“This guy was on an episode of Buffy!” You put some respect on Wentworth Miller’s name, Simone!

Twisty Twitties

Vampire Beckinsale was my crush growing up, The film was decent too 😅

Niklas Ericsson

I really hope you guys watch Underworld: Evolution as well as Rise of the Lycans. Both are excellent and greatly expands the lore. Rise of the Lycans is a prequel, so you get a lot more Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy and the entire Lucian backstory.

2026-09-05 05:00 George mentioned the style, for period of time after the matrix, everything was trying to be the matrix, even the X-men suit were black leather because of the matrix

2026-09-05 05:00 A Matrixy film you haven't watched yet is Equilibrium

rictus grin

i remember the best review of this i saw was from Jonathon Ross "Pretty Shiny bottom" one of the not so bad post matrix action films. that's not to say i dislike this movie it has its fun moments

Dwight Scarn

There was definitely a lot of cool things from this movie and it was enjoyable. Far from perfect. I couldn't stand the actor who played Kraven, he had soap opera acting skills. Also the way the badass Lucian died, no big fight just shot in the back by Kraven, anti-climactic as hell....I really do dig the vibe, and style though. Also the werewolf designs were great.

rictus grin

there is a great Russian modern fantasy movie worth watching Night watch 2004, i would suggest the Theatrical release for its amazing use of subtitles

rictus grin

fetish club fashion was a big influence on the movies from this time

rictus grin

vampires in mansions goes all the way back to the early days of vampire movies and sexy vampires started with the first Dracula movie the 60's & 70's hammer movies picked this up and ran with it. one of the more erotic vampire movies is The Hunger Susan Sarandon, Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie

Dwight Scarn

Equilibrium was great and underrated!!!

Dwight Scarn

I recently rewatched a bit of this and I immediately thought with trenchcoats and shoot out in the subway that's so matrixy lol

Wrencher86

I strongly disagree.

BT

Some of the audio from you guys is rough. One example 8:13

Happy Hanukkah

A reaction to the intro: [Note: a Dirty Old Man seems to have hijacked my Patreon account] 0:45 I have only one filling for Kate Beckinsale. 1:05 Don't tell George, George doesn't know! George doesn't know! George doesn't know! 1:27 "How ghastly for her, people actually thinking, with their brains, and right next door. Oh, the travesty of it all." 1:45 As even Oscar Wilde would have admitted, there's only one thing better than Kate Beckinsale in her outfit.

Happy Hanukkah

On the topic of stylish unconventional vampire movies, I shall mention Priest (2011), starring Paul Bettany (with several other familiar names, such as Karl Urban). Here is the stand-alone 2.5-minute prologue scene (done in animation by Tartakovsy): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fReUq5Wi9LI I should note that there are those who feel the main movie does not live up to this.

jmundt33a

Should definitely introduce George to Buffy as well.

Chris

Vampires used to live in castles. Rise of the lycans probably the next best movie IMO

Stugotz

Count Dracula was probably the first sexy vampire

myinniemademedoit

Simone, nothing wrong with only remembering Kate Beckinsale’s outfit from this movie… it’s a very memorable outfit.

Dwight Scarn

Definitely!! That was great!!

Mastervodo

I agree. With Wrencher. That I strongly disagree. But, I did watch it.

Tom M

Key and Peele did a sexy vampire sketch. Key ain’t having it. He just wants to live forever to see future cars.

Shaka, When the Walls Fell

Kate Beckinsale is awesome and gorgeous in everything I've seen her in, but the tight leathery look of Underworld will always be my favorite.

Patch

Honestly I would argue even earlier with the 1872 story Carmilla. Its just that one is lesbian vampires.

Patch

If you want more Lore™️ the I would recommend watching the second film Evolution whoch directly follows this one and also Rise of the Lycans which is a prequel that shows you Lucians origins.

FoH Film Club

I’ll keep this PG-13…but Simone as Selene…yes please

Oh wow, I REALLY loved this movie back in the 2000s. I own it on DVD - FULLSCREEN DVD. That's how far back my connection goes. One reason why some of the special effects look so good is that they actually use a lot of practical effects for things that other films would have used CGI for. There were full-body suits on stilts for some of the Lycans, and a LOT of wirework. One shot that always stands out for me -- but it's so fast that most people don't recognize it -- is during the "hallway chase" when the Lycans attack Michael's apartment. As they run down the hallway on the walls and ceiling, one Lycan jumps from one wall to the other as Selene is shooting at them. That was all practical: A guy in a Lycan suit suspended on one wall, then spinning through the air to the other wall. They did use CGI for other hard-to-get shots, but that one was real. Kate Beckinsale also did a fantastic acting job with her gunplay by not flinching or blinking when shooting. That's REALLY hard to do, and is one reason why dark sunglasses are so prevalent in action movies (So you can't see the actors twitching with every shot). There's so many long shots of her keeping completely still while firing, and that's really hard to pull off. A lot of the supporting cast was composed of comedians and comedy actors instead of experienced action actors. Most notably Bill Nighy as Viktor and Robbie Gee as Kahn. I think it brings something unique to the film, and really manages to work in a way you wouldn't expect.

Inkpendude

You guys should watch The Wolfman (2010) for a good werewolf transformation

Happy Hanukkah

Not incidentally, you brought up Equilibrium. :-) I generally describe it as a mix of The Matrix and 1984, starring Christian Bale.

Cory Garron

I loved this movie back in the early 2000s too, and own it on WIDESCREEN DVD. I was very particular to get widescreen back then, because I knew it was the future. I wish I could have found it streaming in HD, or UHD in Canada.

Simon Pegged Me

"I'll be in my bunk." But before I go, I'll throw out Polidori's The Vampyre (1819) as a possible source of the sexy vampire trope. I'll look forward to reading Carmilla to see how it treats sexiness, but I'm pretty sure it's a big part of Dracula. It's problematic in places and inconsistent, but in Stoker's Dracula, it's implied that Dracula's victim's must want him to feed on them. Building on that, there's a section of the novel in which the brides/sisters of Dracula seduce Jonathan Harker, so they can feed on him. Dracula steps in at the last moment to prevent this, and gives them a baby to pay them off (the problematic part. Lucy also feeds off children). Anyway, the point is Dracula's seduction of his victims is a significant part of the novel and its contribution to the vampire trope.

Simon Pegged Me

I love the thumbnail, primarily because it implies that [cue trailer dude voice] in a world where Simone is Selene, there are instances in which Selene says, "Jeepers." That's an Underworld I can get behind.

thomas king

Kate Beckinsale is so incredibly hot in that leather. Wow!

Joel

Regarding sexy vampires, I can think of maybe Bram Stoker's Dracula 92, there was also a TV series that was also an RPG system, Vampire the Masquerade, which was actually the direct inspiration for Underworld. Then there is the iconic Interview with a Vampire, which is super sexy and completely unapologetic about it
