Noel Valdez

I can understand why she'd be grading honestly, but I do agree with you on the blood money thing. Idk why it seems to be overlooked but what Steve did was fucked. Sorry, but I have a big thing for people who exploit others for some cash. Turning your own mothers suicide into a piece of entertainment is just fucked up in my eyes. Not only that but your family clearly has a problem with it Steve. He did it anyways though cause he wanted to be a famous author. Idk I really judge Steve for that. I like him as a character, and i relate to him the most out of everyone but thats one thing that I thought was really gross. Selling out your family for cash. Thats cool bro. Really cool.

Mike FromOz

It's a very quiet movie, and very different to what most people consider a ghost movie. But it really gives a different view of what haunting would be like from the other side, and the reasons behind it. I found it really moving, and I think both Simone and George would like it, but yeah, it's not the usual reaction material. But! S&G have watched a wide variety of movies before, and are OK with trying new things, so who knows? I don't want to oversell it, as I'd rather them get there organically, but still, it's just a suggestion 😁

Jonas

I'm not a Shirley stan or anything, but I'll just point out how lucky you guys are not to have a Shirley in your immediate family. She doesn't bother me at all, but that's because I have 2-3 Shirleys in my family whom I grew up with. You get used to it.

jefn

I myself read a poem at grandmother's funeral. So George's comment did sting me a little bit and maybe I made it a little too personal.

Itbewhatitbe

right, and how the fuck would he know that personal thing about you? theres literally thousands of patrons here, what neither of them can ever make fun of any characters ever again then? because probability tells us that ANYTHING they say, can and will be personal for someone.

jefn

You don't know me and there's no way you could have known. It was on me for not adding enough context in the original comment so I'm not gonna hold it against you for indirectly calling me a Karen.

jefn

I did, however, specify that I don't have an issue with how people perceive Shirley. You can like her. You can hate her. I don't care. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and the great thing about art is that lots of different people can interpret and analyse it in different ways. So I don't necessarily care that they pointed out that she is a hallway monitor and other things, because that's their opinion.

Tsuyama

jesus christ this fucking guy.

jefn

Ok fine. It seems as though I made an error in judgement and I made a hasty comment without thinking about it. It was probably stupid of me to take a harmless joke a little too seriously because of my personal experience. If you want to me delete the original comment, then tell me and I'll delete it. Sorry for ruining the vibes.

Itbewhatitbe

you do realize we can all see you changing your comments right? like when you make edits to make your posts sound less Karen-esque.

jefn

Or maybe I was trying to make it as reasonable as possible and not come off as harsh and aggressive.

jefn

Listen, I already conceded. I made a mistake. It's on me. You are right. It was stupid of me to assume that strangers on the internet know my life story and take a harmless joke a little too personally.

Bob Bittner

I’ll just say I don’t know what George has against poetry at funerals—or what he’s inferring about a person who chooses a poem over their own words—but I thought it expressed a beautiful sentiment perfectly. It’s a strong poem. And, like Shirley herself might acknowledge, it expressed the funeral “wish”—the loved one is just “away”—very well. (Maybe George’s comment was meant to suggest that Shirley insists on keeping her walls up, even at the funeral of her sister, and so she turns to someone else’s words rather than display her own vulnerability.)

Bob Bittner

I never interpreted it as “actors flubbing their lines.” I viewed it as actors delivering incredibly naturalistic performances. All of these people are at the top of their game here.

Bob Bittner

I expect their assessment of Shirley’s character to change substantially over the course of the remaining two episodes.

Jeff I.

Midnight Mass is really good and my favorite after Hill House, so I hope they do that some day. I personally thought Fall of House Usher was a big step down from Hill House and MM, since the script was poorly written and the plot is very simple and gets pretty boring after three episodes.

BubblyRainbows

At least Steven offered them all a percentage of the money he got for it. What he said in an earlier episode was right; He didn't have to ask their permission to write the book, and he didn't have to pay them. I agree that writing a book like that under those circumstances is pretty bad. But at least he thought about it and took some kind of step toward giving them compensation.

Stephanie Bedworth

See the thing that got me about the scene where he's offering to share the profits from the book with them, is that Shirley unilaterally decides that none of them are going to take the money. There's no discussion about it, doesn't ask any of them. She has no right to speak for them all there but she does it anyway and because of the way she is, she isn't challenged on it at all.

Liuzetz

This show has some of the best monologue scenes ever and ALL actor nailed them. The intensity, delivery, the sutilness in some of those are incredibly done and also, so damn realistic. The jump scare is great. Not only it does come completely out of nowhere, but it works as a "clean state" for Theo's monologue right after, as if resetting their argument and brains so they could put their walls down and finally talk. I do share the thoughts about Shirley and Steve as they are the most "annoying" characters because they both have the "better than the rest" way to present themselves. They are both flawed like the rest of the siblings, each one dealing with their sh8t the best they can and I do find that all of them are very strong but all try to hide their feelings and troubles as much as they can in different ways and Shirley and Steven's way is just more pricky and upwards than the rest. That being said, they are incredibly realistic and really well portrait.

Tee Pee

Theo's monologue about what she felt after touching Nell is a pretty apt description of severe depression...

Silver Linings Starman

The actor who plays Mr. Dudly is named Robert Longstreet. He's an extremely under rated character actor. I made a reddit comment a while back because his monologe popped into my head and the creator left a comment. He said Longstreet sent in a video in of him doing that monologe as an audition and they hired him straight away

Dane Winton

Yep, he is William Hill :)

Mrbluegrand

Oof, I usually don't comment negative things but damn talking over some of the most important dialogue imo, was difficult to watch. Just felt they weren't paying attention. Sry if I offend but had to get my frustration out.

REDR58

The thing is, since they have never seen the show before they react to it, they can't know what's really important dialogue. And they have to talk now and then to comment on what the are seeing, otherwise what's the point? Of course, this can be mitigated if they always have subtitles on, but not everyone likes to watch with subtitles on. I always watch something new for the first time with subtitles on because it's not uncommon for dialogue to be a little hard to hear or an accent can make it difficult to follow.

REDR58

Yep, real people do not speak perfectly, and sometimes stumble over their words or start over if they aren't getting their thoughts out cleanly or in the way that's intended. I like it.

Mrbluegrand

Well not necessarily, sure you never know what's coming next but I've seen other reactors better choose the time to voice their theories and thoughts, just not during dialogues. As I said before it felt like they weren't really paying attention which in all fairness might just be me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I personally am also not watching reactors just to hear their thoughts if that was the case I would just watch a review I guess, what I'm trying to say is there's more to reacting. Like does anyone know what George does when he suddenly starts typing and alt-tabbing during reactions?

Cinebinge

We understand where you're coming from Mrbluegrand and we appreciate the criticisms. The thing to understand about reactions is that during the movie, when we are engaged and interested, we have thoughts and want to share it with eachother and with viewers. While we try our best to not say things during dialogue or important scenes, ironically because our focus is more on the movie than being reactors, we forget all the rules of our job so to speak. We get excited to share a thought so we just say it, sometimes we realize what we're doing and cut ourselves off, other times we try to finish it quickly and move on. But ya, the irony is that because we are invested, we aren't always in "reactor performance mode" and keeping track of how long has it been since we spoke or is this a good time to speak or not. As for what I'm (George) is typing, its notes for stuff I want to say later. And ironically again it's because I want to just watch rather than speak, but don't wanna forget my thoughts that I quickly type it down for later.

Mrbluegrand

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Very well put. Not to sound like I'm backtracking =D but I've been subbed for some time and this is the first time, so it might just be that as I felt that part was important/good made you guys talking slightly over it come of as you not paying attention. Anyway much love!

Gollum the Ottoman

They need to react to Mike Flanagan's other show Midnight Mass. George especially would appreciate it.

Daniel Saunders

I can't stand all of the Shirley hate in this set of reactions. Other than that, I enjoyed the reaction. You guys are picking up on some things I missed on my first watch.

Ashton Lewis

Great reaction as usual guys. Just a couple of unsolicited points -Shirley's waste of gas line is basically the same as what Hugh said to Steve in the car, about searching for one person on the street in a city of 700,000 people. Driving around the streets would be pointless. Also, Shirley is being cold with her husband because she walked in on what she thinks was her sister and husband embracing/kissing
