"Little did he know..." Naw. He knew. He's been up since before dawn. He did chores. He had breakfast. He has coffee. And now he watches the clock turn 08:00 (beep beep). He hits play. He loves this film.

Ginger

Yay, so looking forward to watching this later today <3

Amar

Oh this will be a fun watch!!

Ruth McLoughlin

Can’t wait to watch this with y’all later this afternoon. Also you two should add Orphan Black, His Dark Materials, and Midnight Mass to your long list of eventual shows to watch/poll. I think you guys would really enjoy them!

Ginger

I'd love a reaction to "His Dark Materials" (the show, not the movie). It's been one of my favorite book series for over 20 years and I'm so glad it finally got the adaptation it deserves. Sadly due to NO marketing whatsoever, it got no recognition at all.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Gem of a film! As comedically gifted as Will Ferrell is, I really hope he does more roles like this in the future because his earnestness really shines in this film. Even I wouldn’t turn down his “flours” haha. Also will say Marc Forster has some real standout movies under his belt, and will put in a recommendation for “Finding Neverland.” As for exit strategy, I’m always magically running late for an appointment - yes, even on a Sunday 😏

Mastervodo

Can't wait to get home and watch Simone be all weepy over this movie!

Ruth McLoughlin

Yeah, I had no idea it even existed until my bf showed it to me a couple months ago and I fell in love. I had seen the movie as a kid and liked the idea of the world a lot, wish I realized they were books back then lol. Reading them now!

Theo Bracco

1.) Temperature is going up to 29°C today, so nice!. 2.) I can handle 1/2 persons on a "constant" base and up to 5/6 on a "same location" all day. And while I can handle being alone all day, and I'd cherish it, I won't choose it. 3.) You should show the poster that you see while you describe it, so we can see the same thing that you see. 4.) Marc Forster makes weird and great movies, Marchine Gun Preacher, 007 Quantum of Solace, Finding Neverland, Monster's Ball... and is working on a Thomas the Train & Friends movie (yeah, WTF?)...

Sergio Meira

It's around 60°F here, so almost perfect (I personally prefer the 50°'s, but 60° is OK.)

Monica Alarcon

You've seen Queen Latifah in 22 Jump Street as Ice Cube's wife...

Darin Foat

I'm so glad you guys liked this. There's a fun cameo when Harold talks to the goofy company counselor who talks about trees. It's Tom Hulce, aka Mozart from "Amadeus". And the Edna Mode looking psychiatrist is Linda Hunt, who won the Oscar for Best Actress in 1984 for a film called "The Year of Living Dangerously".

Opti_Frog

I consider Stranger Than Fiction to be a sort of cousin to Groundhog Day. Both are high concept dramedies where an unexplained phenomena causes the main character to undergo significant life changes for the better.

Vellu

Once again, I suggest Rain Man (1988), where Dustin Hoffman won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

JLee

Really upset with myself for having not watched this until now! Very Charlie Kaufman meets Italo Calvino... Now I need to reread "If on a winter's night a traveler"

Rhinehold

I've been so looking forward to this dropping all week since I saw it announced, could hardly contain myself. So when I got the notification, I was all over it!

Ginger

The best exit strategy for annoying conversations I've learned from Birdemic: "Aaah, I think I hear a mountain lion. Gotta go!"

D. T. Nelson

I can't say there is anything 'like this', because this movie is so unique. One sort-of similar movie (enjoyable, but not as ood as this) would be The Secret life of Walter Mitty, or maybe Ruby Sparks. If you just want other good movies that are a little off beat, try The Fisher King, Pleasantville, or, if you really want to go weird, Being John Malkovich.

Thomas Thompson

So glad you guys finally watched this, I hope this reaction kicks off a lot of other reactions, copyright issues not withstanding. Now about Philadelphia... ...its not like this movie, but still recommended. Plus you get Denzel and Tom Hanks. Both so young its sad, in so many ways.

Tyler Foster

That said, that's mostly about her demeanor and stature than the hair, which I think is inspired by Anna Wintour. George and Simone would have previously seen Linda Hunt as the Shadout Mapes in David Lynch's version of Dune.

mky

Small talk exit strategy: Wait for the slightest break in the conversation and excitedly say, "OMG! That reminds me of my favorite Star Trek episode called Spock's Brain where..." and start describing the whole episode in detail (until the other person bails on you). 🤡

Mike FromOz

I really loved this reaction. I was fortunate enough to see it in the cinema. It's remained a favourite of mine since then. I hope you can see now why so many people were insistent that you should watch this, despite it not polling as well as some of the other films that were in the running. Those of us who had seen it knew it was a great movie start to finish, and it really showcases Will Ferrell's ability to act outside of the regular roles he is given. Even if he is hilariously funny just sitting in the middle seat of an articulated bus. I also find solace in this movie. I'm a determinist at heart, I don't believe in free will. It can be perceived as being fatalistic, but I find it liberating. I am doing what I would always be doing, which is being an artist, and there isn't any other option available. It helps get me through the tough times, to know I am still on the path I was always going to be on, so you just have to run the highs and the lows and go with what happens. Live your life, love your life, love other people and love helping others live their wonderful life too. If I were in Harold's shoes, and had learned that I've been able to do that, I wouldn't be upset with having it end that way either.

Tyler Foster

Monica beat me to it, but you've seen Queen Latifah once, in a cameo in 22 Jump Street. For more Latifah, the obvious recommendation would be her Oscar-nominated role in Chicago (2002), or her Christmastime charmer Last Holiday (2006), in which she takes on a role once developed for John Candy. It's funny that you mentioned Sherlock Holmes in the review. While the way in which it is unique is not similar to Stranger Than Fiction, one of the movies I was thinking of as a similarly underrated little movie that blends comedy and drama and which features a comedy star playing against type is Zero Effect (1998), a great riff on Sherlock Holmes. So glad you two finally got to this. Since it appeared on a poll a few months ago it's been in the top reactions I was really dying to see from you two. I hope the YouTube version can stay up; anything that helps expand the word-of-mouth about this lovely film is great in my book.

Mastervodo

"Little Did He Know". This phrase reminds me of that phrase that TOO MANY reactors use WAY TOO OFTEN! "Without further ado". I cringe whenever I hear that phrase! There was no ado here for you to cut off any more ado! In fact, I would prefer more ado! Much more furtherance of the ado please! Did you know, that at a significant amount - around 60% - of fans prefer MORE ado? Hello everybody and welcome to "More ado than you could ever want".

The Astral Nut

This is definitely a great surprise of a movie. I don't even remember how I first came across it but the moment I did I was grateful. Almost all the parts work perfectly, the emotion, the humor, the character. Any chance I get I try to recommend it to people. Was such a unique idea for a movie to that I had really seen at the time...also, definitely fell in love with Maggie Gyllenhaal after this one. haha. Loved your reactions.

Rhinehold

I was pretty sure they have seen Tombstone as well, she was a pretty 'big' character in that as well.

Odd Thomas

Glad I kept my old DVD; this is oddly hard to get hold of in the UK now, at least in HD

Odd Thomas

A fun Queen Latifah movie is Taxi. It's a guilty pleasure.

Alexrandom

I said in an earlier comment that this movie wasn't that good and hoped you watched something else instead. I was mistaken. This might indeed not be the best movie I've seen but it felt really good and sometimes it's enough. Thank you guys.

AgentFalcon

"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (2013) with Ben Stiller and "Up in the Air" (2009) with George Clooney has some very similar vibes in my mind.

Ginger

Thanks again for watching this one, loved your reaction! :) You asked for other films that are in some way similar and the first that came to mind was my favorite film "Interstate 60". A film that almost nobody knows about. It's by Bob Gale (the only film he wrote and directed besides Back to the Future) and starring Gary Oldman, James Marsden, Christopher Lloyd, Michael J. Fox, Kurt Russel, Amy Smart and Chris Cooper. I don't want to get into the story because of spoilers but it's a very creative, unique, philosophical and fun movie, I think you'd enjoy it. One thing I love about Stranger Than Fiction is, if you look closely in the beginning, Harold keeps visually coorecting his surroundings. If there's something asymmetric, his mind makes it symmetric which everyone with any degree of OCD will relate to. <3 He even refills the soap dispensers in the public bathroom to make them look equal. It's never called out but a nice little detail. I think I only know it from the audio commentary. Oh and this film was literally what inspired me to buy a guitar and learn how to play. The only scene that Youtube kind of ruined for me xD when Harold made that wave sound with the files, I almost wanted the narrator to go: "Harold was way into ASMR". :D Some more great, relatively little known films with a similar mix or heart and comedy: - Be Kind, Rewind - Sideways - Thank You For Smoking - Night on Earth - In & Out

Jeff Demarest

"Everything Must Go" is another Will Ferrell movie that is a bit more dramatic with some comedic moments. Other movies that have this quirky feel would be "Seeking a Friend for the end of the World" and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty".

Odd Thomas

A similarly themed film about life choices is Vanilla Sky, with Tom Cruise. Like Stranger Than Fiction it's kind of slipped through the pop culture cracks over the last 20 years, but it's just as good (and yes I've seen the Spanish original and no it's not as good)

Steve kephart

This is one of my favorites as well. I really enjoy it when a goofy commedian does a more serious role and kills it. Another one of my favorites like that is Jim Carrey in The Majestic. I know he's done other less goofy movies, but this one is the best one of his IMO.

Steve kephart

It's funny, I always grouped this movie with Secret Life of Walter Mitty too. They have the same "feel". Also, Mitty has an incredible sound track.

Ginger

Important question: What's the more romantic gift: A bouquet of newly sharpened pencils or "I brought you flours"? (I actually helped someone move once and when I handed over a box of flours, of course I quoted this film. Because how can you not? ^^)

Ginger

Oh, thank you! I read his name in the credits and couldn't remember where I knew him from. Right, Amadeus. Also exactly my thought when they said the psychologist looks like Edna. :D

Denashi

For another dramatic movie with an actor who is normally known for comedic roles, please watch Reign Over Me with Adam Sandler!

Stephanie Bedworth

There's definitely a severe shortage of reactions to His Dark Materials out there. I can't understand why. It's a damn good show. I think they'd probably end up enjoying Midnight Mass a lot as well.

Stephanie Bedworth

Well, this reaction did not disappoint. Thank you so much for watching it and I hope when it pops up on Youtube, it'll encourage other channels to do it. Such a great movie that's been largely forgotten about, kind of like The Fisher King. A Queen Latifah movie that you two might be interested in is The Secret Life of Bees.

Ginger

To answer your question as to who I'd want to narrate my life: I'd like Patrick Stewart or Michael Caine. But with my luck it would probably either be Gilbert Godfrey (rest in peace) or 80s Bobcat Goldthwait.

Lou Gallucci

Fantastic movie. One of my favorites. Also, the soundtrack is mostly spoon, which is also awesome.

TechPriest

The photo of Evelyn McHale is absurdly famous, there's a strong chance you've seen it before and just don't realize it. It's been the inspiration for a lot of artists in various forms including: Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Radiohead, and Kanye West. While the story of how it came to be sounds macabre, it's had a global impact on humanity. It's important to this film in particular because her death was violent, sudden, unexpected, and hauntingly beautiful. She looks untouched and as if she's napping on top of a crumpled car.

Jonas Buckner

Yes, I am relieved to know that I am not a golem. I've been looking forward to this since the first time it was on a poll over a year ago. I knew you guys would love it. It's one of the most perfect movies for this channel.

Ginger

They'll just have to deal with the most heartbreaking scene ever put on film in season 2. If you know, you know. And of course, to quote youtuber Sesskasays, "the Roger of it all". But they liked Logan and this has Dafne Keen at her best.

Logan Kerlee

I live up in the PNW where it's 39. Chilly but not freezing cold. lmao, I'd approach you Simone! I don't mind strangers. I am a solitary creature. I thrive on alone time. I have a roommate that lives with me and I see him daily - aside from him I don't see anyone, ever. xD I'm VERY similar to George's girlfriend. hahahaha, awesome! I'm definitely the sort that shuts my doors and blinds. My room is my cave. Most all of my socializing is done online. lol, I'm the opposite to you George! I love online gaming but in person is just very ehhh for me. I just don't vibe with it most of the time. I'm not making a potato but hashbrowns sound YUM right now. I'm going to have to take a break midway through this movie. I wonder what'll be happening when I leave to the doctors! :) lol, I'll be sure to say when I leave. lmao, I didn't mention when I left, sorry. I didn't comment along with this movie like I do with most all of the reactions that I watch. I just watched the movie and got the vibe from it instead of focusing on every detail. I've never seen this before or heard much of anything about this movie. So I'm in the dark with this one! I just finished the movie and wow!! This was so awesome! Definitely an emotional end that I wasn't expecting but it's one that I'm not bothered by. Overall, amazing watch that I will recommend to others in my life.. Big thanks to whoever voted this one in! :)

Skyruff

I have been pushing for you two to review this movie for so long, I don't know what to do with my life...I might consider piracy... maybe i would make a good Dread Pirate Roberts.

Seymor Butz

So glad you watched it, and seems like you liked it as much as I did.

Kartik Negi

Try 12 Angry Men trick when they all started becoming nonexistent to that old person, ignore them completely so they get desensitised by themselves I did it once

akaTheBARON Tokyo Drift

I meant to suggest this during "Hidden Figures" since that was a "based on a true story" movie, but plum forgot until now. But "The Founder" is very good. Michael Keaton plays the man who "founded" McDonalds (McDonalds as we know it anyway). Won't say too much bc I know you like going in fairly blind if you can, but a great cast along with Keaton, is definitely a more interesting story than the premise implies, and as far as "based on a true story" movies go, it's fairly accurate. They take the same liberties as any of these movies do for time and pacing purposes, but they didn't just completely change most of the details simply to make the movie good (looking at YOU Rudy...)

Jeremy

One of my favorite movies of all time. I've been waiting for over a year for ya'll to watch this one.

Rayna Storie

I am fully in the mindset that the best movies are ones that you haven't heard before. Of course there are movies that we've heard of and that we love but those are standard but the best one's a special ones are ones we never knew existed

Mark Alex Leach

My exit strategy is to turn away while saying, "Oh shit, excuse me I forgot I need to do my mumble mumble..." and by that time I'm heading for the door, and they can't ask me to repeat what I said.

Daniel Popp

Another lesser known film that should be more widely known is "Layer Cake". Brilliant crime thriller starring Daniel Craig and oh so many other well known actors before they became big. Pretty sure it's the role that got Daniel Craig cast as James Bond. It's also the directorial debut of Matthew Vaughn, who directed Kick-Ass, Kingsman, X-Men First Class, and Stardust. Highly recommend you two watch Layer Cake and help give it the attention it deserves.

REDR58

Excellent reaction by you both. This was a first time watch for me too. Wonderful movie!! Notice the clouds subtly start moving behind Harrold for a few moments when he was having a convo with the wobbly wobbly HR guy. This happens at about 19:08 when Eiffel starts narrating about Ana’s brownies. The music playing in the apartment closet with the mirror is Max Richter’s “On the Nature of Daylight” which runs over the end of the ”Arrival” starting from after the alien ships depart the Earth. Linda Hunt (Edna Mode) playing the psychologist was in Dune 1984 playing “Shadout Mapes.” Dustin Hoffman’s Professor Hilbert’s several mentions of counting stairs and tiles was a reference to his character in “Rain Man” (1988) with Tom Cruise and that’s all can say without spoiling so go watch that movie! Queen Latifah had a really nice performance in this movie. Do check out “Everything Must Go” from 2010 with another good dramatic performance from Will Ferrell. Edit: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s tattoos in this movie are not real (nor are any of the tattoos Rooney Mara got for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” though her eyebrow and nipple piercings are real and done for that movie): Gyllenhaal Instagram movie tattoo: https://www.instagram.com/p/CgpKNZ_u0ro/?igsh=Z3B4bGJpNXMwMm5x And George, I have to disagree with you on “World War Z”! It’s one of my favorite zombie movies next to “Dawn of the Dead” because not everyone acts like morons when faced with the threat. And I don’t particularly care about movies being slightly or markedly different from the source material. All that matters to me is how much I enjoy the movie. Anyway, looking forward to the next reaction!

Maiki

Marc Forster also did Stay (2005), a very unique mindfuck-thriller with Ewan McGregor, a pretty young Ryan Gosling and Naomi Watts.

Jacob King

I love this movie! The “I brought you flowers” line is one of my favourite quotes. Similar movies include (all for different reasons), Ruby Sparks, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Big Fish, Colossal, Damsels in Distress, Esio Trot, Adaptation and I ❤️ Huckabees. There are others. I would really love to see a reaction to Huckabees one day. It’s not as gentle as Stranger than Fiction but if you want to see Dustin Hoffman mentor a young man in the throes of an existential crisis it’s up there.

WalrusWallace

Great reaction! I really enjoyed this movie. This was a first for me as well. Also, please consider watching The Dressmaker (2015). It's one of my favorite Australian films and Kate Winslet is wonderful in it

Jonas Buckner

I completely agree about Queen Latifah. The supporting players get overshadowed by the main cast's performance, but she's wonderful in this. Every moment she's on screen is in service of the character, and she plays it perfectly.

Darin Foat

There's another Max Richter piece on the soundtrack, when Harold is reading the manuscript on the bus. It's called Horizon Variations. Both tracks are off of his album The Blue Notebooks.

REDR58

Speaking of Kate Winslet I would recommend “The Reader” from 2008. A difficult but excellent movie.

Joshua White

I love this movie, certainly, but if you want to see the film it was ever-so-subtly ripping off, check out Adaptation. It's much darker, and a lot funnier--if you can keep up with the meta-levels of narration. :)

Mooj

So stoked to this reaction! looking forward to it, love this movie.. And for the mundanity, it's 36C where I am, Aussie summer things haha

Brien Kliver

32 F = 0 C here in Northern Illinois

beefjerkywizard

So excited to watch this with you. Easily one of my favourites....as for the weather. I was in Kananaskis this morning and it was -1 and sunny. By the time I was back in Edmonton (I know. Sorry) this afternoon and it was -14 and dreary. How being four hours away can change that much.

beefjerkywizard

When Craig was announced as Bond I was very sceptical but a friend told me to watch Later Cake and I was convinced he was the right fit for 007

Brandon Meng

So much to say. Loved this movie for a long time so I was really looking forward to the reaction and it did not disappoint. Love how much you both enjoyed it. You've almost completed the trifecta of comedic actors in their best movies where they play a role unlike what they usually play: Will Farrell in Stranger Than Fiction Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love (also more recently Uncut Gems) 2/3!

Brandon Meng

+ 1 I ❤️ Huckabees, nobody ever talks about that movie. I was thinking about it when I watched this reaction because of Dustin Hoffman's similarity in characters. Walter Mitty also great, haven't seen the rest.

Jacob King

Adaptation is pretty wild. Nicholas Cage plays identical twins who’re trying to write the movie you are supposedly watching.

Gary Fixler

I'm one of the loneriest loners in the world. I don't know, maybe Simone can relate, but I can go literally months without seeing anyone, and not even notice. I live alone, and have for decades. No one's even been in my house since before COVID. I tend to check the mail every few weeks, and it's basically all junk. I buy things in bulk so I don't have to shop often. I just love my own little world. It's chock full of things to do, learn, and make. The weird thing, though, is that in the rare times when I do go out, I'm super personable. No one bothers me. I meet anyone's level, even the person that wore out George in 20 minutes. I'm good all night. But the next day, still kind of on a high from all the excitement of the night before, I'm done. I don't need to see anyone again for a year, and would prefer not to.

Stevtrek

I feel like "The Majestic" starring Jim Carrey is similar to this one for Will Farrell. It is not very well known, but I think it is really good and one of Carrey's early serious acting efforts.

joejud1017

I've seen so many movies for the first time suggested from following your channel, some good, some bad. However a few have turned out to be some of my favorites like Superbad and Office Space. This movie is one of them. Loved it, wish I'd watched it years ago. I have a couple of suggestions where comedians play, more or less, a more serious role if you haven't seen them. Ben Stiller's Secret Life of Walter Mitty or Simon Pegg's Hector and the Search for Happiness.

Superpotroast

You may recall Mercator being a familiar sounding name..As he created the early globe maps with straight lines, which very over-exaggerated the size of Greenland and Antarctica.. Also this is probably Will Ferrel's most underrated movie..I remember we rented this from Blockbuster back in the day and my whole family loved it, so we bought a copy soon after..

Diplo's Sandwich

I love you guys! There is nothing like this movie.. but I suggest Being John Malkovich and Lars and the Real Girl.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Oh wow I just realized I had this movie confused with "Everything Must Go", which I guess is Will Ferrell's other serious movie, but speaking of meta movies, you guys gotta check out "American Splendor". Paul Giamatti as Harvey Pekar is so great.

Fraser S

this kind of reminded me of adaption (2002) directed by Spike Jonze and written by Charlie Kaufman. i recommend that if you like a movie about writing

Simone's Coconut Squire

RE: IRS Agents Yes, they absolutely go into places alone and unprotected. Yes, they have to go over all the records. That's the audit part, making sure the paperwork adds up to what the business says it adds up to. Audits can take months or even years for large companies. Most agents are REALLY strict on the gift policy (not just Harold) because that's both cause for termination and possible criminal charges.

Simone's Coconut Squire

If you're looking for something kinda meta and similar, check out Adaptation with Nicholas Cage. It's the only movie that has gotten an Academy Award nomination for a fictional character (For best adapted screenplay I believe). It's officially an adaption of the novel "The Orchid Thief", and while the story references the book, the story is actually something else entirely.

David Lonewolf Wright

It has been too long since I watched this beautiful movie. I am glad I got to experience your first time watching and delighting in it.
