Other Patrons have characterized season 3 correctly - it IS the weakest (by far). Most of the fun of season three revolves around debating which episode is the worst of the series, and there's a LOT of competition in season 3. (Yes, there are episodes worse than "Spock's Brain". That's saying a LOT.) My personal pick: "Turnabout Intruder".

prunyan prunyan

"Hail hail fire and snow!" (Just to follow up, "And the Children Shall Lead" is also a strong contender for worst episode of the series).

Da Big Appa

If I missed this I apologize but are you planning to watching the TOS movies before/during going to TNG?

Cinebinge

we will be! though since there are so many we havent figured out how exactly to do it yet. but that is the plan

Mastervodo

I've gotta say - I kinda wish y'all had skipped TOS and dove right into TNG. Or, just hit a couple episodes + the movies. If y'all will be Trekkin' through all the series, I'm hoping between TNG and DS9 you will be watching them via "air date". It just makes more sense. But - that is still a long way off!

Da Big Appa

Sweet. Looking forward to it.

One reason season 3 suffered is, even though NBC renewed it, they stuck it in the Friday death slot, so Roddenberry basically checked out and was barely involved, which had an adverse impact on overall morale.

Brent bmc_comix

I will say TOS overall has a better average, granted that's 3 seasons versus 7.

Itbewhatitbe

yeah but Simone hasnt seen TOS either. i like this, i mean lets not forget this began as a free extra thing they decided to do. Wednesday use to be empty with no uploads. they just chose to give us more content at no request, so why not make it last. and since its always extra bonus, not watching parts that are not personally interesting is not a loss.

The Gorgon in "And the Children Shall Lead" is played by Melvin Belli, who wasn't an actor - he was a famous celebrity attorney at the time. I have no idea how he turned up in this episode.

At the end of season 2, NBC announced that Star Trek was cancelled, but there was a huge fan outpouring, culminating in a big letter-writing campaign and phone calls to the NBC office. NBC relented and decided to keep Star Trek around, but then they dumped the show in the worst timeslot, 10:00pm on Friday nights. As you can imagine, a show that was most popular amoung viewers age 15-35, this was death. As a result, a number of talented people working on the show left, such as Producer Gene Coon. Knowing that the show was doomed at that timeslot, Gene Roddenberry took a promotion to Executive Producer, and left the day-to-day showrunning to a Hollywood hack, so the quality of season 3 is overall some of the worst.

I enjoy TNG quite a bit! I've loved TOS so far - I'm a bit anxious to watch season 3. I've got no idea what's going to be happening this season. lol, I've had no idea with this show in general. So yeah, I'm very happy to be watching this with you both! Oh - I love the terrible episodes! Lots of fun - even if they're acting and trying to make it cool. :D Euphoria plant episode was wild! :) lol, a smiling Spock was strange for sure. I'm digging on your predictions! :) So much fun. Okay, so I watched both episodes with their reactions and I didn't enjoy either one of them. That's so strange for me! I've enjoyed most every episode of this series but these two - nah, I didn't like either one of them. lmao, I won't lie - I think my feelings toward these two were influenced by what both George and Simone said at the start about how unsure they were about this season as a whole. xD Whatever though, I'll continue watching and hopefully I'll enjoy the rest. :)

The Dilithum crystals are used in the engine, but are not the fuel source. The Enterprise uses a matter-antimatter reaction to provide energy. Based on current (21st century) science, such a reaction could provide huge amounts of power, and hypothetically any matter could be used (even air, for example). In Star Trek, while they don't explain this, they have evidently solved the problem of acquiring and storing antimatter. Saelish might not have been qualified to be medicine chief. The problem here is that this society is run on a system where the medicine chief's son becomes the next medicine chief, and he has some very criticlal information for the survival of the people. Obviously this is a dangerous situation. Any medicine chief could have died of an accident or disease. Remember always to keep a backup of critical data and crifical chieftans!

Season 3 is weakest, but there are some worthy eps in there. And since you’re bucking Trek consensus sometimes (Mirror Mirror is considered one of the best episodes; Paradise Syndrome one of the worst) who knows when they’ll happen. Glad you’re not skipping around.

Sergio Meira

Indeed season 3 isn't the best; season 1 of TNG isn't ... the best either (they were trying to do TOS but with 80's flavor, so many episodes just flopped). Season 2 TNG is an improvement, but overall still not so good. From season 3 on, in my opinion, things get much better, after TNG realized it wasn't TOS and shouldn't try to be.

Sergio Meira

I guess part of the problem is the '60s (episode shows from that decade were often... repetitive and formulaic), and part of the problem was the authors getting used to the feel of this show -- exploration of space, and its multiple possibilities. They were a little green, there weren't many great sci-fi movies to see as examples to follow (except for Forbidden Planet), and they were just trying stuff to see what would work without much previous experience. So I do cut them some slack -- which I wouldn't do for shows of today, with so much more experience to draw upon.

On vacation and you don't feel like going back? You just described your viewer base

Monica Alarcon

Hi, would you please tell us the run time of Legend of the Drunken Master so we can get the version you are watching ahead of friday? Thank you.

D. T. Nelson

Sometime shows start off fairly strong, then decline (ST:TOS). This happens when you have good writers with strong concepts, and actors and directors who understand what is needed, then they run out of ideas and good writers leave the show. Most of the time, however, you get a rocky start as the writers and actors are trying to find the characters and then build good stories around those characters. (ST:TNG, and to some extent DS9 and Voyager—though we got lucky with DS9 which started out pretty strong and mostly stayed strong) Bones coming onto the bridge at the end and saying "The children are crying! I don't know how it happened, but it's good to see" is kind of equivelent to when he was slapping pregnant women. I guess the studio had a problem with him slapping children. Good to know they draw the line somewhere.

Nicholas Bielik

One thing to keep in mind about Season 3 of TOS is that Roddenberry has effectively lost control of the series by this point. He was just sort of sitting in his office being frustrated and probably thinking about other projects. He had secretly organized the fan letter writing campaign that saved the show between seasons two and three, but he was effectively put out to pasture by the network who brought in Fred Freiberger to be the new showrunner.

3dbadboy1

The ship is powered by a matter-antimatter reactor and channeled through dilithium crystals to amplify that power.

Actuarial Lurker

George: The prequel series Enterprise has a 2-part show set in the same alternate Universe. It is hilarious.

Actuarial Lurker

There are 7 or 8 good to great episodes among those in Season 3, along with the clunkers...

Actuarial Lurker

Episode 3 is ultimate crap. They film in the woods outside LA with white people pretending to be alien Native Americans...with typical overacting

Kurt Hockenbury

Season 3 of TOS and Season 1 of TNG are eh, overall, with a few good episodes. But, you do have the TOS movies to do in between, and those are mostly good to very good.

Brandon

You guys might have picked a great time to peace out on Black Mirror. I just found out they're doing a new season and one of the episodes is a sequel to the 'USS Callister' episode. 🤢

Khan1001

WOW, you guys are troopers, I gave up 3 weeks ago, just waiting for you guys to get to the Movies & TNG now. I love Star Trek but TOS S3 is awful with the exception of a handful of decent eps. Cant wait for you guys to watch the movies & TNG! Also, did you say you were gonna do DS9 & Voyager as well?

Actuarial Lurker

And episode 4 is about space grooming---BUT 4 or 5 of the next 6 episodes are pretty good

TwoBitWriter

Once you finish the series and watch the movies (The movies are generally better than the show). You may get a kick from the Trekkies documentary. Not so for the fan stuff, it doesn't really paint them in a good light, but the cast interviews are great, particularly the TOS cast interviews. James Doohan helping a suicidal fan and DeForrest Kelley's story about a special fan letter are particularly golden. Those interviews are on youtube and worth watching.

mky

"I am Kirok!" <- I've been waiting for that. Sheesh.

Jasper Collins

I'm still praying we get some TNG too. Picard my beloved <3

Brien

You guys planning on checking out The Haunting of Bly Manor sometime? :-)

Mikebdrx

No matter how yall decide to watch them I’m 💯 here for it!

Perry Campbell

That’s crazy mirror mirror is one of my top 5 episodes. Just shows different taste. I will try and keep positive attitude on George rants 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵

REDR58

I think you can space apart the original series movies with the TNG series. There really isn’t much of a problem that way at all.

StonyD

Isn't Simone talking about the one where Troi keeps dreaming she's floating in a green void? "Night Terrors"?

Perry Campbell

Fun fact mirror mirror episode was so popular they produced collectible trading cards some are worth over 1000.00 dollars each.

I remember seeing the pumping the legs thing back in the 80s, in things made probably in the 50s and 60s. I wanna say Looney Tunes, or Gilligan's island, or The Three Stooges, or something like that, and maybe to bring someone back from drowning, like they were pumping the water out of them. I remember learning CPR in the 80s, and it was a lot more about mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Later, it became about half and half chest compressions, and the course gave us all mouth things you would stick in the person's mouth, then breathe into, so you wouldn't communicate saliva. These days it seems to be all chest compressions.

gfixler

Can't believe George made no jokes when Kirk was holding his wife's head in his hands at the base of the obelisk, memory just restored, and Spock asked "Captain, were you inside this structure?" 👀 "Boy was I! Oh, the obelisk? Yes."

SpankTheMonk

Simone doesn’t like the episode with “Where are you…” bit by Deanna Troi. But I believe it has a really interesting concept of communication with an alien species. So with even tough episodes that drag, boring, or feel like recycled scripts form ToS there is still parts that are interesting. I don’t like the idea of skipping any episodes or seasons of good/great shows. You experience the lesser you get to relish in the greater.

SpankTheMonk

If you are spacing out because of your channels schedule and showing approach that makes a lot of sense. But I do appreciate sequels watched closer together as that is your privilege of watching later after they have been released. Thanks for sharing. And Generations can be watched much later in your viewing of TNG as that doesn’t conflict with the ToS movies or TNG series as far as I understand.

SpankTheMonk

I think I read that they got better producers who got better scripts/storyline’s. And stepped into character growth.

SpankTheMonk

Yeah the interference of the asteroid is a strange conceit of the episode. Better interpretations of the non-interference will be presented in TNG. I wonder if CPR wasn’t the same in the 60s? It’s nice and I like that they attempted to answer the humanoid question in this episode. Feels like some inspiration for the episode comes from A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court novel by Mark Twain. Kirok sounds like Turok. I like how they didn’t have a happy ending, growth of the show.

SuicuneSol

That's a good one! I don't think it's hammy at all.

SuicuneSol

Oof, tore into Mirror, Mirror. I can't argue against George because it's a matter of personal preference here. It's just a fun episode where we get to see evil versions of a bunch of characters. Isn't that always fun?

Brent bmc_comix

I could be wrong, but weren't they talking about "The Alternative Factor" from season 1?

SpankTheMonk

The kids are not alright 😱. Oh wow of kids did that to their parents if they both watched the episode, that is creepy as f-u-k . Was Simone bullied as a kid by a girl like that? Sorry if so. And if it was as an adult I am even saddened more for you 🥺. Grandpa might have been an alcoholic.

Sergio Meira

I agree. I think TNG first started with TOS as the example it was seeking to emulate, so many planet-of-the-week episodes felt like they would be better with Kirk, Spock and McCoy... Then someone realized they had interesting characters whose growth and development might be worth it, more than simply the great SF ideas. TOS was the 'big SF' ideas -- you barely see any development in the characters (Kirk, Bones, McCoy, and all the minor characters like Chekov or Sulu or Uhura, are basically the same people in the last episodes that they were in the first). TNG went beyond that. Even though there is a solid nucleus to Picard, Riker, Troy, Data, they do not finish the show as they were in the beginning. And that was an interesting change, showing more maturity in the show.

SuicuneSol

Oh that makes so much more sense. That was a bad beard.

Logan Kerlee

I always try to do that. :) Thank you for reading my thoughts!

Simone, George, since you mentioned you weren't sure how to do the movies, I found this website a long time ago which lists all episodes of Star Trek and the movies, by broadcast order: http://startreklist.blogspot.com/2011/04/list-of-all-star-trek-episodes-sorted_05.html The best option may just be to follow the release order. This would intersperse the last two movies (Star Trek V and Star Trek VI) with TNG—it might actually be nice, since that way you get to visit the old TOS crew a couple more times. Note that this list doesn't include the newest series, but you're a long way off from that anyway! I'm really enjoying your watch-through of TOS! Thanks so much. I think you'll really enjoy the TOS movies. I can't wait for TNG, which (as has been said) is a little rough in its first season, improves markedly for the 2nd season, and *really* finds its feet in the third season.

Theo Bracco

About the intro, the song is the same, but the color is bluish instead of yellow.

gfixler

As part of my schooling, we had visiting movie people, like animators, effects people, etc. It's not a Bruce Willis acting cliche, but you reminded me... one of the visitors told us that on a film he worked on with Willis, Bruce had a "stunt runner", because Bruce had a very effeminate run. Apparently Bruce knew this, and used someone else for running scenes. I don't stand behind this knowledge, though; it's a 25-year old anecdote.

gfixler

I always wish people coming along later would just experience things in the order we all did originally. Reordering anything always feels false to me.

Angzarr

Simone might actually have been right about the little girl being evil IRL! The actress seems to be connected to violent fringe animal rights groups, and: "In 2004, she accused the parents of Kelly Keen, a three-year-old child killed in a coyote attack, of murdering their daughter and using the story of an animal attack to cover up the crime. This was part of her protest against public efforts to control the coyote population near suburban homes" This doesn't seem to be true and it's really cruel to accuse parents of a dead child of something like that just to advance a political agenda.

Patrick - Excelsior

The name on one of the tombstones of the parents is "Tsing Tao" which is the name of a city in China, now written as Qingdao. Tsingtao beer was originated there. The person playing The Gorgon was Melvin Belli who was a famous lawyer that had defended Jack Ruby, the man who shot Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassin of President John F. Kennedy. Hiring him was a publicity stunt. One of the children was his son.

Angela D. Mitchell

Oh my GOD. This is the most Shatner episode that ever Shatnered. And I'm with Simone -- that little girl is evil. Seriously.
