I'll take the window seat and pretend to sleep, cos that's a nice comfy spot... lol.

JediLounger

This is an OK to pretty good movie for me, but an absolute banger of a Daft Punk music video. And speaking of their music videos, you guys should check out their feature length music video, Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (2003). They made it for the Discovery album. On an unrelated note, you guys said you wanted to watch the original Nosferatu (1922) before you watch the new remake. I support this idea, but you should also check out a forgotten little film called Shadow of the Vampire (2000). That movie is hilarious, and it ties into the mystery surrounding Nosferatu, and you guys would love it.

Amos T Fairchild

The 17 hours from Dallas to Melbourne Australia was the worst lately. Just too damn long for an economy seat.

Odd Thomas

Great sequel. Another good film by Joseph Kosinski is Oblivion, with Tom Cruise. Only The Brave is good too; based on a true story. For more Jeff Bridges I highly recommend Starman by John Carpenter.

Tay Schumaker

Movie worth it for the amazing Daft Punk score alone

Vwlss Nvwls

I would pick crying baby, because they are more likely to give me a break, whereas the other two choices are a constant pain.

Vwlss Nvwls

I enjoyed this sequel for the most part, but there were a few things that annoyed me having seen the original in the theater, and watching it close to 100 times by the time this sequel came out. Overall, I did enjoy this one though.

Amos T Fairchild

And I really feel this film was setting up a great sequel that unfortunately never happened...

Odd Thomas

I think Cillian Murphy was supposed to have a bigger role in the third film but so much time has passed I feel like he won't be in Ares. Olivia Wilde directed a good comedy called Booksmart, then Don't Worry Darling, which was a mess.

Opti_Frog

The visuals, cast, FX, music by Daft Punk, production and costume design all amount to... A very long and enjoyable music video. The script is what holds Tron Legacy back from greatness. George mentioned early drafts during the trivia section, which is kind of weird, because the film released feels like an early, or even first, draft. The exposition is really clunky and unengaging, there is never a real sense of danger or peril, the character Tron is more or less an afterthought, or worse, a fan service, character motivations are overall fairly weak, Clu is not a particularly successful digital de-ageing and the ISOs were both naive and wise at the same time...? It is a film that fails to live up to its potential. And yet, i return to Tron Legacy quite regularly. Despite everything, there are many scenes, moments and visuals in this movie that are almost transcendent, pure cinema, totally transporting and enchanting. I mean, i had Quorra, lounging on a sofa, as my desktop image for like a year before the film's release. But you could screenshot (screenshoot?) the film at almost any point and have an amazing desktop background.

Opti_Frog

Watching original Nosferatu, then Shadow of the Vampire and then 2024 Nosferatu seems like an excellent triple-bill to me. 😀

Tron takes place in 1982 and this film starts in 1989. Assuming Flynn meets his wife at the start of 1982 and has their son at the end of 1982, (which I don't think would be the case, being that he's just taken control of a company) that boy playing Sam is 7 years old. Seeing a 61yr old Jeff Bridges made to look 30 something through de-aging is strange enough, but that boy playing a 7yr old when he looks 12-13yr old is also just as weird. The de-aging didn't hold up in 2010, but Olivia Wilde made up for aesthetics mistakes. Like some have commented the script is messy. A product of too many people each wanting their own thing. Just another half baked Disney sequel that may have never been able to live up to the original, but still missed the mark in many places.

Vwlss Nvwls

Jeff Bridges/Flynn also said "that is one big door" when that giant vault like door opened in the first movie. Yes, Bruce Boxleitner played Allan/Tron in the first movie as well as this one. Since there is another Tron in the works, I assume the character of Tron will be back. It would be nice if Boxleitner was involved as well, but since Tron has never really been the main character it seems unlikely.

Vwlss Nvwls

I am with George. I never understood why people like Jared Leto. I have never found him entertaining.

D. T. Nelson

Destroying Clu meant destroying everything—including the only remaining ISO, Quorra (essentially, sentient AI)—the one thing he wanted to protect at all cost. Once he knew that Quorra would get out (along with his disc containing his collective knowledge of everything he had created) he was free to take out Clu. I believe the intention was to make more movies, but since it didn't do as well in theaters that didn't happen. Yes, Bruce Boxleitner played Tron in both this movie and the original. Music was by Daft Punk (after getting some guidance from Hans Zimmer on film composition)

Mike FromOz

Great soundtrack! The rest of the movie though... ergh. My main problem with the film is it starts from the very beginning by removing stakes from the film. The main character goes to the edge of a building. A security guard who would definitely not be paid enough follows him out just for exposition. Then the dude jumps off the building (why?). But he's ok because he's got a parachute. Then he rides his expensive bike out to the dingy part of town, parks it outside without securing it, opens up the old place, but doesn't lock the gate behind him. He's good looking and the main character, so he doesn't need to worry. It takes all the threat elements out of the film, so we know he'll be ok as the movie progresses. And I also agree about the lightcycle race. In the original, it looked like split second decision making was the key to winning, and the fact you could only do right angle turns limited your options. In this, the race was far too casual, with the cycles imitating real life instead of the element of a computer. Ultimately, the music is good, some of the visuals are cool, but the lack of stakes, desire to back the main character, and a pretty hollow script makes this a bit lackluster for me. I have no idea where they intend to go for the third one that is going to come out. I hope they don't stay in the same vein as this.

lol, you're extremely kind hearted Simone! I'd just flat tell them that I'm not interested in talking with them. YES!! I wanna see your terribad haircut Simone! :P Growing up, I had some pretty terrible cuts - mostly during the school year and of course they happened right before photo time happened! xD This movie's so awesome, you guys! I've been looking forward to you both checking this out! Very happy that my fellow Patrons voted this in. :) lol, I'm enjoying your ideas quite a bit! I feel this movie holds true to what Tron is while also appealing to a modern audience in a modern world. xD George you're digging too far with this one, man! :P Love it though! hahahaha Yeah, no - this story follows Sam. I LOVE the soundtrack in this movie! It's so rad! :) lmao, love that you two are stoked about Vancouver. :) This movie includes a great cast for sure! lmao, accurate take George! Of course he's a bad guy! lol, when has he not played a villain? lol, he is very Bruce Wayne in this! xD "Is he Batman?" lmao, I love you Simone! hahahaha Marv is the best doggo! <3 Makes me feel very happy seeing him! I'm not sure at all Simone. I don't remember Alan in that movie. See! xD The soundtrack in this movie kicks so much ass! Listening to this gives me so many happy feels. :) xD That secret door's so cool! Love how he found it, too. Yup! He's trapped in the digital world. lol, it's kinda crazy that the building hasn't had a single power outage in all that time. Love your enthusiasm with this Simone! :) Makes me feel very happy to see. Sexy time incoming! ;) lol, kinda goofy, yeah. But they're super cool, I feel! Watching them all walk backwards like that was awesome. Glad that you're enjoying this George! Love seeing your guys' faces during this scene! Simone looks confused as hell and George is just looking like he wants to understand. Simone got it! Good job, Simone! :) lmao, a loser! xD You're great, Simone. Light Cycle time! :) I super dig on this! Yeah, man!! The music in this movie kicks so much ass. lol, yup - very Mass Effect. lol, Quorra's awesome in this! No idea when the terrible website was made. Likely before, but I'll confirm once this ends. This isn't sad for me but it's definitely emotional. Yeah! She was in House, I'm glad that you liked that show George. :) It was definitely a good one. Yup, RIP Tron. CLU is Cyberdine/Skynet, yup. Great comparison George. No, she isn't bad. Kind of confused why you'd consider that George. I never once thought that she was! But hey, everybody sees things how they see them. Nope! Cillian Murphy's done in this. I'm very glad that he wasn't included in anything beyond the real world. I'd of been disappointed that other people in the real world had impact on this world. lol - isn't that hard to tell who's good/bad in this. I wasn't confused at all when I first watched this in theaters. xD STOKED that you're jamming with these tunes George! Fuck yeah, man. :D Castor's pretty darn cool! lmao, accurate take George! Very David Bowie, 100%!! He improves these scenes so much! Nothing but joy when I see him. :) Castor's such an awesome evil dude! Very enjoyable, indeed. :) lmao, keeps his charisma while being twisted. Her innocence is adorable in this! hahahaha, wow1 That noise was awesome Simone. :P Accurate take, George. :P Smacking a computer often makes it work. :P He did speak like that in the original, yeah. That's why it carried over to this. Sure, they may've gone a bit overboard but I don't mind it. Burn it down? lmao, you're aware that sequels were made for this right? lol I don't know about my fellow Patrons but I'm all for voting on the sequels immediately. They may not be as cool as this one but they're still a ton of fun. :) Love that you loved this George! I'm with you on enjoying the first more - for those reasons. This one's awesome nonetheless though. The mid section may feel a bit slow and the climax is rushed for sure!! But the end was also super entertaining and fun. HAHAHAHAHA, I loved that Cillian Murphy was only here for a minute! lmao, I was cracking up earlier when you two were expecting him to be some huge part in this. I feel that they did a great job in this movie! lol! I love Simone's face when she heard the $13,000,000 amount! :) Stoked that you both enjoyed this. :) I did as well!

REDR58

I don’t think the de-aging is that bad in general. What makes it fall apart for me is the mouth animation is just not good enough.

pinkdino99

One of the greatest soundtracks of all time - Daft Punk whom appear in the End of Line Club in their traditional attire. This was set up to be a series (at least a trilogy) but bombed at the box office. Thankfully it looks like we are going to get a sequel. Some of the ideas in here are stunning (ISOs spontaneously manifesting/ CLU as an AI chasing down imperfections). I adore this film !

MrTickleTrunk

"Why didnt Flynn re-integrate Clue earlier?" Sam asked Cora "why doesn't he re-integrate Clue now?", outside their rooms in that dark hallway at the start, and she said Kevin Flynn wouldn't survive. He finally did it to protect his son. :) That was the circle pull-thingy and the explosion.

G P

Great soundtrack but the 5/10 rating is accurate

CT

Sam is played by Garrett Hedlund, previously seen as Brad Pitt's "friend" Patroclus in Troy. He's also in Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) which is quite good.

gobmob2000

I always laugh when they show IT/computer technicians or engineers use a touch screen keyboard in film, sure it looks cool, but they are awe full. Anyone who actually works with computers on a daily basis, and has to type a shit load of command and edit 100's of config files, would never be caught dead using a touch screen keyboard on a daily basis. However, the commands he types in on the console "whoami", "login" and "history" are real unix commands, and where more or less accurately shown, including the feedback he got when he logged in with "backdoor", with the response of "no home directory specified in password file", that is a real thing. I'm glad that film is getting a little better with representing computers today, but it is still awefull.

p0sthum4n

Saw this in the theater on opening night while tripping balls on shrooms. Great night.

Martin Nicholls

Fun fact: Cillian Murphy is actually uncredited in this. He'd done Batman but Crane wasn't a particularly big character even in Begins. Total side character to like 30 seconds in The Dark Knight. Or put another way he wasn't super well known - I'd argue that Inception was his big breakout role, and it was about the same time as this - well, it was like 6 months before but post prod would have been done on this by that point, let alone screenwriting and shooting. You can't somehow add him back in because he suddenly became well known. I do think this movie is underrated. It's also flawed, but I think it's underrated. It was an era for Disney where they were shoving some more adult-targeted good movies out the door that weren't getting the respect they deserved - Tommorowland is another good example of that. The CGI thing did look good on release, it very quickly became a bit ridiculed too though - I agree with you that they could have played it off as intentional CGI except the opening scene where they shouldn't have fully shown Bridges' face would have definitely helped. The other thing that would have helped would have been to do the same thing for all the programs - but that would have obviously been way too expensive. Oh, also, on the wardrobe budget - this is why things like that would be done in pure CGI now; and there have been movies that wanted to do similar that have done exactly that. On the third movie, there's definitely one coming - but what is probably less well known, though I recall from the time - there was supposed to have been a direct follow-up to Legacy, it was called Ascension and Garrett Hedlund would have returned as Sam Flynn. There was also The Next Day as a special feature (it's on youtube) which presumably bridges the gap to what would have happened in Ascension. Then it all got burned down what must have been like 10 years ago now and Ares has been in development hell ever since, which is always a great sign for a movie. Also the thing happening to Flynn at the end, that's the mooted "reintegration" of Clue's code which is discussed earlier in the movie - it's also not a huge stretch to presume that Tron didn't die.

Martin Nicholls

I'm almost certain that screen we see the word "Ubuntu" from memory, which is a bit of a yikes. As for touch screens, at a conference room table, you could do worse. I'd have preferred it if they'd showed it as a giant Microsoft Surface Table (not to be confused with their tablets which came later and were way less cool) or something - but it's highly plausible as a piece of tech you could use at a pinch. I'd have whipped out my laptop - but laptop keys aren't a lot better for usability and ergonomics than a touch screen anyway..

FranciscoGios

We (we as fans) think the flickering blue light on the Microdrive is Tron and somehow he is still alive in the Sea of Simulation. One of Micheal Sheen’s favorite movies is Tron, when he found out that they were gonna make a sequel he wanted to be in the film, so his agent of the time helped by calling Disney that his client is a perfect cast for any character in their Legacy film that they said yes.

Simone's Coconut Squire

Yeah the third act suffered from a severe case of "ThisIsGonnaBeAHitWe'reGonnaDoASequelitis"

dasgrove

Fun movie, but the story is built to expand into a franchise. It leaves several characters unresolved so they could be brought back in later films. But the movie flipped and killed any sequels (except the anima). This leaves a messy movie.

StonyD

George, I would pick the talkative old person. Don't want to be stuck between two big peeps and don't want to be stuck with a crying baby. At least the old person has some kind of life experience to share.

BlindPanda

Jared Leto sucks and ruins movies

James W.

Leto is a scumbag, I don't think all of his performances "ruin movies", that is why he keeps getting gigs. I liked his performance as Niander in Bladerunner 2049, I just wish he wasn't a scumbag so his groupie-groomer actions wouldn't tarnish good projects.

Donna Castellano

Please watch TRON: Uprising. It's a great canceled too soon animated series that takes place between the first film and Legacy. Elijah Wood voices the main character, if that entices you, George. 😁

James W.

I kind of hate this movie's story while enjoying watching and listening to it. This is like many of the newer Star Wars films, in that the script is dogshit but the art is good; play it with an isolated soundtrack and you're good to go. Just don't pay attention to it because it quickly fall apart under its own weight. Bruce Boxleightner is the actor who played Alan/Tron in the original and in this. He also did the voice for Tron in the animated series 'Tron:Uprising' which was very good (Better than this movie), and a mediocre game tie-in which wasn't worth the time, but was cool to hear his voice in. I believe Cindy Morgan, the actress who plays Lora/Yori in the first movie has a cameo in this as Lora. RIP to Cindy Morgan she passed away this year. This film is plagued with too many writers or something, because you can see the frayed edges of plot lines and characters that just got excised. They formed what was left into a palatable film with no personality outside of its visuals and the top tier soundtrack from Daft Punk, and then just abandoned the franchise...again. Cillain Murphy being cast as the Dillinger's son (Sark/MCP/baddi from the first movie) and then never seeing him again is emblematic of some executive interfering or the director losing his way maybe. Anyway, it was my biggest disappointment of that wave of necrophiliac reboots of my childhood fixations in the early 2010s.

StonyD

Yes, the "other guy" is the original Alan actor Bruce Boxleitner. He was famous in the 80's for the spy show "Scarecrow & Mrs King".

Andrew Roach

I don't recall seeing him in anything else but I found him to be great as the baddie in Blade Runner 2049.

Andrew Roach

Bruce Boxleightner I believe is best know for being the star of the final 4 seasons of the epic Babylon 5 tv series, my favorite sci fi series of all time even over Star Trek which I love.

Ari Ramirez

So! There's couple of plot points you had no way of knowing because this movie had a MASSIVE multimedia campaign back in the day. The page that Alan gets was the result of an ARG, where a hacker group called "Flynn Lives" searched for the truth of Flynn's disappearance. This ARG included scavenger hunts in both the real world and the internet, and ended with them very briefly communicating with CLU by accident. Quorra mentions a sympathetic program helping her escape; this was the plot of the movie's tie-in videogame, Tron: Evolution, in the which you control a silent program called Anon through the events of CLU's takeover. You even get to meet several ISO characters on it, but unfortunately it's really hard to get these days since it was a part of the Games For Windows initiative, and it's never been re-released outside of the Xbox 360 and PS3. There's a short video series that came out with the movie's home video release called "The Next Day" which shows some of the fallout of Sam's actions after taking over Encom. Tron technically survived CLU's attack, but was severely wounded. He then went into hiding, and eventually began a rebellion alongside a program called Beck, voiced by Elijah Wood in the (sadly short-lived) animated show Tron: Uprising. ...you can probably tell I love this movie, to the point where it inspired me to get into computer graphics, which is something I still work in to this day.

Paul Schmitt

I thought Legacy is just as good as the original. I can’t wait for the third movie Tron: Ares in October 10, 2025.

SpankTheMonk

Completely understand liking the story more on the first. I like the upgraded tech, Daft Punk music, and stunts.

Tyler Foster

Was waiting to see if you guys would actually react to the fact that the music was by Daft Punk but either you knew and didn't think you needed to comment on it or you totally missed it. They do state earlier in the film that Flynn could destroy CLU by reintegrating himself with him, but it would kill him, which is why he doesn't do it until the end of the film. You picked up on it in Alita: Battle Angel, so I'm surprised you didn't here: the dangling threads, like Cillian Murphy's son-of-Dillinger and Tron disappearing in the water, among various other things, were setups for a sequel. In 2010, Disney had the notion that their movies were skewing too female-centric, and they wanted to make some sci-fi projects that would hypothetically attract more male audiences (I'm equivocating because that's their logic, not mine). When this movie was only just kind of a hit, landing in a gray area between box office success and underperformer, Disney went back to the drawing board...and eventually purchased Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm instead of continuing to try and looking at their own IP for new projects. That said, they did *almost* make a sequel to Legacy five years later. In 2015, they were gearing up in Vancouver to make a third Tron that would have been a more direct sequel. Just a few weeks before production was supposedly set to begin, Disney pulled the plug on it, and would go onto launch Tron: Ares years later instead. No real details on what that other, unmade third Tron was going to be beyond the fact that Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were supposedly set to return for it, and I've just seen that some concept art is floating around out there. Although no real plot details have been released on whatever Tron: Ares is going to be, it doesn't look like either Hedlund or Wilde is back for it, so there is the impression that it will be less of a direct sequel. I'll be curious to see what it's about.

Nate Terry

Sam asked Cora frustratingly after they first met and argued why Flynn couldn't destroy Clu if he created him. Cora said he could "reintegrate" Clu back into himself but Flynn wouldn't survive it. Remember, Flynn digitized himself to be inside the grid. So he could create a digital copy of himself. So as the master user, he could reintegrate Clu but apparently it would cause a cataclysmic disruption that destroyed everything. If it weren't for Cora being the "miracle" that he was protecting, he probably would've destroyed it all just to end his prison torture. But with Cora, he kinda had a reason to keep the grid up and Clu alive.

REDR58

And of course Kosinski also directed Top Gun Maverick. I think Simone and George would really enjoy “Oblivion.”

REDR58

This movie looked amazing in IMAX 3D. I was lucky enough to see it that way twice on its original release. During the scene with the young Sam and his father in the boy’s bedroom, as the various TRON action figures and other toys are shown, there is a brief moment where a toy figure of the robot “B.O.B.” is seen on the shelf behind the two toy lightcycles. “B.O.B.” is a character from the 1979 Disney Movie “The Black Hole.” Back in 2009 it was reported that Tron Legacy Director Joseph Kosinski was going to film a remake of “The Black Hole” but the the project was cancelled. So “B.O.B.” was a little Easter egg that unfortunately turned out to be a tease. When Sam enters the secret office under the arcade, the handheld “Electronic Quarterback” football game that his father was playing with in his upstairs loft/office in the 1982 “Tron” can be seen sitting on a piece of furniture. The game was made by Coleco and released for sale in 1978. 2 songs from the Journey, “1990s Theme” and “Only Solutions” appear in the 1982 Tron movie and on its soundtrack. A third Journey song “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” appears in “Tron Legacy” and starts to play on the arcade’s jukebox when Sam turns the power back on before he finds the office: https://youtu.be/LatorN4P9aA?si=WDoFaLStgBqRE10_ The original iteration of Clu from “Tron” 1982 was also yellow. He is the only character in either of the movies to be yellow except for the “YES” form of the Bit. A clue that Rinzler is actually Tron is that the “T” symbol made up of 4 squares is seen on the chest of the original version of Tron and also Rinzler: ▪️▪️▪️ ▪️

Drew

My favorite review of this movie when it came out was “it’s basically a two hour Daft Punk music video”, which is worth the ticket price

Redrum Ritual

I've seen Tron Legacy so many times, but I had goosebumps watching it again along with you. I'm shocked you two like the Tron movies because all I heard was people just didn't care of both movies. It felt like I was the only one who was a fan. Both movies weren't really big hits when they came out. Tron Legacy drew like $409.9 million on a $170 million budget. I didn't know the suits costed $13 million lol. There was a tv show called Tron Uprising and a video game Tron Evolution both taking place before Tron Legacy. There were plans to start filming a sequel called Tron Ascension but according to Garrett Hedlund, who Simone was crushing on through out the movie, said those plans were cancelled because a forgettable flop called Tomorrowland bombed badly to where Disney lost faith in another Tron movie. I guess a new script has changed their minds to where they feel they got something here. electronica duo Daft Punk did the music for the movie. The greatest movie soundtrack ever. Trent Reznor going to be doing music to Tron Aries which feels like a more darker tone sequel.

Farbod

My love for this movie is irrational. I know it has some issues, but its just so enjoyable. The music and the characters are fantastic.

Rupert Purcat

It is such a shame it was filmed in a location without a sun to rise in the morning for that last year.

JediLounger

No, but that is also a remake of Nosferatu. There was another remake last year with Doug Jones as the vampire. Simone and George said they wanted to watch the original. I figured we should stick to the original + Shadow of the Vampire since that’s not a remake and it riffs on it. And the only remake they would watch would be the Eggers version.

REDR58

The Tron Legacy soundtrack was certified Platinum or over 1 million units sold in January 2023.

Dave Lewis

I saw this at the cinema and found it to be utterly mediocre. It's a bit more bearable with these two talking over the top though.

J.R.

George have you seen the news that Nolan's next project is an adaptation of Homer’s 'The Odyssey'? Will be interested to see your reaction in 2 years!

Steve G

I’m glad you guys liked it. I saw this film twice in theaters. Overall the story was great, but most of all, the music by Daft Punk was amazing.

Andrew Roach

I really enjoyed George's comment that too much CGI is a bad thing but this movie is an exception as it basically takes place in a CGI world. Re-intigrating Clu means Flynn dies so indeed that's why he didn't do it earlier as that is a last resort.

BigGuy209

Garrett Hedlund who plays Sam. The two other movies his in are Friday Night Lights (2004) & Four Brothers (2005) two very good movies.

Luc Zettwoog

I don't see enough people mentioning it. If you like this universe, I highly recommend you to watch (react to :)) the animated mini-series Tron Uprising. For me, it contains the best of both movies, endearing characters (Elyjah Wood does the voice of the main character), once again magnificent visuals (borrowing more from this movie, but still with good nods to the original) and an incredible expansion of the lore. And if you're wondering, it takes place before the events of Tron Legacy. PS: About Cilian Murphy, this film was released in 2010. Although he had already starred in a number of major films (28 days later, Batman, Inception). He wasn't yet the super star he is today (this was just before Peaky Blinder too) so it's not so surprising that he was still playing very minor roles at the time.

Christopher Greenley

Bruce Boxlightner is the same actor that played Tron in the first movie. The role he's most famous for. Is playing Captain John Sheridan on Babylon 5. He didn't make an appearance until the second season.

HansD

So now you guys have watched two of Joseph Kosinski's three masterpieces (Top Gun: Maverick being the other one). His magnum opus is Oblivion (2013) which he also wrote. It is visually sublime.

Marylou inProgress

Yay I'm glad y'all enjoyed this one! Yeah just by virtue of the visuals and soundtrack this is one of the most fun movies I've ever seen. The story about taking the company back is cheesy but I think it works well enough, even if it is a bit disconnected from the main antagonist. Totally agree with George about the structure of the first one being better. I prefer the first one for that reason too. But I think both of them are super underrated. Definitely not the best movies ever but still a couple of my favorite. They both just have so much style and heart, and I love how they're both super earnest and cheesy at the same time xD
