Mr. Writhms

"A Piece of the Action" is one of my favorite episodes, being a gangster movie fan. I've been waiting for this one! 🖖

Emily G

You guys should watch Mad Men or Outlander at some point. 🙏

Darin Foat

The Vulcan aversion to lying isn't an inherent biological trait. It's simply part of their philosophy. They understand the concept, but don't believe in it themselves. Of course they aren't always attuned to it, but Spock is a bit more aware, having spent so much time around humans.

Keith Brown

So weird , George did not like "Tribbles" but loves "Piece of the Action " for me they are they are from the same wheel house of Trek fun episodes. Well I am glad he did have fun with "Action".

Amos T Fairchild

In Star Trek, their scanning and transport capabilities are limited by the necessities of the plot.

Itbewhatitbe

i think having the episode set in 30s chicago makes it pretty clear its a joke episode. where as tribbles came across as a societal message about environmentalism initially and he thought thats where they were going, which in turn made the jokes felt out of place.

Keith Brown

Sulu/George Takei was filming the John Wayne war movie "The Green Berets" so he was missing for several episodes of this season.

Amos T Fairchild

You guys are going to have to watch the Original Series films.

Monica Alarcon

Sadly we never see Signs Iotia II again. But they do return in comics and novels. In some versions they're still gangsters but are now space faring. In one comic story they have adapted to their idea of Starfleet with uniforms and rudimentary technology and stuff like that.

Rupert Purcat

Your opinion on your feelings for a show is just as correct and relevant as everyone else's. Just perhaps not as relevant and correct as mine. ;)

Temba His Arms Wide

I hope you continue on to the movies and TNG when you finish. As much as I love TOS I'm really only watching reactions to my favorite episodes. If you do TNG I'll watch nearly every reaction and every movie reaction. Plus there aren't enough Star Trek reactions on YouTube so I always love to see more.

Ginger

I'm always watching for your genuine and honest impressions, that makes this channel so great. I imagine if you went into an episode or movie knowing that it's a beloved, revered classic 1) expectations would be much higher and 2) there's always a bit of a different view. For example, I don't think anyone can watch a widely considered cinematic masterpiece like Citizen Kane, Commando or Casablanca and be completely unaffected by it's impact on culture and the art form in general. But especially with these old TV episodes, I like watching your reactions because you're giving the fresh perspective of a modern audience that isn't looking at it with rose coloured nostalgia glasses. If I want that, there are multiple podcasts where lifelong trekkies give detailed analysis. Which is also great.

Data Cable

Since Simone brought up DS9's 30th anniversary tribute "More Tribbles, More Troubles," one of the writers' earlier ideas was a return to Sigma Iotia, to discover that they had been "contaminated" by McCoy's forgotten communicator, essentially producing a planet of Trekkies. Their loose description actually sounds kinda like what Galaxy Quest ended up being.

StonyD

In my estimation, the reason Trouble with Tribbles is so beloved is because the show itself had to be taken "seriously", and this was the first time the show allowed/requested the viewer to laugh AT them, not just WITH them. Even with all of their banter, the emotions and drama had to be serious, lest people start only seeing brightly-colored clothes and technobabble. TwT broke this mold as it allowed the humor of the day, slight parody, slight slapstick, accompanied by "zany music" ties to frame a story in their primetime. It showed that for all its grandeur, this cast and show didn't always have to take itself seriously. And from this we have learned, out of all the examples, only the TOS crew could successfully be funny LOL!

Monica Alarcon

That's what happens in the comic. Star Trek Unlimited #10. Picard's Enterprise goes back and they all look like Starfleet circa Kirk's Enterprise.

Data Cable

"The Immunity Syndrome" is a textbook bottle episode. Zero guest stars, uses only standing sets, even the music is re-used from previous eps (notably "The Doomsday Machine.")

StonyD

George, Vulcans CAN say things that aren't true. It just doesn't occur to them because it's not a logical approach. Also, Spock is a little "autistic" at times. He gets easily distracted by the details. lol

Hans Czajkowski Jørgensen

George: "I assume people want our actual opinions, not what they want us to say". I for one do. Never doubt it, George.

Hans Czajkowski Jørgensen

Sorry. But I have to oppose the cynical view of people in general here. it's not always nice to be surprised by perspectives different from my own, but it always tends to reveal nuances I would otherwise overlook. I don't have to agree with George, but I believe I can still (mostly) see where his perspective is coming from. That's an important muscle to exercise. Otherwise debates would be impossible. There are a lot of people still getting plenty of exercise. 10 minutes later: I am sorry if I come off too categorical in my comment. I can see you are aware that not everyone just wants corroboration. I have strong feelings on this issue. They sometimes get the better of me.

Brandon

'A Piece of the Action' has always been a favourite of mine. I don't care if a planet filled with 1920's era gangsters makes no sense. And don't worry, George. The Deep Space Nine episode "Trials and Tribble-ations" that crosses over with the original series episode is actually a lot better IMO.

StonyD

Bones is my favorite Star Trek character of them all. He has the most personality and humanity.

3dbadboy1

I believe Sulu was away doing films like the Green Berets. He does have other projects and he probably negotiated the time away.

Karen Leah Quinn

I think that the "god-like beings" trope in early Star Trek (and even ongoing later Trek), is just a way to have the crews outmatched, at least seemingly so for the first part of the episodes. There was very much a "monster-of-the-week" base level for episodic TV of the time, and especially with genre TV like Star Trek. Later seasons of Trek (TNG, DS9, etc), still sometimes use the trope, but there is often a much more over arcing narative to the later series and seasons, that make it a bit less noticable. When it comes down to it, the 5 year mission is all about finding out what is out there, and I guess there is less drama in finding nice planets with chilled out civilizations each week. Kirk needs to be challenged, and beating gods is his speciality!!

Actuarial Lurker

He WAS filming Green Berets so had the week off...

Sergio Meira

Don't worry so much about the Tribbles episode, George. You expected one thing and got another--it happens to everybody! I have watched several episodes of various shows that turned out to be different in tone from what I expected. I had to re-watch them with the right frame of mind... but it definitely happens! Don't worry too much about it -- it was a great reaction!

Sergio Meira

So... did you guys think "A Piece of the Action" was another silly episode, like "The Trouble with Tribbles"? Most fans would agree it is.

Hans Czajkowski Jørgensen

Thanks for your answer, D.T. At least you and I can disagree and discuss at the same time without yelling at each other. That has to count for something. :) Your cynicism is totally understandable. It's tough to debate people who won't listen.

Simon Pegged Me

Do your authentic worst, George and Simone. It's what I'm here for. The day you show up to perform "George & Simone" is the day I lose interest in the channel and your content. Until then, let 'er rip! For instance, Bones is my favorite character in all Star Trek, and I'm loving watching you have the exact opposite reaction to him. My only fear is that you'll have such an adverse reaction to one of the episodes that you stop watching the series. But since you kept going after The Alternative Factor—"What of Lazarus?—I have high hopes that you'll make it through to the end (as awful as an upcoming episode truly is). 🖖🏿

SuicuneSol

You didn't like Tribbles, but loved a Piece of the Action? You'll never live this down lol. Immunity Syndrome is a great episode. Was looking forward to that one.

Mike FromOz

If I felt you both were starting to fake your reactions to anything you watched, I'd start to lose interest in the channel, to be honest. I've seen plenty of reactors who either go too far in their reactions, or people who just sit there like a bump on a log at even the most heartfelt and devastating scenes. Your channel feels like one of the few places where the reactions are more honest. So, no, I don't mind when you don't like something, and would prefer you stay that way than feel you have to like everything to please everyone. I'm not much of a fan of Kevin Costner's work, except for Dances with Wolves (especially the extended cut), which I think is a masterpiece. Do I mind that other people vote for his films and like them, or that you might also like them? Not at all! Everybody has their own likes and dislikes. I am sure there are folks who didn't like "The Death of Stalin" as much as I did, but I was glad you both did, but would have been ok if you hadn't either! In the end, just stay true to yourselves and what you both like. You've both got good hearts and great senses of humour, so stay on that path and you'll be great in the long run 😁

Alan Kobb

What is the price of a reaction? It is the reality that your reactor might not like that which you love. My cousin is looking forward to 2 years from now when his grandson will be old enough to watch his favorite trilogy, Lord of the Rings, but he confided to me "what if he doesn't like it?" I told him that's not likely, so don't worry. I have no problem with George not liking the tribbles. Of course, now he will have to live the rest of his life in shame as being only my second favorite Cinebinger!

SnabbKassa

I am not so familiar with TOS, but I suppose TNG reactions are looming. I take it Simone has seen all of it. But the question comes up - are you going to heroically slog through the first and second seasons as Jen Murray did, or are you going to omit the obvious dud episodes?, which Simone can decide upon if she re-reads the wiki pages about them.

Alan Kobb

I'm not sure that it's possible to satisfy George. Two episodes ago the enterprise was endangered by a bunch of bunnies (OK, tribbles...), and this episode it's an amoeba, and yet you still complain about so many godlike beings. Actually, in most cases "godlike" is just the makeup that the creature wears, and more often than not the godlike being is just a mediocre being trying to look godlike. In other words, they're a lot like politicians.

Andrew Roach

I never got the impression that George didn't like the Tribbles episode but merely he thought it was something it wasn't and that threw him for a loop which is not the same thing, am I wrong? Knowing what the Tribbles episode actually is now do you think it is a bad episode? No answer required as maybe I don't really want to know. I also find it interesting that you were concerned Tribbles was not an environmental show considering that 'Nuke The Whales' poster behind you, hehehe. Ok, joking aside I find it cool that Trek can flow from wacky comedy to serious social commentary to battle to even horror.

Lanny Fisher

George is a smart man, and he has seen a broad sample of Star Trek episodes, which is why I am confused when he is continually surprised by the lack of “big ideas” in each new episode he watches. Star Trek is light comedy sci-fi fantasy with some dramatic elements. It was designed for a mainstream 60s family audience which did not have exposure to the vast collection of big idea content that we do now. The goal of the show wasn’t to make people think, but to entertain. Every now and then it did have big ideas, but that is not the norm.

Lanny Fisher

And having said that, I immensely appreciate honesty. I feel like most reaction channels are pandering and overly effusive. I am a Cinebinge patreon because your reactions feel authentic.

GAB

If George wants big idea SF, with interesting aliens, perhaps he needs to watch Babylon 5. A lot of original Star Trek was more like cheesy space fantasy. In truth, SF on TV has ever come close to matching the ideas available in SF literature and I doubt it ever will. The Expanse was not to his taste, but Babylon 5 with its Lovecraftian-like influences - albeit mild -might be more palatable.

gfixler

We saw that one guy from Piece of the Action before. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2790621151096613/?multi_permalinks=3105932446232147 And if that link doesn't work, here's the text: > John Harmon played the character Rodent, a street "bum," in "The City on the Edge of Forever." Rodent encountered an unstable Dr. McCoy, only to be disintegrated by the doctor's phaser. Harmon also played a gang leader Tepo, in "A Piece of the Action." Tepo discovered that you cannot hold your phone and keep talking while you are being transported by the Enterprise. John Harmon passed in 1985 at the age of 80.

James Wilson

Absolutely prefer your genuine reactions/opinions. It would be incredibly boring if you guys liked everything and never had any criticisms or opinions of your own. Anyone who gets upset that you don't share their exact opinion regarding a TV show is being ridiculous. And Star Trek in general can be very hit or miss with its episodes.

michael denny

at least bones never had sex with a lantern ghost Simone........lol

Bandaloop

In "Piece of the Action" Spock didn't tell a lie. He has never computed the odds of a Royal Fizzbin.
