Ooh, I'm pumped to watch this! xD I was in the middle of trying to catch up on Star Trek TOS but I'm putting that on pause until I'm finished with this one. :)

Mastervodo

I think this Rom-Com found Simone's button!

>One person built the AI engine? I mean, that's 95 % of games out there, but even if we're talking solid machine learning that got us to LLMs... if you abstract prior research, most of the steps really don't take that much manpower. Obviously compute for training is one thing, but then again, we're talking about a world where some sort of artificially intelligent entity is an emergent property - a system doesn't need to be complex for complexity to emerge, and if we suspend enough disbelief, that's definitely what could happen on a massive server. Well, if we somehow directly leveraged CUDA cores and client-side computing resources and all that. It's an abstraction, but it kind of isn't that far off. To get that kind of diligence, you'd need to watch Mr. Robot.

I think there is a problem with the reaction, at 1:09:30 George left and i think the movie was paused, but the timer and the movie on the background still going.

Cinebinge

paused during the movie to take the cat out of the room, forgot to cut out that part to resync the video with the movie. re-rendering new version now, will take 30ish mins. sry bout that!

Cinebinge

Cinebinge

When I first saw this movie, that beach at the end blew my mind because it's one of the places I grew up, Revere, MA! Home of the famous Kelly's Roast Beef which was also mentioned in Good Will Hunting =)

Thanks but looking for Grandma's Boy

Pete Luhtaniemi

That catscratch just fucked up the whole thing...

Jonathan Guzman

I know it's a long shot but I really wish you guys would watch Summer Wars. My favorite take on this MMO RPG plot device.

Kevin Rogers

George plans to show his dad the Barbie movie, confirmed.

Paul G

The "Blacklist" are scripts that have been passed over by studios for production. It's kind of a dramatic name for scripts that simply haven't found a home yet. It's actually amazing how many great movies get passed over and shelved, sometimes for years or decades before a studio decides to take a chance on them.

Adam Barry

In regards to George's comments about the streamers - I had no idea who they were when this came out, and still don't. But I can figure out they're streamers, so whether they are real streamers or just actors, the comedy is the same. Definitely didn't detract from it for me.

Odd Thomas

It's fun but basically The Matrix meets Wreck it Ralph. You should check out Spielberg's A.I: Artificial Intelligence.

k time to switch off the brain for this one

Justin James

Am I the only one who can't stand Ryan Reynolds? When it comes to actors (and their filmography), I'd put him down there with Dwayne Johnson.

Farbod

No its not. The Black List is an annual survey of the "most-liked" motion picture screenplays not yet produced. It has been published every year since 2005 by Franklin Leonard, a development executive who subsequently worked at Universal Pictures.

Tenn Seven

Aww, they didn't notice that Channing Tatum's player was the same actor that played one of the stoners in the Super Duper Mart in Fallout.

MikeBdrx

If you like movies with characters the see things when they put on glasses (I’ll leave it at that) you should watch They Live

JayF

I will not subject myself to this shitshow again. My only question is was George nice or did he skewer the plot holes? I'm hoping for the latter.

Sergio Meira

I always felt like a self-aware NPC... Now I know why!

Sergio Meira

Now, wouldn't it be incredible if this movie had George and Simone showing up as streamers and giving their opinion on Free City 1 and Blue Shirt Guy?

Shaka, When the Walls Fell

I'd like to suggest a "pop culture reference challenge" to see how outdated references feel over time and/or are forgotten with time. With that said, you should watch "Wrongfully Accused" from 1998. It is chock-full of references to contemporary pop-culture, movies, commercials, and world events. See how many of them you pick out.

TokyoLopez

Now we need a GAMER reaction, a whole lot better than this flick imo

Jasbro

I didnt see anyone mention this bit of trivia but the body for the Dude also played Juggernaut in DP&W.

Sumner Hayes

That's 100% right. A lot of the movies that make the list are in production already—the list even lists the producers for movies that have them, which is usually well over half of them. It's less of a “these are overlooked scripts needing production” list and more a “these are the upcoming/circulating scripts that producers like the most” list. Some of them wind up in production hell for years, some come out immediately, and some do lack production companies, but they're all on enough radars to top a popularity survey among producers.

Jasbro

Why are there people like you?, its fine if you dont like him or any other actor you're not special, but why do you need go onto a comments section for one of their movies just to ask such a dumb question?, just move along and wait for a movie/show reaction you are interested in.

Paul G

That's cool, thanks for the corrected information. I didn't realize it was a published list. I'll have to check it out!

Max Krause

To this day I have no idea who those streamers are, but I get all the references in the fight against Dude. Like George, I am confused by this. Is this movie meant for me, a 33 year old who played Portal? Then why are all those streamers who mainly appeal to a younger audience, along with "gameplay" that mostly resembles GTA Online and Fortnite featured so promintently? I like Ryan Reynolds and his style of comedy and I do think the ending was cute, so I mostly enjoyed this movie. But thinking about it makes you realise that it's just a cash grab that will be very badly dated by all its references.

Justin James

I’m sorry if my comment came across as derogatory, my intention was just to convey my own critique. George has mentioned a lot in the past how he dislikes The Rock’s acting, so i thought the comparison was appropriate, and that criticism of movies/actors was fair game on here. reading it back, it does come across as mean-spirited, so I’ll try to be more empathetic when having adverse opinions in the future… and to think twice before commenting. i actually thought the movie was fairly enjoyable, even if a lot of it wasn’t my cup of tea. I really liked Jodie Comer and Joe Keery’s arc.

droodly

To you and George. Is it not enough to know streamers and those types of games exist? They have to mention a streamer and game you love to make it a worth while story to tell? Actually curious. This is such an odd take to me.

Morion Williams

my third time watching the movie and I have never known who any of those streamers are, hasn't detracted from my enjoyment at all.

Amos T Fairchild

Hmm. They didn't recognize Steve (Keys). We love Steve. Have they not seen Stranger Things? That's weird. They need to fix that if true.

Philipp Roensch

I can appreciate this movie well enough, I think its minor logic errors and references fall to the wayside. Showing streamers is not essential to the plot, but should they rather make something up? I think it does one thing very well video game movies have been missing for years: feeling like playing the game, understanding their terminology and respecting what people make and play them. I see all the real world inserts just as an acknowledgment that there are communities behind every game. As a developer (not games, just general) I can even like the god mode and hacking competition. Axing the servers would not look like that in the program, but anyway it is a good tension builder. The developers vs disconnected boss subplot is appreciated and the love story just cute as hell. Certainly found the button with me this one :D

james repka

I'm old enough that I remember when Pong was the only video game. I don't play them (though I have no issues with those that do) and all I really know about modern games is what I learned from South Park. I don't know any of the streamers here, I didn't know those people were real folks playing themselves until someone told me. It had no effect on my enjoyment of this movie. All of these references will be dated someday, but I still think the story and the main characters will hold up. With Ryan Reynolds, Channing Tatum, Director Shawn Levy, and with cameos by Hugh Jackman and Chris Evans, Free Guy shares a not insignificant portion of its cast with Deadpool & Wolverine.

John

I would echo the suggestion of They Live as another movie focused on glasses. The scenes with Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum made me enjoy the Gambit and Deadpool scenes from Deadpool and Wolverine

Thanks for listing the run times! 🫶🙌

Simone, that “Believe It or Not” song you recognize from Seinfeld is most well known as being the theme song to the show “The Greatest American Hero” which came out in 1981 and ran for 3 seasons. It’s a sort of superhero spoof/adventure about a teacher who was given a super-powered suit by aliens but then promptly lost the instructions to it. It starred William Katt who played the guy who was nice to Carrie in “Carrie” Opening credits to The Greatest American Hero: https://youtu.be/GZ0U1Ri2uuM?si=-WvXzuAb8oADxvV5 Full song by Joey Scarbury: https://youtu.be/WqF5M7IK7I0?si=1m8dhbirTmGDRkbZ

I also had no idea those streamers were real streamers. It didn’t affect my enjoyment of the bit at all. I got that they were at least representative of celebrity streamers. That was Hugh Jackman’s voice by the way.

Richard

You two are my favorite reactors to watch movies with. Always watching movies I completely forgot about!

Sooo the finding their source code in the new game, that was seemingly straight out of Tron movie story which Disney owns. Fun movie thanks for sharing your viewing experience.

Charlie Keeler

A show suggestion when a new slot opens up…Mythic Quest , on Apple TV

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I vaguely remember watching that show as a kid and loving it, my favorite bit is how he could never quite figure out flying, especially the landing part. And that the show begins with William Katt being gifted the super suit, but missing the instruction manual. Underrated 80s classic.

Re: All the Disney-owned references This movie started as a purely Fox film, but the Disney/Fox merger ended up delaying the project(then covid delayed it again). Because of the delay for the merger, it was effectively a Disney film by the time it was done(even if it still carries the 20th Century Fox nameplate for contractual reasons). This meant it only took an email to Disney to get permission to use the shield, arm, and lightsaber(plus the matching music). In fact, when the movie team asked for permission for one item from a list, they were told they could use the entire list if they wanted. As for Chris Evans, he happened to be shooting in Boston for Defending Jacob at the same time Free Guy was shooting there. Ryan sent him a text to see if he was available, and Chris said he could do it if they could get it all done in 10min. I don't even think they did makeup or wardrobe; he was probably already made up for Defending Jacob, so they just touched him up, sat him down, and did a couple takes. I believe he did it for the proverbial cup of coffee(which means SAG-AFTRA minimum scale). Other cameos: - Hugh Jackman as the gamer avatar near the beginning(Jackman is also why Guy jokes that he can recognize an Australian accent even though Jodie Comer actually is British) - Dwyane Johnson as the little girl's avatar in the bank that Guy shoots through the chest - Tina Fey as the voice of the vacuuming mother of Revenjamim Buttons - John Krasinski as the voice of the silhouetted gamer being interviewed

Kyle Liquori

We need an edit of George's cat doing cat things in the background lol Edit And Simone's cats. I can't forget the poor baby cone moments.
